“YOU'RE ALL I CAN SEEM TO THINK ABOUT.”

After a chaotic evening full of giving Gu Yiliang’s evil stepmother a piece of his mind, Wei Yanzi is beside himself. It seems that no matter what Wei Yanzi does, he and Gu Yiliang only grow closer by the second. But that only spells trouble for Wei Yanzi, who is trying to lay low and keep the few fans he does have.

Call it a delicate game of cat and mouse, but if the fandom were to find out about their new relationship dynamic, there'd be hell to pay and then some. After all, in their current political climate, it’s not like gay men are accepted all that easily, not to mention the damage it could do to their careers.

But Wei Yanzi is getting ahead of himself. First, he has to figure out how he ended up in Gu Yiliang’s room, the two men pinching each other’s cheeks…? And given the current situation, are we really all that certain Gu Yiliang is straight, anyway?

Super sweet! But if hadn’t read the novel before, I would be so confused about what’s going on.

I've been in fandoms for almost 20 years, but agreed with other reviewers, some things didn't make sense. Although I know they can be a lot more intense in China than Western countries. I also felt like not a lo happened, so hopefully won't be dragged out too much.

Listen, I am not one of these squeeing manga reading women who turns into a pile of metaphorical goo whenever one of the MCs does something thoughtful for the other one, but omg, the secret messages that Gu Yiliang sends to Wei Yanzi over social media definitely has me feeling things! 🤭🥰 He is so sweet!

Anyway, I really enjoyed this volume (especially the first half), but I guess you can't really have a rom-com without some sort of miscommunication, and I reeeally hate those. This volume ends with one, but instead of making things kinda angsty or sad, it just created this silly situation that I can't explain without giving away spoilers. It was a little funny but also kind of annoying... but only because, like I said, I hate miscommunication, even if it's small and for comedic affect.

I'll get over it, though, because it did serve to show just how caring Gu Yiliang can be. He'd be an incredible boyfriend, and while Wei Yanzi can see that, I'm waiting for him to get to the point of saying 'Yeah, I need that. Let's make this happen.' 😆

If you're not really into shipping or fandoms and at least a tiny bit familiar with idol culture, you may not get the humor in this series, but I'm having a blast so far. With the way things ended, the next volume is going to be ridiculous; I'm excited to see how everything unfolds. 4 stars

"This sort of healthy straightforwardness gives my heart this feeling of bubbles floating around, swelling and bursting... And I'm the only one who can feed it.”

description

I Ship My Rival x Me Vol. 2 continues to be an adorably hilarious read. The comedic timing and over-the-top misunderstandings make every chapter a fun ride, though I can’t help but wish the chapters were longer. Wei Yanzi’s inner monologues are so absurdly dramatic that they add an extra layer of ridiculousness to the story, making it impossible not to laugh.

One of the highlights of this manhua is the way it plays with tropes in the most exaggerated ways. The bromance-turned-competition is a prime example, and the way the two leads completely misinterpret each other’s words is comedy gold. There’s technically communication happening, but both of them are on completely different wavelengths, which just adds to the humor. The art is also a strong point—it has a polished yet expressive style that I enjoy more than some of the other manhuas I own.

On the physical side, I appreciate that the pages aren’t glossy, which makes the reading experience feel smoother. The extra art at the end is a great bonus and a nice touch for fans who enjoy collecting. While I wish the chapters were longer, this volume was still a blast to read, and I can’t wait to see how the chaos continues in the next one.

Oh Gu Yiliang, the man that you are...

I must confess -- I finished the first volume and instantly ran and read the whole novel, and I loved every single minute of it. So reading the events that transpired here were not new to me, but they were just as delightful, if not even more so, in manhua form. I said it on my review of the novel, but it's worth saying again -- this story was meant to be a manhua. The comedy, the pacing, the scenes -- they just scream manhua. And Qualia absolutely kills all of it.

But aside from just how good this manhua is, the story!!! God!!! I love idiots to lovers so much! I love it when they're both speaking the same language but also not speaking the same language!! I love how they are both Totally Absolutely Straight Men!! I love how they are both falling for each other!! I love how Gu Yiliang is accidentally the most perfect boyfriend ever, and how quickly he abandons heterosexuality for Wei Yanzi!! I love how Wei Yanzi is trying his god damn best but the fates are against him!! God!!!!

This is such a fun story, and it's shaping up to be such a fun series. I am eagerly awaiting the next volume. I cannot wait to see them slowly keep falling for each other <3

It was cute and funny at times but I feel it didn't make a lot of sense. However, I'm not a shipper or into fandoms in general so maybe I'm missing some essential knowledge to get it. On top of that the slow burn is really slooow burning. The artwork is still gorgeous though.

The cute, chaotic and awkward love story between a C-list idol Wei Yanzi and B-lister Gu Yiliang continues. Second volume picks up where the first left, Wei Yanzi blurting out that Gu Yiliang is the only thing he can think of. It’s an awkward start for the volume, but luckily Gu Yiliang takes it to mean Wei Yanzi is his fan.

But Wei Yanzi is growing more confused. All their sweet interactions are real, and Gu Yilian’s nice behaviour is real, but Niangzi, their ship, is not real. It’s just their fandoms’ imagination that he’s been swept up with. But maybe it’s enough as long as he believes in it. And what’s wrong with dreaming a little, when the other half of the ship is so perfect. And Gu Yiliang seems to be feeding it. But is he gay or not?

From Gu Yiliang’s diary we learn that he’s as clueless as before. For him, the posts he makes on social media are mementos, nothing more. He’s happy how Wei Yanzi defended him against his step-mother though, and can’t quite fathom his fuzzy feelings.

But the production company they’re making the film for have noticed too, and they want the pair to sell their bromance on a live chat with fans. It turns into a hilarious competition of which one is more manly and straight, while Gu Yilian shamelessly flirts with Wei Yanzi to sell the bromance. Wei Yanzi is even more confused than before.

Then Gu Yilian overhears Wei Yanzi’s phone conversation with someone and concludes that Wei Yanzi must have a sugar daddy. It upsets him greatly, and as a solution, he decides to take the other man’s place. But he goes about it in a circumspect way, causing Wei Yanzi to misunderstand things. He believes Gu Yilian is teaching him to act, while Gu Yilian is now wondering if are they boyfriends. And if they are, how should he behave?

This was such a wonderful volume. There are some sweet moments of almost kissing and constant touching, but the relationship mostly exists in Wei Yanzi’s and their shippers’ heads. But everything is so freaking cute it makes my heart overflow. I cannot get enough of this series.

Honestly a little bit disappointed, because I'd loved the first volume so much. This one kind of...doesn't make a lot of sense in places? I don't know if I'm just not familiar enough with Chinese drama fandoms to understand all the ins and outs of the fanservice they're signing up for.

The vast majority of this volume was covering an hour long livestream that they did to piggyback off the Weibo posts that Gu Yiliang made after that lovely day with Wei Yanzi. The content is just shippy enough to send hearts soaring, but Wei Yanzi is able to step in and make it sound like more overt promo for their show. So they roll with that.

The livestream was funny - they started off very dudebro, and I was cracking up at the manspreading and Wei Yanzi boasting that his hobby is weightlifting...then being horrified when Gu Yiliang takes him seriously and challenges him to lift him.

Of course, this leads to a super shippy moment, and then a bunch of stuff with peaches that I just didn't really understand after? Then we close out the work stuff and have a really nice meal with two of them alone, chatting and being oddly flirty.

And then Wei Yanzi takes a phone call, and Gu Yiliang suddenly gets weird and standoffish and seems to be asking Wei Yanzi whether he's...gay? Or at least that's very much how it sounded? But then it was apparently just about the fanservice, and how he's going to treat Wei Yanzi "like a boyfriend" while they're filming, which somehow led to them paying each other's manager's salaries?

???

I'm genuinely just really confused. I have no idea what's going through Gu Yiliang's head, whether he's straight and oblivious or actually interested in Wei Yanzi, or what exactly they're trying to do at this point. It's starting to feel a little bit forced, and that makes me sad, because the first volume was so, so fun and really natural feeling.

But we'll see. I like the characters, and maybe the next volume will make more sense and show more of them actually bonding and having real conversations again.

The art was lovely though, especially some of the panels of Gu Yiliang. I wonder if the novel version would make some of the context a bit more clear.

Wei continues to enjoy the ship community, but is starting to realize some potential conflicts given their roles in the ship and Gu's complete lack of knowledge of the community. It seems like their agency has picked up on some of the turning commentary and are now actively asking for fanservice, not that Gu is willing to pick up the order unless Wei is also okay with it - all without actually talking about it all. Something about Wei's phone call drastically changes Gu's perception of their relationship and his role in it, which is somewhat confusing, but also potentially pretty solid groundwork for more if they continue to get along the way that they have and get closer. It'll be interesting to see how things progress given their work together and this strange blooming relationship.

Wei Yanzi constantly questioning Gu Yiliang’s sexuality is hilarious 😂😂😂 he’s always like Gu Yiliang so are u gay or not?? Sorry Yanyan, I don’t know either…but anyways other than that I kinda found this volume confusing in a way and I know some kinda misunderstanding is definitely happening between WYZ and GYL but I don’t know what it actually is…or maybe it’ll be revealed in the next volume who knows? I still found this volume a very enjoyable read tho, Niangzi is such a funny ship to support 😂

I liked volume one better but I think it was just that stupid headband that was throwing me off. Also the fan service is going crazy. I love how Yanyan is trying to be like "are we gay?" like broski YES!!!Also Gu just being confused about how he is supposed to act and being jealous like what is going on guys?? I'm so excited to read the next volume because they are actually starting to date at this point.

These two are so cute but this definitely felt like a middle book. Their interactions are adorable but I can't wait for them to be on the same page. Guess you can't have a romcom without the misunderstanding trope. 😘

This volume feels a little like it's on the weaker side for me after the first was such a strong start. Overall it wasn't bad, though. The stakes feel pretty low and the progress minimal, but hopefully the next volume might have more meat to it!

We are so back! I thought PEPA did a great job of showing Gu Yiliang's mindset change throughout this book as he starts to accept his feelings and identity, despite Wei Yanzi being blissfully unaware to that fact. The art continues to be fantastic; I particularly loved Yanyan turning into The Scream and other famous paintings. Cannot wait for the next volume, it really feels like we're coming to a turning point!
