Michael Parkin is an illustrator based in the outskirts of London. He loves finding humor and fun in the everyday, which has led to him working with a variety of clients, including the Science Museum and the BBC.
First sentence: One morning, a very important delivery arrived at the farm. The animals all gathered together, wondering what could possibly be in the crate!
Premise/plot: The farm has a new rooster. The problem? (As you should know by now, all books have a 'problem.') This rooster can't tell time....literally. This rooster has clocks--many of them. But he can't read time, or, tell time. Therefore, he crows at all the wrong times.
My thoughts: I expected the book to be funnier. For better or worse, it turned into a concept book about telling time. I suppose that could be a great thing for some. Does it make for the most entertaining farm story? Probably not. Would it still be a natural choice for reading aloud? I think so.
I recieved an ARC of this book for my honest opinion.
This is such a cute book! Rooster doesn’t know how to tell time so he keeps waking up the farm (and farmer) at the wrong times and so the farm animals help Rooster learn to tell time. It’s such a cute, fun, accessible way to start kids learning how to read an analog clock and another example of how it is ok to not know something and ask for help. A great book for classrooms and those parents who want their kids to know this basic life skill before the 2nd grade.
This is delightfully silly. Children will love seeing the various farm animals. It helps introduce the concept of an analog clock and how to tell time on it. The words are well-placed on the page and the illustrations are colorful.
Not a five star for me because, as a person who lives in a rural area, I know roosters crow at all kinds of hours. 😝 But still a cute picture book for families!
Edit: okay, I’ve had time to think about this and it’s even cuter if kids who live around roosters hear them at all hours and think they ALSO have a wrong-time rooster…what a cute conversation starter for families.
