When Jesus said, "Follow me" (Jn. 21:19), it was an invitation to live as His teachings directed, to believe as He believed. Many traditionally accepted Christian doctrines may or may not reflect the religion of Jesus. Some reflect questionable economic, political, social and even superstitious influences. Alternatives examines the thinking behind traditional Christian beliefs, offers some nontraditional perspectives, and allows you to decide what is valid for yourself. Teachings considered are God, Jesus Christ, heaven, hell, satan, sin, worship, communion, prayer, baptism and life after death.
Alternatives may provide answers to questions that have puzzled you for years. It may strengthen some long-held beliefs and shed new light on others. Alternatives will surely expand your thinking and enhance your spiritual growth.
Not exactly what I was expecting from the title, but definitely still interesting, for people looking to reconcile traditional Christian beliefs with a more "new-age" approach to faith. Probably more helpful for the contemplation that it might stir in the reader than for what the book actually has to say, but this might be due to its age and might depend on the reader individually. For me, it was practically a restatement of the ideas I have been taught since I was a child, but again, that's just one individual take, and I'm a very specific case within the Unity...faith, I guess. I can't even come up with a term, lol. I can't even really explain why I read this book, but both as someone with an entirely undefined relationship to religion and a fascination with it, I definitely got some interesting thinking out of the read.
This an easy read that looks at Christianity from a perspective that gives the reader permission to accept Christian Teachings but not with hard line dogma and judgement often experienced in many Christian Churches.
A really nice, inspiring quick read. It's gentle and d very rah rah about how to view the world/ religion/ spirituality/ and the self so that you're able to live in peace and energizing harmony with the self.
