Women in Saudi Arabia are often described as either victims of patriarchal religion and society or successful survivors of discrimination imposed on them by others. Madawi Al-Rasheed's new book goes beyond these conventional tropes to probe the historical, political and religious forces that have, across the years, delayed and thwarted their emancipation. The book demonstrates how, under the patronage of the state and its religious nationalism, women have become hostage to contradictory political projects that on the one hand demand female piety, and on the other hand encourage modernity. Drawing on state documents, media sources and interviews with women from across Saudi society, the book examines the intersection between gender, religion and politics to explain these contradictions and to show that, despite these restraints, vibrant debates on the question of women are opening up as the struggle for recognition and equality finally gets under way.

الكتاب يستعرض بدايةً العلاقة بين الإحياء الديني وتشكيل الدولة السعودية الأولى في القرن الثامن عشر، إلى الوضع السياسي والديني في عصرنا الحالي

منذ بداية الدعوة عندما اهتاج السكان العرب على الرجم العام الذي تم بحق النساء، ربما كانت ممارسة الزنا واسعة الانتشار بحيث خشي الكثيرون نساء ورجال من العقاب. وهكذا طرد الداعية الوهابي من بيته وأصبح مشردا ومنبوذا.. ولا بد أنه أدرك بعد طرده أنه لن يستطيع الاستمرار بقيادة الأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر بدون سلطة سياسية لحمايته !
وكان حجر الأساس في بناء الدولة الوهابية قد وُضع بفضل جهود نساء قدّرت تبشيره ووعظه واقتربن من أزواجهن بهدف الترحيب والاحتفاء بالشيخ، قد تكون نساء مدينة الدرعية مسرورات بأخبار عقاب الزنا، وربما كن أكثر سعادة لرؤية الحد يقام على هؤلاء النسوة اللواتي قدن أزواجهن إلى الضلال وحرموهم من السلام في الزواج وأفسدن النسب الصافي..

ولأجل بسط النظام الأبوي العام. من ١٩٣٢ وصاعدا، عمل العلماء والهيئة مع بعضهم البعض وأصبح الدين والسلطة لا ينفصلان مما يعني تحويل الإرث التاريخي الوهابي إلى مشروع دولة. فأصبحت سيطرة الرجال على النساء في هذه العملية سياسة وطنية وحكومية !

وبخصوص تعليم الفتيات كان يتعين على الدولة بعد الرفض القاطع من الشعب للقرار أن تسمح به تحت شعار "الالتزام بالاسلام والتقاليد" فأعلنت الدولة بوضوح أن (الهدف من تعليم الفتيات هو تنشئتهن بطريقة اسلامية صحيحة وذلك لأداء واجبها في الحياة، وتكون ربة منزل ناجحة ومثالية وأماً صالحة، وعلى استعداد للقيام بأعمال مناسبة لطبيعتها مثل التعليم والتمريض والعلاج الطبي) وظل إعداد الفتيات للأعمال المناسبة "لطبيعتهن" ! كأمهات وزوجات هدفا منشودا كامنا في المناهج الدراسية..

خصصت فصل للحديث عن روائيات شهيرات وإعلاميات وكاتبات أحدثن ضجة بالمجتمع، كانت أبرزهن بدرية البشر وسمر المقرن ونادين البدير في عز الصحوة

هولاء النساء اللواتي وضعن تحت رعاية الدولة لتقديم صورة مشرقة عن البلد وليمثلن قدوة لغيرهن من النساء
يدركن الآن أنه يتم التعامل معهن على انهن رموز في جدول الاعمال الإصلاحي للدولة

تحدثت أيضاً عن النساء الراديكاليات اللواتي لا يتمتعن فقط باضطهادهن! وإنما يطالبن بتوسيع نطاق السيطرة والمراقبة إلى مساحات خارج متناول رجال الحسبة!
وكان الحديث بشكل موسع عن تاريخ رقية المحارب ونورة السعد في الكتابة والشهرة والطرد من الصحف بسبب الوعظ السلفي التقليدي السطحي

يتتبع الكتاب ويحلل لعبة الضحك على الذقون ، والمظهر الحربائي في تبديل الجلد تبعاً للضغوط الممارسة .
والحالة الإنفصامية الممنهجة عبر دمج القومية الدينية مع صبغة حداثية والتعكّز على قضايا النساء
إنها حكاية سياق تاريخي-سياسي قبل أن يكون حكاية حقوقية وجنسانية .

من خلال تحليلات شيقة وجديدة تقدم "الرشيد" هذا البحث حول "قضية المرأة" وأوضاعها في المملكة العربية السعودية. وهي القضية التي شغلت الرأي العام المحلي والعالمي منذ الأزل وبشكل كبير خصيصاً عقب أحداث الحادي عشر من ستمبر. حيث أصبحت هذة القضية من أهم القضايا التي يتم تبنيها من قبل الحكومات الدولية للضغط على الرأي السياسي المحلي بعد حادثة تفجير برجي التجارة وإلتفات الرأي العالمي للمنهجية التي تتعامل بها المملكة مع قضايا المرأة في أوساطها ومدى إرتباطها بالتفسيرات الدينية المتشددة.

رغم أن النقاط التي دار حولها معظم النقاش في الكتاب هي نقاط مفروغ منها خصوصاً لأبناء وبنات هذة البيئة إلا أن "الرشيد" تعيد تسليط الضوء عليها من جوانب جديدة، وتأتي بأمثلة جديدة للإستشهاد بها، وتستعرض أشكال الآراء والتوجهات النسائية داخل النطاق المحلي من خلال مناقشة شخصيات نسائية شهيرة في الأوساط المحلية والعالمية، كأديبات أوعالمات شريعة أوناشطات في قضايا المرأة السعودية وغيرها، وتخرج بإستنتاجات قد تتفق معها فيها كقارئ أو تختلف.

الكتاب مهم من ناحية أنه يناقش القضية من جميع زواياها ويدخل في منافذ جديدة من تفاصيلها، فمن سبق له القراءة عن وضع المرأة في الوسط السعودي بشكل مكثف أو الوضع الإجتماعي فيها ككل سيجد نفسه أيضاً يكتشف مواضع جديدة وشخصيات نسائية لم يسبق له أن أتى على سيرتها أحد فيما قرأه في السابق عن الأوضاع في المملكة على مختلف أشكالها. السرد في الكتاب طويل إلا أن الدخول في أغواره لا يأخذ منك كل ذلك الوقت والجهد فقد أنهيته بوقت قياسي بالنظر إلى حجمه وثقل موضوعه وقد يعود ذلك لسلاسة "الرشيد" في مناقشة أفكارها وترتيبها بشكل سهل وبسيط على القارئ الغير متخصص.

أعتقد بأنه من الكتب التي يجب أن ينظر فيها كل من هو مهتم بالأوضاع الداخلية للمرأة في بيئة المملكة العربية السعودية، ومدى تأثير عوامل عديدة كالدين والسياسة وطبيعة الجنس على وضعها الإجتماعي والإنساني، وكيف يتم النظر إليها من منظور تلك العوامل. على عكس النظريات التي تُحمل مساوئ "وضع المرأة" في السعودية على عاتق الدين والمجتمع تلقي "الرشيد" المسؤولية بالكامل على عاتق الدولة، وترى أن الدولة هي القادرة على إدارة الأمور من معقلها حتى وأن كان هناك تنديد على التغير من قبل الدين وأفراد المجتمع المتحفظين.

ترى "الرشيد" أن الإقصاء للعنصر النسائي داخل السعودية هو نتيجة للطفرة النفطية التي جعلت الإعتماد الكامل عليها في إقتصاد الدولة قادر على دعم مسألة الإقصاء الشبة كلي لدورها في الحراك الإقتصادي والسياسي إلى جانب تبني الدولة للرأي الديني فيها كأديولوجية قومية، كما تُبرز فكرة أن الأصوات النسائية في المملكة مهما كان توجهها فأنها دائماً تستغيث بالدولة لمناصرتها وإنتزاع حقوقها الشرعية أوالمتنازع عليها من قبل الجنس الآخر "الرجل" لتحفظ نفسها من تبعات الإفصاح عن أراء إصلاحية في سلوكيات الدولة وشؤونها كالسجن أو الإيقاف وما شابه ذلك.

في خاتمة الكتاب تتنبئ "الرشيد" بأن الحال على ما هو عليه لا يمكن له أن يدوم مع التغيرات التي عاشتها الأوساط العربية عقب أحداث الربيع العربي في 2011م، وأن الأزمات الإقتصادية التي أثرت على إقتصاد البلد ستكون دافعاً للدولة لتبني فكرة دعم الصوت النسائي فيها، والبدء بمناصرة قضايا المرأة وإحداث تغيير فعلي في وضعها على أرض الواقع، وهي النبوءة التي بدأت تتحقق على أرض الواقع مع التغييرات العديدة التي حصلت على وضع المرأة في المملكة في السنوات الأخيرة منذ تسلم القيادة الجديدة للحكم في السعودية، وقد يكون أبرزها هو وضع المرأة خلف مقود السيارة في 24 يونيو من هذا العام، قراءة شيقة ومثيرة للحواس.

An essential reading on Saudi women. Al-Rasheed explains how the exclusion and manipulation of Saudi Women is meant to empower the state and make its dominance visible and fatal. On another side, the 'woman question' is used to silence and marginalize political opposition. The first two chapters offer an astonishing feminist reading of the forged alliance between Wahabism and the Saudi state. She concludes that in post 9/11, and with the Arab Spring, Saudi Arabia is trying to 'feminise' itself to oppress political calls for change and presents itself a champion of women rights against its own jihadi males; feared by the west.

Fascinating book dealing with patriarchy in the Saudi context. Very much appreciated her attention to different avenues women take to challenging patriarchy and her attempts to show that it is Saudi's status as a religious nationalist state that has led to a particularly bad situation for women there. I wish she had focused more on explaining why women are often the vessels through which patriarchy is passed down (eg the Islamist women she discusses) and I also wish she had focused more on class as a division rather than Islamist vs liberal. Although she says she does not like the division, she goes on to structure the book according to it. Overall a very comprehensive book.

A thorough analysis of the 'women's question' in Saudi Arabia that debunks the stereotypical binary classification of Saudi women. A great read for anyone interested in the complexity of the feminine concept in the Arab world in general and Saudi Arabia in particular. Highly recommened.

كتاب مهم لأي شخص سعودي، خاصةً في ظل الاجواء السياسية الحالية، الكتاب يحكي أحداث عايشناها وأحداث سابقة لها يأطرها ويجعلها متسلسلة ويحاول ان تفسر كل ما يحدث الان ولماذا يحدث، يجاوب الى حد ما سؤال كيف وصلنا ٢٠١٨ ووضع المرأة السعودية ما زال بهذا الحال ؟ .

سرد واقعي تحليلي تاريخي لواقع المرأة السعودية، قد تنقصة وجهات نظر اكثر وهناك تفاصيل تم غض النظر عنها، والترجمة العربية ليست الأفضل.

لكن الترجمة سيئة جدا جدا جدا، سقيمة ومقرفة، لا تخلو جملة واحدة من أخطاء لغوية تركيبية وطباعية،

So this book starts out taking you through the foundation of the Saudi state in the early 20th century and the establishment of its very unique ideological regime and how that manifested in the exclusion of women in public space to levels unseen before. State policies directly impacted social practice; for instance in the 1970s polygamy was a dying practice in the KSA (similar to pretty much every other country in the region,) but then the state endorsing it led to an increase in its prevalence.

It was around the 1970s that the book speaks about the rise of women's education and resulting women's literature of the 1980s and 1990s while women are still kept out of the workforce and public space.*** Then after 9/11 when the state was under international scrutiny for its ties to terrorism and its treatment of women the regime reacted by patronizing educated/elite women and portraying itself as a reformer and protector of women from misogynists. Women were invited on media to debate what rights they should have, advocates largely being categorized as either liberal feminists who use the UN and international law as a framework for their argument, or women that use Islam as the basis for their rights (who often don't identify as feminist) and calling for the state to protect them from issues varying from harassment to pornography. Both groups of women as well as liberals in general call for such changes but do not identify the state as the agent that was blocking women's rights, and often paint the Monarch as their protector from their opponents in these forums and those who they purport to represent. It's also pointed out that such forums are meant to substitute for any actual emancipation of women, or any democratization period. This is contrasted in the conclusion with the Arab uprisings of 2011 in which various protests in the KSA including some women's protests did directly challenge and blame the regime for their state, though some demonstrations were also merely reformist.

The book was very thorough, slightly too much for my taste I think it could have been more concise (most studies I've read on similar subjects are about 100 pages shorter.) At the same time I get that will make this a great resource for people doing their own research but as a casual reader I didn't really need to read every single example to get the point. But overall definitely excellent.

***Also a nitpick: Al-Rasheed says at one point that oil-rich states generally have weak women's participation in the workforce which isn't universally true. In Iraq during the 1970s oil boom, for instance, the state decided to encourage women to enter the workforce, both rhetorically and materially by providing free daycare, instead of importing foreign workers.

While to many the ‘women question’ in Saudi Arabia is self evident in the sense that religion (i.e. Islam) oppresses women and hence women are oppressed, this book moves beyond this simplistic understanding by looking at the diverse range of factors that have and continue to marginalize women in Saudi Arabia. Al-Rasheed explores the nature of the Saudi state by taking into account the interplay of religion and politics in Saudi by situating it in a historical context. In doing so, she accounts for the way in which the ‘religious nationalism’ of Saudi state in the past used women as means to symbolize the ‘piety’ of the state. The women as a symbol however changed with the aftermath of the September 11th attacks as the Saudi state since then has aimed to seem as a modernizing force and a champion of women’s rights, in particular to the West.

Al-Rasheed is able to account for how the Saudi royal family is in fact not the modernizing force it assumes itself to be but rather that the interplay of religious nationalism has ensured that women are stuck between being the symbol of the state’s ‘piety’ and as rational agents of equal worth to the male counterparts.

Al-Rasheed is able to do all this in her book as well as account for what she refers to as a 'feminist consciousness' that is slowly but surely emerging in Saudi Arabia.

يتناول الكتاب ذاك التفاعل الذي نشأ بين الدولة والقومية الدينية والأشكال الثقافية والاجتماعية للنظام الأبوي ، ودوره في تشكيل وضعية المرأة السعودية .
أطروحة أكاديمية نسوية متبصرة ومثيرة للاهتمام .

while AlRasheed offers a somewhat comprehensive investigation of Saudi women’s role, contribution, and resistance in and to the Saudi political machine, she fails to offer anything new. The main thesis of the book that historically, socially and politically specific constructions of gender are tied closely to national agendas and in general nationalism is on one hand, a very interesting perspective yet the author presents it as though it were her own, despite the fact that it’s been discussed previously by Yuval-Davis (90s) & Joan Nagel ( in the 80s) yet not once does she mention them.
She is right in that the contemporary status of Saudi women is the result of very specific yet contingent historical, social & political developments and not the result of prevailing islamic beliefs, traditions or tribalism.

But I am afraid I am quite picky because I do disagree with her on a very particular detail…that shopping malls only offer Saudi women an arena to seduce men who exist in those spaces for the sole purpose of imposing their own masculinities. This not only paints Saudi women as seductresses whose private escapades also seem to revolve only around men, but it also neglects the fact that Saudi women have used & continue to use shopping malls to exercise freedoms that are otherwise difficult to engage in at home. Although this is changing since the public sphere has radically changed with the ascension of MbS to power and subsequent easing of restrictions, Amelie Le Renard offers a riveting investigation of how Saudi women interact(ed) in different public spheres in her book “A society of young women”.

A very accomplished academic book and analysis of gender relations in Saudi Arabia, right up until 2013, when it was published.

Across a series of chapters, Al-Rasheed discusses and analyses changing relationships between gender, religion, and the state. The earlier chapters deal more with history and religious nationalism. The later chapters deal more with modernity and the confrontations between more liberal and conservative forces in recent decades.

There is some interesting analysis of Saudi women novelists and activists. The book helped me gain insight into the country's distinctive and complex history, economy, politics, and culture. Al-Rasheed traces the contradictory forces and key events carefully, acknowledging the nuances and diversity of influences and identities within the country. Comparatively, there is also analysis across neighbouring Gulf countries and views framed in relation to western culture.

The book ends around 2012-2013, with an awareness from the author that there is a lot of ongoing change. I had to wonder what a 2024 book on the same subject would tell me about the 2014-2024 period.

"عندما بدأت الدولة تتعرض لخطابات جديدة حول حقوق المرأة، اعتمد العلماء موقفاً دفاعياً لإبراز أن الإسلام رفع مكانة المرأة عالياً وكرمها وأحسن أحوالها، لذا كان لزاماً على الرجال أن يقدموا دعمهم المادي والمعنوي المتمثل بالنفقة والحماية والاحترام، لكن ما غاب عن هؤلاء العلماء هو أن المجتمع بحاجة لإسهامات النساء طمعاً بدفع عجلة التنمية الاقتصادية والاجتماعية والثقافية من ناحية وإحلال التوازن المأمول ما بين القوى المجتمعية المحلية، وإلى يومنا هذا ما زال وضع النساء يحدد الطابع الديني والأخلاقي للأمة لكنهن لا يستطعن قيادتها، يعكس الوصف التفصيلي لنقاط ضعف النساء التي تتخلل هذه الآراء الدينية قلقاً حول قوة الأمة، ويُنظر إليها على أنها كيان ذكوري بقيادة الرجال، حيث أن ذكورية الأمة تحتاج إلى التأييد من خلال الاعتماد على مصادر قرآنية والأحاديث النبوية، وبالتالي ترسيخ مصير البلاد في التقاليد المقدسة"

Is Saudi Arabia as oppressive and stifling towards women as it's portrayed in the media? Why yes, yes it is, at least according to Al-Rasheed. This was a super depressing read and somehow still lacking in Saudi women's voices, despite being about them. Al-Rasheed's explanation of the historical roots of the oppression, which she claims was based in the state's need for a unifying identity to form a nation state, was interesting for its novelty. But since post colonial states usually employed anti-colonial nationalism to control women as well, the difference is merely one in means, with the same ultimate end for the women in both regions. But you know, at least Lebanese women can drive, so that's one point for anti-colonialism v. religious nationalism.

كثيراً ما يُنظر للمرأة السعودية على أن تهميشها وإقصاءها من الحياة العامة هو نتيجة للدين الإسلامي والتقاليد والأعراف الاجتماعية، ولكن المؤلفة تؤكد في الكتاب أن السياسة والضغوط الخارجية هي التي دفعت الدولة إلى تبني "القومية الدينية" -كما يحلو للمؤلفة أن تسميه- ثم جاءت أحداث الحادي عشر من سبتمبر عام ٢٠٠١ لتكون نقطة تحول هامة

لدي ملاحظتان على الكتاب
أولاً: المؤلفة عربية سعودية وتتحدث عن بلد عربي فما الذي يدفعها لتأليف كتاب لهذا الشأن باللغة الإنجليزية؟!
كما أن النسخة الإنجليزية غير متوفرة وسعر التوصيل من مواقع شراء الكتب الأجنبية تكاد تقارب سعر الكتاب نفسه!
ثانياً: وهو أمر متعلق بالملاحظة الأولى، حيث أن الترجمة ركيكة وتحوي الكثير من الأخطاء اللغوية -النحوية منها والبنائية والإملائية- فكتاب بهذه الأهمية يجب أن تحظى ترجمته باهتمام كبير يتناسب وأهمية موضوع الكتاب

كتاب مهم وقيم جداً، يشرح وضع المرأة في السعودية -قبل ٢٠١٦-. تبحث الكاتبة في العلاقة بين الدين والدولة فيما يتعلق بحقوق المرأة، ومن المسؤول عن عدم امتلاكها لحقوقها. وبرغم الخصوصية الموجودة في الكتاب للمرأة السعودية، ألا أنه يمكن الاستفادة منه للبحث عن تفسير لغياب الحقوق الكاملة للمرأة في الدول الخليجية المجاورة.
يعيب الكتاب أن الكاتبة تبدو متحيزة ضد المملكة العربية السعودية في أحيان كثيرة، والترجمة سيئة جداً وتجعل القارئ يضيع في المعنى.

This was a very thoughtful academic analysis and exploration into the role of women in Saudi Arabia. I especially liked that the author gave voice to so many different women, showing that there is no "one" true Saudi woman, as opposed to what the Western media and the Saudi state sometimes put forth. She truly managed to get behind all the narratives and give women and girls their own agency.

تحلل الرشيد العوامل التاريخية السياسية والاقتصادية التي جعلت النظام الأبوي ( العام/الخاص) جزء من هوية الدولة ومؤسساتها.
فمثلاً عند تحليل تأثير النفط على حياة السعوديات فهو فصلهن من اليد العاملة (التي شاركت فيه عبر التاريخ)، وجعله -مع تطور التكنولوجيا- المجال العام قائم على الفصل الجنسي.

Brilliant brilliant analysis of the situation of women in Saudi Arabia through the framework of religious nationalism as a distinguishing variable to explain why women in Saudi Arabia, compared to other Muslim states, are so excluded and marginalised. Recommend for those who are interested in gender studies! The idea of the appropriation of woman by the state as a symbol is a particularly interesting idea that has been explored before in secular nationalism, but is interesting how it applies within religious nationalism: the woman is still used as an icon and becomes a 'boundary marker' to demonstrate the piety of the nation.
