Under the Oak Tree: Season 2: 5

Rate this book
Stuttering Maximilian Croyso spent a lifetime suffering the abuse of her cruel father, Duke Croyso. The Duke’s final act of cruelty? Marrying Maxi off to the war hero Riftan, legendary slayer of dragons. Now these two complete strangers have to try to make the arranged marriage that neither wanted work out.

At first, the brooding Riftan and shy, nervous Maxi have nothing in common. But their dark pasts make them more similar than either could have anticipated and soon the two outcasts find acceptance in one another for the first time

Even deeply in love, Maxi realizes that she needs more in her life to be fulfilled. Riftan risks his life on dangerous adventures protecting the Seven Kingdoms while Maxi is left behind. Desperate to prove her worth, Maxi learns healing magic from the impertinent mage Ruth. But when Riftan discovers that magic is putting her at risk, he is against it. She doesn’t need to help him–her only responsibility as a lady is staying safely at home.

What Riftan doesn’t expect is Maxi’s refusal to bow to her expected role, and instead determine her own fate. Maxi wants to use her growing skills as a sorceress to fight by his side, to protect Riftan as much as he protects her. Despite Riftan's opposition, Maxi heads off to the Mage Tower to expand her skills and save his reputation....

Wonderful story, but the ending was rushed.

I’ve been reading this story for a while, from before there was an official English translation. I’m happy to see it did get translated and it was done extremely well throughout the whole series. I love the world building, not a single time was I pulled out from an out of context object or modern phrase. There were multiple scenes where my heart was in my throat or torn to shreds. I’ve reread part of this series previously. I think the battle scenes are well done and easy to follow.

The ending was not what I was hoping for, the transition from the victory celebration to the tournament was rushed and felt spur of the moment. I loved Riftan’s geas and that he finally got to pledge it to Maxi after all this time in front of the 7 Kingdoms Council too! I wish that scene had more to it. The lead up was perfect, after Maxi accepted the oath was a bit bland. Then the jump from the tournament to the epilogue was like a 6-8 month jump and they r back in Anatol, right after the Geas was sworn. It felt rushed and I’d rather have had a travel chapter and some sweet nothings in between. Riftan and Maxi deserve sweet nothings! The Epilogue itself was good and the parallel between an earlier Riftan pov chapter and the last scene was so endearing. I wish they had done a little more of a tell all moment for Riftan there, as it would have been excellent pairing the past with the present and show both of their growth.

Riftan POV scene
HOW DARE THE LEAVE US WITH THAT SCENE!?! My poor babies! The agony! Why do you want us to feel the pain again?! It was a phenomenal scene, but whyyyyyy?!

It was a long ride, but ultimately worth it - Maxi and Riftan grew and changed, and Riftan's battle against Richard Breston truly was the culmination of his character arc. (And a very nice nod to "The Pain" per Westley in The Princess Bride.) And, of course, by the final page, these two lovable, communication-challenged idiots finally learned to actually talk to each other.

It’s finally here!!!

I’ve read the last book on Manta because the amazon release took quite long… but omg, it’s here now!!!

Nobody could have prepared me for the emptiness I felt after reading this final book. I miss them already. 🥹

Phew, it is done! Eleven books, too many redundant adverbs and tedious internal monologues to count, and a predictable ending later, I am done with Under the Oak Tree. I do like this schlocky mess of a romantasy cycle, but, boy, do I have grievances. Here they are, in no particular order:

1) Maxi doesn’t grow as much as she thinks she does. She’s still a child, worried about public opinion (especially the public's perception of her as meek, humble, and chaste), Riftan’s safety ("he slayed the dragon twice but he might get huuuuurt"), her worth as a person (making progress!), and she remains cloyingly, selfishly, selfless. I admired her ascension to magehood, but she still isn’t an adult. The fact that she’s hung up on her freckles and overall appearance in the last chapter is such a letdown, as is her remark that Riftan has become too relaxed in her presence. Their high-anxiety turmoil is unsustainable; her complaint that he now treats her like an older sibling is gross. She has no idea how to "do" marriage.

2) Riftan is an abusive psycho, no matter that he becomes more “gentle” in books 2(4) and 2(5). The narrative strength and lasting impression of the cycle derives from the torment of his coldness towards Maxi from book 1(5) through 2(3). Almost FOUR full books of unrelenting punishment through indifference! Humiliation porn at its finest: the greater the pain of rejection, the more delicious the pleasure upon renewed recognition. It's the central dynamic of romance, and it's messed up.

3) Riftan never tells Maxi that his first encounter with her when they were children is his anchoring memory. Coward.

4) They never tell each other they love each other. To a western reader, that seems strange. Overall, they learn how to communicate better, but neither of them seems mature--or even assured in their safe attachment to the other--when the story ends.

5) The political world-building, battle dynamics, and dynastic intrigue are pretty well done. Sometimes it felt like Kim narrated a tabletop or video game (“critical damage” and “hit points” are strange terms to use in a novel cycle), but I enjoyed the campaign books.

6) People were disappointed that Maxi isn’t pregnant by the end of book 2(5). She’s dizzy when dancing before the final scene, though, and, as we know from book 1(5), dizziness means that Maxi is pregnant. So, calm down—y'all have your Maxi-as-mommy fantasy.

7) Riftan learns to control his hydraulic sexuality eventually (or mostly), but his “I can’t help myself when I’m around you” shtick is one of the most grating tropes of this thing. He's a monster, and the fact that he misconstrues Maxi's shows of affection as sexually intentional flirting for long parts of the story raises a whole forest of red flags.

8) Maxi’s “newfound clarity” of voice towards the end of book 2(5) when Riftan swears his oath strikes me as ableist. She does not need to be "healed" from her stutter.

9) I wish the many side characters readers have grown to love--Uly, Ricardo, Hebaron, Elliot, Ruth--had been fleshed out better. None of them have an arc. They all live like monks. They don't have homes, children, political ambitions. They exist to serve Riftan. Maybe apart from Uly and Garrow (who just grow into their knighthoods) nobody changes. They're mere set pieces helping to stage Maxi and Riftan's turbulences.

10) The ending is super rushed. After so many near-identical and often gratuitous scenes in which Riftan acts like an asshole, we need some counter-balancing with sweetness and maturity. Alas, those things are too boring to spend time on, aren't they?

11) Language-level gripes. Please, everyone, erase the words and phrases "immediately," "entirely," "whole," "make one's way," "soon," "everything [person] had [verb-ed]," and, especially for Kim, "reunite" from your vocabulary. Less is more.

12) No more giant angry rage monster/tiny traumatized bird girl romance anymore, I beg you. Can we just have people who are the same age and height?

Do you mind holding my heart while I write this review?

I’m sad that this series is done. I feel like what we got was the quick and easy conclusion but it’s not what the story needed. It needed more passion like the other parts, It needed more drama, It just needed more. More time with characters. More time with the plot. Yes having all the stings tied up is good but at what cost. 319 pages isn’t enough to greave the lifetime I’ve spent in these pages. I wish I could go back and forget this story just so I can rediscover it again and again and again. It pains me that will never happen and I’ll have to live with this story forever, in its complete and incomplete glory.

Nevertheless…

Thank you, Suji Kim for coming back from hiatus and completing the story. Both you and your masterpiece will remain in my heart till the end of time.

I shall love thee
Until my dying breath

I’ll take my heart back now.

It's finally over 😭 while I am sad for the end, I am happy I got to experience the ride. I would have liked to seen more Maxi/Riftan interactions. The ending did seem rushed with some things glossed over. I am still content with the overall ending. We see Riftan's acknowledgment of Maxi, their very public affirmation of their love and dedication. I know the odds of us seeing more Maxi and Riftan content is super low, but I still hope the author will change her mind. But I am super grateful for the content she has given us over the years. Very sad that is the last one.

Thought it has taken TWO YEARS for this entire book series to be completely translated to English which has extended my ideal book reading time frame substantially, I’m extremely happy that I’ve finally finished this book.

I had heard some bad things about the ending of the series but I personally think it lines it up well for another book (Suji Kim I will happily pay an extraordinary amount of money for any future books please 🙏🏻). I also just felt like the final instalment brought a lot of light hearted fun and joy that we needed to see Maxi and Riftans character arcs reach a peak.

Now for the storyline - this whole series has a great storyline. From the history between them, to the challenges both characters face, to the twist at the end of book 1 and the context change for Riftan ie Maxis family (I’m trying to review with no spoilers). Book 2 was great as well although I was so convinced they had finished their war journey only to find out I was 50% through and still had more to go.

I loved the addition of Riftans pov as a side story - and built into the second book too. It gave much needed context and rounded out the story especially from the Ethelene situation.

Maxis character arc is one of the best I’ve seen. Something I can personally relate to as I’m sure many others can too. I felt like this was pretty strong in the first book and then more consistent in the second - but I loved that in the second book, you see riftan a bit more on board with supporting his wife throughout the book.

Honestly this book has been great to keep me entertained throughout - there’s a reason I happily sat and waited for the book to finally be finished being translated and it was well worth it. I’ll probably read it again in a month or so from start to finish to get to reabsorb the storyline.

The greatest series I've ever read

I absolutely love this story. It's been such a rollcoaster of emotions for me. Riftan and Maxi are so amazing. I love them so much.
Both of them changed a lot for the better. Riftan taking care of maxi and accepting her help through all his hardships though it was a rising challenge lol all riftan wanted was to protect and give her the world but maxi wants to be there for him and fight alongside him and protect him, thats the only thing she'd ever want so she changed, she grew more stronger and intelligent not caring what sacrifices she made, all to be by his side.
The character development in this series is so strong. Most likely will read again. God I hope the story continues! I would love to see a baby in the future for the two .

Full spoilers:

I felt like the story peaked at 2-3. There's no other momentum to bring forth their tension. The plot has served its function so the author had to rapidly wrap up. You could write 2 wars so well with the expeditions, but the worst one of it all happened in the blink of an eye. Events fly page and ended at the next page... theres not enough sweet moments for savour after working so hard to bear these fruits. The ending was not even as wistful or full circle as the author hopes. I respect the choices but because of that I must be honest and say this feels very underwhelming. I've been following the publishing for a year and this is what I get. Have to say I'm disappointed. I didn't get the catharsis that I'm looking forward. Perhaps it's better if you read the whole completion at one go. But the war plot is such a drag and the lore deserved to be more fleshed out if that's the case. So much about magic, dragons, and creatures just a decoration to their story.

At least give me something spicy like the cave lol 😆

What a crazy ride this series has been. I loved it so much and I am so sad it’s over. Watching the characters grow and evolve was the part that drew me in but it was all the drama and action that made me stay through 11 books!

I wish there would have been a better farewell between Sir Kauhel and Maxi. It’s felt like he was a staunch supporter of her and put his faith in her completely which helped Maxi bolster her courage. I would love to see his POV and I hope Suji Kim will give one to us. It’s a shame that the illegal translations are stopping her from writing it. I’m sure we would also love another Riftan POV too (I need to know what happened during the dragon campaign!!). What can we do as a fan base to help her I wonder, because honestly I would do almost anything to make those side stories happen.

This was wonderful work by Suji Kim and I know this will forever be a favourite of mine.

For such a great series.....the ending fell pretty flat and frankly, dare I say, boring. Love the overall story but very dragged out ending without many important moments between Max and Riftan. 3.5 stars at best.

-this didn't end up answering my questions (how is riftan just inherently good at sword fighting (/everything lol) and monster slaying, why doesn't he sleep, how can he go weeks without eating food?, how does he absorb magic? When Ruth checked to see if he was fully human I thought we were gonna get answers, but nay nay he's just a perfect physical specimen? why'd Ruth leave the mage tower? how is Ruth just so efficient at all types of magic when then shouldn't even be possible even with his slight elven ancestry? I really thought there was gonna be so much more to Ruth's character and backstory. like he was always so pale and sickly looking and then so was his uncle and I thought his uncle was sickly and Ruth had to keep healing him or something but naw he just had to run some errands for him and then the most hated mage at the mage tower was suddenly all good again? and how is maxi just suddenly so proficient at magic and runes when in book one she wasn't able to place an order with the merchant on her own? granted those are completely different things, but I didn't see the development as the story literally jumped ahead 3 years so it seemed off

-quality greatly diminished to the point of having wrong words written into sentences

-ex "Tease me all you want. Just know that I'll return it tenfold tonight."
Maxi chuckled to show that she was not afraid. "I took forward to it."
yes that says TOOK and not LOOK.

the toxic masculinity didn't really ever improve, riftan never admitted that he knew and stalked maxi when she was a literal child, and it was mentioned so many times how itty bitty she is while he's so big that it causes her pain each and every time they have sex, but he also was mentioned as constantly treating her like a child just gives me the ick (to be fair, it was mentioned 1/3 as much that riftan was acting like or being placated like a child as well), they were both insanely jealous if a member of the opposite sex even looked at the other person in such an extreme high school relationship kinda way that was incredibly cringe.

Under The Oak Tree is epic. I love this story so much. I’m sad that my time with Riften and Maxi has come to an end. They’ve been through so much turmoil since their childhood to finally get their HEA was beautiful.

Never in my life have I read anything that was so much to my liking. The whole series had everything I needed – and even things I didn’t know I needed. The first book stole my heart, but the second was even better! The story, the world, the characters – everything was top-level for me. The side stories beautifully complemented the main plot.
I was sure that after living with this story for so long, I’d feel an emptiness in my heart once it ended – but that didn’t happen. The ending was beautiful. Will definitely do a re-read – and it will be my first re-read ever.

I hope some day to see more adventures with Maxi and Riftan. It almost seemed like a teaser for Riftan’s point of view at the end, but it cut off abruptly.

I love this series so much. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time reading it but that being said, the first book was better and the ending of the second left something to be desired. The entire book Riftan and Max express their desire for a peaceful life back home in Anatol with children. They spent literally one chapter in Anatol together. I so desperately wanted them to have their happy ending and to see them get everything they had wanted while being separated the past 3 years. I really would have liked to have another chapter or two just to round everything out and finish the series without much more to desire. Overall 4/5 ⭐️

HOLY SHITTTT I’M FULLY SOBBING AGAIN I FINALLY FINISHED UTOT😭😭😭

i have thoughts about the ending, but above all i’m just very content to finally finally be able to read this transcendent (yes i said transcendent) story in its completion, after waiting for years (literally).

lipmac have been with me for a long time (a deranged thing to say but oh well) and i’ve read utot A LOT, it might as well be a thousand times. so i can say with absolute certainty that this is not the last time, seeing that i’m still fully fully invested in their story.
(i apologize in advance because every time i read utot, i’m going to be the most insufferable person on your tl)

(also the nightmare at eth lene broke my heart, putting it at the very end of the story, right after the epilogue, kinda gave me a whiplash)

Oh Dragon, I beseech thee
Take his body, broken and battered
To where he may rest
Go, oh dearest beloved
Far, far away from this turbulent land
Oh, I shall love thee
Until my dying breath.

Remains, and will continue to remain, one of the greatest love stories ever told.
