A twenty-nine year old doctor, Michael Everard, falls for the rich, attractive happily married, Julie Seymour. On the day before they have to part, because of his medical appointment in the United States, they secretly meet in an ancient church in an Oxfordshire village where a medieval carnival is taking place. There they see the ancient mural of the Sower, an event that is to have a dramatic effect on both their lives. A ghostly apparition of the Sower appears from the carnival crowd and Michael is attacked and badly injured. He awakes in a medieval village which he knows is doomed by the Black Death of 1448. With the help of a few of the villagers, including Rosamond (engaged to his saviour Markham) and Lucy (rescued from being drowned as a witch) he tries to get the inhabitants to leave. His task is not helped by both girls eventually falling for him. It is a skilfully woven tale with contemporary values and ideals and a favourite with readers for over a decade.
