At last, on Kindle, the bestselling local book of all time - Tom Slemen's legendary Haunted Liverpool 1 - the book which made Tom Slemen a household name on Merseyside, Cheshire and Lancashire - now illustrated with over thirty pictures. Tom's popular book is about ghosts - whatever they are. Every culture on earth has believed in ghosts at one time or another: . Buddha trained himself to overcome fear by sitting in a haunted cemetery, and ghosts are even mentioned in the Bible. In the course of a person's lifetime, the chances of encountering a ghost are surprisingly high. Many of the stories within this book originated from the numerous letters and phone-calls Tom Slemen received at Radio Merseyside, where he presents a regular slot about ghosts and local mysteries on the Billy Butler Show. The show is probably the most popular in the north-west and the tremendous response from listeners is confirmation of a widespread fascination in the paranormal. Take a spine-chilling journey along Liverpool's streets and meet Spring-Heeled Jack, the Penny Lane Poltergeist, the Rodney Street Spectre, Bernie with a broken neck, the Grey Lady of Grove Street and many other spooky characters and ghostly encounters!
Tom Slemen is a Liverpool writer, columnist and broadcaster, known foremostly as the author of the best-selling Haunted Liverpool series of books which document paranormal incidents and often unsolved or unusual crimes in his home town of Liverpool, past and present. --from the author's website
Not bad. Just a collection of haunted stories set in and around Liverpool. Though the author claims to have done research on a number of the stories, he give no real information about the hauntings or a place where the stories can be verified. It's kind of annoying. On the other hand, if you want to write a ghost story yourself, this collection would be a great way to get some ideas together to explore in a fictional setting. Not a few are actually chilling and one is actually quite heartwarming. I do get the impression that a number of these stories are aimed more toward the younger reader, so take it as you will.
This is the first book in the popular Haunted Liverpool series. Several of the stories were later published in collection books and have lost none of their amazing details. Unlike many of the other books in this field, Tom Slemen's books are extensively researched and often verified. These true tales will astonish, delight and unsettle you. They are also highly addicting. I read this book using immersion reading while listening to the audio book. Narrator Norman Gilligan's voice is perfect for this series, refined, understated and uniquely British. A must read/listen for paranormal lovers.
Really loved this book. Interesting facts about the place I have lived in all of my life. I have visited many of the places mentioned in this book. It also brings back memories of the club's I used to frequent when I was younger, like a trip down memory lane with a twist. I will be reading more of the series and highly recommend this author.
I too have seen a ghost - in the 1960s. Thus book is a wonderful example of an intriguing subject being researched well and packaged into a really good read. I look forward to reading the second book.

Great book full of short ghost stories of Liverpool! Part of a large series. I read this book in a day as I couldn't put it down. And I bought the rest of the series. The only criticism I would say is that the stories are very short (max 5 pages) it can sometimes feel like there are parts missing from the story or like you need to know more. From what I know of Tom Slemen, he investigated the stories personally and found a lot of his information by talking to locals. A very interesting book series I would recommend!
This is the first in a long series of volumes which Tom Slemen has collated concerning ghost stories and weird happenings from the Merseyside area. While it’s a reasonably engaging read, it’s a little unsatisfying and a little independent research will show that Slemen isn’t above making historical fact fit his story at times.
A collection of short tales of ghostly goings on around Liverpool and the surrounding area. Some of the legends I’ve heard of like the mystery German plane flying around and the body on the railway line near Broadgreen. Others I’ve never heard. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
my mum recommended this book as she is into this sort of thing and i really enjoyed not only the spirits of my city but learning some things that you may not know even if you're from Liverpool. If you're into the supernatural and into the history of Liverpool, this is the book for you.
Some interesting, spooky stories! There’s a big focus on the possibility of ghosts which leads many stories to lack sensationalism and thereby a little predictable at times. However the stories that stand out are really interesting.
My second time reading this and it was like I hadn't read it I didn't remember the stories. I love these books and being from Liverpool and having lived in several different areas it's an instant " I know that place" when I read some of them.
Enjoyed the idea of this book but wasn't detailed enough in some places. Some stories were a paragraph long with no real information. Might try another one to see if they get any better.
Good scarey stories!Too many to remember specifics. If you like short stories in the horror vein, here's your man!Nigel Peever is a fine narrator for this compendium. I was given this book free for an honest review
This is the fourth or fifth book I have read by Tom Slemen. I am never disappointed when I read a book by Tom.
Each chapter is intriguing and leaves you wanting to read another of his books. Growing up in Liverpool it is intriguing to leave about the different spirits around Liverpool.
