A lot of interesting people have manned (and womanned)Forest Service fire lookouts over the years, a great summer job that combines free rent, great scenery, minimal responsabilities, a meager but largely unearned government stipend, and hours and hours to muse and contemplate in a wilderness setting. "Go Tell It on the Mountain" is a collection of essays, stories and journal writings from the likes of Edward Abbey, Doug Peacock and R. Lightbulb (?) Winders, the last full-time firlookout at Green Mountain in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, a peak I can see from my front porch here in Everett, Washington. The view from the top is magnificent. Come to think of it, even if they never spotted a fire, these sucklers at the government teat have earned their pay after all, by sharing their stories in this book.
