Let’s start with what I loved—the art! The illustrations were incredibly charming and gave the book a lively, engaging feel. They balanced out the text-heavy design beautifully, adding a layer of humor with the sweet, witty jokes embedded in the visuals.

However, I struggled with the book’s format. The use of phrases like “oh they aren’t” and “weren’t” was confusing, especially since the opening paragraphs were written in a factual tone. It made it hard to discern when the statements were rhetorical or intended to be taken as fact. I think the phrasing could be refined to better distinguish between the rhetorical elements and the factual content.

While this book wasn’t a total hit for me, it definitely has its place. It could work well if someone reads it aloud to the recipient, adding context and clarity. Additionally, it has potential as a tool for developing reading comprehension skills with its mix of humor and layered narrative.

thank you to the publisher for an advanced copy of this book!

Book Review: Nature: Fascinating Facts You Never Knew About the Natural World!

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I just finished reading Nature: Fascinating Facts You Never Knew About the Natural World! by Eric Huang, and I can't recommend it enough! This book takes a fresh and fun look at nature, showing just how much incredible life exists all around us, even in our own backyards and homes. It challenges a lot of common misconceptions we have about the natural world, like thinking that all dinosaurs are long gone or that spiders are just creepy insects. Spoiler alert: they aren’t!

The format of the book is a delightful mix of engaging text and vibrant illustrations by Sam Caldwell. From start to finish, the visuals add a lively touch that perfectly complements the informative content. The illustrations are charming and filled with humor, making it a joy to flip through the pages. Each page is bright and exciting, with clever little puns and witty remarks from the animals that brought a smile to my face.

This book is perfect for kids curious about nature but also appeals to adults with its wealth of information. The layout is well-structured, making it easy to digest all the fascinating facts about plants and animals, both ancient and modern. It feels far from a traditional textbook; instead, it presents everything in an engaging way that captivates readers of all ages.

Overall, Nature: Fascinating Facts You Never Knew About the Natural World! is a must-read for anyone interested in biology and the wonders of our planet. Whether you're young or just young at heart, this book will keep you entertained while expanding your knowledge about the world around us!

Again, another book that dispels common myths, this time about what people think they know about animals in nature, such that all dinosaurs are extinct, or that all plants eat through photosynthesis. Because dinosaurs evolved into birds, and some plants are carnivores.

Other myths that are dispelled is that all mammals give birth to live young. But if you consider the duck-billed platypus, and the echidna, who both lay eggs, then bang goes that theory.

And of course the plants that do not get their food from the sun include such plants as the Venus flytrap, which eats insects, and mistletoe, which is a parasite that attaches to other plants, and gets its food from them.

The author also brings up the fact that strawberries aren’t actually berries, and bananas that actually are.

Kids will enjoy learning all these fun facts and probably will then turn around and spout them to friends and family. Did you know that an avocado is also considered a berry?

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review. This book is coming out the 21st of January 2025.

A perfectly fine young biology book, taking us from the first signs of life on Earth to the modern world, and covering everything you'd expect – with the emphasis on debunking common misconceptions. It doesn't only do that – we get a lot of other information about dinosaurs and other prehistoric life, and not any corrections about hot/coldbloodedness – but a speech bubble or suchlike to tell us off is on the majority of pages.

That aside, it finds room for pretty much all we'd require of such a book – everything from the woodwide web of mycelia to migrations (the Arctic tern's lifetime movements is the equivalent to three trips to and from the moon). OK, it's all fairly factoid-styled, and some pages do find it hard to convey the correct reading order of them (coral, I'm looking at you), but generally this is sound stuff, looks superb, and is well-judged for an audience from older years of primary school, when double negatives are known about and understood. The extraneous speech bubbles with wannabe-quippy comments from the critters were much less welcome, though – still, this is a strong four stars.

From fauna of prehistory to the present, from undersea to things in the air, from predators to prey and all kinds of flora this fun book both raises and answers questions while it teaches young and older alike!
The illustrations by Sam Caldwell are clear, informative, delightful, brilliantly colorful, and FUN!
Well suited for reading WITH someone any age from 7 and up including ESL, and great for gifting to everyone, but especially to a school or your local public library!

This book is everything I had hoped it would be from the description. It was full of interesting nature facts that appeal to all ages (even adults!) The illustrations were fantastic and worked so well with the text on each page. I particularly loved the little puns and humorous commentary the animals were saying in little speech bubbles on each page. This book in no way felt like a stuffy text book and it presented all the information in an easily digestible manner.

My only comment would be that the "aren't they" "oh no they aren't" is very very repetitive, but that is what I signed up for given the title, so I can't really complain.

I can't stress how well the illustrations work for this book. It's like each page is an infographic and even though the books content isn't necessarily for younger children, the illustrations make it interesting for the little ones too!

Thank you to the author, Quarto Publishing Group and NetGalley, for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. My apologies for the delay in posting, I had several familial health challenges to contend with in the past month.

There is lots to love in this children's book about nature, introducing interesting facts about plants and animals. The illustrations are great, and the layout leads you through the book smoothly. My only quibble is the hook used throughout, with the phrase "no, they aren't" - at times it's hard to distinguish between factual statements and rhetorical questions that are answered with "no, they..." and then the facts are presented.
