Checked this out from the library for my daughter but i ended up enjoying it myself. not only are the illustrations beautiful but I learned a great deal from the book (I.e. time line for forcing bulbs) highly recommend for a budding horticulturist.
I'm starting the review so I can take notes as I read. These three sentences will be removed when I'm finished. Please excuse my iPhone's sense of spelling and comma placement.
This is a very attractive book. Bright, colorful illustrations. The back cover refers to it as an "illustrated guide to all things plants". The introduction refers to exploring the ways plants "interact with the world around them", promises that we would learn that plants "act as homes to bugs and animals", and claims it will teach us "how different types of plants live, and thrive, both indoors and outdoors". The introduction concludes by saying "this book is the perfect guide whether you're growing indoors or in the great outdoors". It was therefore a great disappointment for me to look at the table of contents and see sections and chapters relating ONLY to house plants.
- We start with a three page vocabulary. I found this interesting because I have been actively growing plants for 45 years and I've never seen some of these words, nor have I ever used them. - Then there is a reasonable list of required tools. I absolutely love it that she included "patience, curiosity, compassion, persistence, and a respect for nature" as part of the tool list. - There is a list of various types of pots. Unfortunately there is little information about how to grow a plant successfully in those pots and more information about the history of Romans and Greeks and all kinds of historical people who used pots. Why? - There is a good section on light, potting mixes, water, and pests that is suitable for beginners. Note that there is no emphasis on building good soils, so this book is entirely devoted to container plants, primarily house plants. - There's a good introduction to fertilizer and plant care tags. -
A good basic book with some basics about houseplants, plus a good list of beginners houseplants. One thing I really appreciate was that it listed which plants are pet safe.
