How to Summon a Fairy Godmother

Rate this book
If a fairy godmother can get one sister into a marriage, getting another out of one should be easy

Lady Theodosia Balfour has certainly gotten the short end of the stick—her stepsister, the newly crowned Princess Beatrice, is telling everyone in polite society that Theo, her sister, and their mother are evil, wicked, and horrid people who treated her like a slave. Though Theo knows this isn't exactly true, it seems her life is thoroughly ruined by the rumor. With the Balfour family estate on the verge of bankruptcy, Theo's only path forward is a forced betrothal to the Duke of Snowbell, a foul-tempered geezer who wishes only to use her as a brood mare for spare heirs.

Desperate for help, Theo clings to the only thing that might save the rumor of a fairy godmother, one that supposedly helped her stepsister secure a prince. After discovering a way to summon a fairy in Beatrice's old room, Theo thinks her prayers have been answered. But the fairy she meets isn't at all what she imagined. Drop-dead gorgeous, incredibly cunning, and slightly devious, Cecily of the Ash Fairies is much more interested in gathering powerful favors and smoking her pipe than providing charitable magic for humans in a bind.

Before she receives magical assistance, Cecily sets Theo to three tasks, seemingly to prove that Theo is a selfless and kind person, though she begins to suspect there may be more to these tasks than originally stated. Helping her along the way are Cecily's familiars, the flirty human-turned-mockingbird Phineas and the aloof Kasara, a fox shapeshifter who should not be as handsome as he is for someone with such cutting remarks. As Theo works on her tasks, she shockingly finds kinship with the magical creatures she's helping, and starts to wonder if a continued life among her human peers is what she really wants after all.

From debut author Laura J. Mayo comes a hilarious new spin on the Cinderella tale!

In a Nutshell: A clever retelling of Cinderella’s tale from the point of view of one of her “wicked stepsisters”. Doesn’t stop at being a retelling but goes much beyond. Snarky, funny, magical. Excellent character and plot development. First of a planned duology(?) but no cliffhanger ending. A fabulous debut. Much recommended!

[Editing to Add: OMG! This is my 2000th review on Goodreads! 😮🤯]

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Plot Preview:
Lady Theodosia Balfour (Theo) has long hated her stepsister, the beautiful Beatrice who snagged the prince at the ball. Now that she is the princess, Beatrice has revealed to everyone her travails at the hands of her wicked stepfamily who treated her like a slave. Theo knows that the truth is *slightly* different, but who will believe her? Worse, Theo’s mother has forced her to be engaged to the Duke of Snowbell, an old curmudgeon with atrocious behaviour.
When Theo discovers the secret means that Beatrice used to go to the ball, she immediately plans to follow the same method: summon a fairy godmother and ask for her help. This should be easy, right? Wrong! What follows involves plenty of magic, mischief, mishaps, and mayhem.
The story comes to us in Theo’s third-person perspective.
Bookish Yays:
🧚🏻 A Cinderella retelling that begins with the fairy tale and spins off to so much more! I loved the twist on the original, and more than that, I loved how it doesn’t just invert the traditional tale (turning the good into bad and vice versa), but deepens the whole experience with new layers. BTW, I love how the word “Cinderella” is never used in the book.
🧚🏻 The initial quarter or so, which serves as a foundation for the main plot by recounting the well-known Cinderella story from Theo’s perspective. I enjoyed the wittiness of this section, as well as the glimpse of Theo’s frustration with the unfairness of it all. It establishes the key characters’ personalities well.
🧚🏻 Theo. Such an amazing and complicated character! Just like some people see the good in everyone, Theo sees the bad in everyone. Her selfishness and obnoxiousness is obvious from the start. But as she is the protagonist, I also wanted to root for her. Seeing her character grow in maturity as the book proceeds is a delight. Those who want likeable characters in the lead might find her annoying, but I love such grey characters, all the better when she has a strong spine and an equally strong mouth.
🧚🏻 Fairy Godmother Cecily is everything you would wish for in a fairy tale, and more. With her familiars Kaz and Phineas (both fabulous characters), Cecily ensures that her role isn’t limited to the typical fairy-godma job profile of providing boons and then disappearing. She’s one of the best fairy godmothers I’ve read in fiction.
🧚🏻 The character development of all “Cinderella” characters, whether the two stepsisters or the wicked stepmother or even Cinderella (“Beatrice” in this book) and her dad. Each has a novel trait that distinguishes them from their fairy-tale versions. Not a single one of these characters is a hundred per cent good or bad and each holds many secrets. Loved the depth of the detailing!
🧚🏻 Plenty of magic and plenty of magical beings as well. The magic is delightful; the magical beings are complicated but entertaining!
🧚🏻 Excellent humour throughout, with plenty of tongue-in-cheek comments, witty repartee, and pseudo-slapstick scenes.
🧚🏻 Though overall light in tone, there are many scenes where sadder emotions dominate the narrative. These are sombre and thought-provoking. But when the story gets heavy, the fun quotient keeps things balanced.
🧚🏻 I loved the way the plot stressed on the importance of “breaking the cycle” on the path to happiness. So very necessary!
🧚🏻 While I am usually not a fan of chapter titles, this book has some really amusing and quirky titles that further add to the lightheartedness.
🧚🏻 The “romance” in the book never supersedes the main plot. Moreover, while there are two potential love interests, we never see Theo torn between her feelings for them. Her attraction towards both is written equally without any defensiveness or justification. I found this writing choice refreshing. High time a FMC has two beaus and enjoys them equally without wondering about the future! Her choice at the end made this whole subplot even better.
🧚🏻 Quite a few well-handled themes and tropes in the book, including found family (with an unusual family), childhood trauma (emotional and reflective), abandonment issues (not a common trope in retellings but excellently handled). There’s even the one-bed trope for those who enjoy it.
🧚🏻 The cover: Irresistibly eye-catching and so well-suited to the plot!
Bookish Nays:
🎃 Some of the hidden plot points were a bit too obvious to me as a reader even though the character was in the dark. This genre is anyway known to be fairly predictable so this isn’t a major issue for the most part. But a couple of the developments were so blatantly leading that I couldn’t accept that the character in question didn’t *understand* what was happening.
🎃 One scene concerning an animal was a bit too gruesome. In a plot that was otherwise mostly sweet and funny, this event felt needlessly dark. Perhaps it should have kept the brutality more subtle because it spoiled the cozy vibe of the book for me.
All in all, this is the kind of book that delivers what it promises. It might not be earth-shattering or literary, but it does complete justice to its genre, and that is a big achievement, all the more if you keep in mind that this is a debut novel.
This is the first book of the ‘Fairies and Familiars’ series, currently planned as a duology. This first book has no cliffhanger and all the key arcs are complete. I am not even sure that a sequel is needed, but I won’t complain as I had loads of fun reading this. Whatever is planned for the next book and whoever it has in the lead, I’m definitely on board. (I have a feeling the narrative will shift to a particular *unfamiliar familiar*; time will tell if my guess is right.)
Much recommended to cozy fantasy lovers who enjoy retold fairy tales and grey characters.
4.25 stars.
Loved it! I was hooked from chapter one and could not put it down.
It's very well written and doesn't feel at all like a debut novel. The story is compelling, and the resolution absolutely perfect.
I loved the setting, the atmosphere and the characters, especially Theo, the MC. She is complex, funny, smart and so relatable. The other characters might not be as developed, but each of them bring something great to the table and they worked perfectly together, or against each other.
I had a great time and now I can't wait for the next book!
Thank you Orbit books.
i’m the mean stepsister who bargained with a fairy godmother and you’re her grouchy familiar who can turn into a fox, responsible for following me around while i complete a series of tasks to prove i’m a good person
this was the perfect cinderella retelling and oddly fitting following my read through of, the irresistible urge to fall for your enemy
“What am I supposed to do now?” he whispered into her hair. “Anything you want.”
4.25 ★— This was such a breath of fresh air, which, for a retelling of one of the most adapted fairytales in existence, Cinderella, is saying something.
The book’s heroine, Theo, is one of the two infamous evil stepsisters of the familiar tale, left behind after her stepsister Beatrice (aka Cinderella) has her happily ever after. Her mother’s poor financial habits have left the household in a desperate state, pressuring Theo to marry a wealthy Duke to keep the family afloat. She’s prepared to go through with until she meets the man in question and knows immediately that she cannot marry him.
Determined to do everything she can to escape this fate, Theo sets out to track down the one person who might be able to help her: the fairy godmother.
“Meanwhile, Theo was bargaining with fairies, running around with strange men who turned into animals, and getting stabbed, all so she could avoid her impending nuptials.”
From there, the story really takes off, plunging Theo into a magical and dangerous world filled with strange creatures and tricky bargains. She’s tasked with a series of challenges to earn the fairy godmother’s aid, and in the process, she discovers more about herself than she ever expected.
And what can I say? I adore unlikable heroines, especially those who have to fight against people’s perceptions of them. Theo is a such a nuanced character. She’s abrasive, sometimes thoughtless or rude, but she’s also clever and determined. What I loved most is that she doesn’t need to change who she is at her core. She matures and evolves, but she still uses her sharp edges to her advantage rather than softening into someone unrecognizable, like some retellings like to portray.
The romance stays in the background, unfolding slowly and naturally, adding to the story without overshadowing Theo’s journey.
The story, in general, employs a really fun, humorous tone and I thoroughly enjoyed the author’s deftness in depicting the dark, mischievous and sometimes chaotic behavior of the faerie creatures.
Overall, I think this is the perfect light palate cleanser for someone who wants a story that isn’t overly cozy and still has a bit of grit to it. I’d also recommend it to anyone who enjoys fairytale retellings.
I’m excited to get to the sequel!
“A magical fairy tale for the ages.
A cartload of horseshit was what it was.”
Sorry but I'm afraid this is not the Cinderella (and/or fairy godmother) you are looking for.
Yeah, I know, it's quite devastating. Then again, maybe not 😬.
P.S. Our Lord Shrimp knows I love my murderous crustaceans but I think human familiars might be the next best thing.
Full review to come. In another life. Maybe.
3.5 STARS — So what happened to the stepsisters after Cinderella married the prince? Well, one found herself needing to get out of an engagement rather than into one (To our great dismay, not everyone manages to catch the attentions of a handsome prince.) If only there was a fairy godmother around to assist...
This retelling was everything it sounded like: cute, cozy, and humorous. I might recommend the book to readers who enjoyed the writing style in Once Upon a Broken Heart or Evie Dunmore's historical romances. Not saying they're the same, to be clear, but I think you might appreciate the whimsy ✨
The imagery and prose is fantastic, if you’re looking for an immersive world packaged in a Cinderella spin-off where the FMC is one of the stepsisters, this is that…
However, I was bored. The whole time.
I firmly believe that the first 25% of this book could have, and should have been a single chapter prologue. We all know the Cinderella story and during the first 25% of this book not much is different. I would have loved to see this start at the point where the FMC finds out she’s getting married.
Around the 30% we meet the fairy godmother and things pick up and get a bit more interesting but still a bit bland.
The side characters are a bit cute, the redemption arc is redeeming, and the world is vivid and cozy.
It was good, not great, but if you really love a good Cinderella retelling this could be just the right thing.
p.s. Take what I write with a grain of salt - I’m in a cranky reading mood lately.
Thank you NetGalley and Orbit for sending this book (eARC) for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
Stunning cover!
This retelling of Cinderella is captivating and offers a fresh perspective on the classic tale. I especially enjoyed how the story explores not only the life of the stepsister but also the fairy godmother's world, revealing complex motivations and interactions that add depth to the narrative. While I initially found Theo's character a bit challenging to connect with, I appreciated her growth throughout the story, which made her ultimately more relatable and endearing. Overall, this retelling is a delightful and imaginative take on a beloved story, and I eagerly anticipate the next installment to see where the journey goes from here!
How to Summon a Fairy Godmother by Laura J Mayo is a fun listen (or read) that takes a classic tale and spins it on its head. A bit of romance and a smidge of fantasy kept this engaging, although I would have appreciated more of both. The difference between four and five stars for me was pacing-I felt that so much of the beginning was spent with a deeply unlikeable protagonist that casual readers might give up before the ultimate pay off. It took until about 30-40% to feel attachment to Theo, the main character and while I think the ending was worth it, I wish there had been a bit more nuance at the beginning to invest me in her character. To those readers I say-keep going! It really is a charming and ultimately emotionally satisfying read and you will be glad you did. The audiobook narrator is so so good and I hope to listen to more with her. Thank you to Netgalley and Hachette Audio for this listen!
The wicked stepsister gets her due—Theo's stepsister Beatrice has forbidden her awful family from visiting after her happily ever after, leaving Theo's mother to scrape up suitable marriages for her two remaining children. But when Theo is saddled with an ancient duke, she rebels. If Beatrice can summon a fairy to arrange a marriage, then Theo can certainly summon that same fairy to stop a marriage. Except this fairy says nothing comes for free—and Theo enters a deal. Three tasks to prove she's a good person, and the marriage is off. Fail...and it's her life.
This has some serious early 00s fantasy series vibes to it. I liked the nostalgia, although as always, I'm skeptical of the hot men throwing themselves at the "oh so plain" heroine's feet. A fantasy, to be sure.
Theo's character development was very nice, and she remained true to her core throughout the book. Wicked? Ehhh. Sure, she's a jerk, but the walls were built for a reason.
The ending was a bit of a surprise, more to the lack of HEA than the rest of it, which I called from a mile away. I think I had gotten used to the fantasy romances ending in HEA, and this was very much more of a fantasy than romance, with a soft love triangle with resolution to come in later books (although one lead is possibly out of the picture).
Anywho, a cute and fast book, with light themes of redemption and forgiveness, and heavy themes that nobody is perfect.
When I read, I usually jot down some notes or thoughts that I have. I did none of that here. Simply, nothing was good or bad enough for me to point out. This book was fine. The plot was fine. The characters were fine, if a bit bland. I can say the same for the concepts, themes, and execution. Simply, this book reads just like every other (mediocre) fairytale book out there, even if it is from a different perspective. I expected more subverting for a book that markets itself as such. That’s about all I have. -3 stars
I always think of this book so it's being boosted to a five star lol
Apparently 2024 is the year of the Cinderella re-telling's and I'm really not mad at it! This was exactly the fun and silly time I was expecting to find in this book. I absolutely loved Theodosia and our group of characters, the sass and the banter were perfection. I would honestly beg this author for a sequel cause I just want more of these characters and this world. I do wish it would have ended a bit differently but honestly the more I think about it the more I think it was the perfect ending for this book. Honestly the vibes of the book are just 👌🏻, its funny, cozy and really fast paced!
Overall I had such a fun time listening to this book, the narration was fantastic really brought Theo to life.
thank you Netgalley and Orbit for a copy of the audiobook in exchange for my honest opinions!
EDIT: so book 2 was technically announced AND has a 2025 release date 👀👀👀 Very excited for 'How to Survive a Fairy Bargain' 😍
Theodosia Balfour DOES NOT want to get married to a gross, elderly duke (her words, not mine). So she summons a fair godmother (the same one that got her stepsister Bea the perfect marriage) to get her out of it in exchange for proving Theo’s a good person. Of course plenty of hilarious escapades ensue and Theo discovers what she truly wants out of life.
I absolutely ADORED this book. I love a good fairy tale retelling and especially from a new perspective. This retelling of Cinderella comes after the happy ever after and follows the stepsisters on their new lives, particularly Theo. I really enjoyed having her as a main character because she wasn’t perfect. She started out super prickly and rude, but as the story continues you discover more and more about why she’s like that and by the end, I was her biggest fan. She had some amazing one liners and was a pro at insulting people, which I think in this case was an underrated skill. I also loved how the plot kept twisting and turning to leave with just the right amount of suspicion but also left enough room to be surprised by the plot twists! This story definitely kept me laughing at the all right times!
There honestly wasn’t much I didn’t like about the book! I had a genuinely fun time reading this and I would definitely recommend it to any fairytale fans looking for a new twist on a classic. I would also recommend it if you loved the Disney Cinderella sequels because I loved those movies and the vibes were just as good here!
Thank you to NetGalley for this book.
This book gave me strong vibes of confessions of a wicked stepsister by Gregory Maguire. However it is much more irreverent and starts with a stepsister that is in fact quite wicked. The world of the fairy godmother is great world building and I appreciated the redemption story along with the genuine hilarity and a fairy godmother that really could give a shit.
While reading this book I went through a roller coaster of thoughts and feelings. I could not stand Theo in the first 35% or so of the book. She seemed so obnoxious, like the typical wicked stepsister in a Cinderella story. I actually almost dnfed this book because of how much I hated her. I’m so glad I stuck it out though! Once I actually got into the main part of the story I was invested in everything that was going on. Theo becomes a lot more likable once she takes on the tasks of the fairy godmother. Her redemption story in this was so entertaining, and I went from completely despising her to loving her more than any other character.
This book is listed as an adult fantasy, but it felt more young adult to me while I was reading it. The writing style felt very similar to books like Once Upon a Broken Heart. That was actually another reason why I almost dnfed this book, since I was expecting something more adult, but as I got further into the story the writing style grew one me.
Thank you to the publisher for sending me an arc via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
It was good, except that I got bogged down in some of the tests and trial and tasks (or whatever they were) because, although they were necessary to the plot, I thought they were too detailed, and also were boring because you knew she would prevail. Except for that extraneous stuff, 4 stars.
This was fabulous!
What a lovely take on Cinderella.
This starts off with the ball and then takes a whole new angle from one of the stepsister's perspectives.
I loved the way this used bits and pieces from the original story and also introduced a whole new ploy as well.
The personalities of the characters were vibrant and fun and there is a lot of adventure that is not in the original fable.
I absolutely adored this one!!!
How to Summon a Fairy Godmother by Laura J. Mayo is a charming twist on the Cinderella story, seen through the eyes of one of her stepsisters. I was hooked from the start! Theo may seem a bit annoying at first, but as her journey unfolds, you really start to connect with her. The story is packed with fun twists, and the mix of romance and fantasy keeps it engaging throughout.
This book was so fun and satisfying! The audiobook narrator is incredible and really brings the story to life. Overall, I loved this book!
How to Summon a Fairy Godmother by Laura J. Mayo is a debut novel that follows Theodosia, one of “Cinderella’s” stepsisters as she tries to do what she can to get out of an arranged marriage. When she feels completely stuck, she stumbles upon a spell to summon a fairy godmother. But all magic has a price and this fairy godmother tells Theo she will help her as long as Theo completes three tasks. With the help of some companions, Theo embarks on her mission and hijinks ensue.
I had some preconceived notions about how this book would go based on the cover and synopsis and I’m happy to report that it delivered. Paying homage to the original story, this hilarious story had me stay up past my bedtime to finish. I really enjoyed Theo as a protagonist and really wanted her to succeed.
There were a lot of side characters that really stole the show along the way. I was partial to a certain fox character myself. I know this is a first book in a series and I’m hoping the next book will have some of the same characters.
The way this book ended, I can see it being the end of Theo’s story but I could also see the next book following her as well. I am very interested to see where it goes!
I really enjoyed this book. While it had a lot of funny parts, there were also some heartwarming and heartbreaking scenes along the way. I think if you are a fan of fairy tales getting a new spin, you will enjoy this book!
Thank you Orbit Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC!
Fairytale retellings are some of my favorite stories to read, so any opportunity to get my hands on one I will take!
I love when an author can make me have a strong feeling other than indifference to a character that was otherwise classified as a "necessary supporting character". Either to love them or hate them and Laura Mayo did just that!
The beginning of the book was a little weak for me. It was essentially a quick crash course on the end of Cinderella and I felt so much more could have been done given how the author unfolded everything perfectly after. But once the fairy godmother showed up it was like a whole new story!
The characters were interesting, the places were exactly what you'd imagine in a land of magical creatures and it kept me not wanting to put the book down.
Who knew there would be a twist!? I didn't expect any twist at all let alone several! I thought it would be a fun straight forward story, but boy was I wrong and wasn't mad about it!
Most of the time I won't buy a book after reading it as an ARC unless it's a 5 star for me but this one will be an exception and I hope they give us a STUNNING sprayed edges edition! I hope I get the chance to read the ARC of the next book in the series because I already can't wait to see what's going to happen next!
Happy release day to this book full of mischief, magic and evil step sisters.
3.5 stars
How to Summon a Fairy Godmother is such a fun read. At first, it seems like a retelling of Cinderella from the point of view of one of her evil step-sisters, Theo. And though the book takes its time painting the sad picture of Theo's life, her family's status and reputation are in the dirt and the only man willing to marry her is an old duke; there's a big twist in the plot, pace and even characterization when the fairy godmother is summoned. From then, the world is open to magical adventures and tasks, faerie parties and attractive familiars.
I had a lot of fun with the story. It's a lighthearted young adult adventure with a fairy tale vibe. My biggest issue with it, it's that the first 80 pages or so are so rooted in reality, painting Theo as the evil step-sister so she's bitter and hateful, and also a victim of the circumstances of a Victorian-esque world, but then as soon as Theo steps into the faery world I feel like her character makes a sudden turn to a modern YA heroine with non-ending sass. Honestly, the character reads so different from the beginning, from a Victorian-inspired world, that I never really got used to how perfectly brave, resourceful and extremely unaffected she ended up being when confronted with magical beings and dangerous scenarios.
Characterization aside, the book is fun. Theo must accomplish three tasks to escape her faith, and that made the book vibrant and dynamic. The romance was a bit rushed, but honestly it fit the vibe of the story.
As for the audiobook, the narrator made such a good job voicing Theo. Theo is an unlikeable character, especially at the beginning, yet she's vulnerable and desperate, and I think Josie Charles gave Theo a lot of depth. I think, for a book like this, the audiobook is such a fun way to experience the story.
Thanks to NetGalley, Orbit and Hachette Audio for an advanced copy of the audiobook.
Surprisingly enjoyable--an anti-fairy tale that never went where I expected it to. (This jaded reader finds that quite unusual--an author that can surprise me is much appreciated.)
In the telling, there were a lot of wise things about found families, generational trauma, bullying, and choosing who you want to be rather than continuing the chain.
Looking forward to the next one!
Great fun! I first noticed this book because of the cover, it is simply stunning. It reminds me of Alfons Mucha's paintings.
The story is even better. My only complaint concerns the romance, it felt slightly forced. I am looking forward to reading second book in the series.
Many thanks to Orbit Books for providing an advanced reader copy via NetGalley in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own.
In this hilarious spin on "Cinderella", we follow one "evil stepsister" Lady Theodosia. Theo's mother, Lady Balfour, finds herself widowed and left with an earldom and a privileged stepdaughter. Lady Balfour runs the earldom into the ground and forces her stepdaughter, Beatrice, into a life of servitude. But after shocking events at a prestigious ball, Beatrice is whisked off to become a princess leaving Lady Balfour and her two daughters, Theo and Flo behind.
Just as they lose hope for the future, Lady Balfour announces that Theo is to wed a Duke! But shortly after meeting her betrothed, the decrepit and disgusting Duke of Snowbell, Theo is desperate to get herself out of the marriage.
After finding what Beatrice must have used to get noticed by the prince, Theo decides to summon her own fairy godmother. To Theo's surprise, it works! Theo finds herself tasked with proving worthy of receiving help from said fairy godmother. As Theo makes her way through the fairy world, we are introduced to a plethora of rememberable characters and plenty of "LOL's". When her last task arrives, secrets are uncovered, and Theo is left with many shocking realizations. Full of lovable characters turned unexpected friends and laugh-out-loud moments, this story leaves you pondering what YOU would do if given the chance to change the hand you were dealt ...
I laughed, I cried! I really grew attached to the characters as well as lessons they were learning as the story progressed. I enjoyed this spin on the classic, lending new themes and leaving you feeling proud of decisions your new friends were making. The author took this opportunity to provide insight on what all characters were facing, making it seem as though no one was actually the villain, they were all just doing their best.
I loved book, it's so hard to explain why. The characters are deep and intriguing. Watching Theo grow and learn how to be emotionally vulnerable was such a memorable experience. This truly was a treat of a book and I hope others find it as well.
I experienced this via audio and I would highly recommend the same. The narrator did such a great job bringing the characters to life.
Thank you Netgalley and Orbit for this Arc.
One of my favorite pastimes is buying a book based on the cover alone and knowing nothing about the plot whatsover. How to Summon a Fairy Godmother caught me at first sight with the cover--I was over the moon to start reading this and I went in blind.
Boy did that make this a fun ride. Mayo's prose is delightful and had me giggling the entire time. Theo herself was the sass queen and just when I thought she couldn't top the last insult, she continued to outdo herself.
How to Summon a Fairy Godmother is a twist on the usual Cinderella story. Normally we get another Cinderella, but a slightly different setting. However, this time we start after Cinderella's happily ever after, and follow one of the step-sisters. Of course, at the beginning I was convinced that Theo was as cruel as the stepsisters are normally portrayed, but Mayo did an astounding job giving her warmth and depth. Not every main character needs to be a goody two shoes, but someone who is relatable and understandable. Throughout the story, Theo grows through tremendous growth as the readers peel back the layers of her childhood to see who she really is.
I'd rather not give too much away as I feel this is a journey best traveled with little to no information. You won't be disappointed!
I am so looking forward to the next book in the series.
. ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁ ⟡ ݁ . ⊹ ₊ ݁.Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an e-ARC for early review.. ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁ ⟡ ݁ . ⊹ ₊ ݁.
This is definitely one of my favourites of the year. Was I expecting to cry? No. Do I need a sequel or same universe story *now?* Yes.
This is a Cinderella spinoff, but it's spun off just enough that you don't roll your eyes or feel like you can breeze through sections of it. It's a new world full of dangerous faeries and creatures hiding just beyond the veil, where magic can be stolen, wishes can be thieved, and faery godmothers can be hot MILFs while also TERRIFYING ELDRITCH CREATURES.
Theo is one of the most interesting and well-rounded heads to be inside of for a fantasy story and weeks after reading this I still think back to her thoughts and words. After her stepsister won the prince's love and went off to become a princess, Theo is left at home with no money, one sister whom she despises, and her abusive mother, who wanting nothing more than to marry her off to an old, cantankerous, sexist grandfather in order to try to save at least some of their estate and dignity. And Theo is, by all means, not a good person. She has had a hard life and has let it harden her, take away her kindness and joy, leaving her cruel, mean, and hateful, but it all changed when she finds a spell to summon a fairy godmother.
The fairy, Cecily, is terrifyingly gorgeous, clearly powerful, and wants Theo to do a handful of tasks for her in order to grant her wish, so Theo is thrown into a whirlwind of stealing necklaces from faeries, being endangered by gnomes, defending a criminal in court, and all the while, dealing with the sarcastic, annoyingly gorgeous fox familiar Kasra. Cecily's other familiar, Phineas, and Kasra do their best to assist her in her tasks so that she can finally escape her dreadful life and become something more than what her mother always forced her to be--- unhappy.
Orbit, why on EARTH did you not let this one go to physical stores? I'm a bookseller and I'm telling you I would have sold BUCKETS of this book. PLEASE let it go physical! I'm literally begging.
Anyone who loves fairytale retellings with a twist and some good old fashioned romance, give this one a try.
