A longtime fan of M.J. Arlidge, I was pleased to see his collaborative effort alongside Lisa Hall. Their development of this thriller both captivated my attention and had me turning pages well into the night. The truth is out there somewhere, but it will take some coaxing.
After having a third child later in life, Natalie is feeling the pressure, as well as a great deal of exhaustion. Baby Erin has not been an easy little one, though Natalie hopes all will go well when for the celebration of her eldest daughter’s eighteenth birthday. While everyone is excited, they have reached their limit. Tensions run high between various people, but they are all sobered when it is discovered that Erin has gone missing. While the baby is found in a tree, the little one is rushed to the hospital and police arrive to investigate the abduction and potential attempted murder. When the authorities take over the investigation, they will stop at nothing until the truth comes to light, even if that means ruining a family to do so. A brilliant thriller that showcases the work Arlidge and Hall have done, as well as how captivating their collaboration proved to be.
M.J. Arlidge has long been an author whose writing is quite alluring to me. Combining it with another well-established author made this story a must-read for me! The story builds from the first page, as the reader is subjected to everything that is going on within the household. The narrative takes time to set the scene and adds depth related to the pregnancy, familial tensions, and the animosity that develops with outsiders. The mystery is strong when it begins, so much so that the reader is forced to follow along and try to make sense of what is coming to pass, as well as how much is part of a vendetta. Things gain momentum as the story progresses from numerous angles to tell a well-rounded story that leaves the reader confused and demanding more. Short chapters teased things along as well, which only added to the greatness Arlidge and Hall put on offer.
Characters are a great part of the story, telling numerous perspectives that enrich the reading experience. From the challenges that Natalie puts up with through to how each other member of the family uses their own desires to fuel a self-centred focus against Erin. The authors depict many who play a role as having a clear agenda, leaving it up to the reader to decide what they feel is the right angle.
The plot points offer up a story that never wanes in its action, even if it goes in all directions. The mystery and intensity Arlidge and Hall bring to the piece is accented by twists and ever-present twists that add something to the piece. The surprises are there for all to see and while nothing is entirely clear, there is a thread of suspicion surrounding the be diminished until the final reveal. I could not have asked for a better story in the hands of these two masters of their art.
Kudos, Mr. Arlidge and Madam Hall, for an entertaining read!

Massive fan of Lisa Hall’s books but have not read any by M.J. Aldridge so it was with anticipation I started ‘The Mistake’, got to be honest I couldn’t tell when one author started and the other stopped ( am presuming its chapters ) and the combo writing for me was seamless
The book is basically about a family ( Natalie and Pete and their 3 daughters ) whose lives,through a few life events starts to get chaotic, there is some major life events and some smaller events and these all come to a head at a party given for one of the daughters, Emily’s 18th, where all the chaos, anger, suspicion and hurt ends up with Erin, the baby daughter, going missing
It is a fast paced book with a lot of characters questioning their choices and characters seeing the others actions from their point of view, it gave a good insight into their minds and feelings however did not make finding the culprit easy for the reader ( I guessed just before the reveal )
It was a pacy, exciting and family led drama with the added bonus of a mention of Jill Halfpenny 😊 ( always a good thing )

A very tense and emotionally charged thriller with a tricky sensitive topic of an unwanted pregnancy and the subsequent disappearance of baby Erin.
The manner in which both authors managed to capture both parents moods and innerworkings made for a chilling read and could be a little intense for some readers.
The narrative switches between both Pete who spends far to much time at work and not overly keen on the news of a new arrival and Natalie who is clearly struggling with post natal depression and lack of sleep.
Both have reasons to be resentful of the baby, though I constantly thought throughout on how could anyone harm a baby?!?
The tension builds as everything comes to a head on the evening of the couples oldest daughter 18th birthday party.
I was completely hooked - thanks mainly to the constant hope that little baby Erin will be fine.

Voor Pete hoefde er geen kind meer bij. Ze waren immers gelukkig voordat baby Erin werd geboren. Zijn vrouw Natalie weet dat alles moeilijker is geworden sinds het gezin verrast werd met de komst van Erin. Haar opgebouwde leven met Pete en haar twee andere kinderen – Emily en Zadie – hangt aan een zijden draadje.
Nu zit hun huis stampvol gasten voor een feest dat Natalie niet wilde geven en nadert ze haar breekpunt. En de rest van haar gezin ook.
Ze verbergen allemaal iets en als Erin plots verdwijnt, wordt iedereen een verdachte. Natuurlijk zou niemand de baby kwaad doen, toch? Maar na het feest zijn er genoeg mensen die Natalie iets aan zouden willen doen. Zelfs haar man.
'De grootste fout' begint met een heftige proloog. Vervolgens lees je vanuit Nathalie. Ze heeft twee dochters, maar is nu in verwachting van haar derde kindje. Haar man Pete wil eigenlijk geen kinderen meer, dus Natalie weet niet zo goed wat ze moet doen.
Uiteindelijk lees je dat hun derde kindje, Erin, geboren wordt. Vanaf dat moment lijkt alles slechter te gaan bij dit gezin. Hier vertel ik niet teveel over, maar het gaat flink mis en dit heeft de nodige gevolgen.
Je leest ook regelmatig hoofdstukken vanuit Pete, de man van Natalie, en hierdoor krijg je een steeds beter beeld van bepaalde problemen en verdere geheimen in dit gezin. En dan is er het grote feest. Het feest waar écht alles misgaat, want dochter Erin verdwijnt namelijk plots.
Dit verhaal las erg prettig en ik vloog hier dan ook redelijk snel door. Toch had ik na een tijdje een vermoeden hoe het plot in elkaar zou steken en ja... ik zat in de juiste richting. De tweede helft van het boek vond ik ook een beetje langdradig.
Er komen wel heel veel verschillende verdachten voorbij, dus dat stak goed inelkaar. Echter vond ik het tegelijkertijd ook weer niet een heel verrassend plot hebben, maar dat kan ook komen omdat ik dus al een vermoeden had. Het einde gaat overigens dan wel weer opeens erg snel.
'De grootste fout' is een prima en vlot geschreven thriller, maar toch geef ik bij M.J. Arlidge de voorkeur aan de Helen Grace serie.
Verder wil ik @boekerij heel erg bedanken voor het recensie-exemplaar!

Je zou eerder denken dat het een Freida McFadden boek is, dan een boek van Arlidge. Eenvoudigere verhaallijnen in een huiselijke sfeer, niet een thriller die je van hem gewend bent.

I hattteddddd this so so much!
This whole book is just my absolute nightmare. No help from the husband, him cheating, blaming the wife for everything, not helping with the kids at all, pretending to sleep everytime the baby cried. Then the other daughters who are also insufferable. If I was the fmc I would have just run. Not that she was blameless, she made dumb choices. Hated everyone in this book. One big nightmare. And I kept waiting for the twist or reveal but unfortunately there was none. Nothing like I am used to from Arlidge.

When Natalie unexpectedly becomes pregnant at almost forty, it isn’t exactly welcome news. Her eldest daughter, Emily, is about to leave for university, while her youngest, Zadie, is now eight. Life is comfortable and she and her husband Pete are full of dreams for their future when the nest is empty. Another child now would disrupt all their lives. Ultimately, Natalie decides to go ahead with the pregnancy. Erin arrives after a traumatic birth and is a difficult baby who screams incessantly and doesn’t sleep. Natalie is in a downward spiral and her days are spent trying to survive. Pete is never home and the older children are also struggling. This is a family at breaking point. It all comes to a head the night of Emily’s 18th birthday party, when all the secrets, lies and resentments finally boil over and little Erin disappears. But which of their closest family and friends took their daughter? And why?
M. J. Arlidge has long been one of my favourite thriller authors and I’ve been loving his Crime Writers Room collaborations, so I was excited to read this collaboration with Lisa Hall. As I hoped, it was another cracking thriller that I devoured in just a few hours. Expertly written and deftly choreographed, Arlidge and Hall have crafted a thriller that keeps you guessing from the first page to the last. The heart-stopping prologue reeled me in and I remained glued to the pages as the story switched to a slower burn as we went back to the time where Natalie first found out she was pregnant. I was on the edge of my seat as tension escalated and suspicion swirled with multiple suspects in the frame when Erin went missing. I had my theories about who it was, but that did change a few times as Arlidge and Hall skillfully kept their identity hidden and created believable red herrings.
The story is told from Natalie and Pete’s perspective, offering us an insight into their mindset and motivations, allowing us to understand their actions. While they were relatable characters, they weren’t always likeable and I often just wanted to shake them. I did have a lot of sympathy for Natalie, who showed signs of postnatal depression, but I’d want to hug her one minute and be frustrated with her the next. I wanted to tell her to reach out for help and just talk to her husband. Meanwhile, Pete was useless both practically and emotionally, but reading his perspective made me confront the shades of grey that led to his withdrawal from his family and other bad decisions. I still wanted to yell at him to help his wife though. And at both of them for refusing to see how their other children were struggling.
The other characters are brilliantly written but Eve, Natalie’s best friend, is most memorable. Unnerving and manipulative, she gave me the ick from the start, and I didn’t like how she behaved around Natalie’s youngest kids. It was obvious that Natalie relied on her, but this girl was toxic and I was yelling at the pages for Natalie to cut her out of her life and talk to Pete instead.
Suspenseful, dark, emotionally and totally addictive, The Mistake is a must-read for all thriller lovers.

Ik had wat wisselende recensies gelezen, maar ik vloog door het boek heen. De schrijfstijl was dus top. In de eerste helft van het boek gebeurt er niet echt iets, de context wordt beschreven waardoor je zodra de misdaad wordt gepleegd meerdere verdachten kan aanwezig met verschillende motieven. Ik vond het niet storend dat de misdaad pas halverwege het boek gebeurde omdat de thematiek heftig is en ik daar nog weinig over heb gelezen.
Geen 5 sterren omdat ik de dader al vrij vroeg had ‘geraden’ en ik dus niet omver was geblazen door het plot.

In the first half of the book nothing really happens; the context is described so that once the crime is committed, there are several suspects with different motives. I didn’t really mind that the crime only occurred halfway through the book, because the theme is quite intense and something I hadn’t read much about before.
Not 5 stars because I had already “guessed” the offender early on, so I wasn’t blown away by the plot twist.

Two phenomenal writers collaborate on this standalone thriller - part crime & part psychological. I don’t know their writing process, but you definitely can’t see the join in this tension building tale. Opening with a powerful scene which will pull on all parent’s heartstrings, I had to put my big girl pants on to continue. It was worth it believe me.
Natalie & Pete are happily married with two daughters; one getting ready to go to university (Emily) & the other nearing the end of primary school (Zadie). Imagine then, when along comes the unexpected bundle, Erin. A new baby can put stress on the strongest foundations & it is no different here. Natalie really struggles & leans on her close friend, Eve, more & more. In fact, Eve appears to be becoming the mum or is that Natalie’s imagination & Pete is working all hours to keep the family going, or is he? Add in Emily’s dubious older boyfriend & an old flame of Pete’s & the scene is set. Oh, I forgot to mention, a disastrous party celebrating Emily’s birthday & A level results where baby Erin disappears…
The opening pulls you in instantly & I wanted to know how we had got there. Told through chronological chapters from different POVs, we soon find out in glorious dysfunctional technicolor. Circumstance can be a cruel mistress & she certainly comes to the fore in this fast paced book. My only niggle is the very end, hence dropping one star, but I know many readers will accept it for what it is. I’ll say no more, because spoilers, but I do recommend that you read it for yourself.

Een nieuwe samenwerking van MJ Arlidge met auteur Lisa Hall.
Het boek bestaat uit drie delen waarin deel één focust op de zwangerschap en de maanden na de geboorte van Erin. We leren de personages beter kennen. Natalie en Pete hebben al 2 kinderen als Natalie onverwacht zwanger wordt van een derde kindje. Natalie kijkt er niet zo naar uit om weer helemaal opnieuw te beginnen en Pete had een andere toekomst in gedachten en hoopte eigenlijk om met zijn gezin zijn ouders te kunnen bezoeken in Australië. De zwangerschap gooit alle plannen om en op de koop toe blijkt Erin geen makkelijke baby te zijn. Natalie raakt oververmoeid en Pete maakt extra lange dagen omdat hij er tegen op ziet om naar huis te gaan. Ook de spanningen met de andere dochters lopen hoog op. Van het perfecte gezinnetje zoals voordien is niet langer sprake.
In deel 2 proberen Pete en Natalie om de draad weer op te pakken en geven ze een feest voor hun oudste dochter die 18 jaar wordt. Het begint allemaal goed maar toch loopt er weer vanalles mis en dan verdwijnt Erin dan plots. Iedereen lijkt plots verdacht en iedereen heeft wel een motief.
Dit boek is een psychologische thriller die meer ingaat op de banden tussen de personages dan dat je op het puntje van je stoel zit. De onderhuidse spanning is wel steeds aanwezig omdat personages voor elkaar geheimen lijken te hebben. Als lezer zou je de personages toch eens door elkaar willen schudden. Maar ze lopen natuurlijk allemaal op de toppen van hun tenen en dan wordt er al eens een woord verkeerd gezegd.
Het boek leest vlot, het verhaal verloopt in het begin wel vrij traag maar de opbouw van het plot zit goed in elkaar waardoor je als lezer geboeid blijft en werkelijk iedereen verdacht vindt.
Een heel fijne samenwerking tussen Arlidge en Hall!
Het boek bestaat uit drie delen waarin deel één focust op de zwangerschap en de maanden na de geboorte van Erin. We leren de personages beter kennen. Natalie en Pete hebben al 2 kinderen als Natalie onverwacht zwanger wordt van een derde kindje. Natalie kijkt er niet zo naar uit om weer helemaal opnieuw te beginnen en Pete had een andere toekomst in gedachten en hoopte eigenlijk om met zijn gezin zijn ouders te kunnen bezoeken in Australië. De zwangerschap gooit alle plannen om en op de koop toe blijkt Erin geen makkelijke baby te zijn. Natalie raakt oververmoeid en Pete maakt extra lange dagen omdat hij er tegen op ziet om naar huis te gaan. Ook de spanningen met de andere dochters lopen hoog op. Van het perfecte gezinnetje zoals voordien is niet langer sprake.
In deel 2 proberen Pete en Natalie om de draad weer op te pakken en geven ze een feest voor hun oudste dochter die 18 jaar wordt. Het begint allemaal goed maar toch loopt er weer vanalles mis en dan verdwijnt Erin dan plots. Iedereen lijkt plots verdacht en iedereen heeft wel een motief.
Dit boek is een psychologische thriller die meer ingaat op de banden tussen de personages dan dat je op het puntje van je stoel zit. De onderhuidse spanning is wel steeds aanwezig omdat personages voor elkaar geheimen lijken te hebben. Als lezer zou je de personages toch eens door elkaar willen schudden. Maar ze lopen natuurlijk allemaal op de toppen van hun tenen en dan wordt er al eens een woord verkeerd gezegd.

I found this book to be deeply frustrating and ultimately disappointing. Nearly every character was insufferable, making it difficult to stay engaged or feel any emotional connection to their struggles. Pete, in particular, was a truly terrible husband and father—detached, selfish, and completely oblivious to the emotional needs of his family. His inability to take responsibility or even show basic empathy was maddening.
Natalie, while more sympathetic, came across as overly passive and constantly whiny. If her situation was as dire as she made it out to be, why lie to the doctor about what was really going on at home? Her lack of agency and refusal to acknowledge the serious problems unfolding around her was both baffling and infuriating. She and Pete seemed entirely blind to the fact that their other children were clearly struggling, and their constant state of denial only made things worse. It was obvious early on that the youngest child had serious issues, yet they seemed determined to ignore every red flag.
Ironically, the one character I actually didn’t mind was Eve. She was portrayed as some kind of creepy, obsessive figure, but in reality, she was the only one consistently trying to help. It made little sense that Natalie kept reaching out to Eve for support, only to later treat her like the villain. Yes, I didn’t love that Eve made Natalie feel guilty about considering an abortion—that crossed a line—but in the grand scheme of things, Eve was far more proactive and emotionally intelligent than the rest of the cast.
Overall, I found the story emotionally manipulative and the character dynamics exhausting. It was hard to root for anyone when the narrative kept undermining their credibility and decisions. This book had potential, but the execution left a lot to be desired.

What a boring read. None of the character were likable and MCs were the worst. ML in particular with his cheating was pathetic. He only felt bad and thought about his wife & kids after he was caught and even though he said he didn't want anything more to do with OW, especially after she outed him to his wife and destroyed his marriage, he body still reacts to her. So am I suppose to believe he won't do it again after that scene?
And the whole baby thing. It turned my stomach each time MCs talked about abortion and how unwanted the poor baby was! Every life is precious and when it's your flesh & blood, you are suppose to love it beyond life itself, but not for these 2 selfish characters!
And the whole disappearance of the kid later on, I'm suppose to believe that MMC had a change of heart when he spent the entire story not wanting her and not even doing the basics for his kid? What did the poor baby to him?
Anyway, this book left me bored to death and at the end, all it says is that he cheated on OW with his wife, then he cheats on his Wife with OW so what's it to stop him from cheating again in future? Once a cheater, always a cheater.

Wanneer Natalie zich niet lekker voelt, blijkt ze opnieuw in verwachting te zijn. Hun gezinnetje voelde compleet en ze hadden samen plannen voor de toekomst, waaronder een verhuizing naar Australië, waar de ouders en broer van Pete wonen. Ze bespreekt haar zwangerschap eerst met haar beste vriendin Eve, omdat ze bang is voor de reactie van Pete.
Wanneer ze het hem vertelt, reageert hij allesbehalve enthousiast. Hij wil absoluut geen derde kind. Toch wordt hun dochter Erin geboren. Het blijkt geen makkelijke baby te zijn: ze huilt veel en houdt Natalie ’s nachts wakker. Omdat Pete voor zijn werk vaak van huis is, komt de zorg grotendeels op Natalie neer en raakt ze steeds verder uitgeput.

Het verhaal gaat echt over communicatie die tekortschiet en over hoe een grote, ongeplande verandering in je leven ervoor kan zorgen dat een relatie onder druk komt te staan. Al met al een leuk verhaal met een einde dat ik niet verwacht had.

I like that you see the perspective of the two characters, how they think and why they do what they do. The story also clearly shows that pregnancy and the addition of a new child can be complicated. I think it is wonderful that this is described here as well. The painful and difficult moments when Nathalie feels hopeless, listless, and full of doubt as a mother are, I think, relatable to most women, and I believe it is very good that they have described this in the book. Personally, I would have liked it if the '4 Months Later' section had also described how Nathalie emerged from the deep valley; in my opinion, that would have been a nice addition.

I really enjoyed this until the 80% mark.
I liked the fast pacing and the 2 POVs, never really knowing what’s gonna happen. However, at ~70% I suspected what’s gonna be the big revelation and at ~80% I felt like it’s going in that direction PLUS diverting the readers attention towards a trope I don’t really like: The „Unreliable Woman - Can we believe her or did she just have too much win?“-Trope
I also didn’t like how everything was sorted out in the end, I would’ve enjoyed to see a little bit more about the actual conflict resolving …

Natalie en Pete leiden een gelukkig leven met hun dochters Emily en Zadie. Wanneer Natalie zwanger raakt, is ze vastbesloten de baby te houden, ondanks Pete’s twijfels. Hij heeft een drukke baan en droomt ervan ooit naar Australië te verhuizen. Desondanks verwelkomen ze allemaal de komst van Erin. Natalie worstelt echter met het moederschap, aangezien Erin veel huilt en veel aandacht nodig heeft. Tijdens een feest komen er leugens aan het licht en verdwijnt Erin plotseling. Iedereen lijkt een reden te hebben om Erin niet in hun leven te willen. Het wordt een race tegen de klok om Erin te vinden voordat het te laat is.
Noem Arlidge en ik lees het meteen. Ik vind samenwerkingen tussen auteurs vaak een verrijking, en dit boek met Lisa Hall is daarop geen uitzondering.
De opbouw is weliswaar traag, maar geeft een grondige inkijk in het leven van Natalie en Pete, hun twee kinderen Emily en Zadie, en de zwangerschap. Deze trage opbouw hield me constant in spanning over de richting van het verhaal en wanneer de actie zou losbarsten. Ik heb me zeker niet verveeld.

De Grootste Fout’ is een thriller die vooral draait om relaties, geheimen en de gevolgen van keuzes. Het boek is opgebouwd rond drie belangrijke gebeurtenissen in het verhaal. Daarnaast wordt het verhaal verteld vanuit wisselende perspectieven van Pete en Natalie, waardoor je als lezer beide kanten van het verhaal goed leert kennen.
Vanaf het begin viel Eve, de beste vriendin van Natalie, mij al op. Er zat iets bijzonders aan haar, iets dat het gevoel gaf dat er later nog meer rondom haar zou gebeuren. Dat soort subtiele hints vind ik altijd leuk om te ontdekken tijdens het lezen.
Pete daarentegen… die heb ik meerdere keren vervloekt tijdens het lezen. Waarom doe je dit je vrouw aan, terwijl er net een pasgeboren baby thuis is? En dan hebben we Vanessa nog. Die heeft echt lef. Meerdere keren in het verhaal weet ze voor opschudding te zorgen. Het boek bevat daardoor behoorlijk wat drama, maar dat past eigenlijk heel goed binnen de sfeer van deze thriller.

Het is anders dan de andere boeken van M.J. Arlidge, maar het is wel fijn om te lezen. Het einde had ik alleszins niet verwacht!

3.5 ⭐️ I think I’ve read too many thrillers and had guessed the culprit as soon as the incident occurred. An enjoyable read though and hooked me at the end.

Dit is de eerste samenwerking van Arlidge met een andere schrijver die ik las. En ging je mij nu niet gezegd hebben dat Arlidge eraan meegeschreven heeft, dan ging ik je geloofd hebben.
Is dat goed of slecht hoor ik je denken? Laat ons zeggen dat ik andere verwachtingen had 😊.
Arlidge typeert zich door de ene actie scène na de andere aan elkaar te rijgen. Het tempo is altijd hoog in zijn boeken. En er zitten best veel gruwelijke stukken in.
Dit boek is juist traag en meer psychologisch geladen. Normaal ben ik fan van psychologische thrillers, het is zelfs mijn lievelingssoort onder de thrillers.
De grootste fout is me net iets te ‘makkelijk’ daarin, heeft te weinig uitgediepte karakters en je zit niet op het puntje van je stoel.
Wel heel ontspannende en laagdrempelige lectuur waar je niet veel moet bij nadenken.
Ik dacht misschien is het voor Lisa Hall haar eerste keer dat ze een boek schrijft maar zij blijkt toch al wat op haar palmares te hebben 😅.
Ook vraag ik me altijd af hoe dat verloopt bij zo’n samenwerking. Schrijven ze beiden evenveel? Wie schrijft wat? Wie beslist wat erin mag en wat niet ?
Niet echt een verklaring voor waarom deze thriller me niet wist te overtuigen. Maar hij was oké dus 3,5⭐️.
Toch nog iets positiefs: ik had deze dader niet verwacht. Altijd fijn als je toch nog verrast wordt.
