OUR STORY A beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Within a week they’d sold 1500 copies and Lonely Planet was born. One hundred million guidebooks later, Lonely Planet is the world’s leading travel guide publisher with content to almost every destination on the planet.
I plan to use this book as a shortcut to planning family-friendly travels in off and shoulder seasons. I am so glad I pre-ordered it! In the past, I was limited to googling individual destinations and "shoulder season" or "off-season" or reading individual travel guides for places I might want to go. It was a laborious process. This book helps solve that problem.
Although it does not give you 100% of the picture for each destination, it did give me enough to determine if I would be interested in learning more. I appreciated the age rankings for each destination, as well. They allow me to prioritize certain destinations when my children are younger vs. when they are older.
There are definitely destinations on this list that I would not have ever considered, and I enjoyed finding new options to introduce my kids to new cultures.
Fantastic book for parents with kids! Organized by each month of the year with the best places to travel, the best age range for children (especially helpful for parents with kids under 5), and fun things going on at that time of year.
