OUR STORY A beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Within a week they’d sold 1500 copies and Lonely Planet was born. One hundred million guidebooks later, Lonely Planet is the world’s leading travel guide publisher with content to almost every destination on the planet.
I have read quite a few Lonely Planet travel books and absolutely loved them. So I was really looking forward to reading this book of weekend trips in Europe to give me some inspiration. Sadly it didn't quite live up to expectations
The book is split up into 4 sections: Southern Europe, Western Europe, Central & Eastern Europe and Northern Europe. Each individual destination has some general information, a map and a big photograph of the area on the first 2 pages. Then on the second spread of pages, each destination has 4 or 5 activities or things they recommend doing in that area. Plus a few photographs and a little information on on how to get there, where to stay and eat (which generally I found pretty useless information) and events to attend throughout the year.
Unlike all the other Lonely Planet travel books that I have read, this one sadly doesn't have any information about disabled accessibility on the towns/cities or even for specific activities. This is such a shame as it is something I needed and a let down compared to other Lonely Planet books that have this information.
I sadly don't think the photographs sum up a lot of the places shown and feel the photos could have been used to show off the areas more.I also wish the photographs had been labelled so that it was easy to work out where or what each one was.
I found the book to be rather centred around Spain, Italy, France and the UK and would have liked a little more variety of places. I have been very lucky to travel especially Southern Europe and so found the places chosen to be a little obvious. I was hoping for more variety. Also the majority are cities and I would have liked some more rural or areas of natural beauty with bird/nature watching to be included more. Perhaps I am just not the target audience for this book despite wanting to go on weekend trips in Europe! I did find about 15 new places I want to go to which was a success but I will have to do more research to understand if they are accessible.
Overall, for someone that doesn't know Europe, this will be a very helpful book. Sadly I have been to many of the destinations as theybwere all the rather obvious choices. Despite this, it is still an interesting book that I would recommend for first time Europe travellers!
Please note that I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.
This lovely gem of a travel book arrived the other day and I am pumped. Thank you so much @lonelyplanet @haxhette and publicist @sabrina_dax_pr for sending me my very own advanced copy of 100 Weekends In Europe! Europe is one place I have yet to visit but want to. And this book is spurring me on to make it a reality. The idea of planning a European vacation has always seemed daunting as there are so many “must see”places but I also don’t want to miss out on the hidden gems that are off the beaten path. That’s why this book helps. It showcases the must-see and hidden gems. For me, time is definitely an issue. I can’t take months off work to travel Europe and see everything in one trip. But according to 100 Weekends In Europe, I can plan quick trips to numerous places without feeling like I’m missing out. I can visit Mount Etna, a mythical Volcano in Sicily one day and jet set to Southern Sardinq and drive along the “jagged cliffs and sparkling shores” en route to Strada Panoramica della Costa del Sud. The possibilities are endless. Although for me, travelling to Europe from Western Canada every weekend isn’t financially viable nor time permissible, I can certainly go there for the summer and pack in as many of the suggested weekend trips in 30 days as possible. I’m excited.
I love this book so much. Not only are the photos stunning but there is a wealth of information for the novice traveller like me. For example, each destination in the book has a “Practicalities” section, detailing “How to get there” “When to Go” and “Events” to see. This definitely makes it easier for travellers to plan their destinations and time of year to visit.
After perusing through the stunning pages of 100 Weekends In Europe and reading all the information, I feel confident that I can now plan my dream European Vacation.

I love the idea of short trips, especially tacked on to longer trips to really take advantage of all there is to see, and also to know where you’d like to return to spend more time. There’s so much to see and do, and I dream about it all the time. As ever with Lonely Planet, beautiful photography abounds, as well as practical tips, maps, and activity lists.
2025 is the year I vowed to start traveling more and get off the beaten track. Unfortunately I was overwhelmed with so many places to go and see so I was grateful for this book and the information it included. It helped make planning easier. I liked that it included how to get there, where to stay , when to go and restaurant suggestions.
I found it very well organized and enjoyed all the pictures.
A very special thanks to @lonelyplanet and @sabrina_dax_pr for this #gifted copy
Well-presented book based on a very doable concept. I was really looking forward to reading this. Sadly, little information was provided per destination, so for most places I didn't learn anything new. There were a few locations I hadn't considered before and am now inspired to go to, but otherwise it was quite a quick read for me.
I love this! It is a gorgeous book and would be a great gift for anyone who loves to travel. The perfect coffee table book! I really appreciate the layout and the tips on quick trips nearby. Highly recommend
Thank you, Lonely Planet for this gifted copy! I loved all the European weekend getaways in this book! Also doubles as a beautiful coffee table piece :)
