On the When a bear takes a stroll through the woods, he runs into the greatest gift of his life... or rather, that gift runs into him.
Years before, Valentine and the rest of his bear sleuth were captured, tortured, and bespelled by a circle of witches. Even after getting rescued, he still struggles with the aftereffects, and not just because the spells were reinforced with blood magick—demon blood, making them exceptionally difficult to counter. Finally, the Horseman of Death appears with the answer.
While the removal of the spells is nearly as agonizing and exhausting as having them placed on them in the first place, the sleuth still decides to go for a celebratory run. In his sluggishness, Valentine gets distracted by an enticing aroma and doesn’t move fast enough, getting struck by a logging truck. As he struggles to get away on three limbs, the driver exits the truck, and Valentine is hit by the realization that the human is his mate—Stone, according to the name on his shirt.
Even with a newly broken arm, Valentine realizes he just may be having the best and worst day of his life. He’s just met his mate... if he can find Stone, that is.
I was reading along thinking, "not bad for recent Richard's work - a few holes and a gap where there seemed to be missing information, but not as bad as some ..." when BAM!! It ended in the freaking middle of the story! I hate it that I can not seem to walk away from a new book when I know her stories are getting worse, but I keep hoping for the old Charlie Richards who wrote stories!! 2024- Still Sucks - On the last 10 or so books in my obsessive re-re-read of the series that make up the Stone Ridge world - all 187 of them - whew! While I have re-read the individual series, this is the first time I have read all the series in order for the world.
I usually don't have anything bad to say about this author's books. They are usually fun light reads. However, the sudden almost abrupt way this one ended without key storyline features being resolved was disappointing.
The MCs were getting close, then an unexpected event happened, and the entire story wraps up in under 10 pages, without the event being resolved and their mating being a 2 paragraph footnote.
It's as if the author looked at their laptop and noticed that they met the word count needed and just ended the story at what would normally be around the halfway point. Very sloppy.
What the heck? It ended in the middle of the story. They weren’t even bonded when the book just stopped! Don’t misunderstand this was a great read until there was no real ending.
I’ve loved this universe, but the books are getting more and more rushed and just ending, in seemingly the middle of a story.
Logger hits bear, bear recognizes him as mate, bear tracks down trucker. Bear makes date and woos his mate to be. Stone served with papers for child support they go to alpha Declan all is revealed. Trying for custody of child. And starting the bond. Book doesn’t feel finished.
I purchase & read just about all of Charlie Richards books!!!! I love how this series interacts with the others - Stone Ridge & Loving nip!!!!! But uuuuggghhhhh I wanted to scream at the end of this book - I wanted to see them finish the bond but also wanted to see how they deal with the baby's momma!!!!! I so hope that they continue this with the next book???? Thank you Lori
Good story but they always end right when it gets interesting. Also even with a mate pull, one day he is completely straight and the next day boom. The stories are good but at the price you should either get 2 of these or a longer story that doesn't quit when it gets going good.
While I appreciate the book is about the two main characters, throwing in a curve ball in the last chapter and then finishing the book with no outcome is just not right. I would have given 5 stars had CR added a bit extra to finish the curve ball.
I just didn't feel a strong connection between these guys. AND there wasn't much reciprocation. No anal sex and no oral on Stone's side of the relationship

I've noticed lately that there is an almost rushed or unfinished feel to the books in this universe. This one especially left me with a feeling of HFN ending instead of the HEA we are used to by this author.
