Cold-blooded murder. Hot-tempered suspects. A hard-nosed cop who'll stop at nothing to bring the guilty to justice.
When an exhibition ice hockey tournament rolls into a steamy tropical town in North Queensland, Australia, the excitement among locals is through the roof. But when a top player is found brutally slain on centre ice, all remaining matches are immediately cancelled. The Yorkville CIB, headed up by the irrepressible Detective Sergeant Jack Lisbon, wastes no time swinging into action to get to the bottom of this baffling mystery.
The victim, Jonas Eriksson, a jaded import from Sweden who’d failed to achieve his dreams in the NHL or European leagues, harboured a truckload of dark secrets. A dirty and ruthless right defenseman with enemies galore – among opposing clubs, fans, and even his own teammates – the police will have their work cut out finding Eriksson’s killer among the cavalcade of suspects. The pressure is on from the public, the media and politicians – find the culprit fast!
Aided by Detective Constable Claudia Taylor, DS Lisbon navigates a tightrope of testosterone-fuelled egos among the players, an adoring fan prepared to do anything to help her favourite team, an angry ex-wife, and a couple of surprise suspects no one saw coming.
“Cold Shot”, the eight book in the Fighting Detective series, is a chilling thriller with all the elements you’ve come to love in a Jack Lisbon whodunit. Wit, grit, a fascinating support cast, and a twisty plot that will keep you turning the pages well into the night. The perfect book for fans of American crime-writing giants James Patterson, David Baldacci and Michael Connelly, or British masters of police procedurals Ian Rankin, Peter James and Val McDermid.
Blair Denholm is a freelance writer and translator who has lived in Moscow, New York, Munich, Abu Dhabi and Australia. He has written content for commercial websites and done corporate voice-over work in English and Russian.
His first novel in the Gary Braswell series, SOLD, was released by Clan Destine Press in November 2017 and is getting rave reviews. He is also working on a murder mystery based on a real event that occurred in Moscow in the late 1980s.
Blair interpreted for the Reagan-Gorbachev summit in Moscow, translated for the Sochi Winter Olympics and voted in a foreign election despite having no eligibility to do so. He was also almost lost at sea on a dilapidated Russian fishing boat sailing from Hobart to New Zealand. He currently resides in the beautiful Southern Downs district in Queensland with his partner Sandra and two crazy canines.
First and foremost, a large thank you to Blair Denholm for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.
A great fan of Blair Denholm and his Jack Lisbon series, I eagerly accepted an ARC of the eight novel in the series. Denholm has made great effort to focus on many sports as he cycles his sharp-witted detective through numerous cases and this is no exception. When a touring hockey team arrives for some exhibition play against an Australian team, the discovery of a bludgeoned hockey player on the ice after a post-game reception has DS Jack Lisbon on the scene. He searches for motive and opportunity and learns a great deal about the player and his life away from the ice, while solidifying his blossoming relationship with a colleague. A great story that shows Denholm’s abilities throughout!
While ice hockey is not the first things many might associate with Australia, there’s a exhibition tournament in North Queensland that has everyone abuzz. The rink is full and the action is high, but it is the discovery of the body of a top player post-game that stops play and sends DS Jack Lisbon in to investigate. The man has had his face pummelled in, as though there was a vendetta to resolve. Yorkville Criminal Investigation Bureau works hard to contain the scene and begin interviews, as DS Lisbon tries to handle the case swiftly, as per his orders from above.
Jonas Eriksson was more than simply a hockey player. Many had issue with him, both here and in his homeland of Sweden. While he never made it to the NHL, he was a threat on the ice and created a number of strong resentments over his playing career. His wife, too, has reason to dislike him, but her passive nature leads DS Lisbon and his partner, DC Claudia Taylor to wonder if there is something their missing.
While DS Lisbon and DC Taylor try to understand the case a little better, they are also juggling their blossoming relationship, which has them keeping tings secret. If that were not enough, DS Lisbon is trying to adjust to single parenting as his pre-teen daughter, Skye, is now living with him. The case takes some odd twists, as does the relationship and soon there’s a suspect. Problem is, nothing sticks to him and so that only sends the entire Yorkville CID into a tailspin. A great story that is full of action and excitement from the opening pages until the final reveal.
I have been following the writing of Blair Denholm for a few years and loved every minute. He adds great writing and setting. To keep his stories edgy and highly addictive. The narrative builds from the opening pages, which has the reader guessing throughout. Decent characters and development of his core group has Denholm baiting the trap for the curious reader to beg for more. Quick chapters move things along and plot points keep the reader wondering. It is a light and quick read, but with substance as the mystery blossoms at just the right time. I am highly impressed once more and cannot wait to see where DS Lisbon will head next!
Kudos, Mr. Denholm, for impressing me at every turn!
Detective Sergeant Jack Lisbon ,his daughter Skye and Detective Claudia Taylor were enjoying a game of Ice Hockey when they were asked to investigate a case of a home invasion. Then Jonas Erikson is found brutally murdered .The detectives get busy going around finding clues to the murder. A fast-pace suspense with humour to this intriguing read .
“I went to a fight the other night and a hockey game broke out” Our thriller tale begins ‘in Australia, where ice hockey ranked marginally above competitive marbles as a serious sporting pursuit’. Which I thought odd, since rugby is soo soo soo much more a contact sport than American “football”. Due to the violent nature of ice hockey, it proves difficult for our crime solvers to separate the rink rough-housing from the sideline shenanigans. With more twists & turns than a Hurricane, readers are treated to interference and misconduct by the multiple suspects & persons of interest.
Some sage advice from the author: Don’t ‘go off with the fairies’ too much or too often. ‘The tiniest detail could be more important than you think.’
Fave line: ‘But some things are more important than the job.’ I absolutely LUV that Skye plays are bigger role in this series. Sad that she lost her mother, but that’s life innit.
May we still be standing no matter how many pucks and cheap shots life throws our way.
Loved this installment in the series, and think Jack just gets better and better. This story is based around the murder of a foreign visiting ice hockey player, and as always has a strongly moving plot and great characters. The developing relationship between Jack and Claudia is a nice sideline to the main story and shows a softer side to jack which is nice. Having said this is part of a series, I think it would work as a stand alone and would thoroughly recommend it.
Totally awesome job , author!!! What a grand exhilarating ending. My adrenaline was whooshing in my ears like ai was running the minute mile (I'd never make it a few feet) !! Lol. I love Jack's persistence into even the smallest details. He's like a magician pulling a rabbit out of his hat. When the odds are down and it's the last minutes of the game, count on Jack and Taylor to pull it out and make a win. Victory was so good I could taste it vicariously. I didn't put the pieces together, but it was a great journey.
Possibly the best book in the series so far. Believable storyline, good characterisation, and enjoyable from start to finish. Recommended. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Detective Sargeant Jack Lisbon sails through a new mystery!
Australian author Blair Denholm lives in Tasmania at present, but has lived and worked in New York, Moscow, Munich, Abu Dhabi in addition to Australia. He has published nineteen books – including ESCAPE FROM PASSING WINDS, SOLD, SOLD TO THE DEVIL, FIGHTING DIRTY, KILL SHOT, SHOT CLOCK, TRICK SHOT, REVOLUTION DAY, SHOT TO THE HEART, DROP SHOT, POINT BLANK, MOVING TARGET, and now COLD SHOT. Blair is also a translator, speaks fluent Russian (he interpreted for the Reagan-Gorbachev summit in Moscow and translated for the Sochi Winter Olympics Organizing Committee) as well as a traveler and has escaped situations and detainments in life much as he writes in his books! COLD SHOT is the eighth installment in his series – the Jack Lisbon The Fighting Detective Crime Thriller – centered on a tough, cynical, ex-boxer London cop, who has become a terrific character to follow.
Having established a strong character in Jack Lisbon, Blair opens this episode as follows: ‘In the fading light of the late afternoon, the world outside sweated in jungle-green lushness. Amongst the tropical foliage that framed both sides of the road, signs advertising tonight’s exhibition ice hockey match hung from light poles. As the Melbourne Mavericks’ team bus ferried the players to the newly built Yorkville Entertainment Arena, Jonas Eriksson stared out of the window…’ For those new to this series, the image of Lisbon is clear, but that perception changes rapidly as the condensed plot shares: ‘When an exhibition ice hockey tournament rolls into a steamy tropical town in North Queensland, Australia, the excitement among locals is through the roof. Aided by Detective Constable Claudia Taylor, DS Lisbon navigates a tightrope of testosterone-fuelled egos among the players, an adoring fan prepared to do anything to help her favourite team, an angry ex-wife, and a couple of surprise suspects no one saw coming.’
COLD SHOT continues his solid writing of a suspense thriller with some philosophical asides that focus on many of our current obsessions. Blair keeps us guessing (as reading detectives) while he places the spotlight on the fascinating Jack Lisbon. Top notch!
Detectives try to understand mangled body on floor of ice rink - 4.5 stars
Jack Lisbon and his partner Claudia Taylor are surprised to learn that the exhibition ice hockey match that they had just viewed was the location of a brutal murder after the rink closed for the night. Since their day jobs were as detectives for the small Australian town of Yorkville, they were summoned to solve the crime in a sleep deprived haze.
Jack had been a member of the Queensland Police for nearly ten years after leaving London police; The circumstances surrounding his departure were hazy. In his continuing career as a policeman, Jack sobered up and had a stellar record of quickly solving crimes. Jack managed to spend time with his daughter (Skye) who had settled in with him after his ex-wife died of Cancer. Jack could be angered easily but usually was able to restrain his impulses to tamp down inappropriate words and occasional extrajudicial punishment.
We hear Jack' inner voice when he is dealing with petty crimes, holding back his feelings and usually staying within the guidelines of proper police conduct. Claudia occasionally had to remind Jack that he needed to restrain himself. As the story progressed, Jack and Claudia changed their relationship making for more human interest while still performing their jobs.
Because there was little physical evidence about the crime. The ice delayed the some of the victim's slow decay. There were no fingerprints, footprints, no weapons, and no cell phone. Jack tried to finesse facts when he interrogated possible suspects. Jack's frustration about the suspect's truthfulness was palpable. He could not depend on just his intuition. Having a well-placed friend back in England, he tried to call in a favor from an overseas friend for help. The hockey players, staff, and support people were convincingly clueless about incriminating evidence. There were certainly suspicions but nothing that could hold up in a court of law.
The investigation was put on ice for several months until a seemingly innocent tip turned up enough new information sufficient to renew the investigation. While the game of ice hockey always has violent confrontations on the ice, most off the ice relationships seemed innocent. Figuring out who was not telling the truth required more than reviewing video tapes. Reading a fighter's body language was one of Jack's specialties. The wrap up includes a bit of physical fighting, not unlike the game of ice hockey. Jack was in his element. Cold Shot was a credible, high-action thriller.
Another enjoyable Jack Lisbon thriller set in steamy Queensland where he 'fled' to five years ago. For those of you captivated by the sophistication of poetry writing Inspector Dalgliesh or Classical music afficionado Morse then this detective is cut from a different stone – granite. A corrupt, alcoholic murderer who enjoys bringing his boxing skills to his police work and would use a 'Glasgow kiss' as an interrogation tool if he could get away with it. Greed, blackmail, rivalry and lust are all mixed into a brutal murder story laced with a few red herrings to give the plot additional spice. I loved it when they suspected a female living of 'immoral earnings' only to discover that she is on on line investment advisor who earns more than them!
The author manages to capture the steamy atmosphere of Queensland, the frustration the police often feel when under pressure to solve crime as well as the grit and passion of ice hockey. The elements make the reader feel as if he is an onlooker to the action.
A nicely crafted, enjoyable novel that builds on his previous Lisbon works. If you haven't read any of the author's other detective stories then give this one a try though reading them in order will put the development of the 'hero' into context.
Finally, just to confound my description of Lisbon, we find him listening to Bach.
I've been a fan of Jack Lisbon's for a while now, and I've always enjoyed the books immensely, which is why I was surprised when I struggled a little with this one. Don't get me wrong, I still liked Cold Shot, but for me, there were just a few too many characters to keep track of (though, yes, I know, hockey teams and all the people who are involved etc...). However, I am glad Jack is still his slightly grumpy, but well-meaning self. I will say now that I am so happy things are starting to move forward with Claudia and Skye. Overall, I still found this to be an enjoyable read and the entire series is a high recommend!
Thank you Blair Denholm for my copy! I received an ARC of this novel and am voluntarily leaving a review. All above thoughts and opinions are my own.
Thoroughly Entertaining. I’ve really enjoyed every book in this series. Blair Denholm has become one of my favourite Authors to look out for. He has that unique ability to pull you into the story, so nothing else exists around you. The book grabbed my attention right from the start. Jack Lisbon is a gritty no-nonsense detective, and I love that he can’t stop thinking about his co-worker DC Claudia Taylor. He’s liked her for quite a while, so hopefully he doesn’t mess this up. Jack is meticulous when it comes to investigating a murder, and he won’t let up until he finds who’s responsible. There is a lot to like about this book and I would certainly recommend it. 5/5 Star Rating.
Recommended. I really enjoyed this book from start to finish. Good storyline and the characters very believable. Murders seem to follow D I Lisbon. Lots of action dead ends and some lucky breaks. Awaiting the next book in the series. Well done.
Another great Jack Lisbon story. Claudia and Jack are the perfect duo to solve the case. I love how they work together, and I can't wait for their next case.
Detective Sergeant Jack has his work cut out for him. A star player in a hockey tournament is found dead, who and why was this crime committed. He wasn’t a favourite, but is that a reason for murder. Suspenseful and lots of secrets to make this an outstanding book.
