Sometimes You Fall

Rate this book
They used to call me one of the greatest baseball pitchers of all time.

Now someone is about to call me ‘Dad.’

Losing my major league baseball career led me back to my hometown with a chip on my shoulder and no one to blame but myself.

And even though I reluctantly just agreed to help coach the high school baseball team, my life felt flat.

But when my crush from high school tells me she’s pregnant after one hot night together, my dull life from before becomes anything less than boring.

Unfortunately, the way I found out was after her teenage son broke into my automotive repair business, making our relationship even more complicated.

Scottie Daniels has always been the girl that got away.

But now that she’s having my kid, the dream of a family with my dream girl becomes the only thing I can focus on.

Can I persuade her to give us a chance at having a family?

Can I get her son to let me in too?

And can I also convince Scottie that sometimes you fall—but you can fall into the right place at the right time with the right man when it counts?

"History is repeating itself, and I’m the fool who thought I’d learned from my past."

This book was beautiful!!! I have loved this series so much! And I thought nothing could top the way I loved the second book in this series. But Harlow went and proved me wrong again! I'm honestly speechless after finishing this book. It was perfect in so many ways. From the adorable friendship, these two shared at the beginning of the book to the sweet moments they shared as they rekindled time lost and feelings they never shared with one another. I love friends to lovers so much! And the way Harlow brought these two back together even after being apart for years and much life lived while they weren't in each other's lives was so beautifully done.

"The man who loves me now, showing me that sometimes, when you fall, the right person will be there to pick you up and guide you to your next adventure—the one you were meant to take all along."

Grady was the perfect example of a possessive teddy bear of a man! His small gestures were a favorite of mine. I also loved the way he was always reminding her that he cared without coming out and saying it because he feared it would scare her off. And the relationship that grew between her son and him was perfect. Grady became the man that this teenage boy needed in his life. Not just when they were dating, but also when they were rekindling their relationship! I loved it.

Scottie was one strong FMC. When faced with any obstacle, she pushed through and came out even stronger. She was also the best mother to her son. They shared the sweetest relationship. I loved her character so much!

Going into this book, I didn't realize all the amazing tropes that Harlow had in store for us. And the way each of these were handled made me love this book even more. Especially since most of them are a favorite of mine! Harlow nailed this book! And I can't recommend this series enough. It's heartfelt. Sweet. And so beautifully done!

“You’re my best friend, and the woman I’m meant to be with. No one else ever stood a chance. Do you realize that?”

Dual Narration
Narrated by Sebastian York and Samantha Brentmoor

AHH! There couldn't have been a better duo to bring these two characters to life. Samantha's sweet, sultry voice was the perfect fit for Scottie. She brought out both her bold side and her sweet, motherly side so well! Samantha in duet is a favorite of mine; HOWEVER, when I see that she's performing an audiobook in dual narration, I'm never upset about it because her male voice is TOP NOTCH! I enjoy it so much! 🔥 Sebastian plays gruffy Grady! The grumpy MMC whose dream of playing professional ball was shattered when he hurt his arm playing... resulting in him returning home and following another dream of his. Sebastian is a favorite of mine, and him as a grump only makes me love his performance even better. Sebastian did such a wonderful job with Grady's character. And the way he brought so much emotion to Grady's feelings he's always shared for Scottie. It was so well done and had me swooningggg! These two really were the perfect match for these two characters! I loved every second of this audiobook, and it only made me love this book even more.

Harlow James' writing. Sebastian as a grump. Samantha's sweet voice playing a single mom. Need I say more? I don't think so! I think that pretty much sums up the best parts of this audiobook!

Sometimes You Fall was my first Harlow James book, and I really loved this small town, friends to lover's romance.

Grady and Scottie were friends who had crushes on each other in high school. They drift apart after going to college, and their lives take them in different directions. Grady was an MLB pitcher, but he returned to his hometown of Carrington Cove after he had a bad injury. Scottie returns to her hometown for a visit and reconnects with Grady. They finally acknowledge their attraction and share a hot night together. Scottie disappeared after their night together but moved home a couple of months later with her teenage son. However, she is returning with a surprise. She is pregnant.

Grady was pretty hurt that she left after their night together, but he steps up when he finds out she is pregnant. He is doing everything he can to show Scottie he wants to be a good father. This man was so sweet, reading the pregnancy books and shopping for baby stuff. I loved how all in he was. Grady also worked really hard to build a relationship with her son.

I just had a hard time with how much Scottie pushed him away. She was a little over the top with her pregnancy hormones and crying because he didn’t get the right orange popsicle.

Sometimes You Fall by Harlow James

"You make me feel like a piece of my heart exists outside my body, and I want to do anything and everything I can to protect it."

Sometimes You Fall is the third book in the Carrington Cove series, but you can read it as a standalone. This story features a friends-to-lovers dynamic and an accidental pregnancy—two tropes I don’t usually gravitate towards—but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it! Scottie and Grady start as high school friends with crushes on each other but know that life will take them in different directions. Sadly, they drift apart and eventually lose touch. However, when Grady returns to town after an injury ends his baseball career, fate brings them back together one night at a bar. They spend a memorable evening together, but Scottie feels the need to run away the next morning. Weeks later, their paths cross again in an unexpected way!

Scottie is an incredible softball player with dreams of joining the national team, but when she unexpectedly finds out she’s pregnant, she makes the tough decision to put her dreams on hold. Her marriage turns out to be quite different from what she thought, leading her to a divorce. Ultimately, she decides to return to her hometown to start fresh. Because of her past, she’s built up some high walls and promised to stay away from relationships. It does take time, but eventually, she opens her heart to give Grady a chance to prove that he’s not like her ex.

"The second you reentered my world, I knew what had been missing. His loss is my gain. You've completed my life, Scottie."

Grady is a grumpy yet lovable former baseball player who now owns a mechanic shop called Grady’s Garage. His injury has left him feeling a bit lost, but everything changes when he sees Scottie again. He knows he wants to be with her right away. I adored all the little things he did for Scottie and her teenage son, Chase. His constant reminders of how much he cares tugged at my heartstrings. Not only does he prove himself over and over as the perfect match for her, but he also becomes the father figure that Chase needs.

I also loved the close-knit friendships highlighted in this book. The support and love among the characters are heartwarming! There are familiar faces from previous books that I’m excited to learn more about, and I'm looking forward to their stories, too. Thank you to Harlow James and The Author Agency for the amazing eARC!

This could actually be a 3 star read but I’m rating it 2.5 because I wanted to be pointed about how I feel.

First of all, the MC’s had more chemistry when they were just friends and nothing. I mean not even a kiss was between them. When it was just an idea, a feeling.

As the story progressed we even loose sight of their friendship. They loose contact for years and then they’re back together for one night only (yk the song and dance). That night, I’ll give credit where it’s due was hot as hell. They had intense Chemistry when they were filling each other in on their respective life’s. The banter, the pointed flirting, the intimacy after wards, It was all very intense. I was excited for their story but when it began to unfold properly, it was just underwhelming. The chemistry from their one night action was gone. It was just all about babies and sex and putting a ring on her finger.

I can imagine you find that cute. I usually do too but this is book is what sigmund Freud references when he states “women receive passively and add nothing of their own” or even his believe that woman are only dominated by their reproductive needs to become mothers because that was the only thing portrayed here. Babies! Babies and more babies! Along side single mothers and not thriving ones. The ones that were done dirty by a man and had to pick up the slack.

I was even excited for the relationship between the MMC and the FMC’s son from her first marriage because in these books “the father that stepped up” thing makes it all very emotional and ties the story up perfectly especially if you factor in all the absent fathers the author shoved in the plot. Their relationship development would’ve been nice to see on page but it wasn’t showed to me, It was told to me and I’m not a fan of that because it completely takes away from any liberation or should I say lesson the author was trying to illustrate with all the laboring single mom’s in the story.

Sigh I was pissed all the way off especially bc the plot had potential. It was a relatively long book but I had no hardship reading it. The writing was good enough to keep me hooked but the execution? I would give it a zero but that’s too harsh.

Sadly this is a DNF for me. I've been enjoying this series and Harlow James' other books, but this one missed the mark for me. To be fair, the tropes are not my favorite so that is definitely a personal problem. However, when the first scene at the doctors office happened, I knew I had to put this book down.
The female doctor walks in and checks out the hero and he notes that he gets that a lot. Are we not over this in books yet? That's not realistic that an attractive male gets looked up and down everywhere he goes. Especially in a professional setting with the doctor at the doctors office.
Also, he notes that he is jealous of the doctor getting to be up close and personal with the heroine's parts during this exam. Unfortunately, this book was not for me but I will be giving the rest of the series a chance.

The book was truly subpar with glimmers of what could’ve been.

You may or may not like this friends to strangers to lovers story… at 82% they’re still not a couple even though they’re having a baby and hooking up again…

Scottie is a great mother and daughter and seems like an alright friend. She’s good at her job. In every aspect in terms of Grady, I hate her stinking guts. If you’re wanting to see two friends reconnect, become parents and build a life together, you will be disappointed.

Scottie fights Grady every step of the way. In any other regard, I would be all for the MMC making all the compromises in the relationship but Scottie isn’t making any of this worth it to me. She’s annoying and whiny in terms of her non relationship to Grady. I’m not sure if there’s not enough time to make up but she has serious problems because of her ex husband and she’s doing nothing to fix them just sticking her head in the sand.

I would’ve liked this story more if they had been on the same page and got to experience them as an actual couple. Like if she didn’t have history with Grady all her concerns over history repeating itself may have credence but she from her own admission states that Grady isn’t anything like Andrew and this pregnancy is wholly different, so why are we all suffering?!

“At least you’re trying, Scottie. That’s all I ask. And soon, you’ll realize you don’t have to carry the mental load alone because I’m here, and I’m not letting you go again. No way in hell.”

But was she actually trying? No.

Like… Scottie took her evil ex’s son out of the state and had no plans for when he showed up while she was heavily pregnant?! Thank god for Grady!! Who knows what could’ve happened.

Their declarations of love at 90%, lame. So lame. The ex won’t be a problem but what about the son?! What about her inability to give him a chance?? They immediate about face ruined it. The book was truly subpar with glimmers of what could’ve been. And then suddenly instead of seeing them happily as a couple, we’re skipping all of the place in the timeline.

I struggled so hard through this book. It's fine but the FMC is so stubborn and kind of rude to the MMC when all he's doing is everything she wants. But does she ask how he's doing? Nope. Don't really care.

This was hands down one of the best books with the pregnancy trope I have ever read! I adored Grady so much!

This man read pregnancy books, went to all her appointments, brought her care packages and so much more!

I loved that Scottie was also a mom of a teenager. It added a depth to the story that I really enjoyed!

And of course, the childhood friends to lovers trope done with the pregnancy trope was top tier!

And don’t even get me started on the friendships and found family feel of this book! I loved it so much!

This was an “it’s always been you”, “he fell first”, “he fell harder”, “he’d do anything for her” kind of story.

💡Before Scottie walked back into his life Grady wasn’t interested in dating, hook-ups, or any sort of romantic entanglements. And as a retired pitcher with a World Series win and a respected business owner, his small town just didn’t get it.
Tbh, both characters struggled with the things happening in their lives and I’m a little disappointed none of them sought out therapy. However, I loved the way their family, friends, and the town rallied around them. Many aspects of this book were a reminder of why living in a small town is beneficial for privileged white people with good hearts. I’d be really interested to see how this little town handles diversity though.
Oh, and the smut was really fun.

🎙️ #hearmeout if it’s not duet narration and Samantha Brentmore is on the job then we should just let her do the whole thing. I’ve liked Sebastian’s work on many audiobooks, but Sam’s a freaking queen. And having two different voices for the same character is a confusing quagmire of sensory overload.

I ended up downloading this puppy from KU and reading Grady’s chapters then listening to Samantha narrate the FMCs. Sebastian was okay, but I’m sick as a dog and struggled with the different voices for the same characters was beyond me.

✨Note✨ Interconnected standalone

“You—you can’t kiss me again, Grady.”
I scoff. “If you think I’m done kissing you, you’ve got another thing coming, babe.”
“I’m serious.”
I lean forward so she can see straight into my eyes when I say, “So am I.”

Dual Narration

This series will hands down be one of my favorite series ever! Someone You Deserve was one of my favorite single mom stories that had me falling in love with that trope, and this just reaffirms how much I love it!! Harlow writes beautiful and emotional stories with characters that have so much depth! This is why she’s one of my favorites 🥹

Scottie and Grady being best friends in high school, and finding their way back to each other was everything!! Scottie getting pregnant during their hook up, and her son breaking into his garage — all of this just had me giggling so hard!

I loved how Teddy was patient with Scottie, and how his relationship with her son grew 🥹 Grady may be grumpy, but he was such a teddy bear that I just wanted to hug over and over! He was perfect for Scottie, and let’s just say it was HOT when they were together 🤭🤭

And the audio!! Omg, not only were these narrators amazing in their roles, but when they did the other characters too I was speechless — it was just so good! And Sebastian with some of those lines?? man I was sweating 🥵🥵

I cannot wait for more!! Harlow just keeps blowing me away with this series 🫶🏼

ARC Review - Sometimes You Fall by Harlow James
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.75
🌶️🌶️.5

I was looking foward to this story since the end of Someone You Deserve and Harlow James delivered on all fronts. Grady and Scottie’s story caught my heart from start to finish. I was completely invested in their story and it was an easy read. There was plot, connection, chemistry and that cozy feeling that comes from small town romances.

Grady was the sweetest grump you’ll meet until he reunites with the one that got away, Scottie, on a chance encounter. When they meet again after an unfortunate incident involving Scottie’s son—Chase, everything changes. From there, you get to see Grady grow into his own after his MLB career and finding his purpose. That man was thoughtful, considerate and most of all, present. He put in the work, day in and day out, to show Scottie and Chase what they deserve. He’s definitely top tier book husband material!

I was in awe of Scottie’s strength when it came to leaving her excess baggage behind. Starting over is never easy, let alone with a teenager.

I absolutely love that you get to see glimpses of the other couples lives after their book. It all flows so well together.

I highly recommend this book if you enjoy small town romance that bring all the feels.

I would like to thank Harlow James and The Author Agency for the opportunity to read and review Sometimes You Fall.

𝐒𝐜𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐞 and Grady, once high school friends who supported each other in their college and sports endeavors, drifted apart only to reunite 17 years later at a bar. The sparks flew as they reconnected and spent a night together, resulting in an unexpected pregnancy.

𝐍𝐨𝐰 back in her hometown, Scottie is determined to make better choices than in her past. She had married young to someone who didn't value her or her son. With her son now a teenager, things seem to be looking up. However, the news of her pregnancy leaves her uncertain about trusting or loving Grady the way he deserves.

𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐲 steps up as a caring and responsible partner from the beginning, eager to be involved in every step of the pregnancy. A special connection forms between them, and despite initial doubts, their love grows into something beautiful and genuine.

𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐚 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐦𝐨𝐨𝐫 and 𝐒𝐞𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐘𝐨𝐫𝐤,𝐬 dual narration was exceptional, capturing the emotions and depth of the story flawlessly.

EASILY one of the most well written pregnancy tropes I have read!

Grady & Scottie were childhood best friends but grew apart once college came and Grady went to play in the MLB. Scottie just cut off all contact with Grady and left him with no explanation as to why.

Fast forward a couple years later & they see each other for the first time again.. and give into the shared sexual tension..

I won’t dive into too many details so you can read it yourself and enjoy all of the bumps (pun intended) in this stories road.. but KNOW Grady is #DADDY and I need him in real life.

Grady is a MAN! 🥵 He proves himself to Scottie so she knows he is NOTHING like her dead-beat ex who didn’t take care of her and their 14 year old son.

I think so many women can relate to Scottie and the adversities of leaving a toxic unhealthy relationship to make sure your child has a better life.

Grady & Scottie will melt your heart, I’m sure of it. 🫶🏻

4.5⭐️ The moment I saw the tropes, I KNEW I had to read this one.

📚 Single mom
📚 Accidental pregnancy
📚 Small-town vibes
📚 Friends-to-lovers
📚 Second chance romance
📚 The one that got away
📚 Slow burn
📚 Meddling family

Grady and Scottie were best friends until college. Years later, they reconnect for one night during a visit, but Scottie slips out before morning and leaves town. A few weeks later, she’s moving back determined to make a better life for her teen son - to find out she’s pregnant as soon as she gets to town.

Grady? SWOON. 🥰 He’s a total cinnamon roll—attentive, understanding, and absolutely in love with Scottie. But Scottie? After everything she’s been through in her first marriage, her walls are UP and she was difficult at times. But watching Grady slowly break through was worth it.

This book had it all…emotion, warmth, spice, and humor. And let me tell you, Scottie’s pregnancy hormones combined with cravings and her sassy, unfiltered grandmother had me cackling!

I could go on, but I don’t want to spoil the good stuff.

This is part of an interconnected series but can be read as a standalone.

I love being back to Carrington Cove!

Grady and Scottie were high school best friends who lost touch when their paths took different turns. But now Scottie is back to Carrington Cove, where Grady, a former professional baseball player is now a mechanic. And she's back with her teenage son. Their reunion is explosive, they end up sending the night together and now... Scottie is expecting.

I love these two together! I love that Scottie's son and Grady's relationship is not sunshine and roses and they Grady has to earn his trust. I love the tension between these two, navigating their future as coparents and their feelings. Grady us all in from the start and the way he earns Scottie's trust... *swoon*

I also love that we get lots of news from our other couples and I can't wait to be back here for more!

*This is an ARC review

This book was soooo good! The combination of childhood friends to lovers, accidental pregnancy, second chance and single mom tropes was perfect. I adored both main characters, but Grady (if we don't talk about Gigi because that woman is the funiest, I loved her) completely stole my heart. He's caring, amazing, and just well... the best! The emotional moments were beautifully written and really resonated with me, adding so much depth to the story. To top it all off, the narrator did an incredible job bringing the story to life. Highly recommend!

High school friends become lovers years later after running into each other in their home town and I was there for all of it. Grady is a retired baseball player who is now a mechanic in his home town. Scotland returns home and she and Grady have a scorching night together. She ghosts Grady because she just had trust issues but it doesn’t last because she moves home with her teenaged son. Scotland gets pregnant from her hot night with Grady and now they have to figure out their new normal. Grady wants Scotland but she is afraid. Grady has to show her that he is not the man her ex husband was and help heal the scars from her first marriage. At the same time, he’s showing her son how a real man treats his family. Beautiful book.

Not that I’m surprised with the trope line up; childhood friends to lovers, single mom, second chance, accidental pregnancy and a grumpy, but swoony MMC...I mean hard to go wrong with those imo. Add in the fact that the narrators did a fantastic job amplifying the chemistry between Grady and Scottie. I also really loved that we got to see more from the previous couples in the series.

It had potential but it felt like we kept harping on Scottie not being ready to be in a relationship. Mam, you were feeling quite flirty when you first saw him after all those years, enough to get pregnant. Would have loved to hear more about Chase and Grady’s relationship. Some of the big moments felt soooooo rushed and fell flat. Like the ex scene, could have been more. They hardly told chase he’d never see his dad again lol and he didnt seem to care. Can Chase hold his baby sister for god sakes? Let them have a sweet moment.

Grady & Scottie were everything I hoped for! From their friendship to their love story, they melted my heart, I loved EVERYTHING Harlow James wrote for this couple, especially the storyline that both main characters have with Chase and the updates that the author gave us about the previous characters in the series.

Grady is a character that stole my heart from the first book, and since then I've been crossing my fingers that Harlow would give us his book, so I couldn't be happier. Grady is a former professional baseball player who was forced to return to his hometown due to an injury, because of that, he experienced very complicated years, but he found his refuge in his love for car restoration and is currently the mechanic of Carrington Cove. Our hero is Astrid's older brother (the heroine from the previous book) and I LOVED that the author gave us so many moments between these two that made me love the beautiful relationship they have, how much they love and support each other, I also really enjoyed Grady's friendship with Penn, Parker & Dallas, how he found a way to have baseball in his life again and his flirtatious, loving and protective personality.

Scottie is a woman who has had to make difficult decisions throughout her life, she was a softball player and aspired to make it to the national team, but when she was about to fulfill her dream she found out she was pregnant and that changed her life forever. When Sometimes You Fall begins, Scottie is divorced, Chase is 14 and she decides that the best thing to do is return to Carrington Cove to start over. Scottie has a very unique and funny sense of humor, she is a very direct woman, who says what she thinks, feels and wants, and a dedicated, loving mother who always tries to give her son the best education. Scottie also has many barriers around her to avoid making the same mistakes of the past, which makes it much more complicated for her to accept Grady's feelings, even when she finds out that they are bothgoing to be parents.

I have to say that, until before the end of Someone You Deserve I wanted Grady to be Hazel's love interest, but when the book ended and Harlow James gave us a glimpse of his history with Scottie I got very excited. I LOVED the prologue with which the author showed us that strong and special connection that Grady & Scottie always had, especially how he trusted her so much to tell her his feelings, insecurities and fears regarding the possibility of reaching the MLB, also thanks to that prologue my heart broke even more when Scottie suddenly disappeared from his life. The reunion also gave me everything I expected from this story: I loved that they resumed their friendship where it left off years ago, BUT that they also confronted their feelings from the past and that attraction that is more than obvious due to the constant flirting between them. Obviously, that night ends in a pregnancy that neither of them expected, Grady decides that he is going to fight to earn Scottie & Chase's trust and in the process the author gave me the most touching moments between Grady and this teenager in which he constantly sees himself reflected, I also love how much Grady gets involved in Scottie's pregnancy, in making her happy and in always letting her know how much he cares.

I have been waiting for Grady's book since the minute I finished Someone You Deserve (Book #2). And Grady delivered in sooooo many ways!

I had the absolute PLEASURE of getting this book as an eARC and an ALC, and I loved every single minute of it. I tandem read most of the book, reading only a few chapters with my eyeballs only. And honestly no matter how you read this book, you are going to absolutely love it.

Grady & Scottie were high school best friends, they both went their separate ways both trying to chase their dreams of being pro athletes. Grady, baseball and Scottie, softball. Grady had a crush on Scottie in high school, but held back for a number of reasons. After losing touch in college, they ironically run into each other on a night out. One thing leads to another and their friendship goes to a whole other level. After Scottie decides to return to Carrington Cove, to raise her teenage son where she grew up all those years ago, she learns that one reckless, but unforgettable night with Grady will turn into 18 more years (at least) of seeing Grady, because she's pregnant....

Grady and Scottie's chemistry was on FIRE from page one. I have never read a story and had a gut feeling from the very beginning that these two belonged together. The way Grady took to Scottie's son, Chase, and mentored him in more ways than one was amazing. Harlow took accidental pregnancy to a whole new level. Also the SPICE in this book was ah-mazing. Harlow wasted no time, and it popped off in chapter 3. And it was hottt.....be warned my friends 🤣

As for Samantha Brentmoor & Sebastian York, BRAVO!! You two gave these characters so much life, and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this whole story through your voices.

A HUGE thank you to Harlow for letting me get lost in this amazing story in advanced. Also a HUGE thank you to The Author Agency for giving me the opportunity to listen to the narrators bring Grady & Scottie to life.

I fell in love with Carrington Cove at the beginning of the series, and each visit is getting better and better. Scottie and Grady are special characters, and their story is complex.

As elite athletes, Scottie and Grady are each other's best friends and biggest supporters. They understood what the other was going through, and even though they were separated by distance, they stayed in touch until she disconnected her number.

Life throws curveballs; things happen for a reason. As Grady and Scottie cross paths years later, the friends fill in the time lost.

I love the path these two walk, Scottie is strong and overcomes the speed bumps thrown at her. Grady has his own fears he must face, a dream lost, and his place in baseball. Both come out the other side stronger.

Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.
