this is technically a prequel but neena deems it as 1.5 as the recommended reading order goes:
the king’s weapon
the heir’s bargain
the crown’s shadow
BUT you can start with this book if you love knowing the backstory of some of the main characters before getting into the main story. fair warning - neena deems this route as the “high highs, low lows” and as I call it, “do you want to sob now or later?”
this fantasy x romance reads hits all my favorite tropes:

I loved fynn back in the king’s weapon and I fell even more in love with him in this book. his personality shines through the pages and I love the deeper connection I feel after reading his back story

ARC Review:
First off, I knew this book would be a difficult read (because iykyk…) but I am so happy that I read it.
Getting to see the beginning of Fynn and Dani’s relationship was a real treat! It was everything Neena promised, and it was delivered brilliantly. While this didn’t have the angst, mystery, plot, or intensity as her other two main books in the series, it was still a nice .5 read.
I have never been one for the friends to lover trope, and while I knew the end result of their fake courtship (👑💍), I still found myself rooting for their love story and for them to stop being so blind. This was able to satisfy my starvation of her next book for the time being…but book 3 will hopefully be to us coming soon! 🤞🏻

Listen I love this series and this was an incredible addition with the background of Fynn and Dani’s story (😭). It was a beautiful mix of a romance story and fantasy intertwined into the world and helped me really appreciate the characters in the main story of The Kings Weapon - I love the way Neena writes!! Would definitely recommend.

The Heir's Bargain by Neena Laskowski is a friends to lovers romantasy that tells the story of the fmc Dani & the mmc Fynn's love story. Two best friends one a soldier,and the other a prince overcome many obstacles,and prove that love will always find a way.
The friends to lovers trope is portrayed in a beautiful way,and never once felt rushed. There's also plenty of romantic moments with stolen glances,and a lot of banter.
The world building is very detailed with many different scenes that are full of stunning backgrounds. Readers get to experience the thrill of adventure while also seeing the magnificent court intrigue in the castle.
The messages,and themes throughout the book are powerful ones that stays with readers long after they finish the story. Women taking care of business is a very strong message,and I appreciated seeing it.👏
There's a lot of moments where the banter is bantering especially that one ballroom scene.✨️ Dani & Fynn both support each other while also staying true to who they are no matter what.
Fans of the friends to lovers trope should definitely add this to their tbr.This is also a story about learning to never doubt your worth because you are,and always will be enough. 👑

REVIEW
THE BOOK
IT WAS SOO AMAZING. It made me laugh, Cry, and literally sob.
Dani is a soldier despite her family being heads of the military. She wants to prove that she deserves the promotion and works equally hard. I am soo impressed by her, like her hard work and motivation. And then she has her friends there. I love Sylvia and Moris; they are such good friends to her and of course, there are Terin and Graeson too. And that scene where Rosaline and Dani have kind of like showdown that was 🔥🔥🔥. In my head, I was literally screaming “GO DANIIII”.
Fynn, our crown prince. He is funny, brave and Soo much charming. He was a little bit Whorish 🤣before Dani. He loves his family. Like before anyone else. It literally breaks my heart when he doubts himself. Queen Esmeray is such a good mother who understands her son and is proud of both of her sons. Now, my favorite scene is the Summer solstice. Like literally the whole ball, the night 😉,The next morning everything
Their chemistry Like Dani and Fynn complement each other well. They were tailormade for each other (Literally) but soo oblivious. I just felt like I should knock their heads together and make them see lol. I have not read the other books but I will surely after it for one so I can read more of Dani and Fynn and second I want to know more about what happens.
THE WRITING STYLE
I have not read the other 2 books in the series but I didn’t feel for one second that I made a mistake not reading the other books first. (I did read Assassin’s Blade first, so it’s the same thing here). The writing was soo good like the Pace, The Character development and all. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. The chemistry between Dani and Fynn was soo enchanting. I was squealing after every scene I enjoyed this book a lot. Like we can see them going from friends to lovers and loved every second of it.
CONCLUSION
Totally recommended for readers who love fantasy books with some spice and a whole lot of chemistry.

I'm not usually a fan of reading books out of order, but I took a chance on this being my first read from Neena, and gosh am I so happy I did - this book is a wonderful standalone that now has me running to read The King's Weapon. I was easily able to get into the story and navigate around the characters and their lives.
Neena's world building is just right and she captures imagery so well that I was really able to visualize Dani's numerous outbursts into Fynn's day to day life (the one with the dress and the throwing knife *chef's kiss*) and absolutely fell in love with their extremely dynamic relationship! I'm a huge fan of soul mates/fated mates and seeing Fynn hold onto that was so heartwarming and just instantly made me swoon - PLUS those lushious chestnut curls *dying*
Told from both Dani and Fynn's POVs, this book has the perfect balance of romantasy with so much packed in that has you turning each page and savouring the playful banter between these 2 best friends and following their journey from a "pretend" courtship to something truly beautiful. My heart skipped a few beats, along with all the blushes and giggles along the way with some of Fynn's charming dialogue.
1000% recommend this and so thankful to Neena for sending me an ARC of this - this one will be definitely be one I treasure! I'm a bit scared to read TKW now but that is my next read now! :)

This book is very well written about our two most beloved characters from Neena Lasowksi’s books. Fynn and Dani have a great friendship, one that unintentionally blossoms into more. Reading this story makes it all the more sad when we know what’s in store for him. To lose a souls born in their world can be devastating and painful. To love the love of your life is one thing but to lose your soul bond? The pain must be unimaginable. I love Neena Lasowski’s writing, I find it very smooth and and easy to read. I got through this book in a few days, it’s very easy to read her books and easily devour thirty to forty pages at a time if not more. Loved this series and can’t wait for the fourth and final book to come out.

Wow just wow what a beautiful bittersweet story. I kinda dreaded reading this knowing I knew the ultimate outcome and knew that reading this would only make it worse but I am so happy I did. This book was a wonderfully funny and spicy and heartfelt story. The fights are so beautifully orchestrated with blade flying and the scene playing so vividly in your head. Neena does a fantastic job of painting a picture with her beautiful use of imagery. Also THE SPICE my god the spice. Fynn is a flirt through and through and his filthy mouth even better in this book!
I think that this book should be read after the kings weapon similar to Assassin’s blade so you get the full experience of loving the characters.

When her mother starts forcing her to find a suitor Dani’s life gets more complicated, she doesn’t want to court anyone while her promotion in the military is so close. Fynn now the crown prince feels the weight of the kingdom as his mother also starts to push him to settle down. When one exhausting evening leads to these two striking a bargain fake a courtship to get their mothers off their backs allowing Fynn to keep his lax lifestyle and Dani to get her promotion.

✮ ✮ ✮ ✮ ✮ - Incredible!! Can’t stop thinking about it, has consumed my thoughts…
Okay hear me out, I had a hard time getting into this book in the beginning. It seemed kinda slow going but around Chapter 6 was when I found it started to pick up. I will say I have not read the first book in this series, that may have bias over my review.
Anyways! I absolutely fell in love with this book, the characters, the fake lovers to lovers, childhood best friends, soul bonds, settings, I WAS HOOKED. I found the banter and playfulness between characters really enjoyable! It was interesting to see how each of their powers reacted against one another, whether positive or negative.
I found the aspect of Dani’s life refreshing from the normal Prince drama stuff you get from fantasy books. A strong, fiercely independent FMC who falls in love with a golden retriever who can’t live without her.

Dying over here. So, soon I’ll be writing this from the afterlife. This is the first I’ve read from Neena, and THB is a prequel, but I felt like it was a perfect standalone as well. I was able to navigate the world and characters with ease.
THB follows 2 POVs: Dani, a young woman working her way up through the military, and her childhood best friend, Fynn, the Crown Prince. This courtship of convenience, was beautifully executed to me. I rooted for the characters. I got frustrated for and with the characters. I pined with the characters. I celebrated with the characters. The second chance romances and childhood friends to lovers always gets me because I’ve lived it. This one did not disappoint me in any way.
You’ll find one bed, reverse grumpy x sunshine, strong FMCs, golden retriever MMC, unique magics, soul bonds, slow burn, low stakes, rom/com esque, forced proximity, second chance, fake dating, mild language, spice 2/5, and an ending that brings joy all wrapped within these pages. I struggled to put this down and I think you will too.

Oh man, I loved this book. I read it after book 1, The King's Weapon, and it got me in my feelings. Fynn is such a lovable sunshine-y pest, and Dani is so stubborn and grumpy. There were so many sweet giggly moments that I adored, and the spicy moments were great, too! Fynn is the MMC that crawls for her, and I *apparently* LOVE that. Dani being the grumpy half of this trope was a nice change of pace since I'm used to the MMCs being the grumpy ones.
This book truly sets readers up for the events of book 1, but you don't have to read it first! Read it wherever you'd like in the series, but be prepared for feelings regardless. Be prepared to be mad at Neena (IYKYK). 🫣

This was such a great book!! I had a hard time putting it down, and now I can’t stop thinking about it 💜
We follow Dani, our fierce soldier, who is stubborn and independent, and the bargain she has made with Fynn, her childhood best friend and Crown Prince.
I love the banter between Dani and Fynn! The way Fynn speaks about Dani is heart warming 🫶🏻 And don’t get me started on the fake courtship, it is well executed and I found myself giggling multiple times!

It has dual POV, fake dating, found family, slow burn, one bed, grumpy vs. sunshine. Along with a unique magic system, ballrooms and taverns ✨💜

The Heirs Bargain release date has been circled and highlighted in my calendar for a hot minute, so when I was selected to arc read this prequel, I was honored! Of Fire and Lies is one of my favorite underrated series. The Heirs Bargain can be read before or after either of the two in the series, however I personally suggest reading after The Kings Weapon. While Kallie’s story is still my favorite, The Heirs Bargain is a sweet and slightly spicy prequel of sorts following Dani and Flynn’s story. Neena has a way of making you fall in love with her complex and well-rounded characters. Her writing always has you wondering what’s going to happen next. I can’t wait to see what Neena does next with this series!

In a message to Neena early on in my reading, I said it felt like Bridgerton + Pride and Prejudice + Little Women + a fresh fantasy world of its own and I stand by this! Stayed up until midnight (v late for me) reading because I couldn't get enough and now I'm sad that it's over.
Packed full with so many of my favorite tropes but still felt fun and new. <3

This great book written by this great author is part of the background information that is necessary but not crucial to the story's plot, to date.
In my humble opinion, it is a gift from the author that one could qualify as the cherry on the sunday.
In fact, it is the story of Dani and the heir to the throne Finn before Khali was introduced in the picture. Romantic, it pictures the side of a monarchy that people choose to believe but that is only based on traditions and nothing concrete.
It is funny at times and instructional on a possible relationship between a soldier born out of a family of soldiers who chose the path to follow in their footsteps and a son of a king who's path was decided from his conception. However impossible for certain persons in their entourage, they will prove that a soul mate bond is stronger than anything. I recommend the book and rate it 5 Stars.

I loved seeing Dani and Fynn
and their love story.
You truly get to know
and connect with the characters.
I enjoyed this story so much
and I am so excited to see what
else Neena has to offer with this
series.
Dani only has one thing on her
mind. Rise up in the ranks for the
military but when she does not get
promoted she’s devastated.
She is more devastated to find out
that it was because she did not
have anything outside of the
military like a husband or family.
Fynn is the appointed heir for the
kingdom but the queen has made
it clear that he needs someone to
court with. The only thing others
want from him is the crown title.
His known past of breaking girls
hearts does not help the situation.
But when two friends need the same thing that only means that they have to make a bargain. How could that go wrong?

I literally CANNOT with this book. I read the entire thing in one sitting because it is SO good and captivating ✨
One thing Neena does SO well is building relationships between characters, and Dani & Fynn’s relationship is my absolute fav.
Plus, fake dating??? Um YES. Also, I’m always impartial first towards enemies to lovers, but my heart is SCREAMING for this friends to lovers story (and even made me drop a tear or two while reading 😭🩷).
This is one of those books where I actually can’t stop thinking about it after finishing because it was THAT AMAZING.

So this book actually broke me. I laughed, I cried, I cried some more, then I laughed. Lots and lots of blushing. Fynn will forever hold my heart and though I know how his story ends, I love that I got to know his beginning.
Dani and Fynn are such compelling characters and I was happy to get a deeper dive into the friendships with Moris and Sylvia. The look inside of the relationship between Fynn and Terin was definitely interesting to explore. It really put things into perspective for the later books.
This prequel did an excellent job of looping into the larger plot points in the rest of the series and I seriously can't wait for more. Here's to me determined to stay delusional and hope that Fynn will miraculously be brought back.

Wow. This book was amazing! I tore through this in a single day, which very rarely happens for me but I could not put this down. The fake dating was hilarious, so much so I was laughing out loud for the majority of it and smiling until my cheeks hurt.
Fynn and Dani were the sweetest couple, I loved their banter and how their relationship grew as the book progressed. There was so many sweet moments which made me fall in love with them even more than I already did.
Highly, highly recommend. Definitely want more stories from these two but this has became one of my favourite reads of 2024 so far

Dani and Fynn are childhood best friends. Fynn is the Crown Prince in need of a relationship to keep his mother (the Queen) off his back. Dani a military warrior who is working her butt off for a promotion but is denied due to lack personal relationships.
Fynn comes up with a perfect solution “a faux courtship” for a few months so he gets peace from his mother and Dani gets the promotion. What could possibly go wrong? They’re best friends and nothing more right? Or so they think.
I really enjoyed this lighthearted fantasy romance. Fynn and Dani were lovely characters and they witty banter was fantastic. Friends to lovers always wins my heart.

I completely devoured this book! The Heir's Bargain is a romantic fantasy featuring a swoon-worthy friends-to-lovers trope between a soldier and a future king. When Fynn and Dani are nagged nonstop about getting married, they make a bargain that appears straightforward at first but soon becomes complicated.
I can't recommend this book enough! It was an absolute delight to read, and I'm going to recommend it to everyone I know. I'm usually more drawn to enemies-to-lovers tropes, but this friends-to-lovers story stole my heart. It was an incredibly satisfying and enjoyable read, and I loved every moment of it!!!

This is a prequel (1.5)? To “The Kings Weapon” but I read it out of order and started with this one.. and I’m glad I did! I couldn’t put this book down once I started. Dani is a fierce soldier with a mind of her own. Fynn is the charming, lovable prince that is easy to fall for. Reading their journey reminded me of Bridgerton meets fantasy. I can’t wait to dive into the rest of the series.. like right now.

The story was nothing extraordinary but what I enjoyed was the writing.
My favourite thing about the book was Fynn being a clueless dumbass about Dani. The book started off a little slow but then I consumed it whole.
This would've been a 4 star but I just felt that this book was missing something. Like maybe more angst from Fynn and Dani?
Nonetheless I had fun reading this book!
If you love golden retriever bf × grumpy black cat definitely check it out.

I have already read the first two books and reading this one after those felt right. I loved learning about Fynn and Dani after they were already Fynn and Dani. I love this world Neena has created. It’s not over fantasized so I feel more connection with the world and characters. Friends to lovers is always a feel good story. I am beyond excited for the third book and will literally buy any books in the future Neena releases. I randomly came across her TikTok and I most often bookmark and move on but I am so glad I didn’t with Of Fire and Lies.

I absolutely loved this book. The friends to lovers plot is so amazing. Reading Fynn and Dani’s story was one of the best friends to lovers plot I have read. Fynn’s comments, whether inappropriate or funny, throughout the book make it very entertaining. Dani is such a strong leader and it is nice to see her personal life grow throughout the book with Fynn. It truly is a masterpiece and I did not want to put this book down. It was such a cute read and is truly heartwarming.

This was such a sweet story of Dani and Fynn! My two favorite tropes of telepathy (speaking into one another’s minds or reading others thoughts) and soul bonds as Neena calls it in this book or fated mates in others. She did such a good job with both and I truly enjoyed my time reading this. The one and only thing I suggest is to use some other words in place of countenance. That’s all! The rest was lovely! 🥰

As always, I love Neena's writing and I especially love the direction she went with this book. It allowed readers to see how the relationship between Fynn and Dani developed before everything that happens in the other books in this series as this takes place before them. So the story is a lot more romance based rather than fantasy, which isn't a bad thing! I love a good fake dating slow burn.
I love books like this where you can better understand the characters through their backstory.

I have been lucky enough to receive ARCs of all of Neena’s books so far and this one has now jumped to my favorite! Without spoilers Dani and Fynn’s love story is full of everything you could ever want. Best Friends to Lovers, Fake Dating, One Bed tropes all included and all loved. The banter between the two of them is just incredible. If you’ve read any of this series of books you HAVE to go read The Heir’s Bargain! You’ll love everything about Fynn and Dani!
