A twisty mystery set in Elizabethan England! Perfect for fans of Conn Iggulden, Robyn Young, Alison Weir and Anthony Riches.
Is a curse plaguing Nottinghamshire…?
Nottingham, England, 1596
A routine hanging at Gallows Hill is disrupted when a wild woman begins screaming a curse on the execution site, calling down nightly visitations from the undead to claim the souls of the living.
County Bailiff Edward Mountsorrel attempts to pursue her, but she vanishes into thin air.
Nightly thereafter, Gallows Hill is the scene of ghastly happenings that Edward is ordered to investigate. Rumours of witchcraft infiltrate the county and the bailiff is sent to arrest a local woman, suspected of devilry.
Edward finds her and realises she is merely a wise woman with ancient knowledge of herbs and medicine and with no ill intent. He decides to hide her to keep her safe from those calling for blood.
But his efforts are complicated by the arrival of a professional witch-hunter from Scotland, who is scouring the length and breadth of England in a blood-thirsty mission to destroy any woman, man or child found guilty of sorcery.
As mass hysteria and prejudice threaten to engulf the country, can Edward bring justice to his county, while still keeping his morals intact? Or will innocent women be thrown to the wolves…?
The Clamorous Dead is the fourth historical thriller in the Bailiff Mountsorrel Tudor Mystery Series – private investigation crime novels set during the reign of Elizabeth I and beyond.

David was born in post-war Nottingham, and educated at Nottingham High School. After obtaining a Law degree he became a career-long criminal law practitioner and academic, emigrating in 1989 to Australia, where he still lives.
Combining his two great loves of History and the English language he began writing historical novels as an escape from the realities of life in the criminal law, but did not begin to publish them until close to fulltime retirement, when digital publishing offered a viable alternative to literary agencies, print publishers and rejection slips.
Now blessed with all the time in the world, his former hobby has become a fulltime occupation as he enjoys life in rural New South Wales with his wife, sons and grandchildren to keep him firmly grounded in the reality of the contemporary world.
The only thing better than finding a series you enjoy is when the next book is released and it's even better than you anticipated! The Clamorous Dead provides the reader with several mysteries to solve as well as a window into the witch hysteria of 17th-century Scotland and England. This 4th book brought some major changes in the lives of our two favorite bailiffs of Nottingham and set the stage for the end of Elizabeth I's reign. (Arabella Stuart & Bess of Hardwick make an appearance in this one.) As always, I admire the author's extensive research & plethora of Tudor cultural tidbits. I highly recommend this series and will be sad for it to end.
I am enjoying this series, not least because its set in my birth town of Nottingham, so I can visualise the places. This story involves threats of witchcraft towards the end of Elizabeth I's reign. Bailiff Edward is facing his sheriff Byron determined to route out witches who threaten the succession, as well as unnatural occurrences taking place at Gallows Hill following a hanging, which are terrifying the local population.
The story flows well, is well researched (apart from a couple of anachronisms) and is a very enjoyablee read with likeable characters. I'm enjoying the series very much.
Another grand book in the series. What might cause more mayhem in Elizabethan England than witches striking fear in this non Catholic country? Our erstwhile constables have very different masters who approach the subject very differently.
This is the fourth book in the series and weaves a good storyline. The main characters,Edward and Francis work well together and the book goes along at a good steady pace. Enjoy!
The idea to make England a bastion of witches is really strange to me. But when you see people actually trying to do it, it really becomes beyond belief. Good thing some people don't believe in witches!
1596 Nottingham. During a hanging a woman curses the area of Gallows Hill and soon noises and spectres are seen. But what of the local woman deemed to be a witch, and why have these activities just now surfacing. (Edward's wife is somewhat of a harridan) An entertaining historical mystery
