As a Sergeant in the Army I'm used to doing whatever needs to be done with no whining.

Yeah, I'm kind of a badass.

Until one injury changes everything.

Now I'm haunted by the memories and broken in mind and body.

I'm not used to admitting when I need help but I won’t qualify for the Special Forces unless I do something drastic.

Matt Simmons injured in action is not healing from his injury. His sister Mara is concerned and persuades him to make an appointment with a physical therapist. Who just happens to be their former babysitter Penny Lewis.

After a rocky start their patient, therapist relationship gets on track. But the sexual tension and chemistry between them burns bright. But Penny is the daughter of a military man, and has vowed never to get mixed up with a guy in the forces. All that constant moving around is not for her. She wants a quiet life living in the one place putting down roots. But Matt is turning out to be very irresistible.

First read for me by this author, and I liked this book a lot. Yes it's part of a series, and I have not read any of the other books. But I found I picked up who was who very quickly. I liked Matt he oozed sex appeal, Penny was a no nonsense woman, but with a soft centre. I would recommend this to all of you who love your romantic reads.

My rating: 2.5 of 5 ⭐

After growing up with a dad in the military, Penelope Lewis is certain of one thing; she will never date a military man. Happy with her predictable life as a physical therapist, settled in one location and dating a stable and predictable man, she thinks she has everything worked out. That is, until an old familiar name pops up, someone she used to baby-sit.......

Hounded by his twin sister, Matt Simmons finally consents to getting some more therapy for his shoulder. His window of opportunity to be declared healthy enough for the Army Rangers training is rapidly closing, and the pain in his shoulder is only getting worse. He didn't really believe anyone could help him, he had done just about everything after they repaired his shoulder, when he returned to the US injured.

After an initial difficult start, Matt and Penny quickly settle into a therapy routine. Matt would love to expand their interactions, but although Penny is very attracted to him, she has quite a few objection to them being anything more than friends. Figuring that he will take what he can, for now, Matt agrees to play the friend role, but every opportunity he lets it be known that that his interest goes well beyond friendship.

Penny discovers that Matt is a hard man to resist, especially as she gets to know him better. And once the Alexander clan gets a hold of her, there is no stopping the runaway train......

*****

I was excited about the promise of this book, the outline seemed interesting. I just don't know if I got what I expected out of it.

I enjoyed the beginning, there was quite a bit of fire and intensity. A hint of PTSD, which unfortunately remained very vague. Perhaps that's what it was.....everything seemed to remain fairly superficial. Matt's issues with his sister and best friend's relationship really never was or gets resolved, his hang ups from child hood and his upbringing are skimmed over, even though they are brought forward as explanation, but then are just left alone. There are entire periods of time that go by, where not a lot happens, or so it seems, and it slows the pace of the book down and feels like unimportant information when there is so much in the story that could be explored.

Penny has her own issues. She talks of sisters that we never get to see or hear of except in passing, even though months go by. Penny a first is reluctant to even associate with Matt and then ends up throwing her entire life as she knows it out the window, to sit beside him to support him, while she calmly 'lets things happen'. From everything I learned of her in the first half of the book, it seems so incompatible with the person that is portrayed in the latter part of the book.

All in all, it makes this an ok romantic read, as long as the expectations remain superficial and in terms of sex, you don't expect the usual M. Malone heat, because most of the time it is behind closed doors and lukewarm at best.

✨A light romantic read.✨

My Review:
This was a fun book to read. Matt dislocated his shoulder in the warzone, dragging his buddy to safety. It's been many months (maybe even a year??) since it happened, but it's just not healing. In fact, it's getting a lot worse. Faced with the deadline of having to be fit so he can return to active duty, Penny is his last hope. He still hopes to qualify for the special forces.

Penny is a physical therapist who isn't afraid to create new techniques and experiment to get her patients healed, but she fully believes that the patient has to work too. When Matt comes in with a lousy, angry attitude, she tells him to forget it. But they finally work it out so that they can work together, but Matt wants more. Penny grew up with a military father. Even if Matt weren't a patient, he wouldn't have a chance with her...but as their friendship develops, it becomes obvious that their chemistry is going to be hard to ignore.

This book is a nice, light read. I enjoyed the story of the romance between Matt and Penny especially with his back story. I liked that even though they have this incredible attraction to each other, they truly develop a friendship first. They are just flat-out perfectly compatible. It was pretty darn hot too, because honestly, their chemistry is combustible.

I also really loved getting to see all the Alexander clan and where they are now. My one big complaint is that we never got to find out what was in Elliot's closet (Matt moves into Eli's house in this book and makes a surprising discovery in the closet, but we were never told what exactly that was...hmmm). I guess we'll find out in the next book, since he's next and I already love the set-up for his story.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

I have been enjoying the Alexander series for the most part. I do wish there was more description of the characters because I enjoy that but the stories have been fairly good. The story of Matt and Penny just didn't do it for me. I felt like it was a very slow read. There was not enough real conflict to explain why they were taking so long to get to the HEA. I found myself more interested in what was going on with secondary, to this story, characters Kaylee and Eli.

This was my least favourite part. I think it was too messy with too much characters. Don’t think I will listen to the next parts.

Super meh. Skimmed a lot. Some parts dragged and were boring. Wasn’t really feeling the chemistry between the characters. Not sure if I even want to continue with the series.

He’s the Man is an M. Malone family saga series about the Alexander’s. There are the loving heads of this family Julia and Mark and they have 4 sons: Bennett, Elliott (Eli), Nicholas (Nick) Married to Raina, Jackson married to Ridley (sister to Raina). Now the boys Jackson was dorm mates at college with Trent Townsend (boyfriend to Mara Simmons), and Matt Simmons (Twin brother to Mara also at college with the boys & Nick).
Now I feel better I have given you all the players so when you start reading the story you have a cheat sheet. Although you can start anywhere in one of these books and it can stand alone. I love all the characters you can get pulled in very easily. At least I can. I might be a push over, I love books a lot. I really want to be in a characters mind and soul right away and with this I am. I am always a sucker for a hunky war hero that is hurting and needs help. Well, this had it all plus a good storyline and cast of characters to support it.
This is a story of Matt Simmons who is trying to get back to active duty as a Specials Forces after an extreme shoulder injury that surgery did not fix. So, after almost a year his twin sister makes him an appointment for a physical therapist and turns out that it is an old babysitter of theirs from their childhood. Really not wanting to go he does and the appointment does not go very well on the first day because of his anger issues over not being back to 100%. Once he sucks it up and makes amends things go a lot better. He then starts to see her in a new light and finds out just how well he likes her as a woman.
She sees him as an attractive man too and not that 9 year old bratty kid. Which makes for a sticky situation for Penny (Penelope) Lewis for she is not that pudgy older teen babysitter anymore. But, somehow right now she feels like that when she sees him for the first time on her exam table without his shirt. This book only gets better from there. Eli also comes in with a little excitement with Kaylee Wilhelm the singer he is hired to protect and a friend of the family that he is beginning to have feelings for. This is a fun fast read. I loved the cover, read the blurb on Amazon, thought I would give it a go. Mistake.

It's the third in what appears to be an ongoing series - which isn't made clear on Amazon- so I ended up reading about characters who were dropped straight into the story without having any idea of who they were. But that was not the real problem.

The writing needed serious editing in a lot of places. There were repetitions, nonsensical phrases, and to be honest, it dragged.

examples:

Scott was well educated, patient, and understanding of her crazy schedule. (and further down on the SAME PAGE I read this - ) She sometimes wondered about why Scott was so understanding of her schedule. DUH

And then there was this:

Ridley stood at the entrance to the nursery the next day, holding a small arrangement of wildflowers. Even though none of the flowers were the same type, somehow the whole bouquet made sense. ROTFL here.. made sense?? A bunch of flowers? Sorry, but that is simply silly.

And this:

'My dad wanted me to go to medical school at first. He couldn't understand why I chose physical therapy specifically. But even though he didn't exactly get it, he was cheering the loudest when I graduated with a doctorate in physical therapy.' Yes, I get it. Physical therapy. No need to labour the point. Please.

Julia was a petite woman. Her head only came to Penny's shoulder. Her age had to be about the same as Penny's own parents, but her light brown skin was remarkably free of lines. That is so wrong on so many levels.. but then Julia - of the light brown line-free skin despite her age asks Penny: 'Would you like to join the prayer circle, honey?'

I ran screaming for the hills at that point.

There were a couple of moments when I was expecting something to happen - the foreshadowing was there, but then the incidents were completely forgotten, as if the author had not bothered to read through or have the book edited.

The story of Matt and Penny.

Hmm, these really are light and fluffy. Matt injured his shoulder dragging a team mate, who later died, to safety. He's had surgery but the injury seems to have got worse not better. He can no longer meet the physical exam to re-enlist. His twin Mara bullies him into seeing an old babysitter, Penny, for physical therapy.

Penny is an army brat and doesn't trust easily after she lost her best friend when her father's job forced them to move.

It's a case of insta-lurve on both sides although Penny tries to keep her distance for professional reasons and also because she has a long-term boyfriend. However, when said boyfriend proposes (in a pretty poor way) she realises he is not the one.

As with all the books I have read so far, the male character is less conflicted than the female. Matt knows he wants Penny and doesn't waver - there is a fun bit where she kicks him out of bed so she can get a good night's sleep and an early start and he stands by the side of the car appreciating what all the previous women felt like when he did the same to them.

The last third/quarter of the book is more of a set up for the fourth book in the series featuring the older Alexander brother Eli and the young mother Kay (Nick 'discovered' her and her group in the first book). I assume that the drama from this book will continue into that book.

I probably liked this this best of the books so far, although it is becoming a family ensemble where all previous characters have to make an appearance - I get the impression that Ridley is the author's favourite character as she appears the most.

I also really dislike the way that some of the characters act in the book. Thinking particularly of something that Ridley does to Eli and Kay which is plain wrong. The characters act like 16 year old children rather than adults.

This was free on Kindle, I picked it up in case I needed a palate cleanser after something heavy. After two really heavy books last week, I wanted fluff and romance - that's exactly what I got with this book.

I'm not familiar with M.Malone as a writer, and I didn't realise that this was part of a series, but I hoped it would be able to stand on its own. It did, for the most part - there were subplots that were unnecessary to the romance (involving pop stars) and characters thrown in there that weren't mentioned or fleshed out at all (just assumed that the reader would be familiar with them). I'm sure fans of the Alexanders Series will enjoy this.

Matt Simmons is a hunk of a man - tall, dark, handsome, and just back from Iraq where he was injured saving a friend. His injury isn't healing properly, so enter formerly "pudgy girl with the glasses" turned curvy bombshell and physical therapist Penny. Penny used to babysit Matt when they were kids, and they begin a relationship.

It's alright - parts of it made me roll my eyes so hard I almost got a headache ("all men are animals", "the pudgy girl with the glasses? No way!"), it was full of clichés, full of generalizations, and Matt was the ultimate Action Man brought to life - but I didn't go into this expecting much, and considering it was free, it wasn't THAT bad.

I'm sure fans of the series will adore this, sadly I'm not among them, but I went into this with both eyes wide open and I've nobody to blame but myself!

I received this ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

A bit of a confession regarding my own stupidity. I meant to read One More Day, the first in The Alexander's series, but pulled up this one by mistake and read it thinking it was the first in the series. I was a little thrown by the casual references to other members of the family and it didn't take me long to realize my mistake. I try to read series in order, but once I had started the book, I didn't want to stop to read two others before I could finish, so I carried on.

After reading this one, I don't think the order is hugely important. I'm finding that series like this, where each book is focused on one set of characters *can* be read out of order, but it would have more impact, especially where secondary character backstories are concerned, if they were read in sequence.

This series reminds me of Jill Shalvis' Lucky Harbour series. Core set of characters, cute romance, predictable plot, happily-ever-after. But unlike, Shalvis, Malone fell short on the humour and the witty dialogue and only teased us with her sexy scenes.

A good, formula romance novel. Perfect for someone who wants to keep the reading light and uncomplicated.

I loved this book, and I love the series. He's the man: The Alexanders, book 3 is part of the Alexanders series. Each book could be a stand alone, but it's better to start with book one. Each book weaves characters and events from previous books into the story line.

I loved how the story touched on the subject of PTSD. Matt the hero of the story was hurt in combat. He lost one of his closest friends. The night mares leaves him waking up in a pool of sweat. Loud noises makes him dive to the ground bringing him back to the nightmare of war. His friends are there for him but is at a loss. Matt hurt his shoulder in combat. He had the surgery, but he is still in pain.

It is Penny that helps him. She is his physical therapist, but turns out to be much more. I loved watching their friendship grow throughout the book and turning into the forever kind of love. This was one of those romance books that just left me smiling after I finished it.

What A Man Indeed.....

I could only in all good consciousness give this read a three star rating, and I have a history of being generous but fair in my ratings. This was an easy story to adapt to, it was in every meaning of the word, just a romance. It had a certain simplicity, however, that almost became boring at times. The idea of family was certainly portrayed, and again almost overdone. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed it but probably would not be considered one of my personal favorites or recommendations.

I enjoyed this book a lot. It was a nice story revolving around family, love, and adjusting to a new life when it doesn't play out how you want. I liked Matt and the man he was, Penny was ok for the most part, but her fear of being spontaneous was tiresome. I am mad I started the 3rd book in the series, but it's all good, I will read more by this author.

You love a good risk. Penelope hard working physical therapist works to get Matt back to health. In this journey walls must come down. Insecurities must be broken. Through it all passion and purpose is revealed.

I Agree 💯...He's the Man

Matthew Simmons twin to Mara Simmons and recently had been on leave from the military because he got hurt 🤕 hauling his military brother from a burning tank, humvee and even though he did everything he could to keep his friend alive, he still died in the end. So his twin, Mara, suggested to him to go this Physical Therapist Penelope aka Penny Lewis in the DC area. Penny use to be the twins babysitter when they were younger. So this is the beginning of the relationship between Dr. Penny Lewis and Seargent Matthew Simmons. I loved this story and every story about this group the Alexanders and Simmons and even Trent Mara's fiance. There's drama and some intrigue and whole lot of family life and love 💙💚🧡❤️. I can't wait to read the final book 📚📖 in this series. Good read 👍, highly recommend this book and the series.

An enjoyable read but not as good as I hoped.
I had reviewed this when I originally got it but my reviews from the back of all books have disappeared so I am reviewing as I read them again.
I am sorry to say this series is not as good as book one promised. I enjoy being with the Alexanders but this just skimmed the surface of how good it could be.
These two characters dance around each other without being honest about what they want from life and where they want to go.
We get vague explanations about what is going on in their lives and why they think like they do but with no real fleshing out of the problems and reasons.
Does Matt have PTSD or not, not clarified. A couple of plot mistakes also annoyed me.

Penny and Matt. Matt needed physical therapy badly even though he would not admit it. His sister Mara has been pestering him about it. She decides to pull the bull by the horns and made him an appointment with a therapist. She used to be his babysitter. When Penny saw Matt her heart went pitter patter even though she has a boyfriend. Matt was pretty rude to her at first. Penny’s friend tried to intervene. So Matt asked Penny to give him another chance. She decided to go ahead and try. As they worked together their feelings started getting in the way. She thought it was inappropriate and Matt did not. Who do you think will win? Will Penny take a risk? Sometimes taking a chance is worth the risk!

I still had issues connecting to the characters, their was repetition in the story and it felt like it was put their to extend the story and make the book longer...however, their was scenes in the story that was well written but not enough to make me want to read another book in this series...I vowed after reading book 1 in the Alexander series which was terrible written not to read another but I gave them another chance and once again I was disappointed as I skimmed the pages to hurry up and finish reading so I can find a new series to read...1 star

Five Star from a bitch mood woman.

I love the Alexanders Series, this book tho didn´t do much for me.
It´s well writen and a great read, but the insta-love and "i´ll do anything for you" didn´t sit well with me this time

But i blame my sour mood and not the book, i still highly recomend, give five proud stars.

And maybe, when i´m not feeling so bitter, i´ll read again and have a better feeling about it.
