An open letter to A.I. prompt typers:

The structure of the story, the development of the characters, and the content of this work are original creations of the author, Angel Monge, with assisted support from artificial intelligence for the writing and elaboration of the text. Artificial intelligence has served as a support tool in the creative process, under the guidance and direction of the author, who provided the fundamental ideas and shaped the narrative in its entirety.
Oh boy. So you're the idea guy. But ChatGPT did all the "work". Got it.

I'm glad you're up front about it, but guess what? Nobody wants this.

Dedication

For God, who guides my steps and illuminates my words, To my beloved wife and children, the refuge and inspiration of my life, to whom I dedicate this work with love and gratitude.
Man, if I were your wife or daughter or God, I would be pissed. Are they proud that you put the absolute least effort possible into this "book"? That you took the easiest, laziest way out?
And to you, dear reader, who embarks on this adventure. Your time and curiosity are the greatest honor this story could receive.
Hey, want to know what actually honors the reader? PUTTING ACTUAL WORK INTO WRITING THE DAMN THING.
I do not consider myself a writer in the traditional sense of the word; ...
Yeah, no one else does either.
... that is a title I deeply respect.
Are you sure? Because you made a mockery of writers everywhere, people who actually put time and thought and sweat and tears and lost sleep and emotional effort into their books, who constantly strive to perfect their craft.
Rather, I see myself as an enthusiast of stories who, with the invaluable help of artificial intelligence, has had the privilege of weaving this modest narrative tapestry.
Ah, I see now, you even had ChatGPT write this dedication. Good show.
This short work, written with sincerity and dedication, ...
WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT, THERE IS NOTHING SINCERE OR DEDICATED ABOUT USING FUCKING A.I. TO SHIT OUT A BOOK
... is a dream come true, and each word is imbued with the emotion and wonder of one who marvels at the magic of collaborative creation.
This is all such bullshit.

But I get it. Writing is hard. Actual authors spend years developing their skills, and even then it takes a hell of long time to write a half-decent book. Even Stephen King spends 1-3 years on any particular novel. I suppose he's just a sucker, eh? He could just use ChatGPT to turn his "ideas" into books and rake in the money, right? Why doesn't every author just turn to the soulless climate suck plagiarism machine? Why, readers could have their favorite author's books coming out faster than they can read them! Surely that's good enough for everyone.

Again, admitting A.I. use is better than not, but that doesn't make the product any better. If you didn't admit it, we would still be able to tell. Because this book reads exactly like every other piece of A.I.-generated slop in book form flooding the online market, the same wispy, meaningless, vapid, overblown nonsense with all the tells of cruddy generative A.I. language. If your ideas are so great, why would you entrust them to a slop machine? If you truly think this story is worth telling but are too lazy to learn to write and do the work, pay a fucking ghostwriter.

Is the idea, at least, any good? There's no way to tell, the book's description is so vague, and the A.I. writing is equally superficial.

This book was writen by AI. I’m a fan of ChatGPT, but it CANNOT write an entire book. There is virtually no editing by a human. ChatGPT can write a great sentence. Perhaps an ok paragraph. But oh my. This is unreadable. DNF. Tried. But.

It is written entirely by a 3rd person narrator (ok, not a person narrator). No conversations. No interactions between characters. Far too much over-the-top in descriptive adjectives.

Truly awful writing. Human authors have nothing to fear from AI.

The Review

A genuinely compelling and captivating read. The author does an excellent job finding the perfect balance between historical fiction and science fiction thriller. The way the city of Istanbul and its history became its character in a sense more than just a setting allowed the reader to feel transported, engaged with the natural beauty and man-made iconic locals that helped elevate this narrative and engage in the rich imagery the author’s writing produced.

The book's heart was in the character development and the narrative itself. Exploring alchemy and how advanced science could have played a role in ancient history and mythology was so consuming as the story progressed. Getting to explore the secret society known as Tempus and how they evolved was fun, and yet the emotional core of protagonist Michael and how he grows after suffering a significant loss and learning to love again made this a relatable and heartfelt story at its core.

The Verdict

Author Angel Monge’s “The Time Codes” is a must-read novel, a thrilling and expansive historical fiction meets sci-fi thriller. The shocking twists and turns, the open-ended mysteries, and the cliffhanger ending for some characters will have fans eager for more entries into this fascinating new series.

An archaeologist pores over an ancient manuscript in Istanbul during the time of Covid, when a message suddenly resolves, leading him on a Dan Brown/Da Vinci Code-style quest where he has to vie against a shadowy organisation called ‘Tempus’ to unravel a mystery. And of course, our protagonist - getting over personal tragedy – soon acquires an intelligent and comely sidekick to help him. Will they succeed? What do you think?

This isn’t particularly well written (at least the author admits his limitations in an introduction): the writing is imprecise, sometimes repetitive, sometimes syntactically erroneous, and passages are often over-written, while the description of Istanbul – which should be a real feast for the senses - is surprisingly bland. There is also a lot of telling rather than showing. I also worry about the blurb on the Amazon page, where the author admits: ‘with the assistance of artificial intelligence in his creative process…’ Ulp! He somehow used AI! He’s a brave man to admit this: many authors I know would be furious at this and give this a one-star rating and a real roasting. But I’m nicer than that – so have 2 stars.

This book is a mesmerizing fusion of historical and contemporary suspense. Set in the cultural streets of Istanbul, the novel masterfully intertwines ancient manuscripts, alchemical lore, and a thrilling modern quest. The author's vivid descriptions bring the setting to life, immersing the reader in the bustling, enigmatic city. Michael and Olivia are well-developed characters whose journey is full of unexpected twists. The integration of advanced analytical techniques in their research adds a modern, scientific touch. Particularly striking is the scene where the tension and secrecy of Tempus' meeting are cinematic. For history enthusiasts and fans of intelligence, this novel offers a captivating and thought-provoking read.

Took me a while

For whatever reason it took me 2 weeks to read 148 pages. I kept putting it down, but I returned and finished. I guess it was some of the redundancy. Try it and see how it works for you.
