The Expanse Between Us

Rate this book
An Enemies to Lovers romance with reverse Pride & Prejudice vibes… but in space.

The Mors Expanse. The deadliest stretch of space in the known galaxy. No one crosses it without good reason and a warship, which is why Driver Thorne is shocked when Serling Ambrose charters his ship for her crossing. A former soldier, Driver is one of the few pilots authorized to brave the Expanse. He’s at home in the fray, but Serling is the Federation leader’s sole heir, and The Mors is no place for such a valuable passenger… especially not one as cruel and selfish as Serling Ambrose.

She terrorizes the crew and makes an enemy of Driver, turning the already dangerous flight hostile, but when a catastrophic disaster knocks their ship off course, they crash land on an unforgiving alien planet with only two survivors.

Now forced to work side by side despite their intense hatred, tempers flare as Driver and Serling battle the constant threats. Lost with no hope of being rescued, they refuse to make peace even though they’re the only two people left alive. But when Driver unexpectedly risks his life to save hers, Serling's hate morphs into something life-altering and terrifying. Something that cannot exist between a war-hardened pilot and the heir to the Federation.

An enemies to lovers, age gap romance, The Expanse Between Us has 65 (the sci-fi movie with my favorite Adam) meets reverse Pride & Prejudice vibes. This slow burn romance is meant for a mature audience. Please see the author's note at the beginning of this book for more information.

For what this is? Perfection.

She’s a small but mighty - just under 300 pages

Spicy sci-fi

Our two main characters are the sole survivors of a ship crash; stranded alone on a empty hostile planet they have to rely on each other to survive.

God bless Adam driver for inspiring so many great works of fiction

- she’s the grump and he doesn’t put up with it
-older couple

I’ve never read like a stranded/ survival book but i really enjoyed it!

I’ll be reading more from this author

I loved this! A reverse pride & prejudice set in space 🙌🏽
A 6’5 scarred space ship pilot & a spoiled rude FMC are stranded on a scary alien planet. They have to work together to survive… is there anything better?
This author does a great job of plot with action that keeps you engaged but also great characters growth & swoon worthy romance. The spice in this one too!!! Damn ❤️‍🔥

DNF @20%

Both the main characters are completely unlikeable. They are total strangers and hate each other from a fake hello. There's no back story this far as to why and it's a bit unhinged for people their age. The flight ends up crash landing and they are the only two survivors and they still act like each others mortal enemies. I can't stick around long enough to watch them fall in love cause I wouldn't even believe them capable

One of the best enemies-to-lovers stories I've ever read.

Serling Ambrose is a major asshole. She is filthy rich, the heir to the Imperator (more on this fuckface later) and treats absolutely everyone like garbage. Driver Thorne is the scarred war hero who is stuck with this entitled princess and must get everyone, his crew and passengers across a brutally dangerous part of space. Then things go boom and the two are stuck together in a planet where danger comes from just about everywhere.

N.R. Scarano can write heartfelt scenes, spicy spice, and characters full of flaws and emotion like few other authors. She also included one of the nastiest villains I've met recently. Seriously, Serling's dad is a cruel and cold man with zero love for his daughter and only seeing her as a chess piece in his never-ending game.

This was a fast read for me at around 260 pages, and I highly recommend the escapist fun that is The Expanse Between us.

The killer swamp monster and human killing plant were a lot of fun, the H and h were not. i love a good enemies to lovers and hate f*ck vibes but those vibes were just too OTT and lasted too long here for me to really form a solid connection to the characters.

Overall: 2.5

this was good but I wanted to see them stranded on the planet longer…maybe figure out who shot them down(even tho we all know who it was) all the slow burn was during the timeskip 😞 so it was like there was none. Also the fact that the mmc name is Driver… and I pictured him as Adam Driver. It might be obvious to everyone but me but in my world this was Reylo fanfic if Ben was lowborn and Rey was a princess and they were stranded on a hostile planet. Overall I know it’s a novella but it would be amazing as a full length book.

This was cute for what it was, I enjoyed both characters and the plot. I just wish this was a bit longer and less smutty. I wanted more intimate and innocent moments between the main characters instead.

A SciFi Romance…Scarano NEVER Disappoints!!

Another GREAT book by Scarano!! This one is under her pen name N.R. Scarano, which are more spicy than under her regular name.

As much as this centers around a slow building, enemies to lovers romance, there is much more to it. It’s a Science Fiction Romance. It’s about the driver of a ship and a famous political woman who is a total b*tch. They have to cross through a dangerous section of space, when an unexpected disaster causes them to crash. Driver, the pilot and Serling the b*tch are the only ones left alive, stranded on a dangerous planet. Every thing that could go wrong does, and they are fighting to survive. But can they survive each other?!

Scarano writes the kind of characters that ingrain themselves in your heart and imagination. Driver and Serling are no exception, they both come from dark backgrounds, although in completely different ways. Driver is a protector to the end, he will die before letting someone placed under his care get hurt. He is powerless, relentless and a survivor, but this planet may be his undoing. Serling is stubborn, tenacious, intelligent and beautiful.

It’s a lot of fun seeing this alien planet with all its dangers and delights, world building was great there and in the ship. It was nice seeing the growth in these characters and falling in love with them. Scarano always writes book that give the escape we need, and I depend a lot on escapism and so many books don’t do that for me. Scarano has definitely become one of my favorite authors. I need to buy more and read everything she has written, and will write!!

“An enemies to lovers romance with reverse Pride & Prejudice vibes… but in space” … um, YES PLEASE!!

I really enjoyed this book and managed to read it pretty much start to finish during my flight over to NZ last week. It was a great spicy sci-fi romance that included some of my favourite tropes:
⭐️ Hate to love romance, with a strong focus on the relationship development
⭐️ Tall, scarred older MMC (who was Adam Driver coded, his name was even ‘Driver’ lol)
⭐️ Dual POV
⭐️ Spicy 🌶️🌶️
⭐️ He has visible scars, she has invisible ones
⭐️ She’s the grump
⭐️ Forced proximity… on a remote planet

The start was a little rocky because I thought it was a bit unbelievable that they just hated each other for no real reason - other than their ‘class divide’ with her being a snobby rich heiress and him being the ‘lower class’ wounded retired soldier who won’t take her shit (hence the reverse P&P vibes). I do love a proper enemies to lovers so I could let it go and just enjoy their hate/banter, which was excellent 😏 after they crash on the planet though, I felt like we really got to know the two characters on a deeper level, and their relationship made more sense. I loved getting both POVs to see how they changed and grew over time, especially in what they thought of each other and how they learned to look beyond first impressions. Some of the things they said or thought had me melting and/or tearing up 🥺

The character development was actually pretty good for such a short book. I also thought the action scenes were well written and suspenseful. The writing overall was good too, a few bumps that could have been ironed out with a really good edit, but nothing that distracted from the plot.

I would absolutely read more set in this world!!

THIS NEEDS MORE LOVE AND APPRECIATION!! ❤️❤️❤️ DEAR FRIENDS AND READERS, if you enjoy a good enemies to lovers, opposites attract and stranded on a unknown planet romance, seriously PICK THIS ONE UP! I adored the chemistry between the MCs, how virile the MMC was, and how wonderfully paced their romance was. BEST PART OF MY SUNDAY! It's been AGES since I've read a romance novel I could truly enjoy and recommend, no questions asked.

I went into this blind, and I loved it! I'm convinced I've found a new author to love.

DRIVER was the absolute type of MMC I crush on. Military guys are IT for me, and his capabilities as a pilot, protector and survivalist meshed all in one?? Vroom vroom, that man has my engines revving! LOL! But seriously, I'm a sucker for serious men who don't take shit or nonsense, and Driver's met his match in an uptight, obnoxious heiress who doesn't mask her hatred for him. I have to commend on his patience for dealing with Serling in the beginning, and his character for not leaving her to die when they crash landed. He was so reliable, protective, and just soooo virile, I can't stop saying that word HAHA! Anyways, he's too good to be true, but I love it. Driver wasn't an empty shell of a 2d character, his background was riddle in pain, but his character was loud because he was a survivor who forged on no matter what life threw at him, heck half of his body was blown apart and still he survived. Secondly, he crashed onto an unknown planet, and still didn't die. STRONG AND RESILIENT. If you're stranded on a hostile alien planet, he's definitely the guy you want to be with, and also, if you happen to fall in love? Well then, you'll get really glorious steamy action.

SERLING was a pain in the ass, but I didn't hate her. In fact, I knew she was going to be terribly obnoxious from the get go. But before you judge her, know she's a hard candy with gooey centre. She was a bitch mainly from her upbringing. I guess Sterling just developed a defense mechanism against her oppressive parents and hypocritical high society life. I mean, this was the type of troupe you'd expect a horrible Princess persona to clash with an upright, humble citizen like Driver. Serling's a different kind of pain. She was a DOWNRIGHT BITCH and causing others pain just because she was dissatisfied with her life. It took crash landing on a hostile planet to get her wires straight, and for her to WAKE THE FUCK UP and change for good. It wasn't an easy road, she was still a bitch in the beginning of their crash landing period, and only started to soften up through the perilous situations the duo encountered.

OVERALL I LOVED IT. No offense to authors who write about insta-love, but this is how a true romantic novel should be like. We know the characters don't like each other, despite how attraction blooms, and we get to see and experience their relationship changing, from nothing to something more, and the desperation of love when your partner gets hurt or worse, on the verge of death, and the bravery to defy all odds, facing your fears in the name of love....well, this was a solid 10 FUCKING GOLD STARS ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐x2 from me.

4.5 stars rounded up ofc!

I have loved both of Scarano's books, I think she has two different aliases because this account makes spicier books? Anyways this was such a cute sci-fi. I've been meaning to get into sci-fi again because I read a sci-fi trilogy that changed my life.

The start is a little bit slow but then it speeds up and once the enemies became lovers I couldn't stop swooning and giggling. I love love love the FMC's character development and also how much they care for each other this whole book was so sweet and the little obstacle and heartbreak near the end was perfect for setting up a HEA!

Obviously some people wouldn't rate it so high but I'm also new to sci-fi so my rating would be higher then most people. This book really reminds of these broken stars which is SOSO good, definitely read both books.

Rich bitch FMC meets rugged ex-war hero who doesn’t take her shit but can’t help himself and falls for her anyway? I’m ready 🙋🏻‍♀️
What a fun sci-fi ride!!! My favorite tropes are in this short book- enemies to lovers, mean girl FMC, and survivalist environment! Driver and Sterling were a great couple. I really appreciated that they didn’t immediately fall in love as soon as they realized their circumstances- the character development felt real for such a short novel. These two truly hated each other 😂 I enjoyed the world building, and although some parts were a little cringey, I didn’t care at all as it was such a cool premise. I will definitely read more from this author!

‘The Expanse Between Us’ is a deeply focused and emotional story of survival, growth, and the human need for connection. It was first N R Scarano and it definitely won’t be my last.

A few things I really loved:
The dynamic between Serling and Driver evolves beautifully over the course of the book. Their gradual shift from mistrust and animosity to cooperation and, eventually, something deeper, felt so natural and believable. It reminded me of films where the majority of the action takes place in a single, confined space—everything is so tightly focused on these two people, forcing you to invest completely in their story.

I appreciated how the romance didn’t unfold too easily. Even as they grew closer, challenges kept coming, and their survival depended on learning to trust each other and work together. The pacing felt perfect, allowing their disdain to melt away in a way that felt earned rather than rushed.

The ending was a highlight for me—it brought everything together in an unexpected twist that I absolutely loved.

This book also has a lot to say about humanity’s adaptability and our deep need for connection, even in the harshest circumstances. I especially loved Serling’s redemption arc. It’s rare to see a character start out as truly unlikeable but then grow so much throughout the story. By the end, you find yourself rooting for her in a way you never expected when you first started the book.

If you enjoy slow-burn enemies-to-lovers stories with strong themes of survival and personal growth, this book is a fantastic choice. It’s an emotional, character-driven journey I won’t soon forget.

I just finished this book and really liked it! It’s like Pride & Prejudice in space with a scarred pilot and a spoiled, rude heroine stranded on a dangerous alien planet. They have to work together to survive, and the tension between them was amazing!

For a short book, the character development felt real, and I loved seeing both perspectives as they learned to understand each other. The action was exciting, and the romance was both sweet and spicy! If you love fast-paced sci-fi with enemies-to-lovers, this is a great short read :)

My first sci-fi romance? I never thought I’d see the day! 😂

Serling and Driver end up being the sole survivors after crash landing on an unknown planet… they hate each other, and have to work together, albeit begrudgingly, to find resources to stay alive until someone rescues them.

Serling is easy to hate initially, but thankfully, she experiences some character growth. Driver is a take no shit kind of guy, and doesn’t put up with her spoiled attitude.

An enemies to lovers on an unforgiving planet — a cute, easy read!

I can't believe I read this book about space aircraft crashing while being on the plane myself.. but it kind of worked...

A standalone sci-fi novel about "unfortunate" events of crashing on an alien planet and having to be in the forced proximity together as two hot and sexy people. This book surprised me with its character growth as the female main character was insufferable first, but I love her now.

It's under 300 pages, its fun, its sexy, it has a plot, go read it.

Are you joking? This was so good!!! This short, stand-alone, sci-fi romance packs a serious punch.

🌸 Unabashed Adam Driver (65) fanfic
🌸 Female bully
🌸 True hate to love
🌸 The relentless struggle to survive, alone on a hostile planet
🌸 Beautiful, deeply emotional writing
🌸 Intense steam

Nicole Scarano (author of The Scattered Bones) is ridiculously under-rated. I can't wait to dig deeper into her backlist!

Yes there is smut: 🌶️🌶️🌶️

This was perfect. She was able to write two characters who had insta hate for each other without it being cringey which is hard to do. Plus a crash landing and survival mode forced proximity? Yes please.

Go read this immediately it’s short and a good break from a high fantasy. A perfect pallet cleanser.

Even though I believe this book has it's flaws in pacing, I think I can confirm my love Nicole Scarano. Her characters are so intense that you cannot stop reading.
Both Serling and Driver (a bit on the nose with the pilot's name), are good complements to each other. Their hate/love it's easy to understand and believe, given their backgrounds.
Also, I can't get enough of a big, rough, pining man.

Only because I’m not big into age gap 🫣 (11 years which isn’t bad at all) and what felt like insta love, can’t exist without you after you risked your life for me once.
I’ll definitely read more from this author though!
