Rate this book

USA TODAY bestselling author Stephanie Bond was seven years deep into a systems engineering career and pursuing an MBA at night when an instructor remarked that she had a flair for writing and suggested that she submit to academic journals. But Stephanie, a voracious reader, was only interested in writing fiction–more specifically, romantic fiction.

Upon completing her master’s degree and with no formal training in writing (her undergraduate degree is in computer programming), she started writing a romance novel in her spare time. Two years later in 1995 she sold her first manuscript, a romantic comedy, to Harlequin Books.

In 1997, with ten sales under her belt to two publishers, Stephanie left her corporate job to write women’s romantic fiction full-time. In 2011,

Stephanie launched a self-publishing business. Since that time, she has sold more than 1 million copies of her own books. To-date, Stephanie has published over 70 novels and has over 6 million copies of her work in worldwide distribution in numerous languages and formats.

I got so mad about clay assaulting Annabelle when they first meet, I'm not sure I can finish this. And to just pass it off as romantic? No thank you.

"Clay registered lush softness and exquisite flavors before she realized he was kissing her. She gasped and stiffened, but he captured her hands and chased her mouth as she tried to wrench away, pressing her shoulders into the wall. She grunted and bit down, but he levered his mouth and stilled her squirming by imprisoning her legs with his, maintaining constant but gentle pressure on her lips."

Excuse me? This does not scream a consenting kiss to me.

Today's selection is light and fun, overall a romantic comedy. So, if you love watching these types of movies, you will love Stephanie Bond's new book Stop the Wedding. Let's meet the characters and what I thought of the book.

Character list:

Annabelle Coakley: Divorce Lawyer, and daughter of the bride.
Clay Castleberry: A Venture Capitalist and son of the groom
Martin Castleberry: the groom, some what a playboy, work on his 6th marriage
Belle Coakley: the Bride, widow
Michaela (aka Mike): friend and sounding board of Annabelle

My thoughts:

You have to view this as if you were watching this unfold on the screen (by the way would be HILARIOUS). With all romantic comedies you have your cast of characters and how they all work together. Annabelle and Clay actually have the same mission: to break their parents apart, but they don't realize they are on the same page. So, the story really focuses on those two trying to sabotage the relationship and call off the wedding. If you are a fan of romantic comedies you know that this never works, and you just have to watch how it all plays out.

In all romantic comedies you have the unlikely couple, which you can guess (at least I hope). If you remember the plot from My Best Friend's Wedding, some what similar to that plot except you have the kids trying to break the wedding. I have to say it's a lot of fun. Plus, you need the friend that says, "this is a bad idea." Do they listen to friend? No, but the friend is always there. Finally for a complete romantic comedy you need the moment where you worry if it will all workout or not (the nail bitting moment). If you are a sap like me, you will start crying at that moment.

Which Stop the Wedding! has all the makings of a romantic comedy movie. I think this book would be hilarious if they ever do that. I loved Annabelle and Clay, because they have so much animosity towards each other. At the same time, they are so attracted to one another and trying to fight there feelings to save there parents from disaster. FUN, FUN, FUN! I loved this story. So, if you are looking for a quick light read, I would suggest Stephanie Bond's Stop the Wedding!

So, I leave you today and I hope you are finding those fun reads.

The book can be described as a romantic comedy of errors. It's not laugh out loud funny. It's not too silly or completely unrealistic. Sarcasm and dry wit are plentiful from two lonely people, attorney Annabelle and businessman Clay, who don’t believe in happily ever after. The two come together to stop the wedding of their parents, a widowed housewife and a notorious womanizer. They don’t trust each other’s intentions regarding why they want to stop their parent’s wedding. Despite distrust and many misunderstandings between Annabelle and Clay, they can’t seem to fight their attraction to one another. The outcomes of some early misunderstandings are predictable, but the road leading to the truth and the anticipation was so very worth it. The relationship between a grieving daughter and her lonely mother was moving and meaningful. Unlike some of Stephanie Bond’s novels, there is not any foul language (none!) and not any explicit sex (like a particular hot shower scene from the Body Movers series). The chemistry between Clay and Annabelle was wonderful. Not only did I root for Clay and Annabelle and their unsuspecting happily ever after, but for their parents, Belle and Melvin (I mean Martin). A fun and quick entertaining read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and could imagine it being made into a film. It was funny and I loved all the characters even Clay being the nasty one - but all his mistakes came good in the end.
It’s just a good fictional fun read and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Corny, predictable, a bit melodramatic, syrupy sweet at the end...typical for the era this was written. Bond is pretty good so only a few really cringe worthy scenes. I think I’ve read it and forgot it, too. Not a great read when that happens. I remembered only from the cringe worthy store scene.

Synopsis- 2 cynical adult children, clay and Annabelle, try to sabotage the marriage plans of their parents. Clays widowed dad was a former movie star who was a serial groom who Clay had to constantly protect from young gold diggers. Annabelle the daughter of the bride to be was worried Martin, clays dad and who she called Marvin, would hurt her mom by his lack of commitment.

Both clay and Annabelle are pretty condescending with their parents which made me think insecure whining brats. While distrustful of each other they team up to break up their parents. That was a bit far fetched and supposed to be tongue in cheek I suppose. That fell flat in its execution because Annabelle, a tough divorce attorney who could take care of herself, suddenly kept getting in silly situations where she had to depend on Clay to extricate her. But the reverse never happened which made the relationship balance uneven and Clay not seem human. Plus, with the saving all one sided, the damsel in distress routine got old quickly, particularly when Clay was such a condescending rich jerk. I never really warmed to Clay which for me is a must in a romance. I have to like both main characters in a cheesy romance.

In the end I just saw 2 really horny jerks who fought physical attraction and not true affection. Obviously, it’s no spoiler to say it’s a HEA romance but the love was sudden and Clay’s quick reversal to undying love felt disingenuous.

I could not get into this book. I am usually delighted with this sort of premise, but not this time.

First, I didn't like Annabelle or Clay's characters. They didn't click for me. The scene where Clay "saves" her from being arrested struck me as tired and overdone. The flip of the switch on Annabelle's feelings toward Clay was not credible.

Second, their parents. I didn't like them (or their relationship). I thought Annabelle's mother, especially, to be inconsiderate and flighty.

I stopped reading the book about 2/3 of the way through. I ceased to care about the characters or the outcome. Also, the writing itself was a little boring and uninspired.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Like many other reviewers, I completely failed to see the comedy in this story. Perhaps it was because I just finished "Gone Girl" right before reading this one, but I found the book trite, unrealistic and extremely predictable. Also, slightly insulting as it was clearly a "I will write the type of man that women want men to be rather than what they really are" book. Maybe I am not typical, but that type of hero has zero appeal to me.

Anyway, it is done and I can check another book off my list towards my 2012 goal. Onwards!

A quick, fluffy, clean read. Annabelle is trying to stop her mother's marriage to a washed up actor. Clay is trying to stop his washed up actor dad from marrying a supposed gold digger. Neither of them believe in marriage and plan to stop their parent's wedding to each other. Mistaken identity, anger, and chemistry between Annabelle & Clay have them trying to thwart their parents wedding plans while trying to fight the attraction & loathing that's sizzling between them.

I love this author and the humor she mixes in with her books...this did not have that. It was a cute romance but I wanted funny and I was disappointed. At least it was a quick one!

L'attrazione è immediata, come pure l'insofferenza.

I tried this mainly because it was a free loaner from the kindle lending library. It's billed as a romantic comedy, but I don't think it qualifies as either.

The story centers around two unhappy, emotionally stunted people who attempt to manipulate their trusting parents (who are truly in love) into arguing and calling off their wedding. Sounds hilarious, right? No, I didn't think so either.

The woman's daughter is a divorce attorney who believes that all marriages are doomed to fail (in spite of her parents long and loving marriage, apparently). She sees her mother as the latest victim of 'cassanova Castelberry', an aging ex-movie star who has been married six times. She doesn't want her mother's heart to be broken when he inevitably tires of her and moves on.

The man's son is a pompous ass with a poorly explained (but high paying) job, who thinks that his father is about to be taken for a ride by a gold digger out for his fortune.

I really didn't detect any comedy going on. All the misunderstandings are simply sad, as everyone consistently assumes the worst of each other, and nothing but angst and bad feeling is created by them. The eventual exposition of Castleberry Junior's misconceptions was humiliating for him, and uncomfortable to read.

There is no chemistry at all between the grown children, although they somehow end up in love. I get that the whole 'hate becomes love' thing is tried & true in romance writing, but there was nothing here to help the transition. Yelling...kissing...yelling...kissing. Seemed kind of schizophrenic.

In short: bad book.

One of the worst books I have ever tried to read. I only got 1/3 of the way through and I think I've only given up on about 5 books in my whole life (and I read 3 books a week). Just dreadful. Stupid plot that made no sense - why is Annabelle so anti marriage, her parents had a good relationship - why is she so disrespectful to her mother's by continually and deliberately getting Martin's name wrong. Why do both the younger people treat their parents as if they are children? And why are all 4 main characters so utterly unlikeable? I couldn't care less about any of them, there was nothing empathetic about them. It also seemed like it was written in the 50's with Annabelle thinking she was so wild buying leopard print underwear, good God! So prudish for a young, corporate woman. It makes me so angry that absolute crap like this gets published. I'm all for light entertainment but that doesn't mean it has to be idiotic and dull! Look at authors like Marion Keyes and Cathy Kelly who write primarily light, fun books that are still very entertaining, well constructed and well written. Just awful! Wish I could give this no stars.

Another light and funny read by this author. This is only 179 pages and I don't usually bother with stories under 200 pages but she's not released a dud for me yet so I took a chance on it. It wasn't my favourite of hers as I prefer a book with more mystery in and this one didn't have a great deal.
There was a line with terrible English I highlighted-"Perhaps we can look for you some clothes tomorrow". Not sure what happened there. There was only one apostrophe mistake and she used on hindsight instead of in but that was it for mistakes.
There were some really funny lines in it again. I did tire a little of the Martin/Melvin thing, though along with the I-yie-yie thing.
I have a couple more already downloaded. If you want something light (which I do from time-to-time among my regular fare of murderation) then you can't go far wrong.

I'm quoting the author in saying that this is an uncomplicated fun read. Annabelle is a a divorce lawyer jaded by love, she only believes in working seventy hours a week, after one day she receives a phone call from mother giving her worst possible news, she is getting married to the notorious playboy that she's only been dating for two months. Clayton also a workaholic is worry that yet another gold digger is after his father's state. So Annabel and Clay set out to Stop the weeding. By doing so they get into all kids of trouble that only leads to them falling in love but they are both to stubborn to realize. Stop the weeding is quick and cute weekend read.

This book was not in my usual genre....I am strictly a mystery and thriller type. But I have read Ms Bond's book before and thought I would try this one. It was a change but a delightful one. While no one got killed...there was a romance and a love and hate relationship. Both Annabelle and Clay didnt want their parents to marry each other. They go about breaking them up only to find there was a spark between them they never expected. A cute story and well worth the read!

Loved, loved this book. It was just what I needed after two less than stellar books. This is just light, fun reading. Nothing major to think about or ponder, but still leaves you with wanting to read more. This is the 3rd book I think I have read from her and I will continue to read what she writes.
Definitely worth the read!

Mini review!

qualche ora sotto l'ombrellone. Lo stile fluido della Bond è molto
piacevole e non stanca.

This was such a feel good book.
You've got love at first site or at least love at first arrest. You've got your misunderstandings and your make ups and it really is a hallmark love story. Which I know some people hate as they're predictable but you know, there are times in life where you need some predictable and happy endings. Because life can be shitty and unpredictable.

first of all I failed to see why this was listed as a comedy. it was trite, silly, and completely unrealistic. And yes I know its a fiction novel but even by those standards it was ridiculous. I didn't like any of the characters and it was all just too cliche.

Stop the Wedding!

In A Nutshell:A daughter (Annabelle Coakley) wants to stop her mother marrying a 'has been' movie star (Martin Castleberry) and being bride number 6. A son (Clay Castleberry) wants to stop his father from marrying a 'gold digger' (Belle Coakley). Both children have their wires crossed. It's mildly amusing, it could have been funny, but it is steeped in stereotypes.

An old man (75) marrying a woman 25 years his junior. Okay, it's not a girl just out of adolescence, but it's still 25 years. The daughter of the bride Annabelle Coakley is a divorce lawyer, and Clay Castleberry, son of the groom, is a venture capitalist. So, it's rich v poor. And Annabelle is the classic beauty and he so handsome blah blah blah. There was the opportunity for far more humour than was delivered. The romance, the ending are all predictable.

(Hörbuch-Review)
