4 1/2 stars. Funny, dark humor for kids who like it. If the fish being eaten in This is Not My Hat does not bother your child, and the slimy dinosaur spittle on the classmate in We Don't Eat Our Classmates is hilarious, please bring Who Ate Steve home immediately. Great illustration, very tongue in cheek, and a lot of fun. I put this at second and third grade level because in my experience kindergartners and first graders are trying so hard to do things right that this type of humor horrifies them.

Incontournable Mai 2025

It is time to learn about size, and Marcel the bird and Steve the worm have offered to assist. Unfortunately, just as the story gets going, Marcel decides to do as birds do and catch Steve up in his mouth. Much to the dismay of the narrator, the story cannot continue until Marcel decides to give Steve up for good. But even with Steve back, the momentum of the story has altogether changed, giving readers a taste of the unexpected. This clever story is ideally suited to be read aloud to a group of young children. Not only are the children themselves referenced directly within the narrative, but the interactive elements of the book are especially pleasing in a group setting. Fans of Mo Willems will find similar structures and design in this book, and an unexpected ending is a surprise for everyone. Large, dynamic fonts are used throughout the book, presenting the narrator's thoughts in a way that keeps readers engaged. The colorful, expressive illustrations tell their own story beside the written words, and children will love observing what is happening on the page especially as it contradicts their expectations. Built with a sturdy binding and thick pages, this book is designed to be enjoyed a multitude of times. This is an excellent addition to read aloud and Storytime collections, particularly those intended for preschool aged readers.

This book is an absolute riot. Who Ate Steve? might look like a simple picture book, but the humor is sharp, absurd, and laugh-out-loud funny for way beyond the preschool crowd. My 8 and 11 year old were genuinely in stitches when I previewed it, and that almost never happens with picture books anymore. The deadpan narration, the escalating silliness, and the expressive illustrations make it feel very Jon Klassen–esque in the best way. This is one of those rare read-alouds that hooks kids of all ages, and I already know it’s going to be a huge hit when I read it to my library classes. Highly recommend if you want a guaranteed laugh.

Silly antics of Marcel, a dapper yet persistent bird, who wants to make a snack of Steve, the worm. Interactive text that speaks to the reader/audience, which can annoy but in this case works fine (once a novel concept in picture books circa 2014 or so, it feel gimmicky/unnecessary now).

The undertext is comparing size: Marcel the bird is Big and Steve the Worm is Small, but unfortunately that gets lost in the mayhem and madness of Marcel chasing Steve and nearly getting away with it.

The humor here is suitable for littles up with elementary age and beyond. Plus the Richard Scarry-esque illustrations are divine: Steve the worm here reminds me of his Lowly Worm, even sporting a hat.

Themes: birds, worms, humor

I recently accompanied my young niece and nephew on a library visit. (They had not spent much time in a public library because of COVID.) The sheer astonishment as they realized “all the books here can be read for free as many times as we want!” made me recall my childhood library memories.

Now onto the book: the belly laughs this book inspired were unbelievable. The illustrations were spot on and the timing and dramatic pauses of the words will make the adults belly laugh!!

Do yourself a favor: read this book soon! :-)

Who Ate Steve? Is a hilarious, captivating, action-packed, and fun read! In this book the narrorator speaks directly to the reader teaching them about size.......or maybe not. Marcel the bird and Steve the worm have offered to help but where's Steve? Marcel continously plots to steal Steve and eat him as a tasty snack. The narrorator won't allow it. Readers will love this hilarious push and pull which puts poor Steve in continous danger. Readers will never see the final twist coming!

This is a hilarious book to read aloud. Intending to teach about size, the book starts with a bird named Marcel and a worm named Steve being asked to help demonstrate big and small. Marcel however has other priorities. The excellent voice and pacing will engage kids. I loved the comically expressive illustrations that only add to the humor. Great for fans of We Don't Eat Our Classmates or Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus and best read with lots of enthusiasm.

With a similar vibe to Be Quiet!, the narrator tries to illustrate size differences. This becomes impossible as the narrator must continuously rescue the "small" example. Abundant asides punctuated with increasing exasperation make this story a treat.

A fun interactive book about a bird who just can't help but eat the small worm who is his costar in the picture book. The books breaks the third wall and has the narrator talking to the reader, which kids love in read aloud. Also has a surprise ending which is another kid fav. Great read aloud for old elementary.

The narrator of this book is trying to create an extremely interesting story about size, but Marcel the big bird is being very badly behaved and keeps trying to eat Steve the small worm. ‘Who Ate Steve’ is a riotous romp packed with hilarious illustrations and it works particularly well when read aloud in a group.

A darkly amusing story. The narrator attempts to teach readers about big and small animals. However, Marcel, the big bird makes several attempts to eat Steve, the small worm. The narrator scolds Marcel and Steve is returned. Readers see this happen several times until the narrator finally finishes identifying the big and the small animals. I love the surprise ending.

Vivid graphics illustrate the difference in size between Marcel the large bird and Steve the small worm, but also show Marcel’s predatory nature, repeatedly. I wasn’t enthralled by the author’s scolding of Marcel, but was delighted by the entrance of Felicity at the end.
Clear, humorous graphics, and diverse text make for an appealing, laugh out loud book.

A lovely read aloud picture book which breaks the third wall (or is the fourth wall??). A fun and humorous way to introduce the concept of size with Marcel the bird and Steve the worm. Can they be convinced to play nice together? And who appears on the last page. Loved it.

Aanrader!

Brought this in to my preschool class. I laughed so hard. The kids loved it. We’ve had the book two weeks now and I still have kids walking around the class mumbling “who ate Steve?” and naming their dolls Steve and Marcel.
