“I’m sure I can get this right. Pumpkin is meant to be mine, and I’m meant to be hers. We’ll figure out things together.”
“You’re giving me a book?” He sounds incredulous.
“I’m giving you my number. In a book. So technically, yes.”
“But honey, she’s a”—Mom lowers her voice to a whisper—“pit bull.”
It’s been a while since someone asked me to do something with no ulterior motive. At least, I don’t think she has one.
“I realized you were right. I was shoving away the things I loved. I thought they would tempt me into doing something rash, and I’d go back to jail.”
“Love is being there for someone. Being strong for them. Caring about their happiness. Supporting their hopes and dreams. Love isn’t selfish. Love isn’t fear.”
“Hmm?” my friend answers, clearly half asleep.
“I need you to wake up, get dressed, and bring me some pizza. Major life decisions are being made, and I require the presence of my best friend.”
“Okay.”
"You're giving me a book?" He sounds incredulous.
"I'm giving you my number. In a book. So technically, yes."
Would she gasp? Moan? Whisper dirty things in my ear?
"Do you think this place has nachos?"
Apparently, our minds are on different tracks.
