This double cold case and current homicide have Oregon State Police Fish and Wildlife Trooper Gabriel Hawke calling in favors… and exploring a childhood he shoved into the deep recesses of his mind.
While patrolling on the Snake River in Hells Canyon, Gabriel Hawke’s dog digs up a human bone. Hawke is confronted by an aunt he doesn’t remember, and he finds a canister of film when the rest of the remains are excavated. The film shows someone being killed and a rifle pointed at the photographer.
Going through missing person files, Hawke discovers the victims of the decades-old double homicide. A person connected to the original crime is murdered, giving Hawke more leads and multiple suspects.
Attending a local Powwow with his family, Hawke discovers more about his childhood and realizes his suspects have been misleading him.

Riding horses and battling rattlesnakes, she not only writes the western lifestyle, she lives it.
I'm sad the series is over but I enjoyed this last book so much. I love Hawke and his easy going personality. He always seems to come across a murder and can't stop until it's solved and I love every minute of this series. In this last book of the series, there is a double cold case Hawke gets involved in and it was so good! Trying to figure out "who-dun-it" is what make the book fun to read. I love that Paty Jager incorporated Hawke's heritage through the Powwow in this book. I loved it. I listened to the audio version and once again Larry Gorman was the narrator who is fantastic. I love his voice and after listening to the audio version of the whole series, Gorman has become the voice of Hawke. I would have giving this book a 5 star, but I was hoping to find out more about Hawke's personal life and where it would end. I'm hoping for one more book someday where Hawke retires and who knows what adventures or crimes he would solve up in the mountain with Dani. Great series. Highly recommend.
This double cold case and current homicide have Oregon State Police Fish and Wildlife Trooper Gabriel Hawke calling in favors. During the investigation a person from his past has him exploring childhood memories he shoved into the deep recesses of his mind.
In my opinion this is the best in the series so far. Gabriel keeps evolving personally. He has started to let people get closer to him. He and Dani are doing great as a couple and he is getting to know his sister again and spending more time with friends and family. This mystery is great. Mrs. Jager perfectly wove the investigation of the cold cases with the current homicide. I can’t wait to read the next in the series.
All thoughts and opinions are my own, I have not been influenced by anyone.
First read by this author, I liked it quite a bit and the narrator was good as well. This is part of a series following the mc Hawke. When human remains are found scattered between a cougar’s cave and an eagle’s nest, things get interesting. A cold case is suddenly opened up. This was a fast paced novel moving to a surprising conclusion. I especially like books set in the west, so even better for me.
Audio thicket email led me to a link for an ARC audio on StoryOrigin. The free code was for Spotify, kinda new to listening on there. This did not affect my honest review. I had been listening to this on my way back and forth to the YMCA, but with all this snow affecting travel, I decided I better listen at home. So I did.
I enjoyed this book. Hawke certainly had his work cut out for him in this book, with a murder accruing because of the cold case he was investigating. Not to mention all the twist the investigation took, you can safely say it never got boring, in fact it kept me on my toes trying to figure it out. I love the characters in this series but unlike other books in this series the story focused more on the investigation, with a little bit of family heritage thrown in, which meant it left very little time for the antics from the animals. Normally I would complain because hey who doesn't love the animals but in this story with so much going on they weren't needed and I was still hooked. The story works as a standalone but to be honest it is such a great series and very different to most of the books out there that I would recommend the series to any body who likes an action packed adventure with lots of twists and mystery. I can't wait for the next book and hope there are still lots of ideas and stories to come. When State Police Fish and Wildlife Trooper Gabriel Hawke is doing his yearly check on the snake river, his dog discovers human bones. It's not long before he is digging up more evidence that has him opening up a murder investigation. With the bones and tattered clothes he discovers a film case and the developed pictures shows what was thought of an accidental death was murder. Can Hawke find the killer of both men? Getting close to finding the answers gives him another murder to investigate, someone is covering there tracks and wants everything to stay buried. I like the narrator. He makes it easy to picture the story unfolding and has a pleasant voice that just makes the story and time fly bye. I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
This is one of the best books in this series so far... I couldn't put it down and even had a tear or two in my eye towards the end.
This series is about Gabriel Hawke, a Fish and Wildlife State Trooper who patrols the hills and rivers for people hunting without licences and other illegal practices. He has Native American ancestry and is very proud of that fact. His Mum and Sister still live on the reservation; his partner, Dani spends most of the year at her hunting lodge, but finds time to fly into town to spend time at her and Gabriel's new house.
Each book is a stand-alone story that usually involves a murdered body, and Hawke has to find the killer. He has his trusty animals by his side, Dog and Horse, and Dot has recently joined them.
Each book is fast paced, some humour is there, as well as a bit of romance, but most of all friendships, integrity and trust are the backbone of this series (and of other series by Paty Jager).
Whilst each book is a stand-alone story, the books are best read in order of publication to preserve continuity of the characters and wider storyline.
I can't wait to read the next book in this series.
If you liked this book, then two other series by Paty Jager may be of interest; Shandra Higheagle and The Spotted Pony Casino. Each has a similar Native American background, and there's a slight crossover with some characters in the Spotted Pony Casino series also in this series.
Oregon State Trooper/Fish and Wildlife service Gabriel Hawke is enjoying some river duty when he finds himself enmeshed in cold cases that turn into additional current cases but are all interconnected. The whole thing is a mess that just keeps getting worse. The good thing about it all is that it has Hawke rejoining his father's family and others at the dancing. The descriptions of the wilderness and insights into the well developed characters (including Hawke's animal assistants) are every bit as engaging and researched as the intricate plot. Love this series and highly value Larry Gorman's narrations. I must admit that the Spotify site is a bit scatty for audiobooks and prefer other venues. @patymjager #GabrielHawkeBk13 #procedural #oregonwilderness #murderinvestigations #thriller #suspense #actionadventure #friends ****review #militaryveterans #indigenouspeoples
Pati Jager has done it again with her latest Gabriel Hawke novel, Cougars Cache. She has included excellent descriptions of the beautiful areas in Wallowa County and Hell’s Canyon, Oregon. There is a lot of mystery concerning the very old human bones found which leads you through twists and turns until the end. As always there is humor and fun when it involves Hawke’s interactions with the ever present Dog. I really enjoyed the chapters describing the various events, dances, ceremonies and costumes in the powwow that Hawke, Dani and his family attended to reconnect with their indigenous roots. It is evident that Pati has done a lot of research with the Oregon State Troopers and indigenous tribes to enhance her accuracy. A throughly enjoyable book that you need to read.
I just love Ms. Jager’s books of Gabriel Hawke and the mysteries he solves. I don’t think I have ever figured out who the killer was in any of her books. She writes in such way that pulls me in as if I am there with Gabriel. I enjoy the scenery she describes and wish I could go see the scenery myself. This story was even more interesting as it entailed a double murder over 30 years ago along with a recent one that was connected to the other two. I always enjoy learning more about the Indian tribes and their traditions. This book took me on so many twists and turns that when I had to put the book down, I couldn’t quit thinking about it. I strongly encourage you to read book.
Another interesting murder mystery from this author. Lots of police procedural details in this book. Gabriel Hawke is a a wonderful character to follow. I love him. He is smart. He always manages to figure out who dun it. And, of course, his animals, especially Dog, his dog. His horse and his mule. Great companions.
I listened to the audio version of this book gifted to me by the author through Story Origin. Larry Gorman, the narrator, presents this murder mystery with distinction and class. He's easy to understand. He presents the plot and the beautiful country with clarity and respect. 5 stars for him as well.
This is definitely one of the best in this series. It really had me thinking about & guessing for most of book who actually was the culprit. I love that history not only of the area, but Hawk's past was woven throughout the book. I hope that more of his family history is brought into future books. Anyone who lives mysteries especially those set in the western part of the United States would love this series and especially this book. I highly recommend this book.
This was a most excellent read. I really enjoyed trying to guess whodunnit. Dog finds a bone which turns out to be a human bone and Hawke finds himself dealing with an old case of two murders. I also had a laugh at dog who was being terrorized by a Tom Turkey. Then there is Dani, I am hoping her and Hawke get married soon. Dani finally gets to go to a powwow and Hawke’s mother makes her a ribbon skirt. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it. I received an arc and the views and opinions are my own.
I have been a fan of Paty Jager for a good long time now, but this may be the best story she's written yet! Pulling at threads across decades, several cold cases become tied both to each other and to current activities. Meanwhile, Hawke is opening himself up more and more to his own roots. There's a lot going on and the pages kept turning themselves, as I had trouble putting the book down to go to sleep.
An enjoyable story reminiscent of CJ Box's Joe Pickett series. You can tell the author did her research and spoke with experts before writing law enforcement scenes, which I really appreciate. The author tends to include descriptions of daily tasks (eating, feeding the dog, etc) which isn't a bad thing. It's just a noticeable stylistic choice, so I wanted to mention it. This is my second book in her series and will definitely read more. The characters are interesting and the story well-written.
Gabriel Hawke is a fascinating man with a unique way of thinking. Another mystery for him to solve which he handles very well. I like the fact that bits of his history is revealed in each book and how we are made aware of the indigenous traditions.
I received a copy of the book from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.
I really enjoy reading Paty Jager books, they are interesting, and you can tell the research that went into them. I am a Gabriel Hawke fan and have liked that way he and Dani’s relationship has developed. Enjoyed reading about the POW POW and all that it involves and how it brings family together.
I love the narration of Larry Gorman, who brings the drama and action to your ears
Hawke finds himself dealing with an cold case of two murders. All due to a dog finding a human bone. There is humour with a turkey terrorising dog. Through in the Hawke's personal life with ,Dani who make a wonderful couple.
Her books are always a favorite of mine to read, Gabriel is a special person, loving his job, his heritage and solving a crime. Well written and the pages have you caught up in the story to the end. I highly recommend her books.
This was a good Cozy mystery. Easy to read Good story line and plot.
I enjoy reading the Gabriel Hawk books. Hawk is smart Can figure things out fairly quickly And is compassionate.I have recommended these books to friends and family.!
I loved this witty unpredictable haunting story filled with complex characters and lots of twists and turns, murder and mayhem. This tragic story kept me on the edge of my seat. I could not put this book down and cannot wait to read more by this author. this is a real page turner and a must read!
This was an entertaining, well-written book. It was interesting, fast-paced and held my attention. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more books by this author.
