This book zips along, with action and surprises on almost every page. If you want a fast-paced fantasy adventure this is for you.

The book's strength is its narrative which propels the reader forward from one adventure to the next. Because there is so much happening, there's little time given to description. Characters, adversaries, background stories are all quickly pencil-lined in with lots of adverbs and strong nouns. Much is left to the reader's own imagination, in the same way a fairy tale gives you the character and events and lets you fill in the details yourself.

The author writes that his inspiration comes from the landscapes of the Scottish highlands. This influence is definitely felt in the book's settings. Features such as caves, mounds, standing stones, cliffs and moorland abound and travellers shelter from the coarse weather in abandoned dwellings, huddled around a blazing campfire.

Wracked with a sickness in a ruined world, D'janyl meets an old man who in his last moments passes a very special stone, The Runestane, to D'janyl. Thus begins his adventure. Healed of his sickness, D'janyl begins a journey even though he has no idea what it's for. He meets and makes friends along the way and is hunted by an unknown enemy who is hell bent on stopping him from completing his quest. With many supernatural creatures and lots of action, D'janyl will need every bit of help he can get to survive long enough to reach his destination. Along the way he will find something he never dreamed of, possible romance and an affinity for animals. I myself am not a huge fan of sci-fi and this is definitely a sci-fi/fantasy book. It is well written, has a good flow, lots of action and good solid characters. My favorite character is actually a giant wolf named Shadow, who seems to show up whenever D'janyl is in trouble. With lots of supes and magic, this is sure to keep you interested, especially if you are a fan of fantasy/sci-fi. I would say that this book would appeal to those 17 and up only because of the need to really pay attention to the story. I don't know that a younger person would be able to follow it.

Runestane races along. Its packed with action fights, chases, magic and mystical creatures.

The characters are often out of the frying pan and into the fire, yet they do develop and draw you to them.

Fergal Nally's fantasy realm is his own blend of dark fantasy with original thought and a bit Celtic flavour. Its refreshingly different from much fantasy on the shelves.

The pace is such that you'll struggle to stop reading. It really bounces along! You'll remember many of the scenes for a long time afterwards.

I really enjoyed this book. There is never a dull moment, the pace is fast, the characters engaging and the story twists and turns with lots of surprises along the way. The language is visual and imagery very cinematic.
