When people are placing bets, maybe you’re not so straight after all.
Angel Barnett always assumed he was straight. Sure, he’d had an occasional fantasy about sex with a man. But he’d never contemplated having sex with two men, until he met Gideon Foster and Vihaal Petrovsky.
Now he can’t get them out of his head, and the casual friendship that’s developed between them is heading into unknown territory. It seems like everyone he knows, including his aging mother, has known for years he’s ‘not so straight’. And it turns out that Gideon and Vihaal have been deliberately trying to seduce him.
But they’re married, and Angel isn’t sure about sex with men to begin with. It only takes a few instances of physical intimacy with Vihaal and Gideon, who seem to live a very kinky life with few boundaries, for Angel to finally accept and start to explore his bisexuality.
But can Angel be a third to Vihaal and Gideon’s twosome? They seem to want him. But the two of them are kinky as hell so not only is Angel embarking on a same-sex relationship for the first time, he’s also being initiated into the kinky world of dominance and submission. And since Vihaal is a die-hard Dom, it looks like Angel had better get used to submission—a mindset that comes surprisingly easily.
Queer erotic romance. Incendiary encounters, stealthy romance, multiple genres. AE Lister is a Canadian non-binary/gender fluid author with a vivid imagination and a head full of unique and interesting characters. They write consent-based kink with a dash of romance.
A.E. Lister writes poly romances better than any author I know!
The Laughing Game is the third book in Listers standalone Parlor Games series, and they can be read in any order. Here's hoping there are a ton more coming in this fascinating world centered around the BDSM club Maverick Molly's.
The Laughing Game is told from Angel's point of view. Angel, who has been playing the field for awhile now, doesn't even realize how much he wants and needs a relationship, till he meets Vihaal and Gideon. Plus Angel also hasn't realized he's bisexual. (Gay awakening is another thing Lister writes so beautifully.) Angel's gradual realization of both his romantic and emotional needs is absolutely perfect, and I really enjoyed the way his character grows over the course of the story.
The other characters we come to know and love are the established couple of Vihaal and Gideon. These two are completely charming, and I've got my fingers crossed for more stories about these three fascinating guys.
Of course The Laughing Game is filled with all of the kinky, D/s fun Lister does so well. Plus, there are some marvelous scenes with the cast of Maverick Molly's. Heartfelt, emotional, warm, sexy, witty, and just plain fun - I hope you love this one as much as I did!
an ARC of The Laughing Game was provided by the author at my request for the purpose of my honest review
Beautiful read. Vihaal, Gideon and Angel were just charming. Watching Angel flourish as he explores this new side of himself of was wonderful.
These books are filled with such a kink positive view and I love that. It’s so realistic and shows the less seen side of kink that is lived. Sometimes something happens that’s out of your control and you have to safeword. Sometimes you’re introduced to something you never knew you liked. And sometimes you fall in love without even realizing it.
This has been a fantastic series. As always, Lister writes such lush characters and even with a single POV, I still felt like I got to know Vihaal and Gideon. Definitely recommended.
Rating: 4 Steam: 4 PoV: single, 1st person Genre: contemporary romance, MMM Tropes / tags: age gap, kink exploration, sexual discovery
I've loved the Parlor Games stories so far and this story was no exception - The Laughing Game was a fantastic read with a lot of explorations!
AE Lister writes kink extremely well, and I loved seeing Angel explore both his sexuality and kinks together with Vihaal and Gideon. Angel was so sweet and it was cute how he realised that he might not be as straight as he thought, while everyone else had pretty much already figured it out. There was a bit more humour in this one than I anticipated, and I had a great time reading about Angel and his men!
I really enjoyed Angel's journey of self-discovery, and the connection he found with Vihaal and Gideon was great. It was obvious that they'd had their eyes on Angel for quite a while and were hoping for more than something casual. I liked the three of them together, and even if Angel initially wanted to take things slow, it was easy to see how he lost himself a bit with these two and their explorations. There were some great and steamy scenes here, and I always love and appreciate how realistic the scenes and kinks are in AE Lister's stories.
The Laughing Game was another beautiful and enjoyable read from AE Lister, and I loved being back at Maverick Molly's! Angel, Vihaal and Gideon's story was a treat to read, and if you're looking for kink exploration and D / s dynamics with both spice and feels, I highly recommend checking out this series!
- Thanks to Gay Romance Reviews for the opportunity to read and review this book. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.
I love this addition to the Parlor Games series. The book is well-written, entertaining, and hot! I loved watching Angel’s journey, and the support he received from Gideon and Vihaal.
This was my first AE Lister book, but definitely won't be my last because I really enjoyed it!
This is book 3 in the Parlor Games series, but I didn't feel like I missed something jumping in and not reading the other books. But I will go back and read them now. We are back at Maverick Molly's to read about Angel, Gideon and Vihaal's story. Angel is an accountant, Gideon is a nurse and Vihaal owns an antique shop. They meet through the owners of Maverick Molly's. In a conversation with Jason and Sebastian, Angel finds out that Gideon and Vihaal have been trying to seduce him into a relationahip with them. Gideon and Vihaal have an unconventional marriage and are heavily into kink. Finding out about Vihaal and Gideon trying to seduce him prompts Angel to go on a little journey of self discovery and he discovers that he's not as straight as he thought he was. This comes as no surprise to anyone but Angel. Apparently he was giving off some type of vibes; his mom could even see it.
I really enjoyed Angels self discovery journey, how he really leaned into all of the exploration and didn't really shy away from anything. And what he did shy away from he knew he'd probably try out at a later date. I enjoyed all the honest conversations they had and how Gideon and Vihaal tried to ease him into the kink life.
The book is single POV, but I felt like we got to know the characters really well this way too. I enjoyed how their relationahip progressed and I really enjoyed the dynamic they had going on. I also enjoyed how Vihaal always took care of Gideon and Angel and did everything in a way that would make it enjoyable for them. I also really enjoyed when Gideon and Angel stepped up and took care of Vihaal. I really loved how smitten they all were with each other. Angel's mom was a very funny addition to the story.
I really enjoyed the book, the spice is really good and consistent, but I would have liked a bit more depth to the story. I felt like the kink exploration overshadowed the relationship building and feelings of the characters. This is not to say, that ai didn't feel the love between, because I really felt it.
Definitely check this book out if you enjoy low angst reads with kink exploration and celebration.
not really capturing my attention. i feel like this is one of the polyam books out there that focus more on the relationship between the two individuals in the trio
Angel is 36 and stunned that maybe the diners with the married couple Vihaal and Gideon weren’t friendly business diners but more ones where he got seduced. He’s freaking out, thought he was straight, maybe a tiny bit bi, but knows he has feelings too, also willing to expand his horizon.
“Then I was naked. Standing in a dedicated kink room with two hot and adventurous men, who were examining me like I was up for auction. I was a little scared, a little self-conscious, and a lot turned-on.”
Watching them explore their chemistry, and their connection, having hot scenes, role-playing, and bonding together was the best of the best. It was a dream come true. The adoration between the three of them brought me to tears. The good-natured humor and attitudes from all three were just the best. Again, it made me happy and emotional.
Oh my, oh my, I snickered hard, I swallowed my spit, I had to pick up my jaw, I blinked my eyes, I held my breath, it was all so amazingly delightful, the atmosphere jumped from cozy, to seductive, to an air full of desire, to dominance, to erotic, to sensual, to arousing sexy. Did I say the humor was grand?
Vihaal, who I completely fell in love with, was a Dom ‘pur sang’ dang I was sitting on the edge of the couch waiting for his next move, his next command, and his next dazzling smile. When he used the word ‘please’ (in a certain context I won’t spoil) I almost fainted!
This was a wonderful experience, I hugely enjoyed it! Applause! Easily a five-star winner!
I wish this club of AE Lister’s was real because it’s seems like it would be great fun to visit. This book has less to do with the club except for some marvelously kinky scenes in the private room there but it is where Gideon and Vihaal have been watching Angel as he comes to do the club’s books. I don’t like books where there is cheating and I wondered when I read in the blurb that Gideon and Vihaal are married but AE Lister has written this in a way that I had no problem with it because it’s made clear that they are interested in a triad situation. There are some rather funny scenes in this book that mostly center around how oblivious Angel is to his own leanings and that Gideon and Vihaal are interested in him to the point where they are having to get more and more obvious about showing their interest. Once he finally realizes what is happening the book heats up considerably and Ms Lister again gives us some intense scenes that still come across as very possible and realistic. I especially liked the scene where things are interrupted and the follow up to it is so well written that it had me crying for real. I also like how she has the guys not being 24/7 about the kink and the weaving in of their regular lives provides a nice counterpoint to those very hot encounters. I also really enjoyed what a nice relationship Angel has with his mom and how Ms Lister gives us a guy who loves his mom without being afraid to show it. His mom is an absolute hoot and is one of my favorite characters in the book. If II had to sum this book up I would say it has to be the sweetest kink book I have ever read.
I got a copy of this book through GRR and this is my honest review
**I received an electronic ARC through GayRomanceReviews. Thank you!**
AE Lister returns to the universe of Maverick Molly's with The Laughing Game. Though The Laughing Game is the third installment in the universe, the books are companion novels that could stand alone if desired. The Laughing Game follows accountant Angel who is beginning to wonder if he isn't quite as straight as he once thought. Married couple Vihaal and Gideon have been subtly expressing interest for quite some time and Angel is suitably wooed. Vihaal and Gideon aren't simply married men, but also involved in a kink lifestyle that they are quick to proclaim has room for Angel too.
My holdups and my praise remains the same for this installment as it did for book one. I enjoyed my time with Angel, Vihaal, and Gideon, but felt that the focus was more of an erotica type novel rather than a more in depth development of their relationship together. This leads, for me, to a more surface level attachment to the story with limited feelings invested. There were several instances introduced that would lead to more in depth character development (a minor health issue, an issue of embezzlement from the company that Vihaal owns), but the introduced conflict is rapidly band-aided so that the trio can get back to more intimate scenes. I think this is a stylistic choice which is fine for the novel, but contributed to me not having a higher enjoyment rating.
I was happy to have the time spent with The Laughing Game and with Maverick Molly's as a whole. I would not hesitate to read more from AE Lister.

It was nice to return to the atmosphere of Maverick Molly’s and the Bordello. Vihaal and Gideon are an established married couple who have developed an interest in Angel, an accountant and an acquaintance the two have met through Molly’s. Angel has always considered himself to be straight, but is discovering that may not be entirely true. As he is drawn into a relationship with both men, he discovers desires he had never realized, and an attraction to these two men, along with a desire to submit to Vihaal as part of their kink dynamic. Much of the book revolves around Angel and the developing relationship and exploration of his boundaries with these two men who have captivated his heart. There are a lot of creative sexual scenes woven seamlessly into the unfolding of the three getting to know each other, Angel discovering sides of himself, and all three finding out whether a polyamorous relationship can work for them long term, most revolving around Maverick Molly’s and the back room, the Bordello.
One of the most entertaining side characters is Angel’s mother, “Bridgett”. She is a hoot, funny and irreverent, but supportive of Angel in every way, and accepting of his two boyfriends.
This was an enjoyable read with three characters, each interesting and complex in their own right. The story kept me engaged and satisfied with the ending.
I received a copy of the book and this is my voluntary review.
This is the first book that I can recall reading by AE Lister and as this one is book number 3 in the series, I think I have done it a slight disservice. I haven’t read the previous books in the series and I don’t think that this works as well as it might do without all of that background.
That said, I found the dynamic between Angel, Vihaal and Gideon to be entertaining, sexy and on occasion, very sweet. Vihaal and Gideon are a married couple who occasionally indulge in adding a temporary third to their relationship. However, it becomes obvious that they have had their eye on Angel for a while and it quickly becomes apparent that this is not a temporary thing for any of them. Not least, because for Angel this is his first relationship with men.
I enjoyed the relationships and characters in this story, especially Angel’s mother who made me laugh a lot. The friendships were nicely written and the encouragement and acceptance was good to see/read. The sex scenes were hot and intense, and although I felt that occasionally there wasn’t enough attention paid to the fact that this was all new to Angel, the triad worked very well with Vihaal most definitely in charge with Angel and Gideon as his pets. I may see if I can read the previous books in the series.
So there's a lot that I liked about this one. The kink and heat is a 5 out of 5 for me. I think the scenes between Angel, Gideon, and Vihaal were very well done with Vihaal directing the other two. Vihaal and Gideon know each other very well as they're married but everything is new for Angel...including being with other men. I loved the scene where Vihaal feeds Angel. It was a really tender moment and these three worked together very nicely. It's always great to see good representations of poly relationships, and this definitely didn't disappoint there.
That being said, this is from Angel's POV and I will say that I just had a hard time connecting with him. I'm not sure what it was but there was something that just didn't click for me. It totally could've been the mindset I was in, but I felt that Angel kept giving me hot and cold vibes. Like he would mention wanting to go slow but then turn around and want to dive in. I felt a bit like I couldn't get a good read on him and that may be because Angel was discovering himself at the same time.
For me the story was a solid 4, heat a 5++. Gideon was my favorite character out of the three but I like them a bit sassy. Vihaal makes a great and caring Dom. Angel is a no longer clueless and a great addition to the established couple.
I have to say I don't know how I missed any other books in this series by the author but somehow I missed book 2.
I loved this book. I love how Angel was able to come to terms with himself and understand that he may have been wrong about himself. He was thinking differently for awhile but when a married couple ends up showing interest in him, he didn't understand it at first. The more he was told about them and what others viewed, he was putting it together. When Vihaal & Gideon finally take him out and he gets to experience just a little bit, he can't help but want more. He wants to explore with the two of them and see where things could go.
I love how Vihaal & Gideon bring Angel into their relationship. I love how all three of them connect and will basically do anything for each other. When one has a question or is unsure of things, they discuss it. I love how open they are with each other.
The author did an amazing job on this book and also all the kink positive. There is no shame and that is what the author makes sure of. Great job.

This is another book in the Maverick Molly series from A.E. Lister. I decided to give the series another try after my mixed feelings for Are You There Moriarty?. I was drawn to the idea of a poly relationship with one of the members finally exploring their sexuality. Unfortunately this style of book is just not for me. It is very much an erotica with a lot of time spent on intimate scenes. I enjoy the scenes and they are very well written which is why I’m giving this book three stars. The book is well-written and if you are looking for an erotic romance I would recommend this series and particularly this book. Unfortunately I like the buildup to the relationship more than the intimate scenes. Mentioned in the book are off the page scenes of dates and outings to build the relationship before they become intimate and that is my favorite part of romance stories. Give me the longing looks, the slow burn romance! If those scenes had been in the book rather than off the page, this would easily be a four or five star read for me. As it is it is a very well-written book that is just not to my tastes.
This was such a good story. A very different story with all the kink and bondage play but I was here for it.
Angel, Gideon and Vihaal were so damn adorable. From how they dated him and the sexy smut scenes, it was perfect. I love how long they were pining for Angel and when Angel found out, he was totally in shock.
When V got hurt, both guys catered to him, which he was not used to. Poor guy has been through it. I couldn’t stand his father or Dominic in how they were trying to sabotage his every move.
“Bridget” was hilarious and had me dying the first time she had met the guys. Her name ain’t even Bridget and I loved how she pretended to forget her memory. Too hilarious. She is definitely a favorite side character of mine.
I love that Angel, Gideon and V got their happily ever after.
I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.
I think this is my favourite so far, from the Parlor Games series. Something about this threesome really hit the mark for me. I love Gideon, and want him as a bestie IRL :) The kink scenes are among the saucier I've read so far in the series, and really brought alive the Bordello and Maverick Molly's. I always want more time in the Victorian Era-inspired establishment, with all its quirkiness, and this book really delivered on that. My favourite aspect of AE Lister's series, and indeed all the books of theirs I've read so far, is the inclusivity and acceptance. These worlds are a safe space. Of course, they don't shy away from the harshness of life. They aren't totally sugar-coated. But the good guys always come out on top (or bottom, or wherever the heck they want to be) and most importantly, they find their people. I always come away from this series really hoping that the people who are living diverse lives in the real world know the happiness and contentedness that AE Lister's characters do.
Angel jumps in to kink at the deep end... not only exploring his bisexuality but also the idea of polyamory and a D/s kink relationship. I love how the story shows us Angel, Gideon and Vihaal's strengths and weaknesses and also how exploring a relationship between the three men changes their outlooks and perspectives.
I love watching Angel open up to new experiences and how expressive he becomes. I also love what Vihaal and Gideon bring to the table and how their outlook and relationship with each other changes as they explore adding Angel as a third.
While this book does involve a staff member of the club, he's not a front of house staff and that too makes for an interesting dynamic.
If you like watching three men become a kinky poly family, you'll want to add this book to your TBR. It can be read standalone, but you do have more context if you read the Parlor Games series in order.
This is the first book I have read by the author so l went in a bit blind, but the premise and tropes of the book were right up there on what I enjoy reading, I read the book in a day. It was engaging, the characters were lovely and very diverse, but it felt a bit rushed. Angel may have been questioning his sexuality for months but falling into a relationship with a married couple was not on his mind, even if they might have had a bit to do with that question. Gideon is a breath of fresh air, full of light. Vihaal is full of power that makes Angel want to bend to please him. I did appreciate the author discussions about prep, kink, sexuality, but felt a bit more about health could have been covered. I will read other books in this series as well as other books by this author and recommend this book.

Angel, Gideon, and Vihaal were very delightful. As Angel delves into this new aspect of his personality, it's quite captivating to witness his growth. I adore how these books have such a kink-positive outlook. It portrays the less glamorous side of kink life and is quite realistic. There will be instances when you have to take a precaution because something beyond your control occurs. Occasionally, you're exposed to something that you discover you really enjoy. And it's possible to fall head over heels for someone you've never met. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series. I felt like I got to know Vihaal and Gideon even with just one point of view because, as usual, Lister crafts such vivid characters. Strongly suggested.I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.
This book features three incredibly memorable characters who blend to create a lovely and unique relationship. Angel stresses a bit over the realization that he's attracted to men, but I appreciated that once he decides to reciprocate his interest in Vihaal and Gideon, he's all in. The kink and polyamory aspects of this book may provide some pretty significant twists, but the core of the love story that develops is as solid as any other mainstream contemporary romance. Lister nicely balances a high-steam and low-angst storyline without ever making me feel like I'm reading erotica rather than a sweet, though nontraditional, romance.
Disclaimer: I received a digital review copy of this book from the author.
I loved the way that the author portrayed positive things about kink, sexuality, sexual health that is sometimes rare in other MM books I've read or it just wasn't discussed enough.
My only complaint/different takeaway: I hated in the very beginning how everyone basically had bets going and bombarded Angel about not being straight. They basically steamrolled over his own thoughts and I felt like it kind of pushed/rushed him into getting with Vi and Gideon. ----------------------- These three were soooooo good together though and I loved the way that Vi and Gideon taught Angel about kink and how to submit/express himself.

4.5⭐️ This is such an original series, I’ve enjoyed all the Parlor Games books. I’m a big fan of this author’s writing. It’s a rare thing to find that perfect blend of nuanced characters, authentic emotion, and kink that feels very grounded while also being wildly steamy. The setting is a personal favorite, so I especially loved the bits set in Maverick Molly’s. It’s an entirely unique vibe, the blend of contemporary and Victorian atmosphere is so cool and original. I really became attached to these characters, and this was a really well balanced poly romance. I loved seeing Angel embrace his connection to Vihaal and Gideon. Love this series!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
I have read other books by this author that I appreciated more than I did this book which was long and to me almost boring. I actually chose to read two other books while piecing away at this one. I cannot determine in my mind whether it was the long descriptions of kink that I did not appreciate (I am not adverse to some forms of kink) or whether it was the writing or something else that caused me to downgrade this read. The story is of a guy, Angel who initially seems the centre of the book who realizes attraction for a couple - Vihaal and Gideon and before the book ends the three are living together. Unfortunately, Angel is more a voyeur than a player.
Angel is just beginning to realize that he's attracted to men. Suddenly he's thrown for another loop when he finds out that he's being courted by a couple who routinely play with a third. Vihaal and Gideon have been interested in Angel for quite a while. Now he's navigating the new to him world of kink and while he finds it exciting and seems to take to it easily he also has some insecurities about where he fits in with the couple. The scenes between these three are some of the most scorching hot I've ever encountered. I really appreciated how well these men communicated with each other and how the world of kink was explored both safely and realistically.
I can't remember a book of this author that I haven't enjoyed. They are wells of body, sex and kink positivity and this book is no exception. The scenes in the Bordello are hot and insightful. I felt like the relationship progression could have been paced a little better. With one of them being so new to this experience I felt like they were rushing into things at some times. Compared with the other books I felt this one was a little more shallow. Nonetheless I enjoyed reading it and look forward to the next book in the series.
This is the third book in the Parlour games series and it is another really good read. I really liked Angel and liked Vihaal and Gideon together and enjoyed watching the three of them forming a relationship together and watching Angel’s own journey with not being so straight and being a third to an established couple but also he was new into the world of kink and D/s relationships as well but with a lot of support he really flourished and I enjoyed reading this well written story about his and Gideon and Vihaal’s journey together. Looking forward to reading what comes next.
I absolutely love AE's writing style and have read all their books. This series is beyond exceptional I just love it! So well written with brilliant character development. This book is a straight to gay trope for Angel who has never had a same sex relationship before but finds Vihaal and Gideon both so captivating. Both Vihaal and Gideon want Angel but realise that not only is being gay new to him they also have to initiate him into their kinky world of dominance and submission. So hot! Loved following them as they build their triad! I received a free arc copy and this is my honest review.
The stunning cover for this one drew me right in and I'm so glad it did. Angel's decision to open up to trying things with Gideon and Vihaal took real courage on his part because not only was he exploring a relationship with not one man but two and those two had a relationship that was far from vanilla. The author did a wonderful job of showing all the feelings Angel went through from confusion, to hesitation, to excitement to enthusiasm. We get to watch all three of these characters test their boundaries and learn an immense amount about themselves.
Beautiful and kinktastic with amazing characters. A first person POV book usually puts me off but this story was so well written I didn't feel like anything was missing. This story is all about exploration, it's sweet, caring and so spicy. Angel, Gideon and Viheal worked so well together in more ways than just the bedroom. The way these two support Angel on his journey of self discovery could not have been written any better. I would absolutely recommend.
