A suspense story with characters that are easy to love and humbling elements of faith that inspire and satisfy? I’m in! “Justice Delayed” is all the above and more. I cared for and believed these characters and rooted for a good outcome.
The characters: I love the unique names, Melender and Brogan, and this hero and heroine surprised me in many ways. Trying to overcome less than ideal pasts, these two captured me quickly and I rooted for them to overcome their unique hurdles.
The romance: I just adore a slow-burning romance.
The suspense: So many twists and turns kept me up way into the night. It’s difficult to put this book down. And the ending…wow!
The elements of faith, forgiveness, and truth wrap this story up so nicely. I’m new to this author’s work, and I’m an insta-fan.

Melender Harman is an ex-convict who becomes an unwitting celebrity after conking a robber on the head with a soda bottle. Her attempts to live a quiet life after her release from prison are successful until she does that one fatal good deed. But she’s a praying woman. Does that mean she’s innocent of the crime she paid for in prison? Can she prove it?
Brogan Gilmore, a disgraced reporter reduced to working at a small newspaper in the DC suburbs, stumbles onto something bigger when covering a convenience store robbery. With the blessing of his editor, Brogan pursues a new angle to the story but must balance different desires: cracking the story, fending off Melender’s revenge-hungry family members, enjoying the young woman’s company, and, most importantly, pleasing the Lord.
Author Sarah Hamaker spins a suspenseful deeper than the average page-turner, portraying Melender and Brogan as multi-dimensional human beings rather than cookie-cutter heroes. Hamaker’s descriptions sparkle and delight. Block off plenty of reading time because you will want to read Justice Delayed from start to finish, whatever you have scheduled.
Melender Harman has had a rough life, with her grandmother who was taking care of her dying and then having to move to live with her Aunt Ruby and Uncle Quentin. She knew from the beginning that she wasn’t welcome in their home, but she had no other options so tried to make the best of a bad situation. When her baby cousin Jesse disappears, Melender is accused of kidnapping and killing him and her nightmarish life gets worse. Melender spends seventeen years in prison for the crime and now she has returned to town and is determined to discover what actually happened to baby Jesse because she knows that she did not harm him. Enlisting the support of reporter Brogan Gilmore, a man who is more than a little leery about her claims of innocence, Melender sets out to methodically discover the truth. This book is a fast-paced quest for truth and justice, with a lot of suspects along the way who threaten both Brogan and Melender. In addition to being a great suspense novel, it is also one with a heartfelt foundation of faith as Melender depends on the faith she learned from her grandmother Sudie to get her through her stint in prison and now through all the suspicion that she is facing in the town that she has returned to. The characters are dynamic and if they are not all lovable, they are all totally believable. My favorite character was Brogan, a man not afraid to champion the underdog. I did not like Melender’s cousins Jared at all, a smarmy druggie who not only doesn’t tell the truth, he doesn’t see any reason to do so. This book made it easy to pick favorite characters and those who were immediate suspects although I had to wait for the intricate threads to reveal what really happened and why. Masterfully crafted and totally mesmerizing, this is a story that would lend itself to a good book for a group discussion and it is definitely a thought-provoking novel with a theme of forgiveness and a forward look to the future. Is she just conniving and convincing or is she really innocent. Join Sarah as she unravels this mystery. Great read and and definitely recommend!
With every new release, you can't help but like this author's works more and more. As soon as I finished reading Justice Delayed, I was itching to get my hand on the next installment already. An ex-convict and a washed up investigative reporter goes on a quest for truth and Justice, but along the way, they must fight against the dangers that are preventing them to achieve their purpose. Because what this party is looking for is what the other party is preventing them from getting by all means. I highly recommend this book to everyone who is looking for a good romantic suspense.
As one of the members of Justice Delayed Street team, I received an advanced copy of this book from the author, but the words are mine.
This is a good inspirational romantic suspense where both of the main characters have issues from their past that must be dealt with. In Melender's case, she was wrongly accused and convicted of murder. In Brogan's case, he made a journalistic mistake that temporarily ruined his career. Both have a great deal at stake as the old murder is re-investigated.
The characters are well presented and I found myself rooting for them as they worked to find the truth. Melender was intriguing with her origin in the hills and her knowledge of historical folk songs from the area. The plot moves along at a good pace and centers around uncovering family secrets, secrets the wealthy can pay to have hidden. The novel also explores the influence the wealthy can have on the justice system. Potential readers should be aware that the plot includes infant death, a possible trigger situation.
I liked this novel. I think it is the first I've read my Hamaker and I will be looking for more.
I received a complimentary egalley of this book through Celebrate Lit. My comments are an independent and honest review.
“Sometimes, the path to redemption takes some strange turns,” she said softly.
“Brogan, I believe with all my heart God graciously put me in circumstances designed to strengthen my faith.”
Where do I start gushing about Delayed Justice by Sarah Hamaker? I totally identified with Melender, the 35-yr-old woman, who claims complete innocence of the heinous crime of which she’s been tried, convicted, and served her complete sentence. I also totally understood the thoughts of the disgraced, reformed investigative reporter, Brogan Gilmore, who agrees to help Melender for his own gain. Yet, as he investigates the past with her, more doubts, dangers, and inconsistencies arise. Is this woman he’s falling in love with, as innocent as she claims?
At times, due to Hamaker’s skillful and honest characterizations, I even felt empathy and sympathy for each of the angry, vindictive family members who want nothing more than to ruin the rest of Melender’s life. What amazed me, though, is Melender’s ability to forgive. Grandmother Sudie, long dead, is a veritable influence for Jesus’s perfect forgiveness that Melender clings to in prison and lives out. “Child, when we allow anger over wrongs done to us to take root in our hearts, we’re saying to God Almighty that crimes committed against us are worse than crimes committed against Jesus. Our crimes against Jesus were nailed to the cross. How can we hang on to unforgiveness when our Savior does not?” I understand these words in my head. I have repeated them, and used them in my own life. But… could I really draw on His power to employ them against such extreme evil done against me by those that should have my best interest at heart?! I am challenged to check my heart against the little foxes, so if there ever is a time when something this extreme were to happen, it will require no big change in my heart.
Life lessons, drama, fear, ( um, terror, should I say) very even pacing of suspense all the way through the novel had me enthralled. I only put down the book when life forced my hand. This was my first Sarah Hamaker novel, but I am thrilled to see it is also the first in its series! Hamaker’s combination of all the above factors with glorious reminders of life-changing truth could easily elevate romantic suspense to one of my fave categories!! Well done, Ms. Hamaker!!
Fave secondary character? The already passed away great-grandmother Sudie for her great wisdom, and spiritual admonitions given with heaping helpings of love and approval!
I received a copy of the book from Celebrate Lit. I also bought my own copy. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

“Find a young man who loves the Lord more than he loves you, and you won’t go wrong.”
“It was for my good and His eternal glory that I went to prison for a crime I didn’t commit. That didn’t mean I gave up trying to find justice in this world. It meant I didn’t despair when justice didn’t come.”
“life isn’t fair, especially to those who haven’t the ability to ensure an equal playing field.”
“Child, just when you think the Almighty has forgotten about our needs, He sends someone or something to remind us of His provision and His promise to never leave us nor forsake us. You remember that when you feel abandoned by Him.”
Sarah Hamaker is an author that I have heard many wonderful things about over the last couple of years and instantly her books made it on my ever growing TBR list, purchasing as many as I can. When I heard of Ms. Hamaker’s latest, Justice Delayed, I was instantly drawn to the storyline. I knew I needed to read it ASAP and I was not disappointed! Justice Delayed tells the story of Melender, a woman who recently got out of jail accused of murdering her baby cousin, Jesse, when she was a teen who is trying to clear her name since her release and Brogan, a newspaper reporter, who is trying to get back in Journalism’s good graces after ruining his reputation by not thoroughly investigating his sources before print. Melender enlists the help of Brogan to look at her case and to find justice for Jesse. As Brogan and Melender begin going through the layers and clues of the case, they stumble into a web of deceit that is too tangled to unravel. As the web of deceit becomes unraveled, its becomes too dangerous and deadly for those secrets the web exposes.
Just Delayed is the first book I have read from Sarah Hamaker, but it will not be the last book I read by Ms. Hamaker! To me, Ms. Hamaker’s Christian Romanic Suspense puts her in the ranks of the greats like Patricia Bradley, Coleen Coble, Irene Hannon, Dee Henderson, and Lynette Eason, to name a few. Justice Delayed is a gritty, rollercoaster read that makes you think you’re in the middle of a Criminal Minds episode, and at the same time, keeping Christ at the heart of the story. There were many times while reading Justice Delayed that I was so shocked at what was going on in the story that I would audibly say, “AHH!”, “WHOA!”, or “Oh, my!”. A book doesn’t usually do that to me, but Justice Delayed sure did! I admired Melender and what she went through. I am in awe of Melender’s strength and how she held onto God during her time in prison. I appreciate Brogan’s approach to discovering what truly happened to Jesse and commend him for wanting to dot every I and cross every T while searching for the truth. Not only did Melender teach those around her how to forgive, but Melender taught me that lesson at well. While I was rooting for justice for Jesse, my heart broke for the damage—emotional, mental, and physical—his murder imposed on Jesse’s loved ones. If you are looking for a read that has it all—greed, envy, murder, romance, suspense, redemption, and forgiveness while keeping Christ at the forefront of those seeking justice, then I highly recommend Justice Delayed by Sarah Hamaker!
Have you read Justice Delayed? What did you think of the book? What book by Sarah Hamaker should I read next?
Thank you to Sarah Hamaker for giving me a copy of Justice Delayed to review, for letting me be on the Justice Delayed Launch Team, and for helping gather information for this post. I had a blast! All thoughts and opinions are my own. My review is also on Amazon and my blog, Leslie's Library Escape.
Oh wow, what an awesome romantic suspense novel. This was my first book by Sarah Hamaker and I just loved it. I was drawn in from the first page and was completely engrossed in the story. I've learned that I am a huge fan of books where there has been a miscarriage of justice. I have such sympathy for the character and want to see justice prevail. This is one of those books. Melender Harman recently finished a 17 year prison sentence, accused of murdering her one year old cousin. However, she has maintained her innocence from the very beginning. Brogan Gilmore is a journalist who made some really bad decisions in the past, but is determined to do the right thing and become a respected jounalist. He and Melender meet when he is working on a story where she had helped stop a robbery in a convenience store she was cleaning. Due to various circumstances they end up working together to find the truth of what happened to her cousin. We see the story mainly from Melender and Brogan's points of view; however those aren't the only points of view. And being able to see from other points of view helps the reader to realize there was definitely something else going on, though the mystery of what exactly happens remains til almost the end of the story. There were definitely a bunch of twists I didn't see coming, even though I had suspicions about other details. There was also quite a bit of suspense as Melender and Brogan are targetted because they are digging up stuff from the past that certain people are determined remain hidden. And I loved seeing their relationship change as they worked together. The author did a wonderful job making me fall in love with these main characters. Melender's situation really tugged at my heart as she had gone through so much. But still, she held on to the faith her great-grandmother instilled in her. Speaking of her great-grandmother, I loved the little glimpses into her simple past life on the mountain and the way the author brought folk music into the story. This was an awesome first book of the series and I can't wait to read more. But don't worry, even though this is the beginning of a series, this story had a satisfying conclusion with no cliffhanger. This is definitely a book I highly recommend. I received an ARC of this book as a member of the launch team and was not required to write a favorable review. These are my own honest thoughts.
This was such a good book. The suspense and mystery were well-played. The two main characters were not your normal run-of-the-mill characters. There are no superheroes here, just a meek and humble 35 year old woman who had suffered a terrible miscarriage of justice and a journalist on the search for a story who soon realizes how important truth in reporting may be and finds his faith again.
Melender Harman has just finished her entire 17 year prison sentence for the disappearance of her cousin, Jesse. She was not guilty of this crime, but she served her sentence with dignity and grace. She has now been thrust into the spotlight once again when she single-handedly takes down a would be robber, which is how she meets journalist, Brogan Gilmore. He comes to interview her about her rescue, and then learns her true identity.
After speaking with Melender he sees a different side to the story that was reported 17 years ago, as he sees a young woman who actually be completely innocent. The further they dig, the more dangerous the situation becomes, which shows that someone wants the truth covered up and will do anything to stop it from coming to light. The poisonous secrets and lies from that fateful night have been buried and now as things come to light, these secrets threaten to boil over.
Brogan learns so much more than just a story from Melender. One of my favorite quotes is when she defends her action of true forgiveness to him, "It was for my good and His eternal glory that I went to prison for a crime I didn't commit. That didn't mean I gave up trying to find justice in this world-it meant I didn't despair when justice didn't come." Wow! What a lesson in forgiveness and letting go of bitterness which in turn provided a peace that cannot be matched. She never allowed bitterness to take hold of her heart. Brogan then uses his pen as a weapon giving credence to the old saying that the "pen is mightier than the sword".
Greed, politics and outright evil are a part of story, but the truth and goodness shine through it all as the walls start crumbling down, and you learn what truly happened that night. This was one of the best inspirational suspense books that I have read in quite some time. It left an impression on me, even if the message came from a fictional character.
Thank you to the author for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
"Nineteen years ago, my brother's only child - Melender Harman - killed my son Jesse."
Having served a seventeen prison sentence for a crime that she didn't commit, Melender Harman is slowly and quietly trying to re-imagine life on the outside, working night shifts for a cleaning service while she contemplates how to uncover the truth of what really happened on the night Jesse Thompson disappeared. On one such evening, Melender interrupts a convenience store robbery and is hailed as a hero, the incident bringing her into contact with journalist Brogan Gilmore who is instantly intrigued with the beautiful, reclusive woman, and against his better judgement agrees to help her review the Thompson case.
"Child, when we allow anger over wrongs done to us to take root in our hearts, we're saying to God Almighty that crimes committed against us are worse than crimes committed against Jesus. . . . How can we hang on to unforgiveness when our Savior does not?"
This particular dive into "delayed justice" is brimming . . . . no, actually overflowing . . . with the kinds of unexpected discoveries that can be universally attributed to cover-ups, pay-offs, and ulterior motives. Expertly cast, and with perfectly pitched plotting, this story moves with an elegance that belies its subject matter. And what I loved the most? Deep within its core strums the steady heartbeat of Brogan's determination to find the truth, tempered with Melender's cautious trust in his ability to do so.
Robbery. A disappearance. Betrayal. Lying. People on the run. All of the makings for this fast-paced suspenseful page turner! Brogan Gilmore, the defamed journalist, is looking for his next big story. Three robberies later, he meets Melender Harman. He sure does not know what he is getting into when their paths cross. Melender is convicted of killing her cousin, when she has denied it. What is the truth? Has she been framed? Melender and Brogan join forces to obtain the real evidence needed to prove what happened to baby Jesse. As they are digging deeper into Melender’s family, lies are uncovered. Someone wants them to remain silent and they will do whatever it takes to keep the truth covered. As Mrs. Haymaker weaves this story, she develops the characters in a fine way that you want them to be your best friends and you are rooting for them. The thing I loved the most was the strong faith of Melender. After serving 17 years in prison for something she said she did not do, her faith remains strong and not shaken. The story is developed in a way that you do not figure out who the guilty culprit is to the end and this is a hard task for lots of writers of suspense to not reveal clues early on. I would highly recommend this book to readers of mystery and suspense. Be prepared to not put it down because it keeps you on the edge of your seat and you just have to have more. I was given an ARC of this book and these are all my opinions.
The beginning of the story sent shivers down my spine. The murder of a child is not easy to read about. When the author introduces Melender I had mixed feelings at first. Being convicted of the murder did raise questions for me. Her life behind bars must have been pure torture. It has been said that if you have been convicted of killing a child, you probably need to watch your back in prison at all times.
Melender is now trying to put the pieces back together of her life while determined to prove her innocence. I started to see a softer and vulnerable side to Melender as she spent every day working hard and never giving up. Her faith is what has gotten her through all those years behind bars. Without her sweet great grandmother I don’t think she would be as strong as she is.
Brogan sure has messed up his career as a journalist. Now that he has been given a second chance he intends to be honest and above board with his writing. His encounter with Melender opens the door for them both to learn to trust and see justice served. The author does a good job of slowly building their relationship while keeping the focus on clearing Melender’s name. With twists, secrets and danger the author had me glued to the book. Oh I had my suspicions about who was guilty, but I couldn’t wait to find out what would happen next in this edge of your seat story.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
Talk about family dysfunction and drama. This story had that in spades. So many secrets and underhanded deals were flowing through this family's dynamic. And that is not even the worst of it. The fact there is a little boy who is gone, and his young cousin has taken the blame in what appears to be a massive cover up makes the title of this story fitting.
Melender, an unusual name, is finally out of prison after serving her time of seventeen years in jail. How she survived that nightmare is a miracle, especially since she was convicted as a baby killer, but only with circumstantial evidence. However, she is out now and just trying to keep low, but her family will not let her. The harassment and the threats begin anew. Since Mel is innocent of the charges she gets help from an unlikely source. An investigative reporter, Brogan Gilmore, who fell from grace, is willing to help her look into the closed case. But there are some who will stop at nothing to keep the truth buried and the blame solely on Melender.
This was a riveting read that showed faith and forgiveness in action. I don't know that many of us would have been able to survive like Mel did.
I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.
I have come to truly enjoy Christian Romance Suspense novels. Justice Delayed by Sarah Hamaker is Book 1 in The Seeking Justice series. I have become very familiar with Sarah Hamaker over the last couple of years and I was excited to see a new series.
WOW, I was reeled into the book from the very first pages and could not put it down. Brogan Gilmore is trying to recover his Journalism career when he meets Melender Harman. Melender was relased from jail a few months prior after serving 17yrs. Brogan wants to tell Melender's story of possibly being innocent of the crime that she served for, murder of a toddler. Melender really wants to know the truth about what happened to her toddler cousin and who really committed the crime. I really LOVE how the author brings the 2 together to help one another with their struggles in life. Brogan really wants to believe she is innocent of the murder charges and wants to get the story right. Danger comes to the pair as they start to uncover some things that others don't want them to find out. I really LOVE how Brogan and Melender's relationship grew throughout the book. So much suspense and romance throughout the storyline. The Twist and Turns in this book are soo exciting and kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the book. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Romance Suspense. GREAT BOOK!
Wow, just wow! This well-written suspense story kept me turning the pages to learn the truth behind a baby's death that occurred nineteen years ago. Melender Hamilton was convicted of her cousin's murder and served her full prison sentence but was she truly guilty? Will she ever convince others that she wasn't involved in baby Jesse's death?
Author Sarah Hamaker shares a riveting tale of greed, deception, and a father's misguided protection but she buffers it with goodness, forgiveness, and the power of faith. Justice Delayed is a multi-layered story with relatable characters and a cornucopia of twists, turns, and sinister motives, along with a slow-burning but tantalizing romance between Melender and the journalist who senses that justice has been denied. This emotional and thought-provoking story reminded me that our justice system is often fallible and that our society has a hard time forgetting the past.
Grab a copy of Justice Delayed if you're looking for suspense and intrigue that catapult you into an ending that you didn't see coming! Hamaker is a new-to-me author who's now joined my list of must-read authors!!
I received a complimentary digital ARC from the author. There was no expectation for a positive review. These are my own opinions.
Justice Delayed is a fun suspense novel and part of a full-throttle suspense series that you’re going to want to check out. If you’re looking for a good novel to read while home alone at night this is it (or not if you scare easily).
Melender was accused of murder. She served her seventeen-year sentence. And now she’s out. She’s going to find out what really happened. Along for the ride is a fallen-from-grace journalist. Can the two of them team up and figure this out? Or will they get caught up in something bigger?
I love how complex the characters are. Obviously, they have issues and things to work through. They’re not perfect. And yet they are wonderfully flawed and you find yourself falling in love with them.
Be warned. This is one of those books you have to keep reading. You’re not going to be able to put it down once you start reading. And know that you’re emotions are going to come into play here and keep you enthralled.
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.
There are only a few authors I read that are in the romantic suspense genre, mainly because they're able to balance out the romance and suspense in their novels. I often don't pick up books from new-to-me authors in the genre because the plots tend to be weak, predictable, ninety percent romance and about ten percent suspense.
Sarah Hamaker is a new-to-me author, and Justice Delayed is the first novel I've read from her. It's romantic suspense and I probably would've ignored it if it hadn't been recommended by my book club.
Boy, am I glad they recommended it. The romance and suspense elements were balanced out really well, and the storyline was believable, well-paced, and the suspense kept me turning the page. I finished the book in only a few days. A very enjoyable read, and the closer I got to the end, I still wasn't able to predict the outcome. I love it when that happens.
I gave it four stars instead of five, because I felt like it could've used another chapter or two to wrap it up. However, I think this is book 1 in the series, so I'm hoping some of book one will roll over into book 2.
Regardless of if it does or not, Sarah Hamaker has a new fan. I highly recommend Justice Delayed and looking forward to reading more from this author.
“Sometimes, the path to redemption takes some strange turns.”
I can easily visualize this book playing out as a drama on the screen. The mystery and the multiple perspectives. A reporter, a grieving family, our heroine who has served over a decade and a half on the charge of murder, nefarious men for hire, and more.
This was a thorough, investigative novel with a strong slow burn thread of romance. I appreciated the strong Christian theme also. Ex convicts aren’t generally my typical cup of tea, but this novel really pulled me in. The historical and cultural connections, the familial ties and disruptions, the ethics of journalism, and so much more. It definitely challenged my faith with the Christian treatment of those who have served their time. I was rightly convicted. It’s so easy to fall into cultural traps and mindsets. I loved how this book laid things out so thoroughly and completely. It was a wonderful read that kept me thinking and attempting to solve the mystery. I’m excited to read more from this author.
I received an ARC of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Justice Delayed is a terrific start to The Seeking Justice series. Melender Harman (Mel) having completed her sentence for murder and Brogan Gilmore, disgraced investigative journalist, are some of the most interesting characters that I've encountered. I found them both really likeable. Obviously, there's a lot more to their stories, but no spoilers. I enjoyed reading about the faith of both of them. Author Sarah Hamaker is a skilled craftsman with words. She pulled me into the story, made me truly care about her characters, and even have some sympathy towards some of the villains. The plot has twists like a windy mountain road. There is a very satisfying conclusion to the story. I would definitely read more of this series as it comes out and more of this author's other works. I highly recommend this to readers of clean and of Christian romantic suspense and mysteries and also to those interested in folk music. I received a complimentary copy and am sharing my opinion of this very well-written and exciting book.
Justice Delayed, the first book in The Seeking Justice series, features wrongly convicted Melender (Mel) Harman who, after serving 17 years in prison, tries to clear her name with the help of Brogan Gilmore, a determined investigative reporter who is seeking to revive his career as well as find justice for Mel. The skillfully plotted, absorbing story kept me turning the pages to see what happened next and kept me emotionally invested in the story. The characters are well-crafted and relatable. The budding romance between Mel and Brogan enhances the suspense-filled plot. I appreciate the meaningful faith themes, and I love how secondary characters Nolan and Coleen live out their faith in trying to help Mel. I totally enjoyed this unputdownable read. It is one of the best romantic suspense books I have read this year. I look forward to reading the next book in the series. I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher with no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Justice Delayed by Sarah Hamaker is the first book in The Seeking Justice Series. This is a well written, easy to read story that is fast paced, and filled with action, suspense and mystery. Melender has served time for supposedly killing her young cousin and is now back in town trying to get on with her life. When journalist Brogan sees her working, he sets out to find out the real story behind the young boy's death. This is a heart wrenching story that grabbed my attention right away and held it to the very end. The author has done a fantastic job of writing the story that deals with loss and family secrets.
As Melender and Brogan dig into death and family, she finds out just how vindictive her aunt is. She also find herself with no place to live and no one to turn to but Brogan. This story has a mixture of wonderful character and people you'd never want to meet. This makes for an interesting story that held my attention to the very end and totally surprised me.
I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this story, this is my honest review.
Justice Delayed by Sarah Hamaker is a Romantic Suspense novel. Brogan Gilmore, a reporter, suffers from a fall from grace after taking a shortcut on a story. Now, he is working to rebuild his career ethically. A chance encounter with Melender Hartman allows him to redeem his career.
Melender Hartman, recently released from prison, served all seventeen years for a crime she did not commit. She sets out to discover what happened to her cousin, a toddler all those years ago. Brogan agrees to help her investigate. As the two navigate secrets, danger, and more, they find more than they bargained for initially.
The author takes the reader on twists and turns. The characters are well-developed. I loved getting to know the characters and seeing how the author developed the storylines. I would love to read more about Melendez, her family, and her future.
So, if you are looking for a Romantic Suspense novel, check out Justice Delayed by Sarah Hamaker/
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
Sometimes, the path to redemption takes some strange turns.
Imagine being charged with a crime that you did not commit and spending the next 17 years in prison! That is the experience of our heroine Melender. Her late night job protected her from most unnecessary questions, but that was about to change with her heroism in thwarting a robbery at her place of employment.
Brogan is an investigative reporter, or at least he was until he took liberty with his sources, making his findings questionable. Starting over was difficult for both of our well developed characters. Would her innocence finally be proven and would he manage to redeem himself by printing a story that was completely true?
This book was impossible to put down as I was rooting for Mel and wondering if the mystery of what happened to Jesse would finally be solved. An early copy of this book in The Seeking Justice Series was received through the author. These impressions are my own and were in no way solicited.
Brogan is a reporter with an unscrupulous past, and Mel is a woman who was convicted (and served time) for her baby nephew’s murder. All along, Mel proclaimed her innocence. Brogan and Mel team up to uncover the truth about little Jesse’s murder, and as the book goes on, the two of them grow attracted to one another.
I believed Mel right away, that she didn’t actually murder her little cousin. What I wasn’t so sure about is if she was in on it somehow, like maybe she was the insider for a kidnap-for-ransom that went wrong.
I loved trying to figure out the truth before Brogan and Mel and Aunt Ruby (Jesse’s mom) did. It’s a great mystery in that respect!
I’ll leave it to future readers to find out whether or not Brogan and Mel actually get together, but I will say it was a fun read relationship-wise, and also, since this is a Christian novel, there aren’t any spicy scenes.
Overall, five stars, romantic suspense readers will love it!
Justice Delayed by Sarah Hamaker is the first actual book I’ve read of hers. I’d read a novella in a collection of Christmas stories so I was interested in reading more of her works.
I was not disappointed. I admit it took me a bit to get into it as I could tell it would be involved and knowing where the story might lead I was hesitant.
Brogan is a disgraced reporter who takes on an investigation and digs into Mel or Melender after realizing she has a prison record and there might be more to the story. Melender enlists his assistance looking for the truth, knowing she is innocent and intending to prove it.
Sarah tells the story in a way that your not sure exactly who is responsible and who might be behind it all. I will definitely be reading more of her books.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher, and this is my honest review.
I have been looking forward to this one, and it certainly did not disappoint. Loved the two main characters, Melander and Brogan. Both had issues - hers obviously being imprisoned for a crime she did not commit, and he with his unethical issues years before.
I was tempted several times to skip to the end of the book to find out what really did happen to Jesse, and who was guilty.....but I managed to not do that, and read the story in the order it was written. There were a few surprises, and a lot of suspense and attempts by the bad guys to scare Brogan and Melander off from investigating.
Faith played a big part in the story, as did forgiveness. Melander could have been very bitter and angry, especially when all the truth came out, but she chose to forgive.
This was a very enjoyable suspenseful read, and I am looking forward to more books in this series.
Justice Delayed” by Sarah Hamaker is the first book in the series. This book is an inspirational romance suspense. Both the male and female character has passed issues that they must deal with. As far as my myself I definitely would rather have the issues Brogan had to overcome, I would not want to go to jail for a crime that I didn’t comment. This book is about family secrets and what a person with money can do to make the justice system turn out in their favor. This book can be and was a trigger for me)for someone that lost a child, even if the child was an infant and (mine was a adult). Even with that trigger I had to keep reading because my mind keep saying why and who. This book is a long book, but it did move at a fast pace.
I’m waiting patiently for book two.
I received a complementary copy from the author and Celebrate Lit and these opinions are my own.
I've never read any books by this author, and boy was I missing out! I love the way the story was written and I loved the variety of characters she included. Melender was my favorite character by far because even though she had spent 17 years in jail for something she didn't do, she wasn't bitter about it and she didn't lose her faith (it actually had gotten stronger!) As she and Brogan (a reporter) dig into the crime that she was convicted of, they discover that someone doesn't want the closed case looked into ...especially when Melender has already been convicted for it.
With unexpected twists and turns, I found it almost impossible to put down - definitely a 5 star book and I would give it more if I could!
I was given this book to read and review - all opinions are my own.
