Deutsche Ansprache: Ein Appell an die Vernunft
Thomas Mann war nicht unbedingt dafür bekannt, sich politisch eindeutig zu positionieren – bis die NSDAP bei den Reichstagswahlen im September 1930 mit knapp 20 Prozent der Stimmen zweitstärkste Kraft wurde. Einen Monat später hielt er seine mutige Ansprache als »Appell an die Vernunft«, in der Hoffnung, dass sich alles doch noch zum Guten wenden ließe.
In seinem Nachwort stellt Jens Bisky heraus, in welcher Situation Mann sprach, wie auf die Ansprache reagiert wurde, und zieht Parallelen zu Bürgerlichkeit und Vernunft heute.

Leider ein passender Moment das zu lesen. Das Nachwort ist sehr hilfreich, um den Text im Kontext zu situieren und einen kritischen Blick auf den Text zu werfen. Es ist schade, dass das deutsche Bürgertum sich nicht stark genug, wie von Thomas Mann vorgeschlagen, mit der Sozialdemokratie verbunden hat.
