In the early ‘90s, the low-budget slasher CLASS OF ’93 is released to scathing reviews and fan indifference. Its cast of young and up-and-coming actors and actresses, hopeful for a hit, watch their “big breaks” fizzle. Although the movie seems destined to be forgotten, it soon gains a cult following through late night screenings and VHS rentals. When hip director wunderkind, Taryn Quint, announces her plans to make a sequel to the picture, the original cast and crew is contacted to reprise their roles. With a larger budget, a marquee director at the helm, and a pop princess in the cast, expectations are high. Struggling actor, Mace Hunter, sees the movie as a do-over…a chance to once again make his mark in the industry and to forget the painful lessons he learned at the hand of the first film’s director. But not everyone is happy about the new movie. It isn’t long before Taryn receives threatening messages urging her to abandon the film. And then the murders begin. As the cast and crew are butchered one-by-one, the survivors try to stay alive long enough to discover who would kill to stop the SEQUEL.

Think of Sequel as the marriage of Scream 3’s movie-within-a-movie concept and the “high school reunion” angle of movies like Slaughter High.

Back in the 90s, a slasher was made called Class of ’93. It was a huge flop then, but has since gained a cult following. So reuniting the cast for a sequel ten years later seems like a great idea Only someone doesn’t want this sequel—or its masked killer—resurrected from the dead….

Now that’s how you formulate a slasher. Mark delivers all the slasher staples and self-aware banter you could hope for—after all, these characters all starred in a slasher film, so they know the deal. There are red herring. Evenly paced kills throughout. A “slasher movie within a slasher” structure. A whodunit mystery. Plus, not one but two gay characters, male and female.

You pretty much want to blast through Sequel. It’s a deliciously quick read. And taking into consideration the title of the book and its overall homage to slasher sequels, you best bet that the ending leaves the promise of a sequel. In fact, a sequel is pretty much a necessity!

Well constructed horror novel with a cool premise. I always like stories about the characters who are doing a movie/play and bad things begin to happen. This has the premise of the players of HS slasher movie coming back for a reunion sequel. Only problem is, someone has a problem with sequels. Great action and nice amount of gore and violence. I have come to realize that I am never disappointed with a Gunnells story. Very entertaining.

Marl Allan Gunnells first came to my attention when I heard about Asylum, his zombie apocalypse novella that placed the action in the middle of a gay bar. This idea sounded too good to be true to me; I mean, could the author pull off such an original approach without the story coming across as mere drivel?

So I read Asylum.

And it was great! Not only had Mark created a terrifying, action packed zombie tale but he had also written an original, fresh piece of queer horror that proved to me that this was a writer to watch.

Then I read Tales From the Midnight Shift, Volume 1.

An awesome collection that shows off Mark's originality and range as a writer, Tales confirmed for me that Mark has talent to spare and that he was going to be one of my "go-to" authors when I wanted fresh, new horror.

And now Mark Allan Gunnells brings us Sequel...

Sequel is an homage to all those creepy 80s slasher films like Halloween, Friday the 13th, etc. And it is a pitch perfect one. Clearly, Mark is a big fan of the genre and his reverence shows through with every word. All the tropes are here: psycho killer, small town, helpless victims...and Mark has centered the plot around the 10th anniversary of a cult horror film. A major studio has green lit a sequel, reuniting the cast from the original. But even before the new film goes into production, the killings start happening. The studio scrambles to save its film and the remaining cast lives in fear as the body count continues to rise...

Mark writes the kind of horror I like; it's thoughtful, fast paced, more "chills and thrills" than "blood and guts" and always rises above the fray. He creates characters that you become invested in, and keeps the tension ratcheted up, so you wind up reading the entire novel in one sitting, on the edge of your seat the whole time.

I enjoyed Sequel very much and it is a great tribute to the masked killer genre. Because the story stays true to the classics, there were points in the story that I was able to predict. But Mark is able to throw in some original twists that I enjoyed and the ending had me rooting for (what else?) a sequel!! What better time of year to pick up a creepy, scary read like Sequel than right now?! Or any of Mark's books, for that matter!

I really liked this one, it reads like a genuine slasher. I loved that the characters were mostly Gay and lesbian or powerful women. I want to see more authors make those types of character choices to better showcase the world in which we live. The ending was a little quick for me, that is truly my only complaint. Will we sequel?!

A trashy whodunnit/slasher book. I quite enjoyed reading it, but it wasn't exactly the most complex of stories. The characters were pretty cliché and the general plot was a bit far-fetched, but it chugged along quite nicely, and kept you guessing (to a degree) until the conclusion.

Overall, a good, if not exactly spectacular page-turner.

Like reading your favorite slasher

We'll written and a fun ride like any good slasher from your memories. The characters are likeable and believable. A proper plot twist at the end like any 80s horror film. If you're a fan of the slasher genre, this one's for you.
