After a fire destroys the house on the Manor of Tremayne, Richard Tremayne and his family return from London to Cornwall where, on the site of the ruins on the beautiful Rhosinnis Peninsula, he undertakes the building of a Georgian Manor House, Tremanyon. Local young woman, Ginifur Retallick is employed as a maid for his wife Annabelle and their two young daughters. Annabelle is determined to give Richard a son but, although she has given birth to two healthy children, the third child is still born - casting a shadow over the peninsula. At the request of William Pitt and Lord Falmouth, Richard sails to the New World at the beginning of the French and Indian War; during the period when the English, Irish and Scots settlers were living with the constant danger of attack and their homesteads burned to the ground. Meanwhile in the two years Richard is absent from Cornwall, many things are changing at Tremanyon. But 'Old Betsy' the White Witch who lives on the edge of the village, promises that the shadow will be lifted.
