Rate this book
In the country side of small town Rockwell, as high school graduation looms, a tangled web of love, secrets, and betrayal threatens to destroy the lives of three friends, David Forbes, Drew Marvin, and Stacy Scott as they are forced to confront the secrets and lies that have defined their lives.

Their seemingly idyllic world is shattered by a complex love triangle, family drama, and suspense. Set against the sweeping backdrop of the Marvin ranch, David, the charismatic quarterback, has always prioritized his future and social status while his friendship with Drew and Stacy takes a devastating turn when he succumbs to the charms of Claire Jacobs, the head cheerleader and preacher's daughter.

Stacy, the daughter of the town's drunk, had planned a perfect escape to college with David after graduation, but her world shatters when she catches him with Claire. Heartbroken and betrayed, she finds solace in Drew's arms who had been secretly pining for her, but their newfound love is tested by the consequences of David's actions. As both women become pregnant, a shotgun wedding only adds to the drama, and the two young couples must navigate the treacherous landscape of small-town gossip, family secrets, and loyalty.

As the trio struggles to cope with their emotions, they begin to unravel, and their actions take a dark turn. David's ego and pride mask a deep-seated insecurity, while Stacy's desperation for love and acceptance leads her down a devastating path. Drew, caught in the middle, struggles to hold on to his sense of morality, but the weight of their dirty little secrets and mistakes starts to crush them all.

Will they find a way to untangle the heart-wrenching web of their past and secure a happily ever after, or will the darkness they've unleashed consume them forever?

Lone Star is a gripping and emotional roller-coaster new adult/coming-of-age drama that explores the complexities of young adulthood, love, the power of friendship and unbreakable bonds, and growing up in a small town, where secrets and lies can haunt you forever. With its raw and unflinching portrayal of teenage angst, this book will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.

Where to start, where to start???

I enjoyed this book, but gave it low stars because I just could NOT stand any of the characters. They were all whiny, immature adolescents acting like they were adults. Not a one of the characters had any kind of backbone. There was no growth of character, they just reverted consistently to childish tit for tat behavior and used violence as the answer because their brains were not mature enough to actually talk about things or address any issues or problems without reacting in a hurtful manner (emotionally as well as physically).

Cheating = h was with H1 (high school boyfriend, not really a H, but we'll go with it). H1 and h have not had sex as h wanted to wait until marriage. H1 decides that he will just try a little since he isn't getting any from h (despite both promising the other they will be each other's "first"). h sees H1 and OW making out in H1's car. h later walks in on H1 and OW after they have had sex. h runs off with H2 (bff to h and H1). h and H2 then have sex, neither knows the other is their "first," but I mean come on...the blood, fumbling, inexperience did not give it away??? H1 and h have a heavy petting make out session where everything but penetrative sex occurs and minutes later, the h is having sex with the H2. No commitment issues here...there is just zero commitment and absolutely zero fidelity ever in any of the relationships. h and H2 get together. h and H1 sleep together, while h is waiting on H2 to pick her up. H2 sees them together, shocker seeing as how NOT sneaky everyone is in the book. Drama, drama, drama....

Side note: Did NO ONE in this book take sex-ed????? No condoms used and two teen pregnancies occur. The h's pregnancy is cause for speculation because she had both H1 & H2 in short amount of time. Again, not talk of safety either...I guess they were all STD resistant.

Drama ensues when paternity of h's baby is undetermined, all could have been settled with a DNA test, but these mental giants just assumed they knew because the baby had green eyes at birth that H1 was the dad. Again, no sex-ed??? Any idea about how genetics work??? Nope, they are all ignorant (I think they are just stupid. Ignorance implies they knew better, when I think they are just plain dumb).

h, who is engaged and living with H2, runs off as she just cannot handle the judgement of others in the town. H1, BTW, has married the OW who he knocked up because again, no one knows anything about safe sex or apparently how babies are made. H1 find h and they knock boots. h knows H1 is married, she went to the wedding, but since OW is a C U Next Tuesday, it's okay to have sex with H1?? Class act. h has others point out to her that the baby now has H2's eye color, so damn...guess H2 is now the daddy?? Yeah, so rather than take that pesky DNA test, let's just runaway like a child, cheat with H1, and act surprised when her mental gymnastics come to the conclusion she might have been wrong.

While h was away, H2 had formed a friendship with a ranch worker/OW with whom he shared all his troubles and woes. h returns to H2, all is hunky dory until H2 sees H1 come up behind h and kiss her neck. Does H2 stick around and confront them? Does he wait to see that h has rejected H1? Nope. H2 goes to RH/OW and proceeds to bang her all night, after he stops off to buy condoms...wait, wait, wait...H2 DOES know about condoms????? Shocking. h waits up all night for H2 and when he comes home she just blithely accepts what he tells her as the truth. Day after H2's night of banging RH/OW, RH/OW and he almost go at it again in the barn, but are stopped by H2's dad. Dad tells H2 to pull his head out of his ass and never do it again. H2 does it again. H2 does it again for MONTHS keeping the RH/OW holed up away in an apartment. h walks in on H2 and RH/OW sleeping nude in bed.

But in the end, all's good and h and H2 reconcile to live happily ever after. (Yeah, sure)

Another big issue I had in this book was the casual violence and the domestic violence that was "eh. no big deal"...h goes after OW while both are pregnant and gets into fight. (it's all okay, h is just a feisty girl, she's a wild horse that cannot be tamed) h is slapped several times by H1's mom, OW, RH/OW, her own mom...and by H2. There is no reason, and I mean NO REASON for anyone to be laying hands on anyone else for the reasons that were explained in this book. That alone lost several stars for me. h is also shoved into a counter by H2 which causes her to miscarry. And where is H2 while h is bleeding out and screaming for help? Being rushed to the hospital? Where is H2? Oh yeah, screwing RH/OW. And h gets back/stays with H2 and expects a HEA??? And those who know what H2 did, his physical abuse of the h, are happy they got back together?? It was all minimized and no repercussions. Not a fan.

h sees H with OW = see above times h saw both H1 and H2 with OW.

OW drama = OW with H1 was h's high school bully and they both fought each other physically several times. Comeuppance? h and OW become friends (insert eye roll). RH/OW insults h several times and they get into physical fights. Comeuppance? H2's dad fired her, but no worries, H2 sets her up in apartment in town and proceeds to bang her on the regular and justifying it since he is doing it so RH/OW is kept happy/satisfied since she is threatening to tell h about their banging. (poor H2 whose internal thoughts are that he is enjoying how rough he can be and when he is with h thinking about how is could be better when he is with RH/OW...such a gem) After h walks in to see RH/OW and H2 in bed, H2 says "whelp, now se knows so we are done" and RH/OW just fades away.

Anyhoo...if after this long drawn out recap still interests you in the book, enjoy all the soapy, drama llama, campy parts of the book. :-)

Let's forget the rampant cheating by literally everyone in the book, unprotected sex with multiple partners, high STD risks, multiple teenage pregnancies, soap opera level exaggerated drama, potential DNA donors assumed by *eye color* not science, blatant sexism, slut shaming, verbal, emotional and PHYSICAL ABUSE but her HEA is with the same guy that drug her out of a car by her hair and shoved her into the kitchen counter (causing a miscarriage) then went and jumped into his affair partner's bed while she was hospitalized? 👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎

I’m marking this up to 2* because , honestly, the book got written and sometimes that’s the hardest bit.
So much cheating, immaturity and the grovel is to hold your wife up at gun point and demand she comes home.
So much domestic violence, and the dad that beats his kid for roughing up his wife and then the mum saying 2 wrongs don’t make a right.
I think all these people are cousins. No they’re not but it was that kind of backwards feel community. Pretty sure the main characters are still in their teens, even for the epilogue.
