When maths teacher Zoe Swift meets the irresistibly funny and charming Jack Damon at her friends’ wedding, sparks fly faster than you can say "the square root of sixty-nine."
And when Jack turns up at her school, newly recruited as a supply teacher, she can’t ignore the intense effect he has on her when their paths cross in the corridors. But Zoe is still reeling from her husband's recent jaw-dropping betrayal and adjusting to life as a single mum to two teenage kids. She's not sure if she's ready to open her heart to a fling with a younger man.
As Zoe and Jack's connection grows deeper, their undeniable chemistry and Jack's steadfast support help Zoe rediscover the good things in her love of a good dance, the soothing power of takeout, the secret thrill of receiving a well-timed chicken emoji and the wonder of multiple orgasms…
But with complicated family dynamics and co-parenting with her ex to manage, a sizeable age gap, and Jack's uncertainties about his future to factor in, she’s about to find out that love isn’t always a simple equation.
Can Zoe accept this gift from the universe and take a chance on a far-from-textbook romance?
Get ready to laugh, cry and fall head-over-heels with this emotional and uplifting romantic comedy about healing after heartbreak. An unmissable read for fans of Sophie Kinsella, Mhairi McFarlane, Beth O’Leary, Sex Education and Teachers.

𖣠 overall thoughts
i must say, i was quite let down by this one. the storyline, the plot, the setting and writing style just click well for me. joe seems a good character, but the forced writing made it hard to connect with him. the settings felt contrived and lacking authenticity. plus, the flirtatious behavior before the divorce felt out of place. the third act break up and insta love is something which i don't enjoy at all.
this romcom wasn't romcom-ing for me at all.
thank you netgalley and storm publishing for the e-arc
3.5⭐ Genre ~ contemporary romance Setting ~ England Publication date ~ July 29, 2024 Publisher ~ Dreamscape Select Est Page Count ~ 344 (p+ 18 chapters +e) Audio length ~ 10 hours 41 minutes Narrator ~ Abigail Hardiman POV ~ dual 1st, present tense Featuring ~ long chapters, workplace romance, age gap, single parent, slow burn, some steamage
Zoe (44) & Jack (29) meet on the night she learns her hub, who she's been with since she was 20, has been cheating with her best friend. Then it turns out he's the new teacher at her school.
Zoe was a great mother and I liked the relationship she had with her 2 kids, as well as with her students. The divorce took up a bit more of the plot then I would have liked. I know it's the whole point of the book and why the main characters get together, but I could have went for more focus on the new relationship. Since there's an age gap that's talked about a lot and that got to be overdone.
Jack was really sweet and a great uncle to his twin nephews. I like when uncle's are supportive and show up to sporting events when they can. He's a bit quick with his feelings for Zoe, though.
While I wasn't a fan on the 3rd act, I can see why it was done based on the ages of the characters. But still I do like when characters are able to make their own decisions and they're not made for what the other thinks is best for them.
Overall, I did enjoy it well enough, but I quite possibly would have enjoyed it more had I read it and not listened (see my notes below). The chapters were really long which gave me a slow moving vibe, and I'm not too sure how I feel about the ending.
Narration notes: Why in the ever loving ever was there only 1 female narrator when it as dual 1st?? I've grown accustomed to it when it's in the 3rd, but 1st!?!?! Come on. She did not even try to do a male voice at all, which I guess maybe was just as well, but it was very distracting. If I didn't catch who was talking then it would take me a minute to figure out who it was. (Just realized I said the same thing in my review for Kristen's other book Sex Ed.)
Series notes: It's not tagged as a series, but the characters from Sex Ed are involved for a good bit here.
My first book by this author and I loved it. Romance is not usually one of my favourite genres but when I pick up a really good one I am happy to be able to give it five stars.
Textbook Romance is about Zoe whose marriage has just come to an unpleasant end, and Jack who is single but at that point in life where he feels it is time to be a grown up and take on responsibilities like a job with a future. In other words Zoe is quite a few years older, something she struggles with despite the fact that there is an immediate and powerful attraction between the two of them.
There are many excellent characters in the book as well as our main stars, and there is plenty of humor as well as tears. The dialogue is very well written and the story well told. Jack is one of those book characters you just love to read about and Zoe and her two children are beautiful too.
All in all an excellent read which I can highly recommend. My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Many thanks to the author, Kristen Bailey, and Storm Publishing for providing me with an ARC of this book. The publication date is set for July 29, 2024!
I was so excited for this romcom! I was instantly drawn to this one - the cover, title, and the plot. A few pages in and the prologue alone seems promising. This one 100% filled my Abby Jimenez, Emily Henry, Tessa Bailey, Lynn Painter, and Sarah Adams loving heart!
‘Get ready to laugh, cry and fall head-over-heels in love with this emotional and uplifting romantic comedy about healing after heartbreak, finding the courage to pursue your dreams, and recognizing true love when it's staring you right in the face.’
Yep! I sure did!!! I laughed, cried, and fell in love right along with these characters.
This one definitely teetered around the 5 star range. I fell in love with these characters. Dual POV was executed seamlessly. I loved getting a closer look at the main characters and their thoughts. I enjoyed the spacing of the timeline at the end and of course, love that there was an epilogue. Rounding down to four stars because somehow I still was craving more. I couldn’t get enough of Jack and Zoe.
If you like romcoms, this one is definitely for you. 🙌🏻✨🤍
Be sure to add this to your TBRs! I can’t wait for publication day to snag myself a copy for my home library.
Zoe Swift a married maths teacher meets funny and charming Jack Damon at a friends wedding and from there her life is never the same again.
Zoe finds out of her husbands betrayal at the wedding while talking / flirting with Jack, who then ensures that she gets home safely to her children.
When Zoe returns back to school after the summer holidays she finds out Jack has been hired as the new supply teacher, which leads to their connection growing, but as is always the case the course of love does not run smooth, with an ex-husband trying to co-parent their 2 children and uncertainty over the age gap.
This is a wonderful down to earth story of the complexities of life and the breakdown of one relationship and the start of a new one, especially when there are children involved. I loved the banter between Zoe and Jack and Zoe's sassy teenage daughter is a delightful addition to the story.
This almost feels like a homage to great teachers and what a wonderful job they do despite having their own lives and difficulties to deal with.
This is a slow paced book, but with the wonderful character dynamics and the brilliant narration I was happy to immerse myself in this world.
An uplifting, yet emotional romantic comedy.
Thank you NetGalley and the publishers for this ARC.
A very cute meet cute and I liked the romance between Jack And Zoey. Hot sex scenes.
Full review: I liked how this one worked. Maybe because Baily got the pace right in this one. The other one I read was too much and didn't even read as realistic. But "Textbook Romance" takes place over several months and then skips forward. That felt "right" to me. I get that we all want our happily ever after, but I always struggle with insta-love and people deciding this is their person in 2 freaking weeks.
We follow Zoe Swift who is at a wedding of her two teacher work colleagues. Her husband can't make it, but she finds herself having a good time and meets a younger man named Jack Damon. But Zoe gets terrible news that throws her and causes her whole world and the world of her two kids to be turned upside down. Several months later when school starts, she is shocked to meet the new sub teacher, Jack.
Zoe and Jack have great chemistry. I can see why Zoe is heart broken about her life, but still finds herself becoming increasingly attracted to Jack. And Jack, his story is great. I got it, and liked him and got his whole backstory and loved his protectiveness of Zoe. And there are some very real reasons why the two of them don't want to get together, but can't resist. The love scenes were great!
I also liked both of their plots and got why Zoe made some of the decisions they did.
Loved the ending. But the main reason why I gave this 4 stars was that at times the flow was so slow, and I got tired of the switching back and forth between Zoe and Jack when one of them would just 'retell' the same scene. Also, there were some minor plot holes going on with Zoe's story or at least it didn't feel wrapped up in the way that I wish it had. Just left open-ended.
I'm always a sucker for a book that takes place in a school setting. Textbook Romance was so much more than a regular rom-com story. With the age difference between the two characters, it reminded me a lot of the tv show "Younger."
I enjoyed both of the characters. It reminded me of so many people in my life that I find myself recommending this book constantly. Love, divorce, raising kids as a single mom, school setting, age differences, and so much more. It had just the right amount of spice for me also.
This is my first book by Kristen Bailey and it definitely won't be my last. I hope her other books are as entertaining as this one. What is your favorite book by her and that you would recommend?
Thank you to NetGalley, Storm Publishing, and Kristen Bailey for my free copy of this book. This is my honest opinion.
Textbook Romance is a heartwarming age gap romance featuring an endearing ensemble of supporting characters! Zoe’s and Jack’s story is filled with witty humor and some favorite comforting and nostalgic elements of the early 2000s romcom era.
The character complexities and interwoven relations were comparable to a dearly beloved film of mine, Love Actually. I love when every side character serves a purpose and doesn’t just exist to fill space. The quippy banter and tender sentiment fondly reminded me of Netflix’s One Day while some of the dialogue and plot elements brought the movie The Idea of You to mind (without the Harry Styles fanfic reference but somehow equally as good if not better!)
Sometimes the language around Gen X characters took me out of the story mainly due to repetitiveness but overall, I really enjoyed this book and found it charming, easily digestible and very funny!
Firstly, thank-you to @netgalley and @stormbooks_co for allowing me a chance to read this as an ARC 🥰
I did really enjoy reading this book, it was quirky and funny and most definitely enjoyable! I loved the relationship building and how much I actually felt for the characters! 🥰 it follows Zoe and Jack when they cross paths. There is an age gap and Zoe is going through a marriage breakdown and there is baggage! I actually liked how this didn't end like most romance books which is always a good thing! 🥰 only reason I dropped a star is because the chapters were a little too long for me and could have been split per POV but that is a personal preference and doesn't stop me recommending this book!🥰
Cute story. Likeable characters and a worthy characterization of learning to trust again after betrayal. Zoe and Brian are divorced and the story follows her dating again (enter Jack) dealing with everyone’s opinion and judgments. Not to mention dealing with an age difference (she is early 40s, he is 29) and how to discover who she is outside of her marriage. Funny anecdotes and easy dialogue.
Audiobook: British narrator, unfortunately she does not change her voice at all for different characters, ages or genders. With a lot of dialogue, this makes the story much harder to follow. I have noticed that many British audiobook narrators do not alter their voice like Americans (Jim May the ultimate Harry Potter narrator is outstanding exception)
Thanks to NetGalley and Dreamscape select for the ARC. Book to be released July 29, 2024
I think this is my favorite book of the summer so far!! I read it in one sitting! I loved this book! This book hooked me from the start with how wonderful Jack was to Zoe the minute he met her. There was an instant attraction even though he was respectful and didn't act on it because at the time she was married. I was so happy it worked out for them in the end because even though there was an age difference (she's older), they were able to see how well suited they were for each other and how happy they were and could be together. I will be reading more of this author's books for sure!
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Steam Level: 🔥🔥 (fade to black with lots of innuendo)
Jack and Zoe happen to meet by chance at a friend's wedding. Unfortunately, it's also the night Zoe discovers that her husband is having an affair. Four months later, Zoe is navigating life as a single parent, newly separated from her cheating husband, when Jack crosses paths with her again. As an attraction builds between the two of them, Zoe tries to let go of her grief and embrace this thing that's happening with Jack. But can she really expect something long-term with a younger man who is still figuring out what to do with his life?
After loving Five Gold Rings by this author, requesting an ARC of this one was a no-brainer. While this book focused more on heavy topics like cheating, divorce, and helping your children navigate the new family dynamic, it still had humorous moments and a beautiful romance between Jack and Zoe. I actually loved watching Zoe care for her children and help them still feel loved after what her husband did. It also made sense for her to question if Jack was just being nice to her out of pity or to help her feel good. I can't imagine being in her shoes! And Jack? He was the kindest, most loving man ever! Everything he said and did was so sincere, and he genuinely wanted the best for Zoe. Her age meant nothing to him. All he saw was an amazing woman who deserved the world, and he wanted to give it to her. Now, obviously if you're sensitive to cheating, it's important to note that Zoe isn't actually divorced yet when she is with Jack, but I wasn't bothered by that. I just focused on the beautiful love story. I did learn that this author has another book about Mia and Ed, the mutual friends of Jack and Zoe, so I'll definitely be reading their story at some point and can't wait for more from Kristen Bailey!
Thank you Netgalley and Storm Publishing for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This book was cute and fluffy and will have you hugging yourself.
I love books like this.
When Zoe finds out her husband is having an affair with her friend, she doesn't think she will ever be happy again but when Jack becomes a subsitute teacher at her school, she realizes just how wrong she is.
Its so cute and so romantic. I love how much Jack brings Zoe outide of herself. Bit of an age gap between Jack and Zoe, with Zoe being older with 2 kids but it works. It's one of the most uplifting reads I have read in a long time. It will give you the fuzzy-wuzzies. If you don't know what that means, read the book and then you will know.
Thank you to Netgalley, Kristen Bailey and Storm Publishing for an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
A very nice and engaging story with age gap trope (she is older than him), a lot of british humour and loveable characters.
The dynamics between Zoe and Jack were fun to read. Their silly flirting and compassionate nature brought the best out of them. I loved how nothing was too dramatic and the desicions the characters took were practical and sensible.
This does not get 5 stars however because of the writing style. Maybe since this was an ARC I found quite a few grammatical mistakes, but I hope this is rectified in the published version.
5⭐️ Update!! I also revived the audio ARC of this title. It’s not something I usually do since I can’t review it separately but I liked this book so much and I didn’t have any other audio books at the time.
Well listening to it made me amend my rating to a 5 Star. I loved listening to thins in a British accent. The narrator did a wonderful job. Clear voice and great pacing. I will seek the narrator Abigail Hardiman other works out I liked her so much.
I loved falling in love with the main characters all over again. It starts with every single gals dream of meeting someone at a wedding and it just gets better from there!
4.5 ⭐️! I may round up my rating after sitting on it as I really enjoyed this one but I’m very picky with my 5⭐️ reviews.
This was a delightful contemporary romance! I am so thankful to have gotten the eARC for free from Netgalley and Storm Publishing so I can leave my voluntary and honest review.
The book was down to earth and while it was an easy Hallmark-esque type of story as far as tropes, it had some meat to it and felt very natural.
I enjoyed watching the relationship between Zoe and Jack unfold as while there was definite physical attraction, the author let the audience see why they were such good people rather than falling back on looks or “just because” which happens so frequently in these type of books.
I also loved seeing the features of a great teacher and that Zoe’s students recognized her skills. Lastly, and without spoilers, I liked that it wasn’t tied up in a nice little bow at the end. It left room for a sequel (which I really hope there is) but it could be ended where it was too.
You also get to revisit her characters Ed and Mia from the authors book called Sex Ed published in July 2023.
This book gets published on July 24th 2024 so put it on your TBT for a perfect summer read!
My rating system since GoodReads doesn’t have partial stars and I rarely round up.
⭐️ Hated it ⭐️⭐️ Had a lot of trouble, prose issues, really not my cup of tea (potentially DNF’d or thought about it) ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Meh, it was an ok read but nothing special ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Really enjoyed it! Would recommend to others ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Outstanding! Will circle back and read again
A hilarious yet very heartwarming book that you must read!
When math teacher Zoe Swift meets the irresistibly funny and charming Jack Damon at her friends’ wedding, sparks fly faster than you can say “the square root of sixty-nine.” And when Jack turns up at her school, newly recruited as a supply teacher, she can’t ignore the intense effect he has on her when their paths cross in corridors. She’s not sure if she’s ready to open her heart to a fling with a younger man.
I loved Zoe’s character. She was very relatable Even after being devastated from finding out about her husband’s infidelity, she stayed positive and surrounded herself by good friends… and we all need good friends in our lives.
Jack was such an amazing guy. I adored how he just wanted to make Zoe happy. His devotion had me swooning. Both characters were so real that I felt like this could have been a true story.
Such a great story of growth and love. This age gap, closed door romance was so refreshing to see characters completely selfless and have such a great ending! But I really didn’t want it to end!
DNF @ 20% Thank you netgalley and the publisher for this ebook ARC!
I don't know what it is about the writing style of this book. I think I may find it to be trying too hard and coming across as forced and telly? The story itself seems fine. I like the premise of it. The FMC is an established adult with teenage children who is going through a divorce, and the MMC is working to set down roots. He's a really nice guy, but again, I felt told that because of the forced writing, and the places I guess it was shown just, again, felt forced and inauthentic. Also, it sorta felt like she was being flirty with him prior to the divorce-causing situation, which was... strange. The oh-so-fun insta-infatuation that I don't think I'll ever be a fan of.
I do feel a bit bad for this book because maybe I would have enjoyed it more if I wasn't having such bad days, because when I first started through it, I'd thought I'd at least finish it, even if finding it meh. But I can't find a reason after 20% to keep reading on, but I hope others can pick up this book and enjoy it where I can't <3
(4.5 stars) Many thanks to the author, @NetGalley and @dreamscape_media for the advanced listening copy of the book!
James meets Zoe at a mutual friend’s wedding on the day her life falls apart. Months later, Zoe is reeling from her recent divorce, trying to keep her fragile new family dynamic, with two heartbroken children, from falling apart when James appears as a substitute teacher at the school where she teaches math. He’s young - too young for her. She’s in her 40s, he’s 29 - but they have an undeniable connection. Where Zoe feels the weight of obligations keeping her in one place, James is content to try different careers without a long-term plan other than his brother, nephews, and friends. As they begin to give in to their physical and emotional attraction, they struggle with figuring out how two people who seem so different could find a way to fit together without sacrificing themselves.
There are several things I love about Kristen as an author. First, her wit is unmatched. Second, she takes tropes that I usually find cringe and puts a spin on them, making me love the story and feel profoundly connected to the sweet, complicated characters she creates. In Sex Ed, she took the “teach me” trope and turned it into something extraordinary. Here, she takes an age gap trope and makes you root for what the characters bring out in each other while truly addressing the complications of a ~15-year age gap. The messy, complicated relationship between Zoe and James is fantastic, as is how Kristen creates raw emotion between Zoe, her ex, and their children as they navigate their father’s destruction of their marriage. James is an epic golden retriever, constantly thinking of others (sometimes to his detriment), but he teaches Zoe much about embracing joy.
Abigail Hardiman narrates the audiobook and she is one of my favorite British narrators.
The story of the age gap relationship was captivating and rich with intriguing obstacles. The characters were deeply engaging, making the narrative worth the effort of following. However, the audio format presented challenges, particularly in distinguishing between characters and their perspectives. The frequent shifts in viewpoints added to the difficulty, often requiring a pause after each chapter to clarify who was speaking or acting. Despite these hurdles, the emotional depth and complex journey of the characters shone through. The story's resolution, affirming that true love can overcome difficulties, provided a satisfying conclusion. If you appreciate character-driven stories and can navigate through audio challenges, this tale is definitely rewarding.
Many many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this arc. It was a cute read but honestly I wasn't a fan of the writing style, it took me some time to finally read this finish. Overall, a 3 🌟 read for me.
Textbook Romance is my third book from Kristen Bailey (after 5 Gold Rings and SexEd), and it reinforced for me that this is an author I will keep picking up over and over again. Bailey's sense of humor hits just right in this age gap, 2nd change, and complicated family romance.
I loved Zoe and Jack's dynamic. From a "let's just have benefits and not get too serious" arrangement to a slow-growing friendship and love for one another, they showed so much support for each other as Jack figured out what to do with his life and Zoe figured out how to live her life post marriage. On paper, they didn't seem like a good fit, but in reality, they brought out the best in each other.
I liked that the ending wasn't a neat little bow but actually required more work, more growth, and more compromise than we are used to in a romance. Well done once again Kristen Bailey.
And she did it again! I’ve been lucky enough to have been reading Kristen’s books for several years. I read my first one during the COVID lockdown and discovering her and her books was one of the few good things I got out of that. Since then I’ve anxiously waited each new release cause her stories are the perfect antidote for any kind of problem, setback or malaise you may be suffering. Even if you’re feeling great, after reading one of her books you’ll feel even better, thanks to heartwarming and witty plots inhabited by characters so full of heart you’ll want them to be your friends (even though they only exist on paper).
Maths teacher Zoe meets Jack at her friend’s wedding, and sparks fly between them, but a call from her daughter will dynamite her whole world. Still reeling from her husband’s recent betrayal, she’ll meet Jack again when he turns up at her school recruited as a supply teacher. As their connection grows deeper, she’ll rediscover herself, but her complicated family situation and the age gap between them will threaten to derail this new chance on romance.
Kristen’s stories are always a good mix of romance and comedy, but this time around, maybe because some of the themes it deals with are a bit heavier (cheating, divorce, how hard can it for children, etc.), I found it relied more on the romance than the comedy, and it was equally as good (don’t worry, you have a good dose of puns and double entendres too!). Textbook Romance is at its core a story about healing, in this case after a heartbreak, but I think the lessons you can take from here are also useful after any kind of situation in which your world is turned upside down. You just gotta stop for a minute and put yourself first (selfish as it may seem) and think about what you really want and/or need without any outside interference.
Zoe, a woman in her forties, has been putting her husband and her kids’ interests first for years, to the point of forgetting a little bit who she really is. She has been looking after everyone but herself so, when presented with a new chance in love, first thing she believes is she’s not worthy of it. As always, the f***ing guilt! I loved how she was able to slowly rebuild trust in people and in herself, not paying attention to social expectations and managing to see beyond a number. Because age is just a number, and when you feel is right, it is right, no matter the age gap or whatever society has to say about it.
Jack may be youngish, but he was the most loving, kindest and respectful man ever (that scumbag Brian could learn a thing or two), and from their very first interaction at the wedding you could feel he only wanted the best for Zoe, no hidden agenda at all. I loved how their relationship unfolded in a pretty organic way, with lots of flirtation and witty banter, but nothing of that insta-love that feels so forced sometimes. And also, in true Bailey form, it had the perfect dose of spicy (and remember, emojis are charged by the devil 😈 ).
One of the things I like the most about Kristen’s books is how all of them live in the same world, with some old well kwown faces popping up every now and then. Ed and Mia from Sex Ed, have an important role in the story, but we’ll also meet back Beth, from the Callaghan sisters series. I like how this has allowed me to develop some long term relationship with Kristen’s characters. You may not see each other often, but when you do is always great fun.
The ensemble of supporting characters made a very tight group and, once again, I fell in love with most of them (not you, Brian), but my favorite was, hands down, Lottie, Zoe’s daughter. She clearly knows what she wants and how she feels and she’s not afraid to express it at all. You go, girl!
When reading a rom-com usually you can guess how it is ending right from the start, but the ending here was not what you could expect of this type of story, and I liked how Kristen chose not to go with the happy ending tied with a bow, but with a more realistic one.
Textbook Romance is an engaging, funny and more mature romance filled with amazing characters, great chemistry and a 🐓. The best textbook to study this summer!
Thanks to NetGalley and @stormbooks_co for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review, and to Kristen Bailey for letting me kick off the launch party once again! 🎉😄
Thank you author Kristen Bailey, Dreamscape Select and NetGalley for the ALC in exchange for an honest review!
Tropes: Age gap - Older female ✔️ Workplace romance ✔️ Single parent ✔️ Slow burn ✔️ Enemies (more so frenemies) to lovers ✔️ Guy gets the girl ✔️
Textbook Romance is a cutesy romcom that will have you rooting for the main characters from the very beginning. Zoe Smith is a middle-aged mom of 2 teenagers and a math teacher, who meets free spirited Jack Damon at a friend’s wedding, just as her life gets turned upside down. She returns to school after summer break and learns that she’ll be seeing Jack often, as he’s now a substitute teacher at the school she teaches at, inserting slow burn here.
The dual POV narrative adds to the overall story line as we get both Zoe and Jack’s thoughts (which are even better during the 🌶️ parts). I “ugh”ed out loud at some of the build-up and then also fist bumped the air during my drive home from work when they finally 🍆. Jack and Mia, seeing how bad their friends both needed this answer how perfect they were for one another (and how bad they wanted one another!) and playing match maker was the icing on the cake. Zoe deserves this; I mean, any person who was left in the dirt after their cheating spouse blind sided them deserves love and happiness.
“I’m so certain that what I feel for her is love. I’m so certain that this is something worth sticking around for.” (cue my water works here)
At first I was sad that Jack left to take the opportunity for him to grow in his career, which means he’s across the world and leaving Zoe behind, but then I reminded myself that he himself needed that to grow and be a better person. He didn’t feel good enough, he felt like a drifter, no permanent job - and to have the story finished off with Zoe AND the kids going to visit him made me swoon. They’ve grown while they were apart and then end up together, and all is right in the world.
Overall, Textbook Romance will remind you of watching your favourite romcom or reading your favourite fun romance author, with that butterfly kicking your feet feeling! Even though I listened to this via audiobook, I know the physical copy would be just as great (especially with Zoe and Jack’s dual POV!). It had me laughing and also had me crying, and had me wanting more of their story (in a good way). There’s fun banter back and forth, British slang, and is wonderfully written as it showcases just how difficult it is when a marriage ends, children are involved, and a new relationship begins 🤍
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this awesome book
after reading sex ed by this author i couldnt wait to read more books and i have to say they dont disappoint so i was very eager to read this one and boy it doesnt disappoint and i have to admit to having a little tear in my eye at one scene.....
zoe is at ed and mia's wedding, we met those two in sex ed. its at this wedding that she meets jack and chat... though they arent sitting at the same table she does rescue him from another cougar... much to his relief but its very short lived when zoe receives a very distraught phone call from her daughter
life for zoe and her two children will never be the same again... as the result of her husband affair sends shocks waves through them all not only have they been betrayed but also its with one of her best friends....
but jack handles it all well and on that fateful day organises an uber so that zoe can go home and help her children over the shock of the betrayal
but its when zoe and jack come face to face at school where he turns up as a new stand in teacher that things start to get interesting....
oh man this book its a rollercoaster of emotions whilst reading this... there are laugh out loud moments and at times angry moments when zoe is dealing with her dick of a husband.... but man i just couldnt put this book down it was captivating and a joy to read....
it gives you hope that maybe out there there is someone for everyone... the awww factor... no matter the age...
I've been reading and reviewing Kristen Bailey's books for long enough now to know that I shouldn't take the risk of attempting to eat or drink anything while reading!!! In all likelihood, I'm going to end up snorting something through my nose!!
Well, I haven't learnt my lesson yet and I'm delighted to tell you that 𝑇𝑒𝑥𝑡𝑏𝑜𝑜𝑘 𝑅𝑜𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒, saw me, once again, inelegantly snorting my way through more cups of tea than I cared to count!!
This one, while seeming slightly less edgier than some of Kristen's previous books (could she be mellowing?!) Is still brimming with her hilarious, saucy wit and humour. If you've read her books before, then you'll know that she has quite the turn of phrase and isn't afraid to use it!!
Zoe and Jack meet at the wedding of mutual friends (Ed and Mia - you can read all about them in 𝑆𝑒𝑥 𝐸𝑑). There's an instant spark, but she's married, and he's much younger and still deciding which direction his life is heading in.
Fast forward a few months: Zoe and her husband have split up, and Jack turns up as a temp teacher at the school where she works! You think you know what happens next, but you need to read this gorgeous book to truly discover a story about families, friendships and what being there for the ones you love really means.
I would be hard pushed to name my favourite characters here - I loved most of them, but Zoe's two kids captured my heart. Two typical teens, giving out the usual teen crap, but coming through it all with strength and dignity, wanting to show up for their Mom. The banter is dope!!!
Thank you to Kristen for inviting me to be a part of the launch and for sending me a copy of the book!!
It had been a while since I read a book by an English author, so it was a learning curve for the different slang and word choices. But, with my learning curve, I found the characters and story to be funny, charming, and a cute story of finding love after heartbreak.
Zoe is so focused on her age that it gets pretty repetitive at points. Yet, Jack takes it on like a champ to disrupt her way of thinking about their ages in terms of their relationship. I loved the easy way that Jack got Zoe to step outside of herself and her comfort zone; the laser tag scene was a favorite of mine. But the personal journey that Zoe goes through after facing heartbreak was nice to see - an older, divorced woman who is finding joy in her life again - it was well done and really propelled this book. I think Jack is just what was needed for Zoe, and he has great timing to be in the right place at the right time to change his whole life.
The only real criticism I had while reading was that sometimes it felt slow, like scenes were unnecessary or repetitive in the overall plot.
Thank you to NetGalley, Storm Publishing, and Kristen Bailey for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review!
4 stars This was a cute romance between teachers. The woman is a mom in her mid 40’s and the man is a mature 29, so there’s a bit of an age gap. I really enjoyed the mature interaction between both parties, neither struggling with communication (for the most part) or behavior. The friends in the storyline were all encouraging and wonderful. Even the teens were likable!
Where it struggled: I listened to the audiobook of this and could not tell who was talking, ever. There was no voice differentiation and it almost made me stop listening to it. I would highly suggest getting a male narrator for the male parts and keeping the current narrator for the female parts. I honestly thought this was a same sex couple for a while and still couldn’t figure out which character was talking.
I want to thank the author, NetGalley, and Dreamscape Select for letting me review this ARC. It was a really enjoyable read!
Thank you to the author, narrator, publisher and Net Galley for providing a free e-audio version of this title in exchange for my review.
This was not the book I expected based on the summary. I expected a cute little rom-com style story, but this was a lot sexier than I expected. I don't really care to read - or listen to - that type of scene, so this was a bit tough for me to really get into. Zoe and Jack seemed to be good characters, and Jack really seemed like the world's best dude ever - he was such a good guy, so understanding, he was difficult to believe. Maybe I read too many mysteries, but I expected a really shady past to pop out at some point! But, no, he's just awesome.
For those who like the steamy heat in their books, this is probably a great fit. I felt like too much emphasis was made on the age gap - that's just not important to me.
