This book has a lot of powerful things to say about school reform. It was required reading for a course, and offered lots of good food for thought. It made me rethink some of the concepts I have held about standardized assessments and wonder at the costs - financial and otherwise of de-standardization.
Sizer's my guru - formed the essential schools movement and the sad thing about this book is it was written so many years ago and is still relevant and real because we don't change anything in education...still pushing the same broken cart through the burned down barn...
The sequel to "Horace's Compromise". "Compromise" portrays the problem, "School" proposes the solution. Clear and easy to read. It's a shame no one will listen to him.
An outstanding book in both the literal and figurative sense of the word: I anticipate with great pleasure reading the final volume of Sizer's trilogy.
