Darkness #1

Visions of Darkness

Rate this book
Destined to be together, forbidden to love, two lost souls fight evil in an everyday world that belongs to the night. A dark romantasy by a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author.

Aria Rialta is a girl of two realities. One she was born to. The other she was chosen for. Both are a threat.

Every night when Aria falls asleep, she enters the nightmare world of Faydor to fight a war. It’s her calling to help destroy the Kruen, who feed sin and chaos to our everyday world of vulnerable humans. It would be a lonely realm in which to do battle if not for Pax, Aria’s dangerously irresistible soulmate whose mere touch can kill. It’s also a realm that’s getting harder to escape.

Aria’s hallucinations are seeping into her waking world. And the Kruen are coming for her. To help Aria, Pax must do what no one in Faydor has dared to do before—join his soulmate in the light of day. Giving in to their forbidden attraction could be the death of them, but they might not be able to stop themselves as they embark on a cross-country journey to fight the evils hunting them.

As their desire grows, so do Aria’s untapped powers, and a menacing new force far darker than the Kruen.

“i was created to take care of you.”

it's been difficult writing this review because i have no idea where to start! i can state: a.l. jackson has created a dark world that’s horrific and different, set within a modern setting and one that feels refreshing in its newness. visions of darkness blends forbidden romance with slow burn and friends to lovers, making it feel different from what we usually encounter in the romantasy sphere. considering this is jackson's debut romantasy, however i’m more inclined to consider this urban fantasy or urban paranormal, it had one of the most interesting premises where certain people, referred to as ‘laven’, are gifted with abilities to traverse between the dream and the real worlds, accompanied by a ‘nol’ or soulmate who laven are forbidden from meeting in real life, but the execution was difficult to move on from.

visions of darkness follows two bonded laven, pax and aria. each night, when they succumb to falling asleep and “dreaming” they reunite in the dream world as they enter tearsith, a safe haven before the hellish faydor, a cold and dark nightmarish world where the kruen (a kind of demon or monster) lurk, searching for the next vulnerable prey to feed on. all laven live lives separate from tearsith and faydor, as they’re forbidden from meeting each other in the real world, however for pax and aria they are the rare bonded soulmates who have defied all reason and teachings to find each other. when aria’s safety is threatened, pax journeys to find aria and ensure she’s protected—from a loving family who believes their daughter is mentally ill; a hospitalised institution and eventually the kruen themselves, who continuously use hosts to chase down aria across the states.

for one—this is without hesitation a “me” issue—i can’t stand fantasy elements within a realistic environment. the blending of both reality and fantasy feels chaotic; simultaneously, the worlds felt separated miles from each other, as the laven accessed faydor through dreams, making the real world and faydor distinct realms that overlapped in subtle ways. with the way creatures from the dream world would escape into reality, creating havoc through emotionally vulnerable people, and the laven would sustain injuries in the dream world that would only appear when they woke after long hours of fighting kruen in faydor, visions of darkness was both straightforward and confusing. this book raised a lot of unanswered questions that, i’m assuming, will be answered in the following installments but for the meantime, readers have been left with little information. what kind of frustrated me with this book is that it wasn’t made clear this was to be a series, as it wasn’t marketed as such, so the world-building felt lacking and the time it took to start introducing the information was horrendous. taking into account that most of the fantasy elements originate from tearsith and faydor, it’s natural that the lore will take some time to unfold, but this also limits the knowledge we have and learn of the world and the magic.

“i already have love, pax. it’s bold and bright and never ending. it’s always lived inside me, hidden in my dreams. it’s you where you’ll be forever written inside me.”

♡ aria rialta
considering aria’s eighteen, she’s lived a sheltered and traumatic life within that short span of time—her family is convinced she’s mentally unwell, that scars and wounds that she’s sustained in faydor are self-inflicted; she has the ability to traverse between the real world and the dream world, with the heaviest responsibility of protecting humans from being affected by the monstrous kruen resting on her shoulders; and she’s on the run from the kruen, who have infected humans and are hunting her down after her laven abilities manifest into something greater and more extraordinary. while her power is different from usual laven abilities, i love that aria isn’t an immediate master of it and we see as she stumbles in her search for answers to her unique powers. for someone young and still impressionable, aria’s really strong emotionally and mentally having been forced to grow up faster than others due to her situation, but there’s a lot of change and learning ahead for her. she’s been labelled a liar and admitted into institutions against her choice, however she’s one of the most empathetic characters despite everything and it’s refreshing to read about a character who isn’t jaded or full of sass.

“make no mistake, i would break every fucking rule in this world and in that one to keep you safe.”

♡ pax morrison
much like aria, pax has lived a difficult life—his dad beat him for looking different; he exchanged his real life family for his laven one and he has no real friends outside of aria. rather than view his surroundings with an empathetic mindset, he broods and has become hardened by life, something to be expected considering the mistreatment he’s suffered. with this pax is, without doubt, the epitome of morally grey and “touch her and die”. he will do whatever is necessary to ensure aria is safe and well, even if it means doing questionable things. however, the amount of references to pax’s protective nature towards aria and how he wants to make sure she’s safe was too much and it’s unfortunate because it made him feel flat and dull, as if there was nothing else to his background and personality which, to be frank, i won’t be shocked if this is it. we learn about his character on a surface level and never have a real opportunity to understand him beyond what we know—which isn’t much.

there was no chance aria and i weren’t meant for this. no chance she wasn’t supposed to be mine, and i wasn’t supposed to be hers.

♡ pax + aria
as much as visions of darkness is aria’s story and her growth, it’s also a dark romantasy. however, the ‘romance’ between pax and aria was underwhelming. it’s often we’re told of pax’s internal grapple with wanting to protect aria and keep her safe without overstepping more boundaries than is needed, meanwhile he struggles with loving aria too despite his feelings being forbidden. truthfully, pax’s feelings felt more platonic than romantic; i’m assuming this is deliberate because despite having a four year age gap, the book starts with aria at seventeen and she’s barely eighteen when she’s met by pax, who’s twenty-two. setting aside the age difference between them, i don’t believe they would’ve had any serious connection.

in the end, this book wasn’t for me but if you are someone who loves the following tropes: friends to lovers; forbidden love; soulmates; morally grey male character; “the chosen one”; close proximity and one bed, to name some of them that feature, then perhaps visions of darkness will be for you. as much as i wanted to love this book, the execution was the most disappointing aspect of it. despite this having a promising beginning, the age of the characters and underwhelming personalities made them unrelatable and the lacking world-building made this book difficult to be engaging.

Visions of Darkness by A.L. Jackson

5/5 stars

Gosh where to start. This book really took me by surprise. I did not expect to love it as much as I did. It falls in the romantasy category and it does fit in that. But it's also a story that feels quite simple but also has a layered background. It really reminded me of the Twilight era. It has such an old school vibe. And lots and lots of authors are chasing that addictiveness of the Twilight era and most fail and fail and fail. And I honestly think A. didn't mean to write a book with that particular vibe. But she did and it's a freaking masterpiece. It's a book that you so easily fall into, and the story instantly has your heart and soul and you yearn alongside the main characters. Their love was instantly palpable and instantly woven into my core. And I haven't read a book like that in years. So I fell madly, completely and irrevocably in love with it and the characters.

This book is the story of Aria and Pax. They are Laven and are gifted by Valeen. Every night when they fall asleep they enter the world of Tearsith. Ellis is teaching them the lessons of Valeen. And after the lessons they enter Faydor. A dark and cold world where they hunt the Kruen. The offspring of Kreed, the one who betrayed Valeen. Aria and Pax are each other's Nol. They are bound together and are each other's soulmates. And in Tearsith they can be together. But they are forbidden to meet each other on earth. Both worlds must be kept seperate. And most Nol's have an earthly partner too. But Aria and Pax are so tightly connected. They only love each other and no one else. The second they enter Tearsith they call each other's name and spend as much time with each other while they can. But it's all platonic and they yearn for each other. And God their yearning is so damn powerful. I felt it in my own bones. I instantly fell for both of them. It was love at first sight and that love only grew while I read this book.

Their lives on earth aren't as beautiful as they are in their dreams. Pax ran away from home when he was fifteen. His father hated him and was cruel and abusive towards him.
Aria has a loving family. But one of the consequences of being a Laven is that the wounds you sustain in Faydor are visible on earth as well. And her parents, especially her mother, fear for Aria's safety. They think she is mentally ill and inflicts these wounds on herself. As a child Aria told them about Tearsith and Pax. Even drew the world as she is a gifted artist. But they think she is schizophrenic and had her admitted a few years back. Things are okay now as she is able to hide her wounds and learned not to talk about Pax and her fated path as a Laven anymore.

But things drastically change when her mother spots clothing with blood on it and instantly is cast into tears and fear for her daughter's sanity. Aria also manifests a new gift that has never been seen before. Aria tries to run but she gets admitted again and she is in agony. Calling out to Pax as she is taken to that rotten place. And as soon as she is there she realize isn't safe and that someone is after her.

And Pax, Pax isn't about to let her rot in that place and is going to save her. And that is what this gorgeous book is about. It's about a man who loves a woman so incredibly much that nothing will stop him from keeping her safe and being hers for eternity.

This book is an epic quest about being stuck. How to get out of it. About being on the run. About finding out what this new gift is. It's about control and not giving in to the strong bond you feel. Because the teachings clearly say if you are with your Nol, it'll irrevocably cause you to harm your Nol and it'll end in agony and pain.

The secondary characters are so strong as well. My favorite secondary character is by far Jill. Jill works at the mental health facility and she sees Aria. She sees the girl behind the labels. She sees clarity behind the diagnosis. And lord the last scene with Jill. It has my heart. It has my complete heart and damn I love her with my entire heart. I really hope we read more about her in the second book.

And gosh I loved the entire journey. I loved their love and connection. I love how loyal and fierce they both are. I love how scary the Kruen and Ghorl's are. How much of a mind game it all is. I loved the twists and turns. But most of all I love that old school feeling. I love that utter addictiveness that got lost in the last 10 years. It is such a great book. Its simplicity just made it freaking epic.

5 huge stars from me for this amazing book! Definity gonna buy a physical copy of this one! It is that good!

This was such an interesting beginning to a series! I had a feeling that AL Jackson would write a very compelling Romantasy, and that is true about this book, if nothing else. I would call this a New Adult Romantasy and I think this is a decent dive into a new style of romance from her.

I was immediately gripped by the struggle and predicament Aria finds herself in. Living a double life. Where in one, she is a High School Senior about to turn 18 and in the other, she is a magical warrior who fights off the Darkness in the land of Faydor. With her Laven family, who train and fight evil together.

Pax is her protector and partner in Faydor. He keeps her safe so she can do her job. But in the waking world they are not supposed to ever meet. Big bad things will supposedly happen and be drawn to them if they were in the same place at the same time. That doesn't keep either of them from longing for each other. Nor does it keep Pax from rushing to Aria's rescue when her earthly family has her committed for the strange wounds they find on her body that look like self-harm.

Yeah, she is in quite the sticky situation.

Now that Pax and Aria are together, how will they ever go back to the way things were, and that becomes even more impossible when enemies begin converging on them. They have their backs against the wall and they don't know what the new power manifesting in Aria really means.

I found parts of this story to be very compelling and the narration performances by Victoria Mei and Teddy Hamilton really helped with that too. They really kept the story moving. I have always found that AL Jackson's writing sounds the best when it is being performed. It is very lyrical and flows better that way.

However, I did find this to be a bit *too* flowery, with many descriptions using a lot of words to not say anything at times. That may seem harsh, but I feel like after completing this novel, I should know a bit more about what's happening. I'm happy we didn't have too much info dumping, but I have so many questions. I know there are more books coming, and this did end in a cliffhanger, but there should have been a bit more meat on the bones.

Overall, I will continue this series and I am anxious to know what comes next for this pair!

3.5 stars. This is the first fantasy romance from A.L. Jackson who usually writes contemporary romances. While I think the audiobook was definitely the way to go with this read and was entertaining, I also thought this was just okay at the end.

The fantasy world is interesting, we have the real world (very contemporary setting) and then a dream type realm that is accessed literally in the character’s dreams. I was intrigued with this set up, but I think the story was slow going and I wasn’t super invested in what was happening overall with the plot. I think that needed a bit more. We can separate the two realms/worlds because in the “real” one we get first person POV and the “dream world” we get third person POV (not sure if I enjoyed the 2 in the same story, but it also worked for the different realms we are in). This very much has a fated quality to the couple, very soul mates vibe.

I received an audio ALC, all thoughts are my own.

I absolutely love the world that was created for us to dive into! Visions of Darkness was such a different world than what we are use to seeing from A.L. Jackson and she did not disappoint! Aria and Pax were so well-written and their connection was so intense and heart-wrenching you could feel it coming off of the pages. I envy Aria, she is a fighter through and through! Her strength and resilience throughout the book was so inspiring. She faces so much, yet never lets it break her spirit, and I loved how she handled everything life threw her way.

Pax's unending dedication to Aria really stood out for me. I loved that he followed his heart and went after her, despite the risks involved. Their bond felt so real and the chemistry between them was sizzling even though they had not met yet in real life. The romance was definitely a highlight for me, but the suspense and the growing darkness added so much more to the book.

The way Aria’s dreams seeped into her waking world made the stakes feel even higher, and the world of Faydor was so beautiful. The tension was so strong throughout the book, especially as Aria’s powers grew stronger and the threat of the Kruen got even more intense. The plot twists and the rising danger kept me on the edge of my seat.

My only small critique is that I wish there had been a bit more focus on the world-building in terms of Faydor’s origins and the Kruen’s history. I love the nod to Maria and the history with her husband. With that said, the emotions, the character growth, and the incredible journey made this book a fantastic read. I couldn’t put it down, and I’m definitely looking forward to the next in the series!

dnf at 48%…. honestly this is going to be a major me thing than anything else, the premise of this book really hooked me and had me excited for it however i am just not a fan of fantasy set in the real world, i guess it didn’t click for me in the description that it would have been set in america.

i think that this book was extremely unique and very well done for being her first romantasy, it’s no secret AL is a phenomenal writer but at the end of the day this one just wasn’t for me personally

First Impressions
Visions of Darkness is the first book in a fantasy themed series by AL Jackson. I knew the minute that this author came out with this that I would want to read this one and I have to say that I fell hard for the romance in this one. Now I don't think I would call this fantasy romance to be honest. As its still in our world, I would term this paranormal romance with magical realism elements in it. I did find what the author created here to be quite fascinating though. I wasn't sure how a contemporary romance author would do in a different sub genre, but I actually fell hard for this one here. The world building was beyond enthralling and it had her lyrical style of writing that I found beyond compelling and I didn't want to put this one down at all.

First Line
"Gather round, children."

The Main Protagonists
The Hero: Pax
The Heroine: Aria

Summary
Aria met a boy when she was a girl in her dreams when she drifters into a different world, the nightmare world of Faydor, she along with the others just like her fight the demons " the Kruen" and this is where she met Pax who has been her childhood friend. Growing up her family thought she was mentally harming herself and traumatized, they never truly tried to understand her or even believe her. She grew used to keeping the truth from them. But now she is a adult, but now she is in trouble, her waking world is giving her hallucinations and her parents have forced her into a mental institution but now her life is in danger from the Kruen as they are becoming a force in the waking world. Pas and Aria meeting in life is forbidden, but Pas refuses to let Aria go and be at risk because of warnings. He will protect her at all costs, but their adventures drift in the in between of the waking world and the hidden realm, will their love be enough to overcome the forbidden threshold?

What I Loved
Visions of Darkness was beyond captivating. From the first chapter, I was so quickly brought into this world that this author introduces and immediately you can sense the connection that Pax and Aria have together. They have a love that is bright and intense and beyond bold. We see such growth in our characters, more from Aria as we get more POV from her than we do Pax. I do kinda wish it had been more equal so we could have seen more from Pax's perspective. I was so drawn into their relationship. How they will do so much for each other, the needs they have attention for and don't neglect each other. I loved how Aria was constantly aware of Pax and his needs and not wanting to neglect him. I absolutely adored that in this heroine.

The plot of the story will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat. My heart broke for Aria in how she is betrayed by those that raised her and those she trusted. I loved how Pax saw her and was always her steady rock. We see their individual strength and how strong they are with their own powers and how capable they are in their fighting abilities and being so aware of the evils they have to face. You see how years have taught them self discipline and a inner determination and you can really sense that in the story in such a awe powering way.

What I Struggled With
I didn't really struggle with much in this book. It left with a bit of a teaser in the end, but thanksfully no cliffhanger for our couple. Loved how it resolved for them and I am eager to see what the author plans on for this series here.

Narration
POWERFUL!!!! It will literally sweep you off your feet. This pair is so well done and I adored how they really capitalized on the inner workings of emotional and development that grows throughout the story here.

Overall View
A.L. Jackson literally creates a work of literal art of a unique paranromal world of dream walking, embracing your magical inner talents and connecting through the acceptance of your duty and calling....it melted my heart in every way!

Paranormal unleashed

This was an incredible start for a book and as you go through actually found packs to be my favorite character he is dark he's amazing he's the one you want to have your back.
Aria is a is a good character but not my favorite and she has a lot of things going going up has been tough dealing with things going on in her life with you will figure out quickly and you really just want to kill our dad I mean he's trying to take care of her in his own way but at the same time that is just the worst way to handle things.
My one question for everybody is if you were in this position what would you do would you run would you stay would you go back what would you do cuz you know when family gets involved things always get screwed up!
But yes I do recommend this book it kept me busy I read it in one day which is a sounding because hey it caught my interest in it kept me there so happy reading I hope you have a great time and you can read it in one day as well!

Incredible, Unique, Gripping, Page-turner, Consuming.

‘You are what my heart knows’

This fantasy romance book was chefs kiss. It has been awhile since I have read a fantasy book that had me up at all hours, wanting to see what happens next. It was so gripping and consuming. I loved all of it! At no point was I bored, It is a perfect mix of plot and romance.

This book is a hell of a rollercoaster of emotions.
It had me Giddy ,heartbroken ,Happy ,Anxious, Sorrow for the characters. I was emotionally invested from the get go.

The connection that the two main characters have is captivating, forbidden in the real world only allowed to exist in Tearsith

I thoroughly enjoyed the 2 worlds in this book, the concept of saving people at night in Faydor and having a different life in the waking world. What could go wrong when the 2 worlds start to cross over.

Everytime I close my eyes I think about drifting off to Tearsith, I didn't want it to end! Safe to say I will be buying the physical copy and I'm SO SO excited for book2! (Assuming there is a book 2 with the way that one ended! Had me gasping!) I'm excited to see how both the main characters grow in the next book and see the true extent to Aria's gifts!

Overall it was an incredible read, The plot is unique and compelling. The magic and world building is easy to understand even if you are not a fantasy reader. You will not struggle to keep up with the different worlds. Perfect for those dipping their toes into this genre.

A book that will stay with me for a long time.
Pax&Aria have my heart

One last quote before I go!
“A long time ago, I gave up on the idea of there being any beauty in this life. Gave up on the idea that I would ever experience any of it. I was wrong. So fucking wrong. Because there’s you, Aria. There’s you. And there could never be anything more beautiful than that” ♥️

This is a romantasy without fae! Honestly it was pretty refreshing. It’s set in our world, but when that FMC goes to sleep she gets transported to a different world and fights with others like her to defeat these demons who possess people into doing bad things.

I enjoyed the romance in here even if it was instalove (because they are soulmates). Which isn’t a spoiler because it’s said in the first or second chapter. It was also an easy read (under 400 pages).

The only “downside” is the fact that the characters are a bit young. The FMC just turned 18, and the mmc is only a few years older than her, so it can come off as YA, but it isn’t.

It comes out on January 7th, and I recommend!

DNF at 49%, this just wasn't for me. The premise of the story was interesting but it just took too long to get to the point. There just wasn't much going on for the first 45% of the book, very little plot progression and very minimal worldbuilding.

This one wasn't for me but I could see people who aren't really into fantasy liking this so definitely give it a shot!

“I think everything about you is magic Aria. I think you radiate it.”

“His body was a flame that incinerated. With the way my body burned, I knew I’d be left nothing but ash.”

When I heard A.L. was writing a fantasy, I literally thought Heck to the Yes! Amy is one of my must read authors and everything she touches, turns to gold and I love that she completed this story, a story she started years ago.

This world is unlike anything I’ve ever read before. While asleep, Pax and Aria drift off to another world where they have a very specific job to do together. During the day they live in the real world battling their every day lives with people/ family members who don’t understand them and without each other. They are forbidden to find eachother in the real world. And let me tell you, it is really sad. It’s so sad what they have to endure and what they go through on a daily basis. But, what they do find solace in, is each other, as soon as their eyes close. A bond unlike any other. The intensity of their connection is overpowering, and at points brought me to tears. Because something happens, and he has to find her…

I’m not sure if this story will be for everyone. But what I will say is that Pax and Aria are unique and have experienced something together, that nobody else ever has. Visions of darkness will officially be out January 7th and I cannot wait to hear everyone’s thoughts once they read them! Patiently waiting for book 2!

Enjoyed it, but a bit conflicted..

Story: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Trope: fantasy, forbidden
Angst: 😱😱😱
Smexy: 🔥1\2

I'm a huge fan of AL Jackson. She has a certain style of flowery prose that comes across as so beautiful and romantic, but in this book it almost felt like too much. A little repetitive and a little more flowers than substance. I still enjoyed it. I will definitely be reading the next book in the series. I just didn't love it like I usually do. With that said, the story and premise was super original and interesting and I definitely felt connected to the characters. Its worth the read and I can't wait to see where this goes!

"sʜᴇ ᴡᴀs ᴍʏ ᴘᴇʀғᴇᴄᴛɪᴏɴ. ᴍʏ ᴇᴄsᴛᴀsʏ. ᴍʏ ᴄᴏᴍᴘʟᴇᴛɪᴏɴ."

OH MY GOSH..... WHAT DID I JUST READ!!! I'm not a Romantasy reader. In fact, this was one of my first books, but Amy is one of my favorite authors, and I'll read anything she writes, so read I did and to say I was consumed by this story is an understatement!!! As I was reading, I felt like I was watching a movie. I could see it all play out, and that is what made me fall even more in love with this story.

"ʏᴏᴜ'ʀᴇ ᴇᴠᴇʀʏ ᴅʀᴇᴀᴍ ɪ'ᴠᴇ ᴇᴠᴇʀ ʜᴀᴅ. ᴇᴠᴇʀʏ ᴠɪsɪᴏɴ ɪɴ ᴛʜᴇ ᴅᴀʏ. ᴇᴠᴇʀʏ ʜᴏᴘᴇ ᴛʜᴀᴛ ɪ'ᴠᴇ ᴅᴀʀᴇᴅ ᴛᴏ ʜᴀᴠᴇ. ᴀʟʟ ᴏғ ᴍᴇ, ɪᴛ's ʏᴏᴜʀs.”

Aria and Pax may have been a forbidden love through the eyes of their Laven family, but in their hearts, their love knew know bounds and that they were fated to be together. The evil these two endured was small in comparison to the scars upon their bodies from the evil they fought to save those in need. Watching the bond and love between Aria and Pax grow was a beautiful journey that I didn't want to end.

"ᴛʜᴇ ᴏɴᴇ ᴘᴇʀsᴏɴ ɪɴ ᴛʜɪs ᴡᴏʀʟᴅ ᴡʜᴏ ʜᴀᴅ ᴇᴠᴇʀ ʟᴇғᴛ ᴀ ᴍᴀʀᴋ ᴏɴ ᴍᴇ. ᴏɴ ᴛʜᴇ ᴏɴᴇ ᴡʜᴏ ᴡᴀs sᴄᴏʀᴇᴅ sᴏ ᴅᴇᴇᴘʟʏ ɪɴsɪᴅᴇ ᴍᴇ ᴛʜᴀᴛ ɪ ᴅɪᴅɴᴛ ᴋɴᴏᴡ ɪғ ɪᴛ ᴡᴀs ᴘᴏssɪʙʟᴇ ᴛᴏ ᴇxɪsᴛ ᴡɪᴛʜᴏᴜᴛ ʜᴇʀ. ᴡʀɪᴛᴛᴇɴ ᴏɴ ᴍʏ sᴏᴜʟ ᴀɴᴅ ɪɴsᴄʀɪʙᴇᴅ ɪɴ ᴍʏ ʙᴇɪɴɢ."

Holy hell, that ending, ahhh, I need more!!! I'm excited to see what happens next. Bring on book two!!!

Visions of Darkness is an exciting fantasy romance that grabs your attention right away. It tells the story of Aria and Pax, soulmates who fight evil together in the dream world of Faydor—even though they’ve never met in real life. During the day, they live normal lives and deal with their own problems, but at night, they become brave warriors. Aria is strong and caring, while Pax is the kind of hero who bends the rules to protect her, especially when the dangers from their dreams start appearing in the real world.

The book is full of action, forbidden love, and high stakes that make it hard to stop reading. The world feels rich and detailed, and the romance between Aria and Pax is both deep and risky. Their bond grows stronger as they face dark enemies, and it gets harder for them to hide their feelings. If you enjoy stories about destined lovers and epic adventures, this one’s a great pick. The cliffhanger ending will make you want to read the next book right away. Overall, I enjoyed this read. I have some lingering questions, but I hope they will be answered in future books.

Narration:
Victoria Mei and Teddy Hamilton delivered amazing performances. They transported me right into Aria and Pax's world and really brought the characters to life. Their performances allowed me to feel the passion, tension, and emotions elicited by Aria and Pax's epic journey. I highly recommend reading and listening in tandem.

Thanks to A.L. Jackson, Montlake, NetGalley, and Valentine PR for the gifted eARC. Opinions expressed are my own.

For many readers, this is going to be a must-read
The storyline is original it takes place in two realms
as well as does some time hopping to give us all the backstory and information we need to understand both worlds and how things work
I enjoyed the concept of the parallel universes - Not so much what our heroine had to face when she was awake on Earth though
I wish we had a bit more IDK if I want to say time or maybe background
I just couldn't connect with the characters in a way that would allow me to immerse myself in the storyline fully

I do plan on trying again though
Many times it is just a mood thing which is why I recommend the read

I was literally yelling at my kindle “JUST KISS ALREADY” 😂 I think this was a great start to the series, but I have lots of unanswered questions. The cliffhanger has me wanting book 2 asap!

In her latest novel Visions of Darkness, New York Times bestselling author A.L. Jackson weaves an intricate tale of forbidden love, supernatural powers, and the eternal battle between light and dark. This first installment in her new Darkness series marks an ambitious departure from her contemporary romance roots, venturing into the realm of paranormal fantasy while maintaining her signature emotional depth and romantic intensity.

Plot & World-Building

The story follows Aria Rialta, a young woman who leads a double life - one in our world and another in a nightmare realm called Faydor. Every night when she falls asleep, Aria joins other chosen warriors called Laven to fight demonic entities known as Kruen, who whisper evil thoughts into the minds of vulnerable humans. In Faydor, she fights alongside her soulmate Pax, though their connection is meant to remain purely spiritual. When Aria develops the ability to sense and fight evil while awake - a power that marks her as a rare "Valient" - she becomes the target of a powerful entity called a Ghorl.

Jackson has crafted an innovative mythology that feels both fresh and familiar. The dual-realm concept is well-executed, with Faydor serving as a dark mirror to our world. The author's world-building is particularly strong in depicting how the Kruen's whispered corruptions manifest in human behavior, creating a chilling commentary on the nature of evil and free will.

Character Development

The protagonists are compellingly drawn, though they occasionally fall into familiar paranormal romance tropes. Aria's journey from an isolated teenager to a powerful Valient warrior is engaging, if somewhat predictable. Her struggle with being misunderstood by her family, who believe her supernatural experiences are mental illness, adds a poignant layer to her character arc.

Pax proves to be more than just the typical brooding love interest. His backstory as an outcast who found purpose in protecting humanity gives depth to his character. The evolution of his relationship with Aria from spiritual partners to forbidden lovers is masterfully handled, with their chemistry practically leaping off the page.

Writing Style & Pacing

Jackson's prose is atmospheric and emotionally charged, particularly during the scenes in Faydor. Her descriptions of the nightmare realm are vivid and unsettling, creating a palpable sense of danger and otherworldliness. The author excels at building romantic tension, though some readers may find the repetitive internal monologues about forbidden love somewhat tedious.

The pacing is generally well-maintained, alternating between intense action sequences and quieter character moments. However, the middle section of the book, where Aria and Pax are on the run, occasionally drags with repeated scenarios of danger and escape.

Strengths

- Innovative blend of urban fantasy and romance elements
- Rich mythology and world-building
- Strong emotional core and relationship development
- Vivid action sequences
- Compelling exploration of family dynamics and acceptance

Areas for Improvement

- Some predictable plot developments
- Occasional overuse of romantic angst
- Secondary characters could be more developed
- Certain plot threads feel unresolved, even accounting for series continuation
- Some repetitive internal dialogue

Romance Element

The romantic relationship between Aria and Pax forms the emotional core of the novel. Their forbidden love story is both passionate and tender, though it follows some familiar patterns of the genre. The tension between their spiritual connection and physical attraction is well-executed, building to satisfying emotional and romantic payoffs.

Thematic Depth

The novel explores several compelling themes:

- The nature of good and evil
- Family acceptance and understanding
- Self-discovery and empowerment
- The price of destiny
- Love versus duty

Final Verdict

Visions of Darkness marks an impressive genre debut for A.L. Jackson. Despite some familiar tropes and pacing issues, the novel's unique mythology, emotional depth, and compelling romance make it a worthwhile read for fans of both paranormal romance and urban fantasy. The book offers an engaging read with its ambitious world-building, passionate romance, and captivating action sequences. However, it occasionally falls short with predictable plot elements and repetitive internal monologue.

✨“Make no mistake, I would break every fcking rule in this world and in that one to keep you safe.”

So, I'm going to start off by saying, I don't read fantasy. I WANT to... I just haven't made the jump yet. But if Amy writes a romantasy, you better believe I'm going to read it. And honestly, I feel like this was a great step into the romantasy world.

Aria & Pax both live in two different realms. Their normal every day life during the day & at night when they fall asleep, they enter the world of Faydor. There, they fight all the evils that are lurking. They have never met in real life, but in Faydor, they are considered soulmates. Pax realizes she's in trouble in the real world & he tracks her down to save her, even though it's considered forbidden. This man will literally burn down the world for her. He is so protective and I love it. I loved seeing the two worlds collide. The ending definitely left me wanting more! I cannot wait to see what happens.

What to expect:
🖤Morally Grey MMC
🖤Fated Mates
🖤Two Different Realities
🖤Forbidden

Thank you so much to A.L Jackson & Montlake for this ARC. This one releases on January 7!

I honestly don't even know how to describe this book, other than captivating and original.

Set between the real world during the day time and Tearsith, a magical realm at night when asleep, this book hooked me.

I loved the premise - when Aria falls asleep at night, she is transported to another world where she must banish the Kruens - evil spirits that enter the minds of the people on Earth. But there are others who help aid in this fight, and they are forbidden from ever meeting in the daytime/real life.
Obviously, rules are made to be broken, which sparks a race across the country to 'fight the big fight '

Pax, Pax, Pax - morally grey, but loyal as hell. A stand-out MMC for me.
I loved the feistyness of Aria, and even though Pax would protect her until the end, she could hold her own.

The only put down I have is that the next book isn't available because that ending?! Wow.

Thank you to Montlake for allowing me an advance copy of this book via Netgalley.

I had never read this author before and apparently this is her first fantasy so I decided to give it a try. It’s available to listen to the audiobook for free with a KU membership, and I saw it was narrated by Teddy Hamilton, one of my favorite male narrator. He and the female narrator did an incredible job with this audiobook.

I was instantly hooked on this story! It’s so different than other fantasy romances I’ve read, because the main character is both in a fantasy type world & the real world. Her whole life she’s gone somewhere else in her sleep, a place that feels so real, and there is a boy there, Pax, who she has a deep connection with. She talks about him and this other world like they are real, and she also wakes from there dreams with marks on her body, so her family thinks she’s mentally ill and harming herself. Right before she turns 18 they make one last desperate attempt to get her help & sends her to a mental hospital. It’s not until Pax comes to her while she’s awake that she knows for sure he and everything she’s dreamt of is real. The rest would be too spoilery so I’ll leave it there.

This was just such a unique story. I adored the romance!

The only thing I felt was lacking was the world building. I really wanted to know more about that because it’s so interesting! I hope the author makes up for that lack of world building, and shows us more of that other world, in the second book. I’ll definitely be reading the sequel once it’s available! Especially with that cliff hanger! Need to know what happens next. I can look past the lack of world building with this being the authors first try at fantasy, but also because everything else was very entertaining and kept my interest. I think the author did an amazing job with her first fantasy and I can’t wait to see her build on to this first book.

When I found out our girl was delving into the romantasy sector I immediately jumped at the opportunity to read this book. I was hooked from the very first page and literally could not stop.

Ever since she was little Aria was different. When she slept she would go to a different realm to learn more about her kind with her Nol, Pax. The Lavern fight in Faydor against Kruen which are beings that poison the minds of those who are already inclined to do bad and influence them into doing the horrible things. While fighting spiritual beings in her sleep takes its toll, Aria wakes up with physical wounds following these battles. Her family, not knowing the truth, believes she is self harming and sends her to get help. Aria quickly comes to realize she’s not safe even when she’s awake as her powers are stronger than anyone could have ever anticipated which makes her become target number one for the evil they’re fighting against. Once Pax comes to her rescue the two embark on a journey that defies all logic, physics, and realms alike.

Both Pax and Aria are such interesting characters in their own ways. I felt like we go so much inner turmoil for both of them about different things. Pax struggling with his feelings for Aria and Aria struggling not only to find out who she truly is but to convince Pax that the connection between the two of them was inevitable and meant to be.

I don’t read a lot of romantasy and this was a fun ride! While some of the terms/ names were slightly confusing at first the premise was easy to comprehend and follow and I really enjoyed this story. This was low spice, high plot and I did not mind it one bit.

Thank you so much to AL Jackson + team for the eARC for review. Congrats on your new journey of romantasy and can’t wait to see what comes next from this world!!
