A lonely woman who feels like a fish out of water + a firefighter sea dragon baffled by human ways + a forbidden love that will shake the whole sea = one magical romance!
Neridia Small just wants to fit in - but that's hard when you stand six foot six in your bare feet. Maybe it would be okay if she was supermodel skinny to go with her supermodel height, but a ridiculously tall, fat black woman? She's only ever attracted the wrong sort of attention. She longs to find a man who'll look past her size and see the real her. A nice, normal man...
John Doe will never understand humans. A sea dragon knight from the hidden underwater city of Atlantis, he reluctantly took human form in order to search the land for the missing Pearl Emperor, ruler of all sea shifters. Though John has found unexpected friendship as part of a unique all-shifter firefighting team, his heart will always lie under the ocean... until he rescues Neridia from a mugging.
As a knight, John's forbidden from taking any mate - let alone a human. And a sea dragon's honor is his life. But when a decades-old secret rises to the surface at last, only John can protect Neridia from a deadly foe. Fate binds John and Neridia together, honor demands that they stay apart... and love will require one of them to sacrifice everything.
Zoe Chant loves writing paranormal romance. Over a cup of tea (or something stronger) she whips up sexy tales of hunky heroes and adventurous heroines to tantalize and satisfy her readers. Sizzling hot romance, no cliffhangers!
While series should ideally be read in order, all of Zoe’s books are standalones and can be read in any order. This includes books within series.
Loved, loved, LOVED this book! Amazing writing, fantastic world building, hilarious banter and two characters you could cheer for. It had everything I want in a paranormal romance, plus fantastic cameos from the others. There were moments I gasped and ones where I burst out into laughter. It was so enjoyable and while it can be read as a standalone, I would really recommend reading the other books first. This is easily one of my top favourite paranormal series. I can’t wait for the final two books, but part of me dreads the end.
John and Neridia both take some getting used to but this was still addictive as hell. And just as obvious in it's conclusion. I still liked to see John's world and would like to see more of it.
John is a sea dragon and thought he didn't have a mate anywhere in the world because sea dragons only mate other sea dragons and he had looked for his mate before becoming a Knight-Poet which comes with a vow of celibacy.
Neridia is really tall and when her latest date gets a glimpse of her standing up, he recoils in disgust. When she leaves she brings the wrath of several men who had their drinks spilled while she was trying to leave.
When John goes for a swim in the Loch Ness, in his sea dragon form, he comes to the rescue of Neridia when several men were chasing her on the water's edge. He's in Scotland for a wedding but more pressing matters pop up while he's there. Neridia is saved by John but she runs away from him because of what he is. That's when John's friends step in to help get them back together. I love how his friends all care about him.
When John spots a painting back at Neridia's home that her father painted, he realizes something that he never thought could be true. Neridia is more than she seems and so was her father. John is shocked to say the least but it brings up a whole bunch of other questions. But before they can figure everything out, John and Neridia find themselves in serious danger. Thankfully his shifter firefighter team come to their rescue or things would have been really bad.
But Neridia and John find themselves in serious danger when they thought they were safe. When the reality of the danger is revealed and John realizes what he's up against, it was just sad. I loved the ending though. It was everything I was hoping for. All in all, this book was so good. It's one of those books that I know I'm not doing justice for in my review but just know if I could give it more than 5 stars, I would. I liked it that much.
I read romance because I strongly believe in soul mates, love at first sight, and loving the same person forever. I also believe that a person's honor should only ever come second to their loved ones. Why ?Because I would break any oath for my children and my Husband.
I also read them to get that warm and cuddly feel good moment at the end when the H and h come together and everything works out, what spoils that for me is when I simply can not see them living Happy ever after, the most I can say about Naridia and John is they will be happy for now, but god forbid John has to choose between his family and his honor...
Series: Fire & Rescue #4 Rating: 2 stars - It was ok
This was an ok fated mates story. After meeting John in the previous books I was very interested in learning more about him and the sea dragons. Unfortunately, I didn’t really like John because he was constantly ignoring Neridia’s feelings about assuming the throne. He also was in denial about there being a traitor or that he was prejudiced against the shark shifters. Neridia was a good heroine. I just don’t think these two were a great couple because there wasn’t a lot of romance or emotion between them except frustration and pain. They were constantly pushing each other away, more John due to his sense of duty, and it didn’t leave a lot of time for these two to really connect.
I loved reading about John and Neridia both are gentle giants. John is used to being large and therefore center strange, but Neridia has always had horrible experiences with being so big. I felt horrible for her. I think the past trauma affects her power as well. Neridia comes from the Greek "Nereides" or sea sprites, which is completely appropriate. I really enjoyed these guys.
Our hero is John Doe, a 7 feet plus "Poet Knight" Sea Dragon who's spent the last 2 years on land trying to find their missing Emperor. I think I liked him better when he was Griffin's roommate who kept burning food. Here, I thought he was a bit too stubborn about taking the newly found Emperor's daughter, who's also his mate, back to Atlantis. And yes, Atlantis is where the Sea Dragons sank into the sea to escape from the Fire Dragons centuries ago!
Our heroine Neridia Small is 6'6" and have had a lot of trouble looking for a suitable partner who's not horrified by her size. I must admit being a fairly short person, the plight of tall people is not something I'd thought much about, except gawking when I see someone especially tall walking past and thinking he/she would make a great basketballer. But now I do see that they have their set of issues just like those of us who are short.
There are some funny moments, like when John's sister asks Neridia for an "air name" that matches her brother and Neridia said the female equivalent would be Jane Doe. I'm not sure if it was ever specifically written who named him and why he owed Griffin his life? Maybe I missed it in the previous books? Anyway, it did have quite an epic battle in the end and a cute epilogue.
As this appears to be the last available audiobook for the series so far, I will be putting the next books in my TB "listen" pile for the time being. :)
It seems that is a good book and a very bad one in this series, after the last one, things were getting better, but this book was incredibly predictable and the character of John was beyond annoying. It had so much potential, the description of his culture and the difference with the other shifters were very interesting, but from the introduction of the new characters, you could see who were the good guys and who the bad guys, again, even if the writer was trying to force you to suspect others, it just didn't add up. Also, John's ideals get a little too much after a while, you just get more and more frustrated by him, especially when you find out that not everyone is like him.
So again, I didn't like the book, and I feel bad because it could have been so good if it wasn't so obvious and annoying.
My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 Unicorns - I loved it!!! ***I choose what I read and review based on what intrigues me!! Yes, I got a review copy of this book, and no one tells me what to think, feel, or write about any book! I have bought this book because I loved it, and I own most of Zoe’s books!
This cover matches the series!
This is the fourth book in the series, and it is for adults only due to the violence and steamy scenes. I highly recommend reading the series in order to make it a much richer experience with the characters.
John is already a character I love because his lack of comprehension or misunderstandings are at times hilarious. Neridia is strong, but she has issues of feeling inadequate with the way people have treated her like she doesn’t belong.
As always with Zoe’s books, there is the perfect combination of action, drama, treachery, and romance. I love her style of HEAs. Her books are easy to love if shifters and HEAs are your thing.
I highly recommend this whole series to all shifter lovers especially if you love HEAs and Zoe already!

The characters, while endearing, often seem to lack common sense, leading to unnecessary complications that could have been easily avoided with a bit of forethought. Despite these frustrations, the plot's dramatic elements do add an interesting layer to the story. I enjoy the series overall, yet I find myself slightly irked by the predictability of the endings.
I was on a Sci Fi binge now I am on a Paranormal shifter binge and that is how I came across Zoe's books. Once I find an author whose books I like I will read them all and let me tell you Zoe has a lot. They are quick and easy reads. Some serious some make me laugh but all have danger and fated mates. I enjoy paranormal stories as they take you away from everyday life and anything goes. 1 like
ABSOLUTELY CAPTIVATING !!! Title: Firefighter Sea Dragon Series: Fire & Rescue Shifters Author: Zoe Chant Designation: Book 4 of Series, Full-Length(300 pages), Standalone Paranormal Romance, No Cliffhanger Reading Platform: Kindle Edition My Rating: Five Captivating Stars***** Be still my heart! I loved, loved, loved this book! I adore paranormal romance and no one does it better than Zoe Chant! I've been a diehard fan for several years and I can truthfully say, I've never read a Zoe Chant book I didn't enjoy. Chant is an incredibly gifted storyteller, a talented wordsmith, and a true master of her trade. Chant excels at creating unique storylines with vividly depicted worlds and beautifully detailed descriptions, then populating her creations with intriguing, larger-than-life characters who will surely capture your imagination along with your heart. And Firefighter Sea Dragon was no exception! Once I started reading, I could not stop. I was riveted to my seat, white knuckling my ereader with my heart fluttering wildly in my chest as the hours flew as quickly as the pages... and it was FABULOUS! But let's talk details so you'll know why I love this story so much.
Firefighter Dragon is an imaginative, fast-paced, easy-to-follow, full-length, standalone paranormal romance liberally laced with elements of fantasy. Fortunately for the reader, this story is somewhat longer than the majority of Chant's books coming in at approximately 300 pages, none of which is fluff or empty filler. The narrative is beautifully written in the third person with his and her perspectives. The dialogue is smart, well-executed, at times hilarious, and flows effortlessly. Firefighter Sea Dragon is exceptionally well-crafted, developed and edited as are all of Chant's books. I also feel compelled to mention, Chant's books have beautiful covers and artwork which always seem to capture the spirit of the story and its characters, and I truly love that about her work. But I think my favorite component of every Chant story is the characters she creates to populate her fascinating worlds. They are captivating, intriguing, engaging, and no matter how fantastical their alter form may be, whether it be shifter or creature of myth and legend, they are still relatable to the reader with the same challenges and heartaches we experience in our daily lives. I was immediately smitten with the two protagonists of this story, beautiful but lonely conservationist Neredia Small who was anything but small, and handsome sea dragon John Doe aka Walker-Above-Water, Emissary to the Land from the Pearl Throne, Knight-Poet of the First Water, Sworn Seeker of the Emperor-In-Absence, and firefighter for the East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. Wow, what a mouthful but sea dragons have two names, one for land in their human form and another for the sea in their dragon form which is proudly sung beneath the waves and is a compilation of their accomplishments and titles. And sea dragons don't have inner dragons, they have inner humans since their dragon is their true form. Sea dragons are not born as humans like most shifters, but are hatched from eggs as baby dragons! See, I told you this was unique and imaginative, and this is just a small sampling of what to expect in this story. I've read a lot of Zoe Chant books and loved all the characters but John and Neredia quickly became my favorites and truly captured my heart. Their story really played havoc with my emotions. John and Neredia's story just ripped my heart right out of my chest! My heart actually ached for these two characters. I sniffled, sobbed and outright ugly cried through the entire book but, as in true Chant form, I also snickered, snorted and giggled my way to the end. I ran the full gambit of emotions - sadness, heartbreak, anger, and joy. I laughed with these characters, empathized with them, cried for them, and shook my fists in anger at the injustice they suffered... and loved every single minute! Did I like this book? No, I LOVED it! In fact, I loved it so much, I bought it. Please allow me to explain. I have Kindle Unlimited so I could have read this story for free but after reading the sample, I knew this was a book I wanted as part of my permanent library so I could read it again. Chant's books are all enrolled in the KU program but I still find myself buying them all. What can I say? Yes, they're that good and I always feel like I get my money's worth! Would I recommend it? You bet and I am but only for adult readers since it does include some steamy, dreamy love scenes. If you love unique paranormal stories filled to the brim with danger, drama, action, adventure, lies, deceit, betrayal, angst, passion, romance and always a happy ending, then Firefighter Sea Dragon is calling your name! There have been three releases in this series prior to this one and several of the characters from the previous books do cross over and appear in all the books, but you can still read them in any order. Why am I telling you this? Because I highly recommend this entire series! They're all fabulous! Will I read this author again? Absolutely! Just as soon as she releases her next book! I can hardly wait for the fifth book of the series which will be Hugh's story. I'm dying to discover what kind of shifter he is! So bring it on Zoe Chant... inquiring minds want to know! And finally, was I entertained? Completely! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!
Sea dragon John Doe would never understand humans. No matter how much time he spends with his land walker friends and fellow firefighters from the East Sussex Fire and Rescue Atlantis, he longs to return to his underwater home in Atlantis. Two years is too long to be away from the life he so loves under the sea. He understands his mission is of utmost importance and has diligently searched the bays and harbors of England's coastlines as well as the nearby lakes and rivers to locate the missing sea dragon King of Atlantis, Pearl Emperor, Commander of the Waves, and ruler over all the shifters of the seas. Sadly, John has found nothing in those two years... just as he'd found nothing when years earlier he'd thrice circled the globe, scouring the oceans and seas singing for his mate, but his songs had been answered with nothing but silence. And sea dragons only mated with other sea dragons so finding a mate on land was not even possible because sea dragons did not generally mix with other shifters or humans, and only lived in the sea. He'd finally admitted defeat and only then was he allowed to pledge his fealty to the Pearl Throne by swearing vows of service and celibacy, guaranteeing his loyalties could never be divided between love and duty. He'd long ago accepted his fate and now lived only to serve the Pearl Throne. Having failed to find any trace of the missing Pearl Emperor, it was time to return home, just as soon as he fulfills his obligation to his oath-brother by standing with him at his upcoming wedding which was to be held at a resort located on the shores of Loch Ness, one of the few bodies of water John has not checked, at least not yet. So imagine his surprise when the waters of the Loch reply to his song, whispering secrets he could never have anticipated. Yes, there's something nearby... or rather someone... but it isn't the Pearl Emperor. Oh my! It's a beautiful woman and she's his mate. What? He'd searched and sang for her but she'd never answered... and she claims to be human... one who can't even swim! Not possible! So what does a loyal sea dragon Knight, one sworn to celibacy and forbidden to take a mate, do now?
Neredia Small desperately longs to find love and acceptance but her dream of finding happiness seems more and more impossible with every passing day. It's hard to fit in when you're six and a half feet tall with skins as dark as the night sky and literally tower above most men. She loves her job as a conservationist but she's so tired of her lonely existence, and even more so since the deaths of her mother and father, occurring only a few months apart. Neredia has no other family which is why she's tried finding companionship through online dating sites and, yet again, felt the heart-wrenching sting of rejection after another disastrous first date. Once the men see bountiful curves, and towering height, they run for the hills, never to be seen or heard from again. It's heartbreaking... and futile. As if this latest humiliation isn't enough, the universe seems to be conspiring against her, determined to bring her to her knees, literally, when she's mugged outside the tavern near Loch Ness. The thieves try to steal her pearl pendant, the only thing of value she owns, not because of its monetary value but rather its sentimental importance since it was given to her by her father just before he died. Thankfully, a dark and very large seven-foot-tall good Samaritan suddenly immerges from the waters of the Loch to rescue her. Oh my! This guy is not only insanely hot but he's also insane, like looney tunes crazy, because he declares he's a sea dragon Knight of Atlantis and she's not even human, but the daughter of the missing and now deceased Pearl Emperor which makes her the Empress-in-waiting. Huh? And if that's not enough, he also claims she's his mate but they can never be together because of his vows of fealty to the Pearl Throne. Utterly and totally ridiculous, right?!? But when old secrets come to light and an unknown enemy surfaces making deadly attempts on her life, Neredia realizes there may be more truth to this Knight's claims than she originally thought, and knows she needs answers to her questions about her parents... and herself. But can John Doe, her Knight in shining armor, protect her from those who wish her dead so she can finally discover the truth? We'll see!
For me, Firefighter Sea Dragon was a 3.5, nearly a 4 * read. I very much enjoyed the underworld city, creatures, & descriptions in Firefighter Sea Dragon. I liked & “fell for” the the MMC, John Doe, to whom we’ve been introduced in the previous books in this series. I struggled with either identifying or sympathizing with, let alone admiring the FMC, Neridia, however. I prefer strong female leads - physically trained, intelligent or mentally resolved, and/or emotionally strong. I felt Neridia had none of these strengths, yet, unbelievably, she was teamed with a very strong male lead and was our female “heroine.” Because I so enjoyed the rest of the characters and the story, I mentally kicked Neridia’s butt a few times, hoped she would finally get her act together, and kept reading. Spoiler: she finally does in the last chapter, or so.
Firefighter Sea Dragon is a lite shifter romance story with main characters who find their life “mate,” and persevere through hardships to gain their HEA. There is sexual intimacy between the 2 main characters that falls somewhere between sweet and steamy (3 of 5). It is just one aspect of their committed relationship, not merely casual sex, and not the main emphasis of the story. Strong profanity is used, but I believe less than 5 times. This series is not suitable for young readers, IMO.
I believe readers who prefer lite rather than dark paranormal novels, couples who must work together to achieve their HEA, and a touch of humor & fantasy in their books will enjoy Firefighter Sea Dragon. I loved the underwater portion of this novel.
Sea Dragon can be read as a standalone, but the characters from the earlier books do make appearances. I recommend the previous books in the series.
I enjoyed John and Neridia's story. It was a little bit tougher of a read for several reasons, but I enjoyed it. John and his heritage is different from the other shifters and so his obedience to duty, even over logic, was difficult to take sometimes. There were a couple times I wanted to reach into the book and smack him upside the head, but then he would only take that as a challenge and completely miss my point. Neridia was full of fear and it held her back a lot. The grandeur of Atlantis was wonderful and I like so many things about the sea dragons. John's sister was fun and I love how she ends up. We meet a really interesting character called the Master Shark who left me anxious for more.
This book was longer than the others, and the fact that there was so much doubt and debate over what to do about Neridia and their mating and everything that goes with it made for a somewhat slow read. That being said, the ending is very satisfying and I enjoyed their story nonetheless.
Firefighter Sea Dragon fills you with wonder at sea with views from Atlantis and neat dragons that sing. John's journey puts instict against duty, and Neridia's journey is all about finding courage.
I really enjoyed the prior book which led to this one- it is super creative and interesting but ultimately felt like there was a missed connection between these mates. We didn't get to see them really spend any time bonding- right into the action. From the Loch Ness to Atlantis, its action packed but not one of my favorites.
This one’s another that’s not as fresh, because again I was listening to the audiobook to distract myself from a lot of pain in the ER waiting room before I could get in for emergency surgery. Like, I’ve read or listened to the audiobook for all 7 of these books at least once before, but that doesn’t mean I remember everything super well.
I’m not sure how I feel about this one, it’s complicated. There’s some things I really like about it, some things that I think are missed opportunities, and some that I think are pretty bad mis-steps…and I’m not always sure which is which.
John Doe (and his future son, Joe Small) are some of my favorite boys in these related series, but I think John’s at his best when he’s a wise, supporting character threatening to force-feed his oath brother terrible soup or singing to the rain? And this book’s delving into his home and background ends up , heh, washing those vibes away a bit. At least I kinda feel that way. I dunno. Something makes me not vibe as hard with John, possibly just going from the more open to interpretation feeling regarding sea dragon culture to actually defining how striated and frankly sterile the daily life of at the very least a knight is. Like. I’m always gonna rankle at vows of chastity being a requirement, especially for an entire class/rank of person. Those being a requirement to become a knight is wild to me, and then the abusive, racist, controlling knight commander (who is admittedly The Bad Guy) just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
It’s not super fair to judge Atlantis’ flaws on this and the later books in the Wildfire series, but the more we actually see of sea dragon culture the more basic and less interesting it even is. I think mostly it’s just not terribly well-developed, since a lot of these books are based more on aesthetics, “Which flavor of sexy beefcake do you want to sweep you off your feet, lady reading this?” than deep exploration of the cultures involved with these hot shifter boys. It’s just more glaring with the sea dragons, since they do live entirely apart in a hidden secret world that can operate on its own. But even in text, it goes from being firmly established as a culture where the inhabitants spend most of their time in their non-human forms, only shifting to treat with dignitaries since using human language is often the only way to communicate to…IDK, shiny be-pearled Ren Faire stuff. I’ll try and dig into it more when I get to Wildfire Sea Dragon, since that’s where the shallowness of Atlantis’ culture/development as a real place really becomes obvious, or maybe where the efforts to develop the Pearl Empire as a real culture stopped.
Otherwise…fuck royalism. Fuck the monarchy, fuck all that shit. Like, it’s bad. Glad Neridia’s actually a professional conservationist, and therefore has both training and knowledge of how to address the population problems Atlantis is facing, and a scientific background with which to approach leading. But fuck. It’s not like scientific grounding is genetic and lasts beyond one generation. Hereditary leadership. What a stupid fucking concept.

My review and an extended sample of the audiobook are posted at Hotlistens.com.
John Doe has been a part of this series from the beginning. He also had a large part in the previous book with Griffin, as he was an oath brother to Griffin. But we still didn’t know much about this shifter. He goes by the name John Doe, because you can’t say his name in human form. Sea dragons are an elusive group of shifters. They don’t come out on land often. They are big on honor, or at least that is what they say.
Neridia Small just wants to be like every other woman. But at six foot and six inches tall, she stands taller than most men and that has made dating difficult for her. This story starts out with her going on date with someone from one of those matching sites. She fudges just the one number on her profile (people do that all the time, right?). She also arrived early, so that she could be sitting down when the man arrives. Things start off pretty well, until she stands up and that’s where things go all wrong for her.
This was another great addition to the series. I really enjoyed learning more about John Doe and his species. I really liked his sister. Neridia was a great addition to this group as well. She is a strong woman, who has had it hard with the loss of both of her parents recently. There are quite a few things that happen to her in this book too.
I continue to enjoy this series and look forward to more books that follow these firefighters of Essex County.
Narration I continue to enjoy Lucy River’s narration of this series. I love all the different accents that she is forced to do for this series. In this book, she had all the different sea creatures that must be voiced, many of which are speaking mind to mind. It was very clear when they were talking mind to mind versus speaking out loud (which can sometime be hard on audio, since in print they usually italicize those parts, but if the narrator doesn’t change something, it can be hard for the listener, but that isn’t the case here).
**I like to thank the publisher for providing me with a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
Firefighter Sea Dragon is an intricately woven tale of a lost leader, an honorable knight, a land of fable, an evil villain hiding in plain sight – and a love that will be willing to make any sacrifice necessary for a mate’s happiness or life. Every story in the Fire & Rescue Shifters series has been an amazing read, but John and Neridia’s romance is simply riveting. John has always been a man of honor, perhaps a deeper code of honor than his friends ever imagined, after all they were land walkers and he was of the sea. So when John finally discovers his mate, his friends do not, cannot understand how his honor binds him to a certain protocol. A Knight is nothing without his honor, and breaking his vows would mean setting aside his honor – something he is incapable of doing.
Neridia has been sheltered, protected by her family from the rest of the world. Now after her father’s passing she is truly alone in the world and her attempt at finding companionship has gone horribly wrong. Neridia stands out among humans, striking, and tall she is often the brunt of giggles and pointing fingers. When she meets John there is a spark between them, and possibilities that she is truly afraid of pursuing.
The plot of Firefighter Sea Dragon is so finely woven it was a complete pleasure to read. I’ve enjoyed all of the stories in this series, but this one has a special feel to it that draws you in a bit deeper than you imagined possible. I’d love to talk about it, but to do so would give away spoilers so I’ll simply say that this is a story that you’ll want to read. There may be times that you’ll want to shake John for sticking to his honor, or comfort Neridia when she doubts herself but you will be engaged in their story.
I would highly recommend this story and this series to any Paranormal Romance or Shifter Romance reader who enjoys an intricate plot, strong characters and revisiting with old friends who have already had their stories told or will soon. This is a story well worth your time.
I read this title through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.
Neridia Small just wanted to feel like she belonged but being a beautiful, curvy tall woman that was kind of hard. She wanted to find a man who saw the real her not only the physical aspect. What she found was someone unexpected.
John Doe, a Sea Dragon shifter and a member of the East Sussex Fire & Rescue firefighter team. He never understood how the humans no matter how hard he tried. John was a Knight from the hidden underwater city of Atlantis. He was on a mission to find the ruler of all sea shifters, the Pearl Emperor.
He met some great friends while in his quest and even though his friends found mates. John knew he could never have one cause as a knight it was forbidden to him especially if she was human. Things changed for John when he saved Neridia from a mugging. He knew the instant he looked it her eyes that she was his.
There was a well kept secret surrounding Neridia's true identity. When John found out about it, his quest took on another yet life changing meaning. Danger was lurking around his mate and he would protect her, come what may.
Loved how closed all the guys were, it was like one big extended family. The way they all tried to make John change his mind about leaving was well done. Griff and Hayley (FIREFIGHTER GRIFFIN) finally tied the knot.
Neridia didn't want to claim her birth rights and that shocked John but they worked things out. Those they thought were their enemies turned out to be friends while friends turned out to be their greatest foes.
FIREFIGHTER SEA DRAGON is the fourth book in Zoe Chant's FIRE & RESCUE SHIFTERS series. It was heartwarming and intriguing. 5++++
****I received a free copy from the author, without any obligation to review.****
John Doe is a firefighter. He's also a knight-poet sea dragon from the undersea city of Atlantis & he's been sent to dry land on a mission. A mission somebody doesn't really want him to complete. Since he could not find his mate, he took the vows of celibacy & service to the Pearl Emperor & the undersea realm. But the emperor has disappeared & the Knight-Commander has sent John to find him or any clues as to his whereabouts. What he found was his mate & a whole lot of mystery & trouble.
Neridia is a conservationist near Loch Ness. She's also very tall. Much taller than the tallest of human men, so she finds it very hard to fit in. She got her height from her father but he & her mother are both gone now & Neridia is all alone. Until the night of her latest disaster of a date when she was surrounded by men who wanted to hurt her. She thought she was done for until he came out of Loch Ness to save her. And, boy was he tall!
Thus starts the latest adventures of the Alpha Team from the East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service. And what an adventure it is. This story just keeps moving along & you just can't help wanting to see what happens next. I can't wait to read the next in this series either. The characters are strong & engaging & the story line is new & intriguing. All in all a good evening's read.
I voluntarily reviewed this advanced reader's copy.
After reading the blurb for this book about a tall, fat, black woman, (I have two of those qualities btw) I was real skeptical if I was going to like it. But my mind is as open as the day is long, so I flip the first page, and I've got to say I have not laughed so hard and felt so connected to two characters as Neidira and John. Zoe, you have gained a true fan of your work. The Enforcer Bears hooked me. You work was going to be my go-to entertainment during my summer when my favorite paranormal author wasn't releasing anything new. Must say I was surprised you deviated from the w/w romance, but you've stolen me with this story. It is truly your most heartfelt, or the one my heart felt the most, and not because the main characters were black, but because this is great work of art consisting of two people who had the greatest of obstacles in front of them, and yet, they came out on top by embracing what made them different. Their differences are what made them into who they were meant to be. Now, I have two favorite paranormal authors. Kudos for me...lol And yes, I'm binge-reading your books and will leave as many reviews as I can.
Neridia Small lives on the shore of Loch Ness and is searching for a man who'll look past her height of 6'6" in her stocking feet. When the date she's on goes horribly wrong she runs out of the restaurant and straight into the arms of sea dragon, John Doe, who's there with his friends from the Alpha Team for Griff's wedding. When Neridia realizes that she's looking up at him, she's surprised and when he turns into a sea dragon in front of her, she runs off. John is surprised and upset to find his mate after all this time and wonders how it'll work due to his vows as a Knight-Poet. Things take a drastic change when he finds out that Neridia is actually the daughter of the Emperor whom he's been looking for. And when assassin shifters come to kill her, John is determined to keep Neridia safe.
I truly enjoyed this book. I was drawn in from the beginning and didn't want to put it down. I love the comradery between the characters and how they fight for each other. The story is well-written with twists and turns. I highly recommend the series and this book. I recommend you read the series in order.
This was different in the fact that it is set on both land and water. The book contains a mystery, assassination and attempts, sharks and sea dragons. I enjoyed it it has happy moments and also some touching ones. John Doe is a knight from Atlantis on the hunt for the emperor. He is attending the wedding of Griff. He is sent to relax, he finds anything but. He goes to Loch Ness to shift into his sea dragon form and dance in the water. While speaking to the water he asks if it knows what he seeks. The reply is come. Neridia has always been very tall and feels out of place. The date she is on goes badly. While running away she knocks over the drinks of some drunks. Standing by the edfe of the loch the drunks find her. she is rescued by a man who turns into a monster. Will John find the emperor for whom he seeks? Will he find Neridia and come to her aid? Will both their lives change? I give this wonderful story 5 stars. "I voluntarily read and reviewed a advanced reader copy without pressure to do so".
FANTASTIC!!! This series is so great. I have enjoyed it so very much. Neridia, at 6'6", has felt her size was a deterrent to ever finding any man she could be with. Every man she ever tries to date is so put off with her size she has almost completely given up. When she flees her latest date because of his reaction to her size, she finds herself by Loch Ness being attacked by 5 drunken men because she knocked over their table in her haste to get out of the bar she had been in. To her amazement she is rescued by a man even bigger than herself. John Doe realizes she is his mate as soon as their hands touch. He is heartbroken because being a Knight-Poet of the First Water he took a vow of chastity and cannot have a mate. Things get even more intense when he discovers she is the daughter of the Emperor he has been searching for two years. With seemingly insurmountable obstacles to overcome, John and Neridia actually do get their HEA but you have to read this book to find out how. I can't recommend this book enough.
OKAY OKAY OKAY--I gotta' review this bullshit. Because it's the most confusingly entertaining thing I've ever listened to.
The audiobook is hilarious. I legitimately stopped listening to it and returned the audiobook to the library because it was so cringeworthy. The narrator has different voices for all the characters, and they're SO DIFFERENT. I convinced myself I couldn't do it and let it go.
Over the next couple days, I just chortled to myself about how terrible it was. Creepily sing-song Sea Dragon, strange mystical order, Loch Ness mythology, weird tall girl who can't defend herself and has zero confidence?
Well. Joke was on me. Because I redownloaded it to finish it. I was so curious about the plot, ya' see. It's so outlandishly weird.
BUT: this is the third in the series. I read it as a stand alone, and while you can do that, it does have characters that have formulated previous attachments in two previous books. I'm reading the first one now and it's cute too.
BUT. If you can suspend your disbelief a Sea Dragon story can be a bit of fun.
