Explores the formal structures and acceptable variations of type as fundamental disseminators of information. This work looks at how different media, and consequent reproduction processes, underpin every aspect of typographic design. It is suitable for student designers as well as professionals in the field.
I never had the opportunity to learn much on typography, aside from a copy-writing class I took in the midst of my classes as an English major. Now that I'm designing for print, this is very helpful. I got this because I wanted to switch copy, in the publications I regularly lay out, from justified to ranged left. I discovered sound reasons for either method, as well as the background and technique behind hyphenation, kerning/tracking, leading, margin, etc.
This is definitely a good start for amateur designers like myself. It taught me a lot that was omitted from my web courses and program manuals.
