Some say all it takes is one day to change a life. Kyla Marshall would beg to differ. She knows all it takes is a single, fiery act of rebellion.
When Kyla accidentally sets an ancient oak tree ablaze, she unknowingly triggers a series of events that would make even the Devil raise an eyebrow. Enter Azazel and Balthazar, two of Lucifer's most notorious Princes of Hell, currently on their annual three-month vacation in a sleepy English village.
Wrapped up in their own bitter feud and sibling rivalry, these demons have no idea they're about to become the catalyst for a woman teetering on the edge of darkness.
Witnessing one of their explosive arguments firsthand, Kyla's dormant rage awakens, threatening to consume her entirely. As she delves deeper into the supernatural world, seeking answers, Kyla discovers her own place within it—and a whole lot of power to go with it.
While the demon brothers trade barbs and blows, Kyla battles her inner demons, struggling to control her newfound abilities before they control her.
But there's a dark, sinister force lurking on the horizon, one that not even the Princes of Hell saw coming.
Can Kyla master her powers before she loses herself to the darkness? Will Azazel and Balthazar stop bickering long enough to help her? Or will they all fall victim to the evil creeping ever closer?
Prepare for a wickedly humorous and devilishly steamy tale of power, darkness, and the thin line between salvation and sin.
If you love your stories with flawed characters, dark twists, and lots of heat then this is the book for you.
I'd love to say that writing has always been in my blood and I owe my strange imagination to a relative I barely knew, but as far as I know, I'm a one of a kind from my family (in more ways than one!!)
So what do I love to write about? Well, whatever takes my fancy to be quite honest. I'm not one to write for the market - I write for myself, what comes from the voices, sorry - muses, in my head, and what I think are unique twists in this repetitive world.
As a result, you can find me scattered across genres from steamy romance to dark fantasy and horror. My only hesitance at the moment is sci-fi but I'm sure I'll tackle it some day!
Conspiracy theories, the supernatural, and the darker side of human nature fascinate me. I adore mythology and ancient history too, and also (only when I'm feeling intellectual) tend to dip my toes into quantum physics to better understand theories of the supposed impossible.
I was drawn to the book blurb but it just didn't hold up for me. I love reading about a love so strong it defeats all odds. That's what I thought I was getting with this book with a demon who falls in love. That's not what you get. You've got two demon brothers who get to come to earth 3 months out of the year and what they do is make play things out of women. Balthazar seemed to have better potential and I held hope he would save this story for me, but I didn't really see any love in this story. I think it was suppose to be portrayed as love but it felt more like lust with a lot of violence. If you want a dark read that has nothing to do with love, then this is the book for you, it just wasn't for me. ARC provided by NetGalley.
The eARC for Sex, Lies & Demon Ties (Dark Desires Series Book I) by C J Laurence was kindly provided to me by the publishing house in exchange for a review.
No one is truly evil but even the darkest soul deserves a little light in its life. 2 stars I couldn't relate to any of the MCs.
This was a weird book. I mean I finished it.. I guess I didn’t hate it, I found it unusually slow to get going and super eye-rolly by the time I was getting to the end. It’s written from the perspective of Azazel, a 2000-some year old demon and early-30s Kyla. I usually like that with a slow burn you get to pick up information about each one of the characters bit by bit as you’re getting to know them and see their past experiences reflected in their current actions, but I don’t even know that I could call this a slow burn, maybe more of a sit-wait-lighter-strike-oh-there’s-the-fire-oh-no-never mind. The way the information was dumped out felt clunky and rushed. It was a least a third of the way into the book before the two main characters met, had three short interactions before the actual action of the story took place, and none of that was until the last quarter. In other news, the addition of other supernatural creatures being just commonplace felt confusing and by the time that came out for the reader, I felt myself being pissed off that it was included at all. Speaking of a piss-off. Kyla’s whole family is awful. In her backstory we learn that 10yrs ago she was in a relationship with a guy who cheated on her and ran away with her mom after pinning her down and giving her an at home coat hanger abortion. Obviously really fucking traumatic. She hasn’t heard from her mom or the guy since, but she also never heard from her grandparents. At a certain point we meet them and they said they heard a different story from their daughter about what happened and it caused them to not want to appear that they were “choosing sides” so they just never reached out. It’s been ten fucking years and you never wanted to talk to your granddaughter to hear how she was doing?? Awful. Then, when they do meet again, it’s once, Grandma drops the bomb that Kyla’s actually a super powerful witch and then she’s like ok, bye! Without teaching her how to actually use her power safely. Very frustrating. Then with Azazel, I feel like there was so much time lost and missed opportunity. There was zero character development because there was hardly anything actually said or done by this character. Really just a bunch or word salad because the only protein was a single meatball. The chaos and lack of clarity of this review is how I feel the story played out. Maybe I didn’t like it as much as I initially said I did. Ok, whatever, I’m finally done it, good enough, if the second book comes up free on kindle maybe I’ll snag it but I’m not paying for the next one.

This just wasn’t doing it for me. I found the writing average, at times a little uncomfortable, at times a bit bad, and overall the story wasn’t well executed, the characters were terrible, the plot construction was full of way too many convenient plot devices, and I couldn’t really find anything worthwhile in the book. It reads like a bad fanfiction where the author is more concerned about forcing a fantasy in her head to play out exactly the way she wants it to than about constructing a worthwhile tale; she’s caught between her desire to tell a tale and her inability—or perhaps unwillingness—to do so in a way that lets this be dark and tantalizing but not border on the repulsive and unenjoyable. I read in about 30% and skimmed the rest, just sighing and rolling my eyes. I know this is supposed to be a darker book, but like… a lot of not okay in any realm stuff went on and I just got worn out super-fast (for example, she gave her two half sisters to the devil just because she hated her mom and their dad, her terrible ex-boyfriend, like in what universe are these two young girls at all responsible for what their terrible parents did? That’s a very close-minded and stupid train of thought that really tanked things for me.) At times I did feel for the heroine, she has gone through some absolutely horrible stuff, but other times she made it hard to give her any empathy. I cared so little for the male leads that I can’t recall their names for the life of me; they had nothing good going for them. Nothing. I don’t know. I’m giving it a 2 because I just can’t salvage much from what I read and skimmed, so take my review with a grain of salt. What I read wasn’t good enough to pull me through and what I skimmed wasn’t good enough to make me go back and keep trying. I can’t give it a 1 because I didn’t read enough of it to know if it’s truly a terrible book or if there was anything redeeming that could bump it up or make me at least have a neutral “I didn’t like it but someone else might” stance, but I can’t give it anything higher because I didn’t find anything really good either in all the skimming and 30% of the book that I did read.
If you want my honest recommendation, find something else. There are far, far better dark themed books or demon lover books out there. Ones that make you actually want to read them from cover to cover.
*I received a copy of this title from Net Galley but in no way does that affect my review*
First of all, I have to say this: Claire, you weave a very different tale to anything I have read to date. I love how your mind works, so keep writing. This is a book that’s worth reading.
So, let’s start from the beginning. Two sexy demon brothers, Balthazar and Azazel, come to Earth for three months every year to find a woman for them, or simply to cause trouble. And that sounds lovely, intriguing, attention grabbing already.
Moving on… Our female MC is a feisty, fiery, cheeky girl named Kyla. Just like any story, they meet and it all goes south. You were expecting it to go well? God, no. This story has a lot of dark elements tied into it and so much interesting lore that you keep on wanting more.
Personally, I would classify it as Dark Fantasy. You need to have a taste for the mixture of horror/romance/erotica/thriller genres to be able to keep up with the winding plot twists that keep you on your toes and the engrossing description. No, do not eat during this story. Some stories need popcorn. This story may make you want to cry into a pillow and call your mommy. It is very graphic. That is not a bad thing. I truly believe this a story that lovers of dark fantasy HAVE to read, if not for the romance and an interesting take on the universe, then for the unique characters and the way they change and morph throughout the story into someone better…or worse.
Is it wrong to root for characters that murder people? To anyone who has not read this story, you will say in your poshest voice, “Why, yes. That is pretty bad.” Read this and I’m pretty sure you’ll question that belief.
This was a very interesting read, I absolutely enjoyed the sassy, spunky Kyla who lived life on her terms and nobody else's. Until the very end it was a typical paranormal romance, but the ending threw everything for loop! It got seriously disturbing out of nowhere, and then went right back to happily every after, which was more than a little odd. I voluntarily reviewed this ARC from Netgalley and it took me by surprise, I didn't expect the twist, and it was honestly kind of nice to have a story break from the traditional exact storyline.
Unleashing demons by CJ Laurence. A good read with likeable characters. I liked Kayla. Didn't like Azazel or Balthazar or Mildred. I hope there is more to come. 4*.
I’m going to start this review by warning that this book is not for the faint-heated. There are scenes of extreme torture, sexual assault and demonology described. If you are someone who is sensitive to such things, then I would advise you to step away and select one of this talented author’s other series, which we also stock in store. If there’s no alarm bells ringing for you, then I’d recommend you read on.
Kyla Marshall is a woman with demons in her past that are having a detrimental effect on her present. After enduring horrific physical and emotional trauma as a teen, she has been left with scars on both the inside and outside. Trying to cope with her day to day existence as best she can, her world is turned upside down when she encounters two demon brothers in their human form, on their annual three month vacation to Earth.
Sexy, funny and thrilling, this book had me gripped from the start. C.J. excels at creating page turners that pull you in and have you desperate to find out what destiny has in store for her characters. As the story unfolds, supernatural secrets are revealed and Kyla gets the opportunity for the revenge that she’s been seeking for years.
If you like your fiction sinful, steamy, and tinged with mystery and mayhem, then look no further than this racy read. I for one can’t wait to see what happens in the second book in the series when it’s released. I have no hesitation in rewarding Demons & Damnation 5 Stars.
Wow! She wasn’t kidding when she said this book dives into the dark side! If you have any triggers, definitely check out the warnings before you start reading. But if you're like me and tend to skip those, keep on reading because this story is a wild ride!
So, let’s get into the thrilling details! The plot revolves around two brothers who were once human but became demons due to their dark past. They get three months off each year from their soul-torturing duties in Hell, and during their eerie holiday in a quaint English village, they encounter Kyla—who’s grappling with her own inner demons. As the brothers clash, Kyla and her friend Sam find themselves caught up in their intense battle.
As Kyla confronts buried emotions, she uncovers shocking truths about herself that lead her to make life-altering decisions. From the very first page, the story spirals into a gripping descent into darkness, unfolding layers of depth and intensity. I found it to be an exhilarating read, and I'm absolutely thrilled to dive straight into the next installment!
This book was gifted to me for my honest review, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
They really need .5 for stars on here. This would've been a 4.5 star books. It takes you by your toes and flips you upside down. There is more to everyone than meets the eye. The brothers have an attitude of Stephan and Dom. I love their banter and taunting each other. Kyla and Sam's relationship remind me of me and my sister. This is fated connections like you've never seen, female rage, revenge, etc. It does get intense at times (Kyla goes through something very traumatizing.)So, do check your trigger warnings. All that to say, I enjoyed every bit. To think....it all started with a discarded cigarette and an old tree burning.
Wow what an amazing story it’s about two brothers Azazel and Balthazar who used to be human but are now demons, and of Kyla who is human until she takes off her ring then she becomes more she has had a horrible heartbreaking life. Sorry guys no spoilers today this story is just too good it’s an original story and I’ve never read anything like this before. A fantastic paranormal story with witches, demons, ghosts, magic, elementals and so much more to keep you entertained and turning the pages and I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read.
This book sure takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions. Between laughing at the banter of the two demon brothers to being utterly crushed by Kyla’s, MFC, past and even the brothers’ pasts. You get all the supernatural fantasy you could want with a healthy dose of trauma. You’ve got morally grey characters and love triangles and soulmates but it’s not overdone. There are definitely heavy and triggering topics so be sure to read through the warnings before you start. Overall a good read and looking forward to book 2.
Unleashing Demons by C.J. Laurence is a wonderful story to read. This is book number one in this wonderful series that I really enjoyed reading very much. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about suspense, fantasy and horror in their stories.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Her life was not bad until she saw demons fighting, they are brothers and now her life is about to change. Their anger seemed to trigger her anger and now she was in danger of losing herself in that anger. Can two demon brothers help her? What will happen if they cannot? See how they get on

When brothers go on vacation together, whether they are demons or not, there are bound to be a few hiccups. I love the banter and humor between the characters. They are likeable and interesting. There were many times throughout the story I said out loud "oh my god" and "well I didn't see that one coming. "
It’s so good!! I did not expect all the revelations but they made the book all the more better. Our MFC has some serious trama from her past but also so does our MMC. I honestly dropped some tears. This isn’t a romance or love story, it’s about our MFC discovering who or what she is and herself and our MMC learning to cope with their pain from the past.
I really enjoyed this story. C J is a gr8 weaver if stories. Sometimes I was rooting for the demons, & other times it was for Kyla. What a tuff quirky female. 4 Thumbs up
I first read this book on Wattpad and loved it. It's worth remembering that it's on the darker side of paranormal romance, so there is no fluffy ending. But if you enjoy your demons dangerous and delicious, as I do, it's a must.
I honeslty loved this book! The story is amazing, the twists and turns I wasn't expecting, Kyla's character development is amazing, I loved seeing her thrive, overall an amazing book, I love this Author, I cannot wait for the series to continue! 🥰
This book had everything! When you think you know what’s going to happen, you second guess yourself. This is such a great book, I highly recommend it to everyone!
I wanted to try a dark romance and this book did not disappoint, it has so much to say and I was sad see it end. Fair warning that it is spicy and might trigger some people.
What an exciting captivating read. Gripping and thrilling and the storyline was very well written. The characters are strong and bring the book to life
This is the first of CJ Laurence’s work that I’ve read.
The cover both appealed to me and intrigued me. The blurb also peaked my interest and made me decide to give it to read.
I like how CJ has put a short section entitled Reader Information, explaining the POV and use of the word magick not magic. It clarifies points which could cause some people issues.
Unleashing demons introduces us to Kyla; she’s the lead female. She’s feisty and has had a pretty rough past. I cannot imagine how she even begun to deal with what’s happened to her.
After an unfortunate accident involving a cigarette we meet Tom and Ben Worthington; or should I say Balthazar and Azazel. These two are Lucifer’s most trusted demons, they are here on their 12-week vacation, looking for women and/or trouble.
I found the characters to be incredibly engaging. They interact well together and grow as the plot unfolds. The more I read the more I begun to understand the feelings and thoughts of Kyla. She deals with a lot, I don’t think that a lesser character would have been able to deal with everything that is suddenly being thrown at her.
The overall story isn’t one of love, it’s one of revenge and in some ways self-discovery too. This isn’t a book for the faint-hearted It has its share of violence and bloodshed. It’s also jam-packed with demons, witches, werewolves and even Lucifer himself makes an appearance.
CJ Laurence’s writing style has a natural feeling pace. The start is a little slow before building up as the action and events unravel before our very eyes!
I’m pleasantly surprised with what I have found in this book. I’m intrigued to know if we will see any more from Kyla in the future.
I’m now looking forward to reading more of CJ Laurence’s work!
If you love a darker, supernatural story and don’t mind some violence and bloodshed then I’d say give this story a chance.
This book was intriguing but I’ll be honest when I say it fell a bit short for me. The catch lines all seem like the kind of book I was going to love and there were parts that really had me. Then there were parts that I just couldn’t get over.
The basic premise is that two demon brothers, Balthasar and Azazel, have a yearly vacation from hell and their jobs as some of Lucifer’s right hand men where they pretty much have the run of wherever they decide to hole up for their holiday. On their latest vacation they decide Lancashire is the place to be, for what reason we never find out. While their they stumble across our heroine Kyla Marshall and what ensues should have been a fun bit of romantic literation, but what is really quite a mess reading wise.
From the get go Kyla kind of rubbed me the wrong way, which I chalked up to being due to something about her past. That intuition was correct to put it mildly. After becoming pregnant by her boyfriend the man proceeds to tie her down and give her an at-home abortion complete with wire coat hanger before he runs off with her mother who he then marries. Blessedly we don’t have to see that part only the emotional aftermath. As the book progressed though Kyla gradually becomes an all-out bloodthirsty crazy who eventually turns murderer. She even wants to go so far as to kill her half-sisters who are the product of her mother and ex-boyfriend’s marriage. This is the woman we’re supposed to be cheering for? By the end of the book I really kind of hated her. I think if the author worked on her character more and made her much more likeable and less psychotic the book would have been miles better.
In the beginning we absolutely can’t stand Azazel. To put it mildly he has no redeeming qualities and appears as psychotic as Kyla turns out to be. They would have been perfect for each other in the villainous way if he hadn’t made a switch for the better gradually through the book. In the end, I liked him loads better than Kyla, although some of his past deeds definitely didn’t make him redeemable enough for me to wish he was sitting next to me in the living room.
Balthasar started out the exact opposite of his brother and I was really thinking he was going to be our main squeeze in the book. Alas I was wrong and while it seems for a while our fickle heroine might end up with the both of them in the end Kyla’s best friend snags him as her man. Where that came from I still can’t figure out, because it was only in the epilogue that we even had Sam and Balthasar in the same room. The author easily could have set up a second book with them as her main couple if she’d desired to do so, but perhaps by the end of the book she hated the plotline as much as we did. In the end he’d done some pretty reprehensible things as well so the psychotic Kyla losing him to the much sweeter Sam wasn’t too hard to swallow.
I enjoyed the author’s writing style I just wish she’d left some of the dark alone. Yes, the guys are demons and we expect them to do some horrible things, particularly in the past but this book really fell short in any romantic capacity and the idea of people, paranormal or not, having many redeeming qualities. I have to say that while I didn’t particularly enjoy the characters themselves I was never bored for a moment. That says something about the flow of the book. I might see what else this author has to offer, although I doubt I’ll be looking into book two of this particular series.
**I received a free ARC of this book for my honest feedback and unbiased review.**
