Well, that was a downer. After the first two books I knew I was in for Yarrow Light. That's ok. The first two had a cool school, interesting magic, fun classes, group shenanigans, battles and progression. Also a love triangle, because romantasy.

There is none of that here. Yes, there is another magic beast. We are told it's very different from the earlier one, yet the bond is described in the same terms. There's red herrings with spies, and in a meeting the prot says there could be more! All grown-ups are struck by her brilliance. So the strategy teacher never thought of that? This spy thread could be solved by a simple question: who told you? But hey, people are acting stupid and not talking... to further plot.

The love triangle too is handled in a totally offhand manner. It does not really matter, folks!
Mystery then. Any more on the prot's father, powers, ancestry? Mum does not know, let's get on with our plot.
Cool magic and more worldbuilding? Neh, just introduce magic gunpowder and let the prot have a brilliant idea to use it - of course the stuff is not part of siege warfare in this world, because grown-ups never thought of that. They TEACH the use, but hey, plot...

There's war. All lessons are fast-tracked, so we don't see much of them, nor much student interaction. Two fun elements of the first two books largely scratched. But by end of term everyone goes home - suddenly the war does not matter anymore. Almost as if it is only... plot.

This has all the weaknesses of the 'magical school' subgenre, plus those of first person narration, plus sub-par plotting and worldbuilding. Also lots of typos. It feels like a rush job.
A DNF series for me.

I’m not sure how to feel about this. I like the general story, but it feels as though there is little to no story development here. It jumps from one action scene to another with a little substance between. Some of the plot seems repetitive, and past plot devices, which saved the day before seem forgotten. The whole story feels rushed too. The main characters are only in their third year, and they are already leading battles?

While the major plot points and story, arc are intriguing and make me want to listen to the final two books in the series, I must say, I am still very disappointed in the lack of character growth, and the rushed pacing, as well as the cringeworthy love triangle that came out out of the blue in book one.

A quick note, I did listen to this on audiobook. While I cannot say anything about typos that I have read and other reviews, I can say that the narration, which was done by AI, was a bit flat and lifeless. And instead of typos, I got a slew of mispronunciations, including at least three different pronunciations of the main character‘s name. Every time I would hear one of these it with jar me out of the story.

The storyline is good. Mostly loving the characters. The main reason this one lost stars was because of the number of glaring typos and errors in this one. I read on kindle so maybe the print version is better. There was also some references that confused me when talking about Stonegarden. It seemed like the reference was actually to Skyborne but that there was a name change scare the name didn’t get corrected in all of the places.

But there are parts in the character development that redundant and the love triangle is weird. Don’t get me wrong, I’m completely invested and want to find out what happens next but hoping for some actual character growth and not just strengthening in skill.

It's War

So many questions, who can be trusted? Since I read a lot of mysteries, there was one person that came across as the spy for me. Hopefully peace will come for these poor fighting students in the next book.
