Old Mrs. Jeavons and old Mr. Yearby had been feuding for years, sosparks were bound to fly when Mr. Yearby's great-nephew Tim fell in love with Mrs. Jeavons' nurse-companion, Kate. There were stillfurther complications - Kate was not so sure of her feelings, and that maddening David Leyton occupied much of her thoughts. Then there was the very chic, very charming Mrs. D. Leyton who had justbooked into the local inn, and was seeing an awful lot of David.
Not the edition that I received. Here is what the back of my edition says:
'The feud between the Montagues and Capulets was no more bitter than that raging between old Mrs. Jeavons and Jr. Yearby - so when Mr. Yearby's great-nephew Tim fell in love with Mrs. Jeavons' nurse-companion Kate, there was bound to be trouble. But did Kate care enough for Tim for it to matter anyway?'
Tim doesn't have a backbone in the story. And Kate is just obnoxious. And the plot is pretty simple to guess. It's actually pretty lame and I just kept rolling my eyes during the entire book. Easy read, but it's pretty boring and annoying.
I did have a fun time making fun of this book with a few of my friends though.
2 1/2 stars really. This is a bland story with very little happening. I usually like Lucy Gillen heroines, but this one had little going for her. The hero (David) is 25 and is still seeing the OW till the day before the happy ending - she is obsessed with him and names a boat they use after their joint names AND tries to run them out of the road when she sees the hero with the heroine. Yet he's only lived there for 5 months and the OW was away for 3 of those. Also the OM is pathetic. It's not unpleasant, but you can see it's a very early effort for the author.
Kate is a companion to an old lady who's feuding with her neighbour. She’s on friendly terms with the neighbour’s nephew which doesn’t please the old man himself or his farm manager David.
After reading Good Morning Doctor Houston a book of my mum's which I found okay and the very first of hers I discovered. I found this gem on the market and I found it to be a marvellous story with stand out main characters similar to taming of the shrew. I loved it and it remains a keeper in my bookshelves to this day top 5 favourite of Lucy Gillen novels.
However this is the US Harlequin cover and not the UK one which i much prefer.
