Just weeks ahead of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #50, get the first taste of THE RETURN OF THE GOBLIN! Plus, prepare for the next evolutionary step of the Ultimate Universe as a powerful new hero debuts! But it doesn't end there! Oh no, there are some surprises up our sleeve on this one!
I’ve been liking this Ultimate Universe story a lot so far. It’s expanding so quickly and getting so fun to keep up with. That story was really the only reason I wanted this, I did read the others but they didn’t interest me at all. Most Spider-Man stuff just isn’t interesting to me.
In the first story, Peter Parker is out on a date that goes wrong, when he is targeted and can’t explain to his date why he disappeared when Spiderman showed up. The next story is set on Earth-6160 and has Captain America, Iron Lad and Doctor Doom investigating a secret storage facility, who then free the Human Torch to join their Ultimate Marvel team. Lastly, we get a short peek into the Venom world with a young Dylan Brock who then meets an older grizzled version of himself.
This book contains previews of Amazing Spider-man, Peter Parkers date us interrupted by "killer" robots. As much as I hate seeing the devolved dumb down Peter Parker, it was good to see Spider-man win a fight. The Ultimates are on a recruitment drive. The trouble is it is against the Maker's wishes. Finally, a cryptic visit and another cryptic visitor for Dylan Brock could be the prelude to a Venom War.
3.5 stars. The Spider-Man story seems to be teasing a certain character coming back to form. The Ultimates story was interesting. Definitely gonna check that out. The Venom story? I have no idea what’s going on here but it’s setting up a new event from Ewing.
Now the trade that I’m rereading this from has this issue placed after Ultimate Universe #1 and before the first issue of the proper Ultimates title, but I’d recommend reading this after issue #3 of the Ultimates because that’s where I think it fits in the timeline: Captain America is thawed in the first issue, and we see the Human Torch appears in issue #6, so it’s gotta take place in between then. Anyways, this is a cool issue because we get some cool lore, like the genocide of the Inhumans, but it’s interesting that we see Weapon X’s adamantium skeleton despite Ultimate Wolverine being the Winter Soldier in Eurasia. Questions for later. But still, we get the original Human Torch, Jim Hammond! What a cool pick for this roster! I also love to see how the Hand and Damage Control are depicted in this universe. It’s just really cool world-building, and we’re blessed with Juan Frigeri’s beautiful artwork. What more can you ask for?
The Ultimates is the big winner here. It looks like this series will be terrific with the Ultimates operating as freedom fighters in a world under The Maker's control. The Spider-Man story was a bit fluffy with Pete fighting some knock off Chucky Cheese robots. The Venom story has been incomprehensible from the getgo. Not sure what Al Ewing is doing over there but it's over my head.
I think I might have to give this series a chance first I love the idea of doctor doom being on the good side and the drawings were so detailed and the style is so vivid and right up my alley. The second comic was also extremely intriguing I’m geeked about venom war because that has to be one of the absolute coolest storyline too I’m just so psyched for both of these continuations.
The Spider Man five nights at Freddy's style story was cute and entertaining. The Ultimates looked pretty boring to me. Venom War sounds cool, but it didn't really provide much to kick off my interest. So one good and two not good equals three stars.
Two things to take from this free comic book: 1. Stegman should have done more Amazing Spider-Man, his kinetic art style is tailor made for this character. 2. The new Ultimates book looked promising, even if Hickman was not writing it.
I enjoyed the first volume of the Ultimates….went wtf with the second ….third ….ok….fourth…..sooo vampires ….but this one ….I don’t know …….is it worth it ?
