She bites her nails as she steals a glance at the stranger in the pickup truck beside her. She trusted him when he offered her a ride, but now, as he turns onto a deserted road leading into a dark pine forest, she knows she’s made a huge mistake.
Special Agent Beth Katz races through the dense Montana woodland toward a small, isolated cabin. She’s investigating the disappearance of her partner Dax Styles’s sister who went missing as she walked home from school, and Beth finally has a solid lead. Outside the decrepit building, her heart pounds wondering what she will find on the other side of the door.
A young woman with long brown hair and cornflower blue eyes, just like Dax’s, shakes in the kitchen. It’s clearly Ginny, but before Dax can speak to his long-lost sister, Beth hears a noise from outside. In a rundown outbuilding, they discover another young girl, reported missing just weeks before. Dressed in a thin nightie, Ava cowers as Beth breaks into the padlocked room. Her captor has fled, but Beth will use every skill she’s got to track him down.
Working night and day, Beth uncovers more cases of young girls taken from remote roads near their homes. Twelve-year-old Shiloh Weeks vanished as she walked home just days ago. Her story remarkably similar to Ginny and Ava’s.
Beth and Dax are on a mission to stop to this twisted individual and save any new girls from being taken into the woods and lost forever. But when the trail leads them to a man impersonating a police officer to gain the trust of his victims, will Dax hand him over or take matters into his own hands?
Another hit in the Beth Katz police procedural series. A really good plot with a personal connection to one of the FBI agents - Dax and Beth are trying to locate Dax's long time missing sister.
I loved that there's a lot of relationship building and development between Beth and Dax and also more insights into Beth and her other relationships, including past trauma.
Importantly, this also featured the Tarot Card Killer - a key theme across each book - and humanises Beth as a psychopath/serial killer a bit more... I never know how to feel about this aspect. Ultimate moral dilemma.
I really enjoy D.K. Hood's style of writing and find myself struggling to put her books down every time and wanting a new release straight away!
I'll be picking up and recommending any Katz or Kane and Alton series books - the interconnectedness is fantastic.
Thanks so much to Debra for the buddy read (and for being so patient with my reading pace of late). Hopefully many more D.K. Hood buddy reads to come! Please check out Debra's thoughts on this one too and her exceptional summary of the story.
Publication date: 31 July 2024.
⚠️ Please check TWs online, notably the plot centres around a paedophile ring - thankfully with few details though ⚠️
Thanks to the author, bookouture and netgalley for my eARC in exchange for my honest review.
Gripping, intense, shocking, and hard to put down! Forgotten Girls is the brilliant new addition to the Special Agent Beth Katz series! I loved being back in this intensely personal investigation with Beth and Dax!
Using her computer skills, Beth has found a lead in the missing persons case of Dax's younger sister, Ginny, who went missing while walking home from school. Dax was a child when Ginny went missing and he has never given up hope of finding out what happened to her. When they get to the isolated cabin in Montana where Ginny is believed to be living, they not only find Ginny but another missing girl as well! Unfortunately, their captor was able to get away. Not willing to give up, Beth and Dax uncover more cases involving missing girls.
The stakes are incredibly high in this book, and I enjoyed the detective work that was done as well as getting to see a more vulnerable side of Beth. I also enjoyed how Beth and Dax continue to grow their working relationship and we get character development.
There is also a fair amount of tension, suspense, danger, twists, threats, and reveals in this book. The plot of this book involves predators, and it is dark and disturbing but D.K. Hood does no go into detail or provide any graphic scenes. Fans of this riveting series will be happy to see the Tarot Card killer makes a small appearance in this book!
I was fully invested in this addictive book and did not want to put Forgotten Girls down! The characters are fantastic and play very well off each other. I also enjoy D.K. Hood's writing and this series is fantastic! I'm already looking forward to the next book in the series!
***A brilliant buddy read with Bec (becbingesbooks)! Please read her brilliant review as well to get her thoughts on this book!
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
I have been following this series from the start. Both Beth and Dax are good characters. Though Beth’s introduction in the first book was a little sensationalist, her character has shaped up well over the series.
Beth Katz and Dax Styles are FBI agents in Rattlesnake Creek. The previous books briefly mention that Dax’s sister Ginny Styles had disappeared many years back. This book tackles that case. When Dax was 8 years old, he and his younger sister Ginny were wandering outside. Ginny disappeared, not to be seen again. His parents blamed Dax and his dad died shortly after. His mother continued to live a tortured existence, as did Dax himself. Beth gets a clue based on using AI software to narrow down the possibilities for her grown-up identity. They strike gold as they find Ginny alive, but what she has gone through over the years is very disturbing. She is not the only one, and Dax and Beth realize they are dealing with a ruthless and sinister paedophile kidnapping ring & adoption racket. The gang realizes their identity might get uncovered, and Dax & Beth are under attack. There is also the elusive Tarot Killer who lurks in the background.
This is a story with a very strong (dark) plot. Beth & Dax make for a great team, with their understanding of each other developing greater depth. The usual pattern – Beth’s drive to find the evil guys, and Dax’s methodical mature approach has some change in this one, as for Dax this case is personal. The story moves fast. I also liked that the Tarot Killer makes only a fleeting appearance, allowing the larger story to take centre stage. Unlike the previous stories, this one does not resolve everything – not sure if it will be picked up in the next book.
My rating: 4.25 / 5.
Thanks to Netgalley, Bookouture and the author for a free electronic review copy.
D.K. Hood has a knack for writing great thrillers, filled with action and depraved killers who have little care for anything other than their own personal preferences. All the while, FBI Special Agent Beth Katz has made it her business to keep those who need protection as safe as can be. In a gripping story about the perils of girls sold and traded, Special Agent Katz seeks to break a paedophole ring open and stop those who would treat girls like trading cards. Hood offers a dark tale with great action.
Nervous and worried about what will happen next, she peers over at the man who agreed to give her a ride after an apparent family emergency. Trust has evaporated as the truth becomes more apparent and her future could soon be snuffed out!
Special Agent Beth Katz has a lead and rushes into wooded area of Montana to save a victim. Hoping to find her partner’s sister, Special Agent Katz works with Dax Styles before all hope is lost. Having vanished in her way home from school, the young girl never made it and has not been seen since With Special Agents Katz and Styles arrive at an abandoned cabin and can only hope there is something positive that awaits them on the other side of the door.
The girl is now a young woman with features similar to Dax’s, though she is in bad shape. Shaking and crying openly, she can hardly compose herself. Special Agent Katz hears a noise in the outbuilding, which ends up being another young girl, reported missing only a few weeks before. Ava is shaking and cowers in fear as Spexial Agent Katz grants her freedom. Vowing to find her abductor, Special Agents Katz and Styles begin the hunt that could take them down dark and winding rabbit holes.
Working non-stop to locate a ring of paedophiles and abductors, Special Agents Katz and Styles find leads, but are always one step behind those who are committing these crimes. They locate yet another young girl whose story is similar to the others, with gruesome details.
This is a case that will require dedication and determination, with a sick group of men who are swapping these girls trading cards, discarding any offspring to adoption agencies. The depraved desires of these men leave victims emotionally abused and empty shells of themselves. However, working undercover may help the FBI uncover the truth and neutralise the core of this group. However, like the Hydra, one head being cut off may only force two more to emerge. Hood delivers a dark story that could be one of the best she’s penned in recent years.
Crime thrillers are a specialty of D.K. Hood and she has many novels to prove her worth. In a story that balanced dark crimes with dedicated authorities, the narrative builds with each passing chapter. Hood develops a great theme and lets the narrative momentum thicken the plot as the truth comes to light. Great characters illustrate the contrasting aspects of the book and keep the reader fully engaged until all can be revealed.
The plot helps shape this story, adding fear and tension to an already strong piece. Hood provides some twists and surprises for the attentive reader, peppering some less than predictable aspects into this novel. Hood has never kept the surprises to a minimum, providing a story that has all the needed elements for an entertaining read. I am eager to see where things are headed.
Kudos, Madam Hood, for yet another strong piece that had me gripped!

My love for Beth Katz, i can not put into words!! This instalment involves finding Dex's missing sister. Which unwittingly uncovers a massive pedophilia ring. On the case now, Beth and Dex are prime targets as they are getting too close to finding out who's is at the centre of this ring. Needing help, they call in local fellow FBI Jo and Carter, and together, they set up a not so sanctioned undercover sting. The only question is, will the taro killer get to any of the suspects before they do? Honestly this is one of those crimes that has been written and rewritten about, it can often be far to intense or brushed over however this was written somewhere in between with a clear focus on the victims not the pervs. This is a strength of D.K Hood, and I always know before I pick up a new instalment of this or her other series, it's going to be well researched and written!! This book had me laughing and crying throughout, plus I was super on edge. The chapters are all linked to different main characters throughout, including the kidnapped girls. I always enjoy a multi narrated book as I get a feeling for each of the main characters throughout, plus it keeps me obsessed with the protagonist, I.e. Beth. The author makes each different place clear to visualise through creative descriptive writing, which made the final chapter intense as the scenery was so clear to see!
What I love about this series is trying to guess if people suspect Beth and when or if her secret has come out. This instalment had me wondering this more than any others had!
Forgotten girls, although shorter than the previous books, was jammed packed with drama from start to finish. I recommend if you enjoy the works of B.R Sprangler, Stacey Green, Debra Webb, or Lisa Regan and ofxoursr if you have read the D.K Hood Kane and Alton series This was an easy 5*.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review "Forgotten Girls", the fourth book in D.K. Hood's 'Special Agent Beth Katz' series (which NetGalley mistakenly labels 'Detective' Beth Katz). Beth Katz is an FBI agent with a dark history and an even darker secret. In this instalment, Beth and her partner Dax Styles finally solve the mystery of that happened to Dax's little sister all those years ago, when she disappeared while on an outing with her little brother. But the solution to that mystery takes them into the dark territory of human trafficking and underground, illegal adoptions for nefarious purposes, and the extremes to which the perpetrators go to protect themselves and control their captives. And when a local girl goes missing under circumstances similar to Ginny Katz and many others, the team are determined to use any means necessary to break up this gang. Zeroing in on the ringleaders puts both Beth and Dax squarely in the crosshairs of criminals who will stop at nothing to continue their criminal enterprise, which leads to multiple assassination attempts - all, thankfully, foiled (lots of action in this one!). As their efforts progress, they rely heavily on the additional assistance of Jo Wells, Ty Carter and Bobby Kalo from a neighbouring FBI outpost - and whom dedicated readers of D.K. Hood's other series will know well - in unravelling the cabal. You won't want to miss this one.
Another great crime thriller from DK Hood. Beth thinks she’s found Styles’ missing sister but after years of searching for her, he tries to not get his hopes up. When they go and visit the woman who Beth thinks is his sister, it’s clear there’s recognition between the two of them. What they don’t realise is that Ginny was abducted by some men who are part of a wider paedophile ring and they will both soon be targeted by them. Beth and Styles are attacked in their motel but it makes them more determined to find the ring leaders of this sick group. This is a gripping crime thriller that I really enjoyed. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
In "Forgotten Girls," FBI Special Agent Beth Katz is back, delving into the cold case of Stiles' sister's disappearance from over two decades ago. The case thrust Beth and Stiles into a thrilling and dangerous quest that puts lives on the line, promises shocking revelations, and challenges the very notion of right and wrong.
In the previous books, readers learn that Stiles' sister went missing over twenty years ago. They also discover how he has carried the blame all these years. Beth decides to help him find closure by investigating the disappearance. Beth, utilizing her adept computer skills, uncovered the shocking truth that Stiles' sister was still alive. This revelation unraveled a series of dark secrets, leading them to expose a network involved in pedophilia, human trafficking, and an illegal adoption ring.
The author really ramped up the suspense and Danger in this installment. My heart was lodged in my throat throughout the entire story. The villains are merciless and will do anything to maintain their operations and the influx of money. The case was deeply personal for both Beth and Stiles. We delve into Beth's history and discover why she is so deeply invested in this case. For Stiles, it reopened old wounds.
The Tarot Killer's brief appearance is so intense that it will have readers holding their breath as the scene unfolds.
Forgotten Girls is book four in the Special Agent Beth Katz series by D.K. Hood. Special agent Beth Katz finally got a lead on her partner, special agent Dax Styles's sister Ginny, who disappeared twenty-five years ago. When they arrived at the isolated cabin in Montana, they found Ginny and another young girl, Ava, locked in a shed at the back of the property. On further investigation, Beth and Dax found more cases of young girls going missing, similar to Ginny and Ava. When they realised a recent case of the disappearance of a twelve-year-old, Shiloh Weeks, was the same, it became a mission for them to find the people who were involved in this terrible crime. Will special agent Dax Styles forget about his values and training and take things into his own hands? The readers of Forgotten Girl will continue to follow their investigation to discover what happens.
I enjoy reading books by D.K. Hood, so I was looking forward to reading a new series by her called Special Agent Beth Katz. However, I did follow my usual practice of starting in the middle of the series instead of the beginning, so I will go back and read the first book to learn about the main characters. I was not disappointed in reading Forgotten Girls; it was a fantastic book. Reading this book started me thinking about the problems for families when their children go missing and they are not able to find closure.
I love D.K. Hood's portrayal of her characters and how they intertwine throughout this book. Forgotten Girls is well-written and researched by D.K. Hood. I like the description of the settings of Forgotten Girls, which allowed me to imagine being part of the book's plot.
Oh, what a brilliant read. I absolutely love this author’s work, so as soon as I received this it jumped straight to the top of my TBR pile. It's all very personal this time, as with Beth’s help, Styles has found his sister who went missing when they were young children. You are immediately immersed in the horrifyingly brilliant plot that twists and turns as those with too much to lose will do anything to stop them. Again, nice to have the crossover of characters from the Jane and Alton series, especially the tension that Beth feels around Jo as she fears her alter ego will be uncovered. There is also nice character development as we begin to see a softer side to Beth and her relationship with Styles. As usual the author blows it out if the water, I genuinely did not put the book down. This series has so much more to give and I can't wait to read it.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy of this book.
DBI agents Beth and Styles are a good team. When Beth manages to trace the whereabouts of Styles’ sister, who has been missing since childhood, they stumble upon a child abuse/exploitation ring. Beth uses her cyber skills to try to get to the bottom of it and find the ringleaders, but they are always one step ahead. Carter and Jo are called in and the team investigates.
Oh my goodness DK Hood take a bow. Another completely addictive thriller. I love these characters. Beth’s wrestle with her conscious and bad side and now the introduction of Styles not following the straight path was fab. So many twists and turns in this. I couldn’t put it down at all. I also love the crossover with characters from the author’s other series. Thoroughly enjoyed this and highly recommend.
Forgotten Girls is the fourth book in the Beth Katz series by D.K. Hood and it is fantastic! I made the mistake of starting this book late one night and was up half the night reading to find out what would happen! This book will consume you, whether you're reading it or thinking about it. I absolutely loved the book and it kept my heart in my throat for most of it. You will be on edge wondering how Beth is going to get out of it this time. Forgotten Girls is my favorite book in this fantastic series.
In this book you get answers about what happened to Dax's sister when they were kids. She vanished down by the river one day when she followed Dax who was going fishing. Dax hid from her to play, but when Ginny vanished he felt terrible and that guilt has never left him. Beth told Dax she would look into it as she is a cybercrime genius and has access to the dark web. When Beth thinks she has a lead, she and Dax go to investigate. I won't go into detail here, but you finally get some answers. Dax and Beth are investigating missing girls in this book and are drawn into a much larger network of girls that have vanished.
Beth was in foster care and has terrible memories of being abused. This case really gets to her as she wants to find and help these girls. Will Beth and Dax be able to crack this sinister network open? When a group of guys show up to take Beth and Dax out will they be able to fight them off? Will Beth and Dax be okay? They're getting too close and someone is going to a lot of trouble to protect the network. Can Beth and Dax get answers before more girls are taken? Will they find the girls before it's too late? Forgotten Girls is available on July 31 and should go to the top of your TBR pile! This book can be enjoyed as a standalone but will mean more to those that have read the first 3 books. I'd like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy of Forgotten Girls in exchange for a fair review! I hope D.K. Hood is busy writing book 5 in the series because I can't wait to read it! I rate Forgotten Girls 5 stars with my very highest recommendation! #ForgottenGirls
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this awesome book

Special Agent Beth Katz races through the dense Montana woodland toward a small, isolated cabin. She’s investigating the disappearance of her partner Dax Styles’s sister and Beth finally has a solid lead. Her captor has fled. Th fourth outing for Beth & Dax & another edge of seat read. Whilst it could easily be read on its own I’m loving how relationships are developing especially Beth & Dax’s. The pace is good & the descriptions very good & although it has some dark themes there aren’t graphic scenes. There are twists & turns as well as tension & suspense. A very good addition to the series I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own
jeez louise! I do LOVE this series - I love how dark Ms Hood goes with this series, I love that she can go even darker - and nothing is off limits!
We even have a crossover!!!! Yes!! Jenna and Dave turn up but Jo, Carter and Kalo too! Yay!
Dax gets a completion to his past, but it was horrible how we got there. I hated how his parents treated him. Some points I actually gasped out loud!! I was listening to the audiobook as to me, this is how I "read" this series. I think even Lauryn Allman was shocked initially, but she was a pro.
I do fear how many more times Beth will be lucky. There were a couple of moments and I was like oh my god, this is it, isn't it? Beth is evolving, she's becoming more human, and there is a spark. A spark that you can tell both are resisting, my heart is already breaking for what may or may not come.
I struggled to pause this audiobook - and I blitzed it during the course of one working day. I just needed to know how it would end, and what the heck was going on! I just wasn't expecting that ride!
People say favoritism is not a good thing, but hey I am only human. So I cannot help myself and I just have to repeat once more this author is on top of my list.
Each and every time she regales me with an excellent story that often makes me shudder. I know it's fiction, but those things also happen in the real world. Fortunately the fictional victims can count on Beth, Dax and other recurring characters to come to the rescue. They will fight tooth and nail until they have uncovered every little detail and put a stop to the culprit(s).
The world could have stopped turning and I would not have noticed it. That's how deep I was engrossed in the book.
The story, the characters, the writing style are all top notch. I like the way Beth and Dax think and although I know it's not the political correct way it's often the only way to make it all go away once and for all.
Addictive is the least I can say. Loved it. 5 stars
Dax's sister disappeared when they were kids, has his partner Beth found a viable lead? This clue leads them into the dangerous world of stolen children, a pedophile ring and illegal adoptions. It's so big someone wants them taken out before they unravel this crime. We see another vulnerable side to Beth but it doesn't stop her alter ego taking action. I really love all the characters at work in this story, the police investigative work and the fight against such dark and evil players. Great story, I highly recommend this series.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
You can definitely read this as a standalone as the author recaps the characters past and relationship perfectly.
I was so happy to be back in Rattlesnake Creek with Beth and Dax and even more happy that the case is about Dax and his sisters disappearance because I’ve been eager to learn more about her and the circumstances around her disappearance.
Reading this story gave me such an adrenaline rush, so much happened plus Beth & Dax had so much to investigate and the case just kept on getting more and more complex.
This harrowing case had a profound effect on Beth because it echoed her past in foster care and we got to learn more about what she went through and another reason why she is like she is but we got to see her letting her guard down with Dax, which I adored.
It’s another thrilling story that will keep you engaged until the very last page.
This is the 4th book I read of the series and it seems like it's getting even better to follow The detective Beth Katz. The only way this book could be better would be if written in 1st person POV, but that is just a personal preference. I am very impatient to read more of the adventures of Beth Katz and Styles and I want to know what will happen with Styles' sister as well !
Thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
Title: Forgotten Girls Author: D. K. Hood Series: Special Agent Beth Katz #4 Publisher: Bookouture Genre: Crime Thriller Pub Date: July 31, 2024 My Rating: 4.3 . Stars Pages: 327
If you are new to this series ~ Special agent Beth Katz is an FBI agent in DC who is good at tracking down psychopathic serial killers. She knows how their mind works as she has had first-hand experience as her own father was a serial killer. Beth is very intelligent as well as clever- in fact is like a chameleon when it comes to working undercover. She is excellent in many occupations including pole dancing. She looks young and can pass for someone much younger. When Beth takes down a serial killer she leaves a Tarot card. Yes! She is the “Tarot Serial Killer”.
Her DC partner suspects that she has a dark side and believes she needs a psych evaluation. She failed the psych test and told the evaluation will be reviewed in a year but in the meantime she is transferred out of DC to the FBI Field post in Rattlesnake Creek, Montana.
This story starts with Beth Katz and her partner Dax Styles heading to a small cabin in e Montana’s woodland. They are investigating the disappearance of Dax’s sister Ginny who went missing ten years ago when Dax was 8 years old.
The Prologue tells us that Ginny and Dax when finishing one Sunday afternoon after going to church service that morning. Ginny would prefer reading to fishing but does what her mother asks and goes. Somehow Ginny and Dax become separated. Ginny is alone. She is approached by a policeman and told her brother is fine but they were sent to pick her up as something bad happened to her parents. She walks with them but see that the car they are approaching is NOT a police cruiser. Ginny has not been seen since that day.
Beth has a lead by using AI software for the possibilities of what Ginny might look like now. It worked and they find Ginny alive, but Beth and Dax realize that they are dealing with a ruthless pedophile kidnapping ring and adoption racket. Beth finds this just may call for the help of ‘the Tarot Killer’.
Although this is a dark story, it kept me turning pages.
I am a fan and follow several series with smart strong females- Melinda Leigh’s - Bree Taggert, Lisa Regan’s-Josie Quinn, Linda Castillo’s-Kate Burkholder, Elly Griffiths -Ruth Galloway, James Patterson’s-Lindsey Boxer, and of course,- D.K Hood’s - Beth Katz!
Want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for this early eGalley. Publishing Release Date scheduled for July 31, 2024.
Forgotten Girls is book 4 in the series of Beth Katz written by D.K.Hood
The subject matter is a difficult one to read about but D.K.Hood did a fabulous job. The subject is child trafficking, pedophilia, cyber crimes, sex slavery, slavery, buying and selling of babies and children and much much more. This is a very well written book and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I am very interested in all the subject matters and in learning more about them so maybe more of us can in fact can help. I truly encourage everyone to read this book and tell all your friends and family about it.
Dax and his sister are headed down to the river so Dax can go fishing. He sees they are getting close and he takes off like a rocket. Ginny Dax's sister yells at him to stop. When she gets to the river he isn't there and she can't see him anywhere but his fishing pole is. She hears a sound and turns very slowly around and sees a very tall man standing there. He is a police officer so she thinks she trust him. She asks him if he has seen her brother and tells her that that his partner has him. He also tells him that her parents are both dead and now he needs to take her some place safe as the killer is now after her. That is the last time Dax sees his sister.
Present time Dax is now an FBI agent he is working with his partner Beth Katz. Beth has her own past such as her father was and is a serial killer and is in prison. Beth is helping Dax to try to find and his sister Ginny. They get a small hit and decide to follow it. they get the permission to travel and check out the lead. They are headed to Louan, Montana. They go the address they have for the girl named Rene and it is really Ginny. They realize that they have opened up a bees nest when they take her and her little boy out of there and put them in protective custody. They learn of the man that took Ginny was the man she was still living with and then to their surprise a doctor that helped her give birth to not one baby but 5 babies. It takes you down some very dark hallways from here and Beth will surprise you and you might even thank her and wish she were real. You are going to be pulling for these girls and wonder how many children out there right now are going through similar things. I know it's a very scary world out there. This is one of those books that you will not be putting down or forgetting anytime soon!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this eARC.
In “Forgotten Girls,” D.K. Hood delivers another gripping installment in the Detective Beth Katz series, blending suspense, emotion, and relentless action into a narrative that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. This fourth book in the series not only meets but exceeds the high expectations set by its predecessors.
The story plunges us into the dense Montana woodlands, where Special Agent Beth Katz is on a desperate mission to find her partner Dax Styles’s missing sister, Ginny. The tension is palpable from the first page as Beth races against time, uncovering a series of abductions that lead her to a chilling discovery.
Beth Katz shines as a protagonist. Her determination, intelligence, and emotional depth make her a compelling character. Dax Styles, her partner, adds another layer of complexity to the story, especially as he grapples with personal stakes in the investigation. The dynamic between Beth and Dax is both professional and deeply personal, adding richness to the narrative.
Hood’s writing is crisp and engaging. The pacing is perfect for a thriller, with short, punchy chapters that make it hard to put the book down. The descriptive passages bring the eerie Montana setting to life, enhancing the suspense. Hood masterfully balances action with moments of introspection, allowing readers to connect with the characters on a deeper level.
“Forgotten Girls” explores themes of trust, resilience, and justice. The psychological depth of the characters, particularly the victims, is handled with sensitivity and realism. Hood doesn’t shy away from the darker aspects of human nature, but she also highlights the strength and courage of those who fight against it.
“Forgotten Girls” is a standout addition to the Detective Beth Katz series. It’s a must-read for fans of crime thrillers who appreciate well-crafted plots, strong character development, and a story that keeps you guessing until the very end.
For anyone looking to dive into a nail-biting, heart-pounding thriller, “Forgotten Girls” is a perfect choice. Be prepared to lose sleep over this one!

The previous books in this series have all mentioned that Dax was just eight when his sister, Ginny, disappeared without a trace. Beth had been using AI to find clues to what Ginny might look like now. They got a result, Ginny was found, but she has a new identity, and she's been brainwashed by the man who had held her captive. But finding Ginny has opened an even bigger paedophile ring of kidnappers and an adoption scam.
I love everything about a new novel from D.K. Hood, whether it's the long-running Detectives Kane and Alton series, or her new series featuring Special Agent Beth Katz and Dax Styles. But Beth is no ordinary FBI Agent, she's also a serial killer. Where the author gets her inspiration from, I have no idea, but I hope she keeps finding it. These books are addictive, fast-paced, and you never know where the story is going to take you.

I would like to thank #NetGalley #Bookouture and the author #DKHood for my ARC of #ForgottenGirls in exchange for an honest review.
4.5🌟stars This suspenseful FBI investigation into child trafficking in Montana and beyond kept up a fast pace and I liked the way the bigger trafficking problem became personal for FBI Special Agents Dax Styles and Beth Katz. There's a definite hour glass emptying feeling for the new victims and action and danger aplenty.
Dax lost his older sister Ginny when he was only eight when she disappeared, a suspected kidnapping victim, and he has blamed himself ever since. In this story, Beth, a computer whiz, turns up information that identifies what happened to her and it links to a huge, sustained criminal operation abusing and selling children for huge profits. Styles is looking for revenge for his sister; Beth is planning to eliminate the mastermind; both are determined to dismantle the operation and rescue the victims.
For me, the multiple tentacles of the criminal activities, including foster care abuse, illegal adoption and auctioning rings, got a bit overwhelming. The parts of the plot that focused on specific victims, how they were tricked by their abductors and their fight to survive were some of my favorites. I also liked that Beth Katz, self described as a psychopath, has developed a bit of a conscience since the early books in the series. Not that she's any less prone to kill the bad guys to ensure they don't escape, but she seems conflicted about the growing pile of secrets she hides from Styles and her fellow agents as her alter ego the Tarot Killer takes matters into her own hands.
The investigation and pursuit were thrilling, but the character development for Styles and Katz made me want to read more.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.
TRIGGER WARNING: child sex abuse and trafficking FBI agent Beth Katz has been searching for her partner Dax's lost sister who vanished years ago. Finally she has found Ginny but it isn't the reunion she and Dax wanted. Ginny has been brainwashed by her captor and helps him to traffic other girls for a paedophile ring. Beth's serial killer instinct is fired up to seek revenge for the innocent victims... Forgotten Girls is the 4th book to feature FBI agent and serial killer Beth Katz. Her alter ego is The Tarot Killer who kills other killers rather than sending them to prison. Dax and Beth are thrilled that his sister has been found but there are huge repercussions and the agents begin an operation to catch the paedophiles. Thankfully, despite the dark content, there are no graphic scenes or imagery although we do see Beth's sickened reaction to the videos she sees. There are two key suspects who go on the run so Beth and Dax along with other agents use the latest technology to track them down. But the paedophile ring is huge and rich and the team are in constant danger. This case is intensely personal for Dax and he wants to make the perpetrators suffer. Beth and Dax grow closer in this book as she had finally learned to trust and crave human contact. This slows down the pace a little. Beth's secret serial killer persona doesn't appear until later in the book and I was impatient! She does have lots of violent attacks to contend with throughout the book but these are all in the line of duty and don't have the usual impact. Forgotten Girls is an enjoyable instalment in the series but I want to see more of Beth's dark persona!
I am really enjoying this series - I like Beth Katz and Styles and the authors descriptions of the landscape and small communities are very good. Forgotten Girls is a good and engaging read although compared to the previous books in this series I felt it lacked the edginess and thrills that I'm used to from this author. Here Katz and Styles investigate a case where Styles has a personal connection to a victim - can he remain objective? Previous characters make an appearance and I liked seeing two of them feature more in the story. Beth is less aloof and more open with Styles - she knows he has her back even when their actions are not strictly by the book. She almost seems to appear vulnerable which isn't how I normally see her. Will she be able to keep her dark side hidden though? I enjoyed this read, I like the authors writing style and descriptions of her characters and they become alive in my mind when reading. The plot is good and all to believeable today and thankfully sensitive issues are dealt with carefully and without too much detail. I'd have liked to see more of Beth's dark side though. I also felt the ending seemed abrupt and a little rushed. Saying that though, I'll want to read the next book, I like how Beth and Styles characters are developing and this series has certainly piqued my interest and I want to see what DK Hood has in store for them next! I'd recommend this book and would say read the series from the beginning to get to know the characters from the start.
FBI Agent Beth Katz is back with a bang! And a case she has been determined to solve since being assigned to Rattlesnake Creek field office. That of her friend and colleague missing sister Ginny Styles.
And thanks to Beth's skills with a computer she is able to find a lead. One that has her believing Ginny is alive and well and living in a nearby mining town.
So, the pair with their boss's permission head off to see if Beth is correct. Yet, what they find is more than just Ginny Styles and her story is heartbreaking and shocking and sends Beth and Dax on a search for a paedophile ring that spans the globe.
However, mistakes are made and Ginny's husband/captor and another man are warned the FBI are on the warpath and so they escape kidnapping another girl in the process.
Which makes Beth and Dax, even more, determined to stop them.
But to do that they are going to need help. Especially as the ringleader is determined to stop them by any means necessary.
And with twists and turns, danger and suspense. This was a cracking read. That heart wrenchingly delves into the world of paedophilia, abuse and child slavery, and at times I found it hard to read. But I also couldn't put it down and I have to say this is my favourite of the series so far. And I can't wait for what happens next.
I would happily recommend this series to all. But please be aware abuse, child slavery, and paedophilia are a big feature of this storyline and maybe difficult for some to read. 😊
My thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an early copy of Forgotten Girls. 😊
This series is quickly becoming one of my favorites. Special Agent Beth Katz has done something that her partner, Dax Styles, never believed would happen. She thinks she has found his missing sister. Ginny has been missing for more than two decades. When they arrive at the home, Dax knows he has found Ginny, but she is not the same little girl that she was when he last saw her. She is beyond traumatized. They soon realize they have stumbled upon something extremely disgusting and unsettling. It is a trafficking ring. They are not quite prepared for the depth of this organization as they now have a target on their backs, but this will not deter Beth, Dax and the experts from Black Rock Falls from digging in their heels to fight back. They are determined to break up this ring of depraved individuals forever.
The suspense was insane, as the bad guys seemed to be one step ahead. This will just spur Beth on even more. She is always laser-focused on the case, and is a die hard justice seeker. Her mission is to stamp out depravity by whatever means necessary. Prepare yourself to read into the wee hours of the night, because you will keep promising yourself "just one more chapter". I got so invested in this book that I wanted to jump into the book and help them out. Even though the subject matter is dark, D. K. Hood does not go into detail about what is going on, as she allows the reader to read between the lines.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The fourth book in the Beth Katz series and wow what a doozy was this book. This series is about special agents in the FBI and of course it is one of the best series I have had the pleasure to read.
Beth is a genius whhenn it comes to her abilities with computers as well as being a person who can just kick ass.
With this book you baee a lot of interesting concepts and then fact that you get to see more of the past of Styles. Her bosses background is very interesting.
The book deals with a lot of triggering items so this is a warning that if you get triggered easily do not read you will regret it.
I enjoyed the story very much and with what I have seen there isn't a topic that this author won't touch. What she does is show the proper respect to every topic that she covers which makes me love her work even more.
It makes you feel good when you see a somewhat happy ending to the book however I am dying for many more books on Beth Katz.
I really appreciate the psychological aspects of this book as it really makes you think about victims of kidnapping and assault whether it's physical or sexual.
For me this shows such a great ability in writing that you can add this touch in where you see the psychology as well as the crime, it makes it feel more special.
