Ukeme Awakessien Jeter is a trailblazing executive with a distinguished background in law, business, and engineering. She has made history as the first person of color elected to the Upper Arlington City Council, and her insights into leadership are both profound and actionable. Born in Nigeria and now residing in Upper Arlington, Ohio, with her two children, Jeter embodies the blend of resilience, adaptability, and global perspective that she champions in her book.

"Immigrit" serves as a comprehensive roadmap for developing immigrant leaders within organizations. This disparity highlights the underutilization of a vast pool of human potential.

The book debunks the myth that immigrants lack the necessary skills and expertise to become effective leaders. Jeter points out that immigrants possess a unique blend of grit, adaptability, resourcefulness, and resilience, combined with their global perspectives and diverse experiences, making them exceptionally qualified for leadership roles. In ImmiGRIT, Ukeme Awakessien Jeter expertly explores the intertwined themes of immigration and leadership, crafting an insightful narrative on the unique advantages that immigrant leaders bring to the table. Unlike many works that treat these subjects separately, Jeter merges them, revealing how the immigrant experience can significantly enhance leadership qualities. This book serves not only as a tribute to immigrant resilience and innovation but also as a practical guide for business leaders aiming to harness the full potential of immigrant talent. The book opens with a historical perspective on immigration, highlighting its profound impact on societal and economic development. From the British settler John Rolfe in the 1600s to modern tech giants like Sergey Brin of Google and Eric Yuan of Zoom, Jeter illustrates how immigrants have been pivotal in shaping industries and driving innovation. These narratives are not merely historical footnotes but powerful reminders of the ongoing contributions of immigrants to the global economy. "Powerful" aptly describes this book.

Jeter also offers a personal perspective from her time as an international student, providing a timeline of her immigrant experience up to her becoming a lawyer and beyond. Her story is a poignant exploration of resilience, adaptability, and determination—qualities that many immigrants embody and that are critical attributes of effective leadership. This personal journey culminates in a compelling argument for the indispensable role of immigrant leaders in today’s globalized society.

Human resource professionals, talent developers, and diversity, equity, and inclusion advocates will find ImmiGRIT to be a treasure trove of insights. Jeter outlines practical tips and real-life examples to create a roadmap for maximizing the benefits of a diverse workforce. Her work is a call to action, inspiring efforts to support immigrant talent, address biases, and facilitate inclusivity in the workplace. One of the most notable aspects of this book is the author’s bravery. Jeter courageously challenges existing leadership paradigms and advocates for a new approach that recognizes and nurtures the unique strengths of immigrant leaders. Her no-holds-barred approach aims to transform how we perceive and cultivate leadership in the modern workplace.

Ukeme Awakessien Jeter's eloquent and groundbreaking discussion of the immense value of immigrant leadership is a must-read. Her analysis is well-informed, enriched with storytelling, and highly persuasive. This book is both essential and inspiring.

"ImmiGRIT: How Immigrant Leadership Drives Business Success" by Ukeme Awakessien Jeter offers an insightful exploration into the significant contributions of immigrant leaders to the business world. The author, leveraging their own experiences and extensive research, provides a comprehensive analysis of how immigrants' unique perspectives and tenacity contribute to their success in various industries.

One of the strengths of "ImmiGRIT" is its focus on personal stories and case studies that illustrate the diverse paths and challenges faced by immigrant leaders. These narratives are compelling and highlight the resilience and innovation that immigrants bring to the business arena. Jeter's writing is clear and engaging, making complex concepts accessible to a broad audience.

The book delves into key themes such as adaptability, cultural diversity, and the ability to navigate through adversity—qualities that often define successful immigrant leaders. Jeter effectively argues that these traits not only benefit the individuals but also enrich the companies and industries they are a part of. The author’s insights into the intersection of culture and leadership provide valuable takeaways for both aspiring leaders and established professionals.

However, the book occasionally suffers from a lack of depth in its analysis. While the anecdotes and case studies are interesting, some readers might find themselves wanting more detailed exploration of the broader economic and social impacts of immigrant leadership. Additionally, the book's structure can feel somewhat repetitive, as certain themes are revisited multiple times without offering new perspectives.

Another area where "ImmiGRIT" could improve is in providing more actionable advice for readers. While the inspirational stories are motivating, practical strategies and tools for leveraging the strengths of immigrant leadership in business settings are less prominent.

Overall, "ImmiGRIT: How Immigrant Leadership Drives Business Success" is a thought-provoking and engaging read that shines a light on the important role immigrants play in the business world. While it may leave some readers wishing for a deeper dive into certain topics, it succeeds in celebrating the contributions of immigrant leaders and offers valuable insights into the qualities that drive their success. This book is a worthwhile read for anyone interested in leadership, diversity, and the dynamics of business success.

IMMIGrit is a thoughtful and timely contribution to conversations about diversity, leadership, and power in corporate America. Drawing on her lived experience as a Nigerian immigrant with a background spanning engineering, business, and law, Ukeme Awakessian Jeter shines a clear light on immigrants as an often-overlooked group in corporate DEI efforts.

As someone who has participated in—and led—multiple diversity initiatives within corporations, including running an ERG myself, I strongly resonated with Ukeme’s insights. Her framing of immigrant identity as an under-recognized dimension of inclusion parallels my own views on neurodiversity as another area that remains insufficiently understood and supported. In both cases, talent is present—but visibility, sponsorship, and structural understanding lag behind.

Ukeme is especially astute in highlighting the importance of immigrants engaging beyond corporate walls. Her emphasis on involvement in local community organizations, advocacy groups, and political or activist roles is critical. These spaces offer the nuanced cultural and political insight that many immigrants—who often reach middle management—need in order to gain the visibility, credibility, and networks required to advance to the C-suite.

What makes IMMIGrit particularly compelling is that Ukeme practices what she advocates. Her leadership and service as Mayor of Upper Arlington, Ohio, reflect her commitment to using her considerable acumen in service of the broader community. She is a powerful example of an immigrant leader who fully leverages her lived experience—not only to advance herself, but to intentionally lift others alongside her.

This book is both practical and inspiring, and it deserves the attention of corporate leaders, DEI practitioners, and anyone serious about building more inclusive pathways to leadership.

Immigrit is a quick & easy read, but it really packs a punch. Everyone can gain something from this book - I’m not an immigrant nor do I work in a business setting, but I still gained insight and knowledge from reading this that I haven’t found elsewhere. The author does a great job of sharing parts of her personal story while also including research and data. This should be a must read for all of corporate America & beyond.
