Wittmore U Hockey #3

Daring the Defender

Rate this book
There's only one person who would take me in after leaving my fiancé-my brother Axel.

Unfortunately, he's not the one who answered the door on that wintery Valentine's night. That was his best friend and roommate, Reid Wilder. Copper-colored hair, dark eyes, and the number eight tattooed on his bicep.

I should have turned around when he mistook me for a puck bunny and invited me in.

I definitely should have said no to the drink he offered while I waited.

But the biggest mistake I made was climbing into his lap and kissing him.

*

The rest of the campus may think it's pathetic that I spent Valentine's Day alone and not with one of the puck bunnies that love the Wittmore hockey players. But I know better. Valentine's Day is for committed relationships-like the one I just got out of with my ex.

Nah, I'll just stay home, eat my heart-shaped pizza, and grab some half-off candy tomorrow. At least that was my plan until a girl showed up on my doorstep looking for my roommate Axel.

Figuring this was a former hook-up, I tried to shoo her off, but she was persistent.

And cute.

Axel's got a girlfriend now. I figure why not mend my broken heart with the girl Cupid dropped off at my doorstep? So I kiss her.

Not just a kiss, I realize. Her first kiss.

And when her overprotective brother finds out?

It'll probably be my last.

3rd book installment Shelby & Reid are the perfect match equally balancing out each others strengths and weaknesses and desires!

The good boy and inexperienced girl trope was unexpectedly delightful, their banter, the dirty talk, the more you read the more you learn why Shelby is considered so naive and how she wants the normal life experiences girls of her age have, Reid known for always the family guy, good head on his shoulders does what he’s told, their relationship I fear is my favorite so far!

Reid can sweep me off my feet anytime!

Can’t wait for book 4!

It was alright… I was hoping for more romance especially since the h was so sheltered.

Both MCs were likable, just not fully developed. The issue with the parents was unfinished.

Another amazing book in the Wittmore U series!!

Shelby is Axel's younger, innocent sister, who finds herself in a compromising position with the hot defenseman.

I freaking love Reid!! Hes all about being a gentleman, meeting Shelby's needs while also being filthy talking 🥵

I love this series!!!

Plot/Storyline : ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Spice : 🌶️🌶️.5
Editing (grammar, typos, etc.) : ✏️✏️✏️✏️.75

GET READY FOR REID WILDER - THE IDEAL BOYFRIEND!

Where do I even start with this delightful book?!

First off, the Wittmore U Hockey series just continues to get better and better and Daring the Defender is proof of that.

This M/F, contemporary, hockey-adjacent, slow burn romance book follows the story of Reid Wilder, a defenseman on the Wittmore Badgers hockey team and Shelby Rakestraw, younger sister of Axel Rakestraw who is the Badgers’ elite goalie making her completely off-limits.

This book will have you cheering for the demise of a relationship while an undefinable one takes place. I really enjoyed how Angel wrote about innocence (naïveté) along with expectations based on social constructs that you may not have agreed to just because you adhere to a particular belief (lifestyle).

And the interactions (banter) between all the beloved characters of the Wittmore U universe is fantastic! We get more Nadia and Twyler, along with Axel and Reese and we get a smidge more insight on Jefferson. SO MANY squeal worthy moments are packed in this story, it’s definitely not one to miss.

Naturally, this is a slow-burn as the FMC is a virgin and therefore plenty of build up to the apex moment as we move along the storyline but the tension between her and Reid is delicious and drool worthy. We STAN a man who believes in consent and free-will in this house. I love how respectful and considerate Reid is with Shelby as well given her parameters and her views on intimacy.

If you have a good girl kink, this book will satisfy that part of you.

If you enjoy a “big boy” who is fit and knows how to handle his woman, this book is for you.

Camaraderie and profound connections are the theme and you can never go wrong when that’s prevalent.

I was graciously afforded the opportunity to BETA read this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I knew exactly who this book was going to be about by the end of the last one and it did NOT disappoint. Idk what’s in this series but I’ve been devouring them for 3 straight days and absolutely loving it. Reid and Shelby’s story was so heartwarming, I loved their growth both together and individually. And who doesn’t love a pissed off brother for comedic relief. Also, I don’t think I’ll ever get over the feral causing “you’re wearing my jersey” line. Like sign me up to read that line for the rest of my life and I’ll be content.

Overall, another LOVE! Another feet kicking, face fanning, tear wiping hockey romance under the belt. I’ll be counting down to the last one.

“you really need to stop looking at me like that, or you’re getting bent over.”

~ arc review

this book we get shelby (axel’s naive little sister) and reid (forever doomed to be the goodest boy) and omg it worked SO WELL and the chemistry and romance is insane!

i was afraid that it’d get annoyed with shelby for being so inexperienced with life in general but that wasn’t the case — i think it was written in a way that made you sympathize with her because she was discovering all of these new things and pushing her boundaries to explore even though she was scared.

reid i fear may be one of my favorites mmcs to date 😩 he’s just SO precious! he’s respectful and a gentleman but he’s also a little horny rebel and a dirty talker 💓 he’s also a family man and jusy so reliable in every sense of the word. what more do u want ho?

overall, i feel like this gem had a great flow — the story sucks you in and makes you enjoy every part of the couple’s journey! i was giddy, happy and swoooning in so many moments throughout the book.

5/5 for me.

This is my favorite of the series. Reid has deserved someone who loved him and cherished him from when we first meet him and his story was so perfect.

Reid has been in a toxic on and off again relationship with Darla since we are introduced to everyone in Faking it with the Forward. It’s clear he likes her way more than she likes him but Reid just wants someone to love and he thought he saw their future so clear, until she dumps him. He loves hockey but he has other things he loves to. And other goals and that includes someone to share them with. He doesn’t want to make the same mistakes again so he’s been taking a break from monogamy.

We meet Shelby in Guarded by the Goalie. She is Axels sister and they are the children of a reverend in a Texas mega church. Shelby has been sheltered and told what to do, who to be, and when to do it since she could walk. She is promised to a ministers son and she’s starting to feel the pressure and it’s suffocating her. She can’t be who her parents expect her to be. She starts to think maybe she needs just a minute to process so she turns to the one person who has successfully rebelled against their family, Axel. That’s where she meets Reid.

Reid is unexpected and fun and shows her there’s more to life than she ever knew. He shows her it’s okay to be more than the housewife she’s expected to be. Shelby shows Reid that he is needed. He is good enough, in fact he’s her other half.

So that was hot. Wow I love a first time story line and this book didn’t disappoint. I loved the details in Reid’s life and in how he took care with Shelby. Shelby was shy but brave and was willing to take what she wanted if not being a little embarrassed. They both learned to open up and that with great communication you can’t have it all!

I didn’t like that they made it seem like she was so innocent and made we’re gonna pray on her, kinda creepy. Also I just hate twler now she sucks and is so backhanded to the other girls. It got a little boring I feel it needed a bit more action.

ARC reader review. No Spoliers!!

Wittmore University just keeps getting better. Axel and Shelby’s (siblings) backstory got me intrigued in the second book of this series (Guarded by the goalie) and this book delivered the right amount of drama that is expected. I’m always a sucker for the brothers best friend trope, and I’m definitely swooning at the ‘good girl’ line every time. Watching Reid and Shelby get comfortable with eachother and grow together was incredible.

Definitely give this series a shot. It’s a series of standalones however I highly recommend reading the first two books just to get the backstory and characters straight. I absolutely cannot wait for the next book! 💙

Daring The Defender by Angel Lawson is book 3 in her Wittmore U Hockey Series. This book is told from andual POV, following Shelby Rakestraw and Reid Wilder. Shelby is Axels little sister who runs away from home after being overwhelmed with her engagement. Shelby is the good daughter of the pastor of a mega church and is expected to marry who her mother and father expect her to. She decides she needs a break from everyone planning her life and runs to the only other person who would understand what she is going through, her big brother Axel, who happens to be the Wittmore Badgers goalie. Reid is Axel’s best friend and defenceman on the Wittmore Badgers hockey team. Reid is the perfect book boyfriend. I absolutely loved and devoured everything in this book. It was so well written. The characters and the banter were perfection. I can't wait for book 4 of the series. I have loved each one a little more than the last.

Who is this girl? Where did she come from? Is she some sexy, video-playing, Valentine's gift sent to my doorstep from Cupid?

I want to kiss her. I’m thinking about kissing her. Yep. I’m going to kiss her. Fuck, I don’t even know her name.

“Shelby was the only role fit for her–an angel.” “Always the good girl, huh?” Reid says, looking me up and down. “Seems right.” My cheeks burn at the way he says ‘good girl,’ because it doesn't sound sweet at all. My brother must agree because there’s a hard jerk under the table and Reid flinches, cursing under his breath.

Reid turns around showing the back of his jersey. His name, Wilder, stitched above the number 08. “It took eight homes.” Turning back he adds, “When I got to Wittmore I was able to request a number. I asked for eight. I didn’t want to forget those days, but I also wanted it as a reminder of how much I went through to get somewhere safe and stable. To find the right team.”

It’s in that moment, when Reid is revealing himself for the kids, his teammates and me that I realize what that feeling is. Love. I’m in love with Reid Wilder.

I received an advance review copy, and I am leaving my honest review voluntarily.

I think this is my favorite book in this series so far! Shelby and Reid really were something special and I loved every second of it!! I laughed, got teary eyed and never wanted this book to end. Religion is not something that I'm usually into reading but this was done so well! You could really feel that instant connection between Shelby and Reid and that made such a difference. I'm so excited to continue this series, I found Angel Lawson by chance one day and really have not been disappointed with this series.

This book does not disappoint!! I can’t even imagine what Shelby has gone through and how she was living her life before meeting Reid. They really are perfect for each other!

┈ MY THOUGHTS ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈
- There were some really fun tropes in this one!
- Reid was such a sweetheart from the very beginning. Out of all of the guys who live at the Manor, Reid is by far the most gentlehearted one. His rough start to life, growing up in the foster system, gave him a unique outlook on life. He plays it safe with money and his future, shows his individuality through fashion and design, and wants more than anything to have a stable partner and future.
- Shelby's character development: Shelby experiences major growth throughout this book! In the beginning, she is heavily sheltered by her parents' world and idealisms. After experiencing life for the first time without their claws in her, she is finally able to have the life of a normal young adult.
- Found Family: Thanks to all of the main characters from this series living together (between two houses), there are major family vibes coming from this group. They are extremely close to one another and have each other's backs when they're going through shit. I enjoyed all of the cameos of the MCs from the first two books.
- The chemistry between Reid and Shelby was 🔥💥🎆
- I absolutely loved the ending! I do, however, wish we would've gotten more of a glimpse into their future, but I'm sure we'll see more of them in the next book.
- Overall: Another great read by Angel Lawson!! I love how she can go from one extremely chaotic series to another (less chaotic) sports romance series! She is one of my favorite authors at this point, and I will read anything she gifts us with.

Nadia was done so dirty! I fell in love with her and the growth her character had in her book. Her and Axel had such a great ending and then how they both got portrayed in this book was just terrible.

I didn’t fall in love with this couple. They seemed very underdeveloped. Her nickname (GG: good girl) was not it.

virgin heroine
beta hero -- except on the ice
brother's best friend
consent is king

I know that I will likely take heat for this, as the whole series is really not that accurate in terms of the hockey draft, but I don't care. Axel and Nadia are one of my favorite couples of all time, and the entire Wittmore U hockey team is purse catnip.

This story continues right where Axel and Nadia leave off: the boys are edging toward the playoffs and the end of their senior year. Everyone's getting ready to move on. Nadia's dealing with the Brent/CJ situation...

And Axel's little sister realizes her entire life is being planned for her. She runs away and gets on a plane, hoping for a breather to give her a little time to come to grips with her father and mother planning her whole life. Obviously, she heads to her older brother's house.

There, she meets Reid. He's the fashionista who has an on again- off again relationship with Darla that we've learned about in the first two books. They've called it off for good, and he's home alone on Valentine's Day. Shelby shows up. He doesn't know who she is, but there ends up being a kiss...and Axel loses his mind.

Bro code is invoked. Shelby is off limits.

Yeah...you know the rest.

The best part of this story, besides how hot this author makes consent, is how the growth of the main two characters happens. It's a fairly quick timeline, which can seem unrealistic. But she does a great job of showing Shelby's internal conflict and handling of Reid's demons as well. Both H and h are open with each other and give each other space, which I love.

What clinched this book as a 5 star favorite for me is the surprise unveiling of Reid's number's meaning. It's absolutely a pivotal moment and I honestly was in tears.

There are grand gestures that aren't grand because Shelby saves herself. There are earnest conversations. There are real questions about what comes next.... it's all done well.

I'll also say that I generally skip bonus content because I don't need anymore freaking newsletters. I hit "send" on this one, though and I am SO GLAD I DID. It definitely rounds out what comes next for all of the couples and tees up the next book. SO GOOD.

Future Stacey: definitely a re-read.

This book is as if the body was missing its large intestines (ShelbyxReid), yet kept the small intestines. I liked the trope , and it was different to read about innocent as in sheltered in christ. Interesting to go around that without taking advantage of the girl adn looking like the bad guy. So good job on that becasue it was well executed. ALTHOUGH it was so damn bland. Like the characters were missing something , the plot was missing something. Matter fact, what was the plot?? Denial?? alr bro. ok so lets recap. Shelby (btw all the characters in this series have the worst names , EVER( like whoever naemd their kid these names must hate them)) Anyway, Shelby goes to her brother college house ( that he shares with 4 boys) on valentines day and Reid answers the door, they hang out for a bit then she randomly jumps his bones ( comepltely out of her character, considering she has never kissed anyone and didnt even know his name). Her brother eventually comes in the house and beats up Ried for kissing his sister. Their chill for a while. Shelby explores their college lifestyle, trying to escape the marriage that was set up and constantly planned by her parents . Which i get , she had no backbone and they walked all over her , as if it wasnt her wedding. What dad picks out your wedding ring... thats so weird, id leave too. anyway she starts hooking up with Reid becasue like who wouldnt , next thing you know she has to go back to texas to clear the situation and break it off with David (who was FLAVORLESS , and had less lines then the dad and mom combinded...) Like they could have added a personality to any of these characters to make a good story , but chose to be LAZY and didnt really evolve the plot any more then needed. Im not saying that they all have to be complex or anything, but the information we know is the same as a parasocial realationship. This book was a cute refresher of my reading pallet, but i garentee i wont remeber this book a week from now. i didnt hate it so i wont do 2 stars , but it didnt stand out to me ( not a diamond in the rough ) so its just gonna have to stick to a 3 stars.

Shelby has always been the good girl, followed the rules, did everything expected of her and even became engaged to a guy her parents picked out for her. She has no choices in anything and while it bothered her, it finally was the last straw when everyone excluded her in planning her wedding, building a house and even planning her family. She realized that if she didn’t stop the ride that had become her life, this would become her worst nightmare. Needing some space, she bails and runs away to her brother to rethink things and get some perspective. What she didn’t expect was to be instantly attracted to her brother’s best friend and roommate Reid when he opened the door to her on Valentine’s Day thinking she was some random “puck bunny” trying to get with Axel. He had no idea who she was and that was refreshing for her but also eye opening as she could see he was attracted too.
OMG, I love Reid so much and how he has wanted a relationship and not just some fling but determined to focus on hockey until some random girl shows up looking for his roommate and one of his best friends Axel on Valentine’s Day. He thinks she is cute and kisses her only to find out that its Axel’s sheltered baby sister Shelby and it’s her first kiss. He vows to stay away from her, but she just draws him in and he wants to be her first everything.
Cherry on top is that Reid lets Shelby determine everything in the relationship from her experimenting, finding her own identity and how far she wants to take things. I love that he forces her to verbally consent to things but also forces her to say what she wants since she has never gotten to do that before. Shelby builds more confidence and I love seeing how they both grow throughout the story. They are my favorite couple in the Wittmore U series but I love them all and how Angel Lawson makes you want to hang out with them at the bar with how realistic her characters are.

I received an ARC of this from the author, this review is entirely of my own volition!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5 stars
🌶️🌶️/5

This book went down by .5 because of the first kiss Shelby and Reid share considering at the time Shelby is still with David. That being said I was rooting for the downfall of their relationship whilst cheering for the rise of Reid and Shelby!

HOWEVER, I adore this book, Reid being the most goodest lad ever and Shelby being the innocent (naïve) good girl who is dealing with the pressures of her home life.

Now listen, listen the slow burn of this book had me screaming at times because it was so beautifully frustrating at times. Shelby being Axel’s younger sister means she’s TOTALLY off limits to his team, which obviously means it makes Reid want her all the more!!! I love this paring it really scratched that good girl, forbidden love, brothers best friend itch for me.

Seeing how Shelby and Reid’s relationship grows is honestly heartwarming. For example when Reid takes her shopping for warmer clothes was actually so cute! Also Shelby learning language she isn’t used to and experiencing things she usually wouldn’t (like bars) was an interesting thing to read. We’re usually so used to FMC’s kind of already knowing how the world works that it was nice to see this change up. Even if it was also heart wrenching at times seeing Shelby realise that she’s never made a decision for herself before this get away.

We also get to see more of Twyler, Nadia, Reese and of course Axel. As well as getting a little more insight into Jefferson!

As someone who usually reads darker romance, this is a perfect switch up for something a lighter and definitely more on the contemporary side! Would definitely recommend! All in all a really sweet book and I can’t wait to see how this series gets even better in the next book! This series hasn’t missed yet and I don’t think it will!

REEEIDDDDDDDDDD. WOW lol. I loved him in the other books but his own book? Made me love him even more!!! He’s just the sweetest thing!

“Whatever happens, Shelby Rakestraw, I want you to know that I love you. I want the best for you, even if it’s two-thousand miles away.” -Reid 🥹

Such a great forbidden romance, brother’s best friend book! The book follows good girl Shelby (GG) who basically runs to her brother after her religious parents who promised her to her boyfriend in the church. We also have Reid who’s Shelby brother (Axel) best friend & on the same hockey team as him who just got out of a relationship with his longtime girlfriend that he thought he would marry. After Shelby show up on their doorsteps both of their lives turn upside down, but let’s just say in a good way!

Since Shelby feels so left out being in whittmore because she was sheltered, Reid promises to help her live her best life. He takes her shopping to get clothes she likes, he gives her space to feel comfortable with everything she likes, he makes her feel seen & doesn’t judge her for what she decides to do ( A MAN!)
“I thought I was the one teaching Shelby how to experience a bigger life, while she taught me that sometimes the best things in life just show up at your door. You just have to let them inside.”

Even with the sneaking around & lying I enjoyed Shelby & Reid getting to know little details about each other. In each of their lives they were considered the “good person”. Shelby because she did everything her parents told her & Reid because he was always a nice guy. They related in so many ways it was precious. Reid gave Shelby the space to do whatever she wanted & encouraged her along the way.

This was definetly my favorite in the series so far! Waiting on Jefferson’s book next but Shelby & Reid officially have a place in my heart now 🥹.

Quotes:

“You showed me parts of a life that had always been either out of my reach, or I was taught to feel ashamed of. You helped me trust in myself, and know what it was like to truly be wanted.” -Reid 🥹

“I won’t beg another girl to stay if it’s not the right fit.” His jaw locks tight. “You taught me that I’m better than that.” -Reid 😭

“Yeah, you make me a lot of things, GG. Excited is only one of them.” -Reid 🤭

Wild for Wilder

💜 Daring The Defender 💜 (Book 3 in the Wittmore U series) by Angel Lawson

𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰:

💜 Reid Wilder has me feeling some type of way - and I’m not even mad about it. After being built up so high from even book 1, reading his story was hands-down the most exciting experience I've had with this series - and that’s saying a LOT, because this series is nothing short of epic.

💜 I’m a sucker for angst. That push and pull, that simmering tension where you can’t decide who’s going to give in first - it’s like an addiction.

And let me tell you, this book hooked me from
the first page and didn’t let go. Every moment had me on the edge of my seat, breathless, wondering how Shelby and Reid could possibly navigate the mess of emotions they were tangled in. The way their connection unfolded was a perfect storm, and it hit me right in the heart. So much so that my heart was in my throat for most of this book.

💜 Shelby? She was a force of nature. A quiet hurricane, unaware of her own power - until she stormed into Reid’s life, and suddenly, everything she thought she knew about herself was turned upside down.

I loved how she maintained her core, her essence, but became so much more. She wasn’t just the "naive good girl" anymore; she proved to everyone (and to herself) that she could, and would, be so much more - if only for herself.

💜 This book was an absolute ride. I didn’t just want to finish it - I wanted to stay immersed in this world forever. I craved more of Shelby, more of Reid, more of this beautifully crafted universe.

💜 It was gripping, emotional, and downright unforgettable. I can honestly say I loved every single moment of it, and I would read it all over again in a heartbeat.

I went into this book almost blind. I saw a paragraph advertised on Facebook, that caught my attention so decided to read it without finding out what the book is about.
Shelby and Reid were both very likable characters.
It was nice watching Shelby grow and take control of her life.
I feel like they feel for each other way to fast, especially Reid who was heartbroken over his ex majority of the book.
The timeline of this book is about a month including the epilogue.
I wish the epilogue was further more into the future rather than day or two. It would have been nice to see what Shelby did. Did she go to college, follow Reid to New York, etc?
I don’t really like Nadia at all. She is a self proclaimed Jersey chaser, kinda confused why Axel would have given her a chance knowing she only likes him due to her trying to become a wag. Also I found it weird when she and Shelby were in the garage, and she told Shelby that’s where Axel(Shelby’s brother) made his first move on her. Weird thing to tell your boyfriend’s sister.
I think I’ll go read her and Axel’s story to see how they came about.
Axel got on my nerves, wanted more for his sister other than to be controlled by their parents and religion but practically pushed her to go back to her parents. Then made a comments how he would send back on the first place, I.e if she was seeing Reid.

Also for someone brought up with purity culture shoved down their throat, she quickly forgot about that. There was zero struggle with that in the book. Axel made a comment how just after the kiss, Shelby will be struggling with “sinnjng” but Shelby never did.

This is an MF romance and is book three of the Wittmore U Hockey series. These books can be read as standalones but are best enjoyed in order so you get the most from the world. This was a 5 star, 3 spice read for me! I’m obsessed with this series. If you’re in a slump or you just enjoy reading about MMCs who worship their partners…here you go! Angel was even kind enough to throw us a book bone since the next book in the series won’t be out until Fall 2025. You will not be disappointed! Tropes include: college hockey romance, secret relationship he falls first, brother’s best friend/teammate, forbidden, experienced MMC x v!rg!n FMC, “good girl”, open door spice, protective MMC, dual POV, HEA.

Shelby (FMC) has reached her boiling point. Her family has controlled her life…always. She was willing to get married, but where does the control end? So, she run. She goes to the only place or person who feels safe, the way hom should feel – her brother. Sure, she’ll be staying in a house with four hockey players. Being a modest woman who has little to no real-world experience, well, she’s in for an experience. Although, nothing could prepare her for the man who answered the door.

Reid (MMC) has no idea who this woman standing on his porch is, and he isn’t really in the mood after his millionth break-up with this ex. Whey does she want to see Axel? He’s spoken for now. He’ll find out soon enough when his teammate walks in to find them in a compromising position that earns him a lot of heat (in more ways than one). He knows she’s off-limits, but he can’t help himself. He wants to be the one to show her what life is all about. Will she let him?

Shelby Rakestraw is Axel's little sister, you know Wittmore U’s goalie. The one who has always followed all the rules of the Kingdom. It's not the kingdom of a castle, no, but one of the evangelical kind. Their father is a minister, a crooked minister who thought he could wield his power over his children, even into their twenties. Axel made sure to let them know he wasn’t going to comply with their way of life or adhere to any more of their commands. Their parents went full throttle on Shelby.

By doing so, they did it in such a way that they gave her no choices whatsoever in any part of her engagement. She had no say in the party, the wedding plans, their future home, or the number of children they would have. Shelby’s knew she could do it. She was fond of David but wasn’t in love with him. So in the middle of the night, she packs a bag and heads to the airport with a ticket to end up at Axel’s place, and the only one home is Reid. Reese and Axel are out with Twyler and Nadia are out for Valentine’s Day.

Jefferson is out at the frat house. Reid and Shelby start playing a hockey video game, and she is a worthy opponent. The next thing he knows she is straddling him and kissing him. The door burst open and the gang all walked in Axel registered what he just registered what was going on. When it hits Reid why does Shelby look so familiar? When he feels a punch clock him on the lip. He gets it he has sisters. She and Axel talk, and he calls their parents, so they don't worry and buys her several weeks.

He tells her she needs to figure her sh-t out. Well, she does, and what a lovely ride it is to the next phase of their life.
