Alexandra has never been what you'd call normal. Plagued by nightmares and a strange ability to sense impending death her life has been confusing at best, hell at worst. Unsure where her abilities come from or even what her purpose is, Alexandra finds herself at a loss. But after a near-death experience with a mysterious stranger she finds herself suddenly thrust into a world that might finally provide her with answers and a purpose... If she survives long enough to find them.
Soulless by Cassidy Cheyenne grips the reader by the throat from its opening—a descent into darkness reminiscent of Dante’s Inferno. The story plunges into a massacre painted in vivid crimson, where Alexandra’s innocence starkly contrasts with the grotesque horrors around her. This harrowing introduction sets the tone for an emotional and existential journey that lingers long after the final page.
Alexandra’s tale is steeped in dualities: innocence and corruption, survival and destruction, prophecy and choice. The recurring crimson imagery symbolizes both the loss of innocence and the unyielding cycle of life and death. Much like Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein examines humanity’s fragility, Cheyenne’s narrative delves into the delicate balance between creation and annihilation, elevating the story beyond conventional survival horror.
Cheyenne masterfully balances moments of shocking intensity with quieter glimpses into Alexandra’s everyday life—banter with friends and fleeting moments of normalcy. These respites heighten the sense of unease as the encroaching darkness looms ever larger. The seamless interplay of grounded humanity and supernatural terror hooks readers emotionally and intellectually, encouraging reflection even as it horrifies.
One of the most striking moments early in the story is Alexandra’s accidental siphoning of life energy, mirroring Lost Girl Bo's survival through her succubus abilities. This act blurs the line between morality and necessity, forcing Alexandra—and the reader—to grapple with the cost of survival. It’s a haunting exploration of how self-preservation can come at a devastating price, adding depth and complexity to her character.
More than a story of survival, Soulless excels in building a rich, symbolic foundation. Cassidy Cheyenne challenges readers to confront their deepest fears, blending tension and inner conflict that captivates throughout.
This is a book that not only exceeds Abi’s Chapter One Challenge but also demands to be experienced, dissected, and discussed. But don’t just take my word for it. Dive into Soulless and see for yourself. Form your own opinion, share your thoughts, and leave a review.
Heart pounding from the very beginning to the end. Kept me guessing and wanting more! Tears of sadness and Joy! Left me on the edge of my seat wanting more. Can’t wait for the next book!
I was presented with the opportunity to discover this book through social media. I typically don't get into and read young adult books. I'm more of a spicy/smut girl type. I know....I'm sorry I'm broken lol 😅
That being said, I would definitely rate this book 3.5 to 4 stars! Again, I don't even try and read Young Adult (YA) books because I know I just won't be able to finish them. I LOVED this book. 3.5 to 4 stars is a high rating for me. I'm a bit of book snob, even though I don't try to be. The author had such an amazing, original idea with this book and ran with it!! I've read hundreds of vampire and religious lore novels. None that combined the two into such an intriguing and unique way! Well done!!
I used to read books all the time when I was younger but lost interest as I got older, this book got me interested in reading again. I read it whenever I had free time and it kept me hooked from start to finish. Curious to see what follows.
