Of all the people in the world, why her?

It was supposed to be easy: find the drug maker. Find her, and drag her back to the dragons to deal with. She deserves death for what she's done.

For someone like Weston, the best alpha in the world, the one who shuts people up just by walking in the room, it would've been.

Until he learns what she is…

Finding a fated mate is nearly impossible. Very few are able to do it. But the call of their bond is unmistakable. Against all odds, and in the worst situation imaginable, he's found his true mate. Her.

Worse? If there could be anything worse than a true mate that has brought the world to its knees - she doesn't seem to realize what she is. Her animal is suppressed. Locked away, leaving her nearly without magic. She doesn't know what the feeling is, and she doesn't care. She claims innocence. She thinks he's the villain in this story, and she aims to kill him before he destroys her.

It doesn't change his duty. He must bring her in, nature be damned. Regardless of how much it hurts, he'll resist the sweet taste of her lips and the heaven between her thighs. She must pay for what she's done.

He just hopes he doesn't die inside for the part he's forced to play in the destruction of his true mate.

This is a dark and very spicy Red Riding Hood retelling in the Ruin World featuring an anti-hero, a strong heroine, and a humorous supporting cast. It is not necessary to have read the Ruin series to enjoy this installment.

Breene should get her own category—spicy, deadpan fantasy. This was such a witty and wild (red) ride(ing hood retelling).

“Welcome to the debauchery, my darling. We’re going to have a whole lot of fun.”

When you’re in the mood to read something spicy, do yourself a favor and pick up this book. K.F. Breene cranks up the heat starting in chapter 2, and it only gets hotter from there. Plus, wolf shifters = knotting scenes that will make you wish you were born a werewolf. 😏🔥

This book has everything you want in a fantasy romance…
🧠 Aurelia: endearing and intelligent female lead who is the brains behind an illicit drug empire
🐺 Weston: silent and broody alpha wolf who was tasked to bring down said drug empire (enter my favorite trope - forced proximity)
👮‍♀️ Hadriel: freaking hilarious bestie/jailer who is always down to experiment with hallucinogens
👵 Granny: is she a sweet and sour grandmotherly figure to Aurelia, or is she an evil overlady set to make addicts out of the kingdom’s population? Maybe both?
⛰️ Beware of the cliffhanger. There’s a twist no one saw coming, and it’s going to make you want to scream at everyone involved.

I devoured this book and am now among the masses who are desperately awaiting the conclusion to this duology.

Disclaimer: you don’t need to read the Deliciously Dark Fairytales series before diving into this book. There are references to characters in that series, but you don’t miss anything by skipping it and jumping straight to Weston and Aurelia’s story.

Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ (5/5)

dnf 37% I can see I’m going to be an outlier here! 🚀 but I kept getting more disenchanted with this as the book went on, it’ felt like a copy paste of all the fantasmut out there:
-Extreme size difference
-her nickname:little blank (wolf)
-painful/pleasure sex
-fated mates body betrayal
-3 sex encounters in first 18 or so hrs
-trotted out Hadriel again with dick patterned clothing and same “shamefucking” jokes. Was funny the first time in main series, not the 20th go around.
-everyone’s eyes ‘hooding’ left and right
-abused and downtrodden FMC

If this is what you’re looking for might be for you. I found it repetitive and unimaginative.

HO-LY SMOKES! 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

A Cage of Crimson is the first book in a 2-book spinoff series in the Deliciously Dark Fairytales world (starts with A Ruin of Roses; not necessary to read before this, but is also excellent). This is a spicy red riding hood retelling told from multiple points of view.

In ACOC we follow Weston, the alpha wolf on a mission to bring down Granny’s drug operation, and Aurelia, the drug maker. Our favorite mediocre maid, Hadriel, is also along for the ride, bringing his special brand of hilarity and colorfulness with him. Weston and Aurelia are enemies, but, in a twist of fate, are also true mates. We follow along as Weston and his pack raid Aurelia’s village. The pack takes her prisoner with the intention of delivering her to the dragons for judgement. Aurelia believes she is magicless and is very naive to the world Outside her village. She doesn’t believe she is responsible for the destruction Weston and his pack claim her drugs have caused. Will she be proven right or will her eyes be opened? Will Weston give in to the true mate bond or will his duty prevail above all else? Will Hadriel’s clothes be covered in hidden dicks?

Once I picked this book up, I didn’t want to put it down! This was a wild ride and I loved every second of it! ACOC is spicy from the beginning; full of action, laughter, tears, light and deep feelings; has strong character and relationship (romantic and platonic) development; ends with a twist that will leave you staring at a wall wondering “WTF” while begging for more. I am very much looking forward to finding out what happens next for Weston and Aurelia!

If you like spicy fairytale retellings, enemies to lovers, enemies to friends, touch her and ☠️ vibes, forced proximity, possessive alphas, knotting, and praise kinks, I HIGHLY recommend reading A Cage of Crimson.

I'm really disappointed in this one, because I genuinely loved the entire Ruin of Roses series. I don't know what happened, but I didn't like the dialogue (felt either too over the top at some points and too similar to the previous series at other points).

The story also went full smut right out of the gate, but that's not my critique. I love a fast-paced smutty book when it's written well. My issue is that it just didn't feel right with the plot, which wasn't pulling me in either :/

Eep! I’m only giving this 3.5 stars. It was good, don’t get me wrong. The plot is interesting…not as interesting as the original series but still a page-turner. Characters were pretty good overall. But that ending was STU.PID.

Aurelia spends the entire book coming to grips with the fact that her life has been a lie, finally accepting it all and fitting in with her new “pack”, only for one small little thing to send her spiraling back down? Girlfriend folded faster than the overnight crew at the Gap. It’s incredibly obvious that this half-assed cliffy was written solely to lure readers in for book 2. Which, look, you gotta sell books and keep us hooked in the series…but don’t be so obvious about it.

Also, did anyone else feel that this is a bit recycled? Didn’t we already have a strong-willed fmc who is obsessed with plants and creating elixirs, kinda the outcast of her village, with a suppressed animal? Didn’t we already have the miscommunication trope, keeping the whole mate thing a secret from the fmc? I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: romantasy is getting a little formulaic. The plot points / tropes have been commoditized, hell even the smut is getting repetitive. Give me something new! Ok I'm done, thanks for coming to my TedTalk.

We got Hadriel, though. Love him - even though his humor started to feel forced and a lil cringey.

Will I return for book 2? To read another installment of Aurelia distrusting everyone around her, and then rebuilding her relationship with Weston only to likely again feel betrayed once the mate secret is revealed? TBD.

6% - I don’t think there’s anything less romantic than being fucked on a dirt path with barely two words exchanged 😑

2/5
One word comes to mind after finishing this book: sex. Because of the number of detailed and long scenes (6), I’d count this as erotica. I mean, at 6% in? Really? There is no such thing as anticipation. As soon as they’re horny, or aroused, BAM! Sex.

Story was okay. Aurelia irritated me and Weston was meh. Book wasn’t very funny and the other characters were meh, all except Hadriel.

And the last bit with Aurelia and Weston doing a 180? 🤦‍♀️ Wtf was that? Seems like a convoluted way to make some angst. Felt like a forced cliff hanger.

There is insta-lust, and then there is this. The main characters had sex the moment they saw each other on a dirth path. Not exactly what I am looking for when reading romance.

You can find this review of A Cage of Crimson on my blog, Heart's Content!

A really big shoutout and thank you to the author for providing me with a complimentary copy!

When I first came across K. F. Breene’s Deliciously Dark Fairytales (DDF) series, I hadn’t realised I’d stumbled upon my next obsession. I couldn’t stop reading long enough to review each of the books and it wasn’t until the whole series had ended that I was able to collect my thoughts and put them to paper to express what I felt.

When Breene first revealed which one of the characters from the DDF series was going to get a duet series of his own, I was overjoyed; because this particular character has had my heart and attention from the first moment he appeared. Long story short, I could not wait to read about Weston, the Wolf Alpha.

If you’ve read the DDF series, then you are well aware of the circumstances, pain and suffering the characters experience in it and A Cage of Crimson (ACoC) will only further delve into and develop on everything we already know; but adding in a fresh perspective and a new set-up. However, Breene promises that this series can be read as a stand-alone and I stand by her statement. You definitely can read ACoC without having read the previous series, but as is always true for every spin-off series, it certainly adds to the experience immensely to read it all together.

When Breene first revealed the basic premise for ACoC, I knew it was a dark Red-Riding Hood retelling. As a reader who has been anticipating this book for nearly a year, it’s rather typical for me to map out an idea of what to expect or see happen in it. What I found interesting was seeing some of my predictions come true and at the same time, some of the events completely blind-side me. The blurb for the book reveals next to nothing about how deep a rabbit-hole the readers are drawn into and I realized that must have been the intention. It worked, really well.

The plot of ACoC has many layers to it. There’s one that can immediately be perceived and understood (for the most part) and there’s one that’s more sinister hidden beneath it. Then, there are several sub-plots whose threads are woven into the story as braids of emotional pain, humour and sparking chemistry that keep a firm hold of your attention and heart. The way that Breene executes the narration and unveiling of the plot creates a lot of mystery, intrigue and emotion in the reader. In her own words, she certainly takes no prisoners and holds every character to their mistake and their virtues.

The blurb suggests that this story is going to pit the main characters against each other, even while they experience a deep-seated yearning within themselves that pulls them towards one another. Breene delivers on that promise with her strong, charming and heart-wrenching writing. I’ve always found Breene’s writing to supersede any wariness I may feel towards any trope or set-up; because she can take the most difficult circumstance and transform it into the perfect stage for her story. I’m infinitely curious to see how she achieves this in this duet given that the book ends at an emotionally charged moment.

I haven’t read Breene’s work outside of this book and its connected series, but from my little experience, her stories are heavily character driven. It’s her characters whose voices, lives, pain and humour draw you in and keep you with them every moment of the way. ACoC is no different. Narrated alternatively by Weston and Aurelia, ACoC delves into the lives and psyches of a Wolf Alpha with power equal to his pain and a small town woman with a horrific present and an equally heartbreaking past. Initially, I wondered why Breene had chosen the structure of a dual perspective for her book, but as I read I realized there was no other way we could possible understand the depth of the struggle and attraction the characters experience for/with one another without being in both their minds.

My favourite thing about the MMC and the FMC is their circumstance and how Breene has executed it. The theme in this book follows the route of “insta-attraction”, a very slippery slope of a trope that’s not easy to wrangle into place. I will agree that ACoC being set in a fantastical land works greatly in its favour; however, how the author sells that storyline is what makes or breaks the connection a reader feels to the characters and the story. Breene found a fantastic way to balance how the primary characters interact in their present and how they learn and share their pasts (both to one another and the readers). I loved watched infallible Weston pit everything he’s built of (and for) himself against both fate and a very strong-headed Aurelia whose filled with more compassion and guts than most.

The secondary characters in Breene’s books hold a special place in all her readers’ hearts and seeing old and new characters that bring much value to ACoC was one of my favourite experiences while reading. I remember Breene once shared the reason explaining why her secondary characters have so much personality and I don’t think it’s something I will ever forget. She has truly turned that moment she spoke about that sparked this into a great strength, giving her work and her readers such a vivid and heart-moving experience that can come as close to what one would experience while reading a book with an ensemble cast.

There was a certain point during my read when I broke down into tears, the emotions the author draws out of us sharp and painful. It was at that moment when I noticed how quickly I had progressed into the book. The pace is extremely even and very swift throughout. My advice to you as a reader is to savour every moment; the book will drown you and before you know, it will be over and leave you wanting for more.

This book is a five on five for me. I highly recommend it and wish you a very happy reading! A Cage of Crimson releases on the 27th of this month! Check trigger warnings as always; the author has them listed on her website.

I didn’t think I could fall in love with this fairytale retelling series more but HOLY HADRIEL can I! I’m so obsessed with this world that K F Breene has created and all the characters in it. You feel like you are there with them, feeling their stress, laughing at their jokes. All of it is so perfectly crafted.

This is a red riding hood retelling with so many juicy twists and turns and passion.

When a sort of drug cartel gets raided and their drug maker is captured, believed to be the cause of many deaths around the kingdoms, her captor was not prepared to discovered she is his fated mate. The journey ahead get rocky as the Alpha has to deliver his mate to the dragon kingdom for her reckoning while trying to unpack the mysteries of who this woman really is and the trials she herself has overcome in order to survive.

I liked the premise but I absolutely loathed the FMC. She makes drugs for her abusive mother figure, she is perfectly okay taking beatings and allowing other kids to be tortured because “it’s a better life”. She creates drugs that can be “habit forming” aka addicting. She refuses to believe that after all the evidence “she’s not that bad”. Also it’s the people who take the drugs fault for getting hooked, they’re not innocent! And even when the “product” given out to people is more addictive she’s still not okay for it. With the plot twist at the end she still wants to go back to her old life even when she knows the horrible stuff her people have done. Even after knowing the addicting qualities of the drugs actually being sold she still wants to go back to her abusers and the people who treat her like shit
I’m all for characters that don’t take shit but the fact she only has self respect when it comes to Weston, not to anyone else. You cannot tell me she is a good character or one who should be sympathetic towards when she refuses to take accountability or accept reality
I am a big fan of the original 4 books in the series with Finley, I’m very disappointed about this series tho. Finley had great qualities and genuinely wanted to help people, she never overlooked the imprisonment of other people in her village, and consistently had the same personality, unlike the FMC.
I might read the next book bc it would probably involve more of her taking accountability or at least facing what happened, but the only redeemable thing about this book was the MMC.

3.75.

I dropped a star for that stupid ending. It was so clearly just a plot device to give some artificial angst for the next book. I hate it when authors so obviously manufacture relationship drama in such a heavy handed way. And while I appreciate Aurelia has had years of mental conditioning to overcome, the author sort of scrapped any character growth, too.

Apart from the shitty ending this was pretty good. No where near as good as the original series, which was a solid 5 stars all the way through, but pretty good nonetheless.

Even though there's a fair bit of smut in this, you actually have good writing and characters that come with it. Although I do despise the use of the word mewled in sex scenes,and that was somewhat over-used. I also felt that Hadriel's character was a bit too forced in this book. I still loved him, but he seemed a bit more like a charactature.

I feel like I'm being overly down on this, when it was a good book. I guess the shitty ending compounded the little.niggles I had throughout. I would still recommend it though!

I love K. F. Breene's style of writing, and have enjoyed most of the series I have read by her. This one starts off a little slow. I get it, we have to set the scene and build the world. It just felt different from other books I have read by her for some reason. It had the strong FMC who was also extremely naive. We will see how this continues to play out. The MMC is also very guarded for his own reasons. I think I found it frustrating that their relationship was a bit repetitive until towards the end. I wasn't very attached to the characters. Hadriel was hilarious....of course! I'd say spice is a 3/5. I liked this book, just something felt different than previous ones for me. We shall see how the next one in the series unfolds.

A Cage of Crimson (Deliciously Dark Fairytales, #5) is a deliciously dark tale, an epic tale that is full of intrigue and action and everything in between.

KF has cracked open the door and forged a path, along with some awesome authors and some great work with paranormal women's fiction, with her amazing imagination. KF takes standard paranormal/fantasy tropes and cleverly woven and twists them right up, tears down the norm, and takes them down a completely different route.

There are people who are brilliantly talented, and one of those is bestselling author KF Breene and the amazing tales she tells. I stumbled across her first book, Into the Darkness of the Darkness series in 2014 and was blown away. I have devoured everything she has written, even her work under Willow Summers. I have been enthralled with her writing, her world-building, her characters, and her humour ever since. I have laughed and cried, had heart palpitations, and I fell in love on each and every journey.

**There were 8 spicy scenes & 470 pages in this book. While there weren’t a ton in relation to the size of the book, the scenes that existed were EXCELLENT! 👌

A Cage of Crimson starts as a Little Red Riding Hood retelling. The FMC, Aurelia, has had her magic/wolf suppressed her entire life and everyone thinks she is non-magical. Due to this, she’s treated like she carries the plague. At a very young age, her mother was killed & on the run, and a woman named “Granny” took her in. Unfortunately, Granny essentially groomed and brainwashed Aurelia for YEARS. She made Aurelia completely dependent on her as she was the only one who treated her with “kindness.” The catch is that Granny has an empire selling drugs.. and who is her drug producer? Aurelia 😫

Aurelia thinks her “product” is safe. She tests every single batch & has even made a fail safe to each drug in case someone has a bad journey. What she doesn’t know is that Granny has been making alterations to her product and the alterations are making people sick, lose their appetites, and even killing them. Weston and his pack have come to her village to take her back to the dragon king & queen to face judgment. She’s adamant that her product is not bad because she has no idea what Granny is doing.

To throw a wrench in Weston’s plans, Aurelia is his TRUE MATE! He learns this immediately and is so upset because he cannot believe his mate would be the awful person he has perceived her to be. Aurelia has no idea since her wolf is suppressed but she does have this inexplicable draw to him.

The mating leads to some hot as hell knotting scenes 🥵🪢 and makes Weston one very possessive alpha.

K.F. Breene really knows how to give you both great plot and spice. I was on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what would happen next and let me tell you, that cliffhanger ending had me like 🤯🤯 I cannot wait for the next book to come out (I will be going crazy waiting for it since this one isn’t even officially out yet 😫)

I can’t discuss this book without mentioning my continued love for Hadriel! This character will have you laughing out loud. The shit he says is so left field; I’d want to be his best freaking friend! I pray one day he gets his own book 🙏

Thank you K.F. Breene for the arc! I am eternally grateful and will definitely be ordering a trophy copy for my shelf! 🥰🐺

“Making very delightful, if somewhat questionable choices.”

Friends, allow me to introduce you to Weston, an alpha wolf shifter that you need to have amongst your book boyfriends. He’s loyal, fierce, and needs to learn that sometimes rules are meant to be broken.

I need to tell you that I DEVOURED A Cage of Crimson by @kfbreene , and there were some lines so over-the-top that my normally straight face while reading in public completely broke down (ILY, Hadriel). With this story, you get action, plenty of spice, and a plot with a bit of mystery.

It’s the 5th book in the Deliciously Dark Fairytales series, and is the first of a duet, with the next book releasing September 19. You don’t need to have read the Ruin of Roses series to understand what’s going on, but there are some delightful easter eggs and of course, our favorite mediocre butler, Hadriel - did I mention that I love him?

K.F. Breene delivers on a delightfully dark and spicy retelling of red riding hood. If you’re in a reading slump, don’t worry - my favorite side character from this book will lift you right out and throw you into some unhinged craziness.

I was in the mood for a spicy read, returning to a world I loved, and this delivered.
Weston is the alpha we all know and crave, but his duty places him in a predicament.
The FMC... I loved her, and Hardiel is back!!!- but that ending, gah! I was screaming at her (in a good way, because when you react to the character's decision, you know the author did their job).

Please let it be a happily ever after.

Listening now - so drafting my review of first thoughts as I listen. Smirkin like a crazy Fecker!!!

Audio Book Review narrated with really tremendous voice acting by Tille Hooper and Tyler Doone

I'm rewarded with fantastic timing and pacing - I switched to the Audio book as I often do when I fall in love with the well crafted writing language expressed and I want to further experience all characters that were intriguing and arousing my attention to take it to the next level.

The book voice is demanding and direct and the audio book rises to the challenge. It has certainly proved its value as I have enjoyed hearing all the comic timing being met and the voice actors landing those sardonic smirky moments.Versatility and Consistency - there was no drop in characterisation or wrong voice placed.

Look I highlighted so many lines I loved - I just need to hear it voiced in my head by Tillie Hooper & Tyler Doone.
🐺Chapter 27 really showcases Tyler Doone voice acting range and experience his skills deploying various characters individuals voices with individuality and something special I just cant frankly name.

Aurelia - luv a character that has a strong sense of her s£xusl strength - her inner underdog really pulled me in - I like she wanted to wipe that look of FIGJAM off Westons face.
Weston - pulled me in as he and his pack gave me all the vibes of the princess bride on steroids, hes soo stealthy, possessive Mr Rochesterlike.
as a reader I really feel the credibility is drawn to reading by the awareness these these two are aware of
eachs faults and strengths. ....Sheesh everytime Weston says "Aurelia"...its hot!!

Now narrator Tillie Hooper is good girl dirty talker, and describes so well all that steam occuring that was inked to please, this book has all the knotting spice however really she also excels in lighthearted moments like the s£xual tickling in 🐺Chapter 29. oh and the bath scene in Chapter 34.. Tilly does deliciously dark spiciness soooo good - she gets an award for " knows" how to say "big 🐓" with sulty impact.

Hadriel- spoken moments provide that cross-examination through embarrassing everyone but without humiliating them - hes a "catch" in this series

Ive highlighted so many lines and yes 🐺Chapter 2 was Spicy "Yada" "Yada" and everyone will spicyboast there as look its hotAF, but for me I loved
Aureila courageous omission I’m tired of all this. I’m broken.” A tear slipped down her cheek. “I want to take a break from surviving, if only for a minute.”
I really connected to this honesty this tiredness of always bein "on" to survive and fight at everystep - resonated strongly.

I loving the adventure and action aspect of this book - I actually weirdly wish the cliff was bigger and deeper to fall off as reader - more impactive & soul destroying - I wanted a kick to the guts of my heart at the end of book. But these fated mates reads you all know the shifter within always wins everytime - that is what will rule and reign here and its only a matter of time.

Owner of both the E Book and Audio - I will definetly relisten. has my fav trope "Topping from the bottom."

BOBAA had me in one of the worst book hangovers I have ever experienced. I went through 7 books and couldn’t get into them… until A Cage of Crimson!

Normally I stay away from fairytale based storylines, but this broody wolf-shifter alpha male… hook, line, sinker.

What to expect with this book:
* Brave, defiant, sunshine(ish) FMC
* Possessive, brutish, dominant MMC
* Hilarious secondary characters that had me cackling all night long
* Captor / Captive
* Fated Mates
* Wolf shifters
* Buildable plot with many twists
* Characters with tragic pasts
* “Who did this to you”
* “You’re mine”
* Deception
* Cliffhanger ending 🤯

🐺 Weston (our alpha male MMC) was tasked with one job, capture the drug maker responsible for addicting & killing thousands of people across the kingdoms. Well he found her, but he never expected to find his true mate as the alchemist herself. Aurelia (our defiant FMC) has been an outcast her entire life. Living as a reject within her village because she’s believed to have no magic, her only sense of family is “Granny”- her employer. But even that woman has a sick sense of praise/ brutality in order to get Aurelia to create the addicting drugs for business. When Aurelia is captured by the wolf pack, she has no idea her product is killing. She firmly believes her products are created for good not harm. But with her handprints all over the crime, the alpha and his pack drag her back to stand before trail to be convicted for profiting off murder… but that mating bond can’t keep them apart. No matter how much they despise each other.

Oh my friends. This book was 🥵 Whenever I read a wolf shifter/ mate story- they’re always SUPER spicy! This one was drool worthy, but besides that -you could remove the spice & still have an addicting dimensional storyline! To me, that’s a 5 ⭐️!

Aurelia is a 27 year old woman who’s been beaten, neglected and groomed by Granny in order to become her prized alchemist. Aurelia’s past is haunting and I shed many tears for her younger self who was trying to find her place in the world. Despite her hardships, she tries to protect the innocent no matter the costs. She knows she’s blameless in the crime she’s convicted of and is determined as hell to prove it before the pack makes it back to the royal court.

Weston is everything I need in an alpha. Possessive af, primal, protective- even if he is an ass & believes Aurelia deserves her sentencing. But as he battles his duty against his heart… it will make you melt!

I devoured this book in less than 28 hours. I laughed, I cried, I sweat, and about threw my iPad in response to the ending! It’s an amazing read, but please beware of the traumas these characters are hiding!

A Crimson Cage by KF BREENE
Deliciously Dark Fairytales book 5

This book is ABSOLUTE PERFECTION. I took a break after reading book 4 of Deliciously Dark Fairytales, not sure I was ready to move on from Finley’s story. What was I thinking? This story is amazing. It is NOT a slow burn. I’m telling you spice happens within the first 10% of the book and it does not disappoint. After getting to know Weston in the previous books, it is utter perfection. The story is so engaging and packed full of trauma and found family. There are times you will be so mad you want to scream, but you will understand the reasonings and plot and will forget you need to live a life outside of this story. Hadrial returns in all his glory, and the balance between these characters will have you reading for hours. I DEVOURED this book in 24 hours. Reading until 2AM. I COULD NOT LOOK AWAY.

What are you waiting for?

In this book you will experience:
Drugs and addiction
Mental and physical abuse
Lots of spice 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
Fated mates
Wolf shifters
Trauma
Betrayal and lies and secrets
Found family - we get some amazing new characters in this book that add a ton of depth to this story
Dark humor
Ends on a cliffhanger (that hurt my heart)

A cage of Crimson

I have never read 1 single KF Breene book I didn't absolutely love, but this book is absolutely the most boring KF Breene book I've ever read.
The charectors were dull and exasperating. They made awful decisions. The female lead in particular was oblivious. After everything she experienced on the journey to the port, she was supposedly eager to return to a woman who forced her to make drugs. Who lied to her repeatedly who ordered her enforcer to punish her brutally for small mistakes. If that's not poor decision making I don't know what is. I just hope that this sort of writing isn't what we will be getting in the spinoff of Demigods of San Francisco. That's my favorite series of hers. I hope it isn't this dull.

The thing I missed the most is the humor I've come to expect from Breene. Demon Days, Demigods, Deliciously Dark Fairytales, Leveling Up all wonderfully imaginative and full of side splitting laughter. But that is not what I found in the pages of this book.

I really wanted to like this because I LOVED the first four books. The spice is this book was so good too and I was enjoying the plot. However, I hate the FMC. She’s naive and dense to the point of annoyance. I would’ve expected someone a little more badass as a mate for Weston and maybe she will be that in the next book. However, I most likely won’t be reading it. This book has left a meh taste in my mouth.

This was so filthy, I loved it. 😂 Had it not dragged a bit at different points it probably would’ve been an easy 5⭐️ - but the pacing would go from great to a slow crawl, and then it would really struggle to get back up to speed.

Little red riding hood is essentially a more wholesome Walter White (she doesn’t think her drugs are hurting people). She creates the drugs, “Granny” distributes. Interesting premise - lots of moral dilemmas and fun betrayals.
