The gentle waft of sewers emanating from Uncle Albert is not the only thing troubling Lady Caroline. From lost rivers and secret tunnels to Elizabethan lore, what unsavory matter has Uncle Albert walked into? Join Lady Caroline and Uncle Albert on a Voyage of Discovery through the secrets of London.
London, 1926
The members of the Royal Society for Natural History Appreciation have always felt they were built for greater things. Now, as they take a wrong turn, they stumble upon a secret of mythical proportions. To discover the truth, they need to go on a modern-day Voyage of Discovery and descend into London’s underworld of lost rivers, Tube tunnels, and secret passageways.
But as a thick fog settles over London, and as the Royal Society digs deeper into London’s secrets, what they uncover could have disastrous consequences for Lady Caroline’s family, and even the Government.
Dead bodies, missing treasures and diplomatic scandals. Who knew that the world underneath London’s streets could be so thrilling?
A Matter of Dead Ends is Book 7 of the Lady Caroline Murder Mysteries series. In the glamorous world of 1920s Europe, money and privilege rub shoulders, and greed, envy, and murder are never far behind. Follow Lady Caroline, intelligent and witty, with a fondness for breaking rules, on a fun romp through the golden age of murder mysteries. Each book contains the requisite eccentric characters, fun historical tidbits, and puzzling murders with no gore or gloom.
This was another fun entry in the Lady Caroline mystery series. This time, instead of being set in an exotic location, Caroline and Uncle Albert (and the rest of the Royal Society) are in London. Albert and his chronies are in search of mermaids in the sewers and tunnels under London, and have developed a whole conspiracy theory explaining their secrets.
Shortly, however, Caroline is asked to solve a mystery, when her brother Edward becomes involved in a murder. James, Caroline's fiance makes several appearances, as does Poppy.
I look forward to seeing where the next book takes us.
Another very silly mystery with Lady Caroline sleuthing in her mink! The Royal Society duffers are wandering the sewers of London in search of a mermaid, Caroline’s brother is accused of murder, and her mother of worse. Most of the detecting is really Caroline reviewing the kaleidoscope of clues while walking around the city. Doesn’t sound exciting but I would be surprised if you don’t chuckle at all the lunacy in Caroline’s world. I do hope Poppy gets out from under her mother-in-law’s thumb in the next book and I’d like to see more of James. If you’ve read the rest of this series, you’ll enjoy this one. If you haven’t, start from the beginning. They are all great fun.
In this seventh outing, Lady Caroline seeks answers on several fronts. Why would Uncle Albert and his dotty friends search for mermaids in the London sewers? Who killed the blackmailer who is trying to blacken her mother' s reputation and frame her brother for murder?
Isabella Bassett weaves these threads into life in high society where Edwardian matrons try to control the lives of their Bright Young Children. The mysteries are challenging and the social conventions are amusing. It's another engaging mystery set in Europe after the Great War.
While Uncle Albert and his cronies are looking for a mermaid (don't ask) in underground tunnels they discover a murder man. This along with potential scandal involving Caroline's brother is the premise of this book. This very well written story features enjoyable characters and a imagitive plot line. Very enjoyable.
This is a fascinating story. Yes, someone is murdered. But it became secondary to me. I've heard of tunnels leading to Buckingham Palace, but not to St. James. It was fun imagining the tunnels and where they would lead. Hope there are more stories to come about the tunnels.
Caroline’s family, brother Edward, Mother Evelyn, Aunt Ida and Cousin Sebastian played large roles in this story. I enjoyed learning about more of her family. I did miss James, Uncle Albert and Wilford. Their roles were small.
It seems more & more puzzles that have to do with letters? Wine? Tunnels? & then murder. Suspicion falls on Edward as well as some of his friends. But Caroline is sure to investigate with her beau James, & Come to the truths of it all.
