Jin Lan Cera is a new immigrant from Chongqing, China. The first edition of her book, Powered By Wellesley, published in 2017, offered her insights into China and the US as an atheist liberal believer. In 2019, she had an epiphany that God indeed exists. So, she rewrote the book to share her new understanding of the world and the grand impacts of Reaganomics.
Jin Lan realized that although censorship still exists in China, it switched from blocking capitalist influence from the West to filtering the promotions of big government policies since the 80s. During the same time, China's focus switched from government responsibility to individual responsibility, from fighting what's wrong to doing what's right. No more divisive binary thinking, only integration, because, in the ultimate truth, only one true life exists - our shared True Self. That's why China thrived magnificently.
Jin Lan's new book, Awakening...tells how the Law of Attraction led her out from the darkness to her dream life, spiritual awakening, and Buddha dharmas. Since she is a science lover, many credible sources about life science discoveries are cited in this book. Jin Lan plans to write a series of books sharing her amazing experiences with practicing the profound Buddha dharmas. She hopes to engage with like-minded wisdom seekers to share discoveries and insights of Buddhism on her social media platforms and even meditate together. Thus, everyone benefits from the spiritual synchronicities.
Jin Lan received her B.A. degree in economics from Wellesley College and A.A. degree in general studies from Western Nevada College, summa cum laude. Before immigrating to the United States, she was a successful entrepreneur in China. She resides in Mill Valley, CA and Brooklyn, NY, with her husband, Kenneth Cera, a lawyer in the venture capital business.
This is a strange book. It teaches about spiritual awakening . but author tells about her journey with some believable science background. Author is immigrant of China. So her background is budhdhist. It tells about budhdha and his dharma. The awakening feels real. It derived from some ancient texts which is from Hindu dharma.
Note: I received a free copy of this e-book through Booktasters in return for an honest review.
While the preface of the book talked about the Author’s painful journey, which led her to the spiritual awakening, the book was completely different than what you would expect from a Spiritual book. Oftentimes, humans resort to spirituality either by practice or being pushed to extremes, and we find solace. The author of this book was under extreme circumstances when she had the spiritual “Awakening.” This book is partly an autobiography of her journey to spirituality and mostly convinces us about the extraordinary humans she came across. Let’s delve deeper into the book, shall we?
***Author:** Jin Lan Cera **Language:** English **No. of Pages:** 188 **Format:** eBook **Genre:** Spiritual/Religion*
One fine day, the Author who was based out of US gets a call from her brother in China about their Mother who suffered an injury, this was during the COVID and the Author after so much of struggles got her passport to China to visit her aged parents. Unfortunately, her father was hospitalized for a small issue, but due to medical negligence, she lost her father. During the painful times of her father’s hospital days and after the passing away of her father, she explores spirituality from being an Athiest.
The painful story of her father’s experience was heart-wrenching, and her finding solace in god or religion was understandable. I wish the Author continued her autobiographical journey of spiritual awakening. Instead, the Author was convincing readers to believe in Qi Gong, finger reading, and spiritual guides to help humans find aliens.
Usually, such ideas would be presented in a much more interesting way and would want us to believe in all those things the authors say, but in spite of attaching so many links as proofs, they never came across as authentic because instead of organically presenting these ideas, the Author was convincing us to believe these theories which felt forced and most of the links were either blog posts or some other sources which weren’t working.
The narration was all over the place; it was propagandist in many parts, and it was pseudo-science in the rest of the parts, especially about healing the broken Chicken legs within minutes was an extraordinary claim, but we need more than videos as proof, we need more evidence, we need extraordinary proofs for these claims to be believable.
If you're someone who is fascinated by these ideas, this book is for you. Some fascinating things are mentioned, and you might like to dig deeper into these ideas. Otherwise, it was an excruciatingly painful read for me.

Despite its many strengths, the memoir does have some areas that could be improved. The Awakening by Jin Lan Cera is a very different but interesting book. It talks about spiritual guidance while also giving scientific knowledge. This book talks about adversity and self growth while also reporting the personal experience of the Author thoughout this Journey. It’s presented in a very helpful, personal and inspirational way that makes it very appealing for the reader.
In *Awakening*, author Jin Lan Cera chronicles a deeply personal journey of spiritual exploration and self-discovery, sparked by her father’s hospitalization and eventual passing. The narrative reveals how these challenging circumstances led the protagonist to discover the healing powers of Qi Gong practices. Through her encounters with individuals possessing extraordinary abilities to influence physical matter using Qi Gong, the protagonist begins questioning conventional beliefs, particularly the limitations of traditional education. The story unfolds as a transformative quest for understanding and enlightenment, interweaving reflections on spirituality, science, and the profound interconnectedness of the Universe.
Central to the narrative is the protagonist’s exploration of Qi Gong, which emerges as a key force in reshaping her approach to healing and consciousness. The book emphasizes how practices rooted in ancient wisdom have the potential to influence both physical and biological matter, offering a path toward manifesting dreams and embracing higher frequencies. Through interactions with family members and encounters with spiritually gifted individuals, the protagonist highlights the tension between conventional beliefs and the expansive possibilities unlocked by embracing non-traditional spiritual practices.
Cera masterfully blends themes of science, spirituality, and consciousness throughout *Awakening*, challenging readers to consider the interconnectedness of ancient wisdom and modern scientific discoveries. As the protagonist navigates personal struggles, including the adversity brought by the COVID-19 pandemic and medical challenges within her family, she begins to recognize the importance of raising one’s spiritual frequency and cultivating gratitude and compassion. The narrative is rich with insights into self-realization and the pursuit of enlightenment, ultimately leading to a deeper connection with the Universe.
In its culmination, *Awakening* presents a holistic vision of healing, merging faith, science, and personal growth. The protagonist’s encounters with exceptional Qi Gong practitioners who can heal broken bones, sprout seeds, and manipulate objects through focused intention reveal the limitless potential of consciousness. Cera’s reflective storytelling provides readers with a tapestry of spiritual growth, resilience, and the pursuit of truth, making *Awakening* a profound guide for those seeking deeper meaning in the interconnected fabric of life.
The “Awakening” by Jin Lan Cera is not only a wonderful memoir, but an educational read and self-help book, making it a very interesting read.
In the first part of the book the author tells her father’s story, from his hospitalisation, his treatments and his unfortunate death. Cera shares her experience with the denial of his illness, her care towards him and the disaster of the health care system, which anticipated his passing. Having undergone through this distressing ordeal, questions between spirituality and science collide, transcending Cera on a journey in search of deeper understanding into enlightenment.
The sequence of events and spiritual transformation by the author, takes the reader into Qi Gong practices, Christian teachings and Buddhism. This book is about embracing an open mind and surrounding yourself with positivity to help you grow. It highlights the importance of the law of attraction which will aid in you vibrating into a higher frequency.
This book is full of insight, love and is an inspiration to achieve personal growth. The book is not only full of anecdotes, but is brimming with web and video links, to establish evidence and help guide you grasp a wider understanding.
These are a few of my favourite passages from the book:
“Philosophy teaches people how to think. The Buddha’s teachings not only cover how to think, but also how to not think. The latter could be more important than the former because when you keep thinking, you can’t observe profoundly and comprehensively. When you are thinking, you are judging and living on your limited ego. When you are observing, you are living on the non-judging Mind of the infinite Universe.”
“Big dreams are comprised of smaller ones. By concentrating on what we already possess, we can rearrange our resources to manifest larger and larger dreams.”
“Make dreams that are from our heart so we can manifest them effortlessly.”
“Without gratitude, the Universe may cease deliveries, as it doesn’t know what makes us happy. The Universe wants us to be happy. Thus, let us remain ever grateful!”
I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys learning about different cultures and methods of elevating your life. Whole heartedly believe it would make a wonderful gift, with the mission to inspire and awaken.
The book presents the story of a young woman going on a spiritual journey. It starts off with a few motivational paragraphs, almost promising a universal solution, then the author introduces herself and a traumatic experience that she had gone through, leading her to seek healing in various faiths. The books continues with some anecdotal paranormal activity, lots of information about buddhism and finishes with a chapter of advice along the lines of "think positively" and "success is when opportunity meets preparation".
I personally wished the story was better packaged as an autobiography, since the author does come off as an interesting, cultured and well-meaning person. The structure and tone though were all over the place and the "evidence" left much to be desired. Some propaganda elements were used (intentionally or not), but overall I feel that the book was written for buddhists or those considering converting to it and just looking for that extra push. I was expecting more about the young lady going through various beliefs, but few besides buddhism are mentioned and even then, briefly and unfairly. For example, there are mentions of buddhism being potentially dangerous if used improperly, whereas christianity was quickly chucked for not providing overnight results. Another example: there are many chapters that go very deeply into buddhism, with some paragraphs where every other word is completely new to me. Around the end, the book calls itself self-help, which I disagree with, plus it reveals an organisation helped the author publish this book and further recruitement is advertised at the end. It feels like the whole purpose of the book is to obtain more recruits and to advertise other books that are repeatedly mentioned all throughtout. Another small thing that I feel didn't suit the theme was mentioning that she had to sell her beach house.
I mostly liked the autobiographical part, although I would have liked it to be the bulk of the book, rather than trying to be many things at once.
I recommend it for those practicing buddhism or interested in pursuing it. Everyone else can read it as well, but with a big grain of salt and a critical eye.
I have received this book through the kindness of the author via Booktasters, in exchange for my honest opinion on it.
There is more to the Universe than the Eyes can see...
The author has narrated her journey from painful loss to discovering the Law of the Universe to enrich life in ways she had never imagined. The Pandemic hit the World like no other just a few years ago, robbed our loved ones indiscriminately, leaving almost everyone emotionally drained, disillusioned and devasted. The same happened to the author when her father was cruelly taken from her during the pandemic.
In this fascinating book one can follow her journey from pain, heartache after losing her father, then entering into a journey of discovery for answers. There are unknown forces the Universe offers to all; if one can realise that there are miracles waiting to happen life would be transformed. The discoveries she makes are wonderful, it's a great help to all readers to be walked alongside on this road to the glorious life anyone can create for oneself. Please take it.
At an early stage in her search for answers, she finds these very young children reading without looking at the text, called Finger Reading. When she witnessed for herself some incredible talents displayed by kids , getting answers to unknown questions by examiners. Not by any conventional methods but by calling upon invisible Masters in the universe! The children were able to even sketch out the beings they encountered. Further on there comes into her life this quite wisdom, peace and the natural joy of Life. The attraction to Buddhism seized her as a spiritual path for life, has embraced that since then.
Nothing is impossible, all the answers are there ...just make the effort to seek. Respect life, all beings and the ever conscious Universe. This book is a manual to open the mind to the infinite knowledge of the Universe, never give up, ask for that divine assistance anytime. There are plenty of links for further reading, options to join the authors meditation circle and more.
Jin Lan Cera's "Awakening" is a deeply moving memoir that chronicles her family's medical crisis when her 91-year-old father is hospitalized with pneumonia in China. What begins as a straightforward medical situation evolves into a complex exploration of healthcare, family dynamics, and cultural perspectives on medicine and healing. Cera writes with raw honesty about her journey from blindly trusting medical authority to becoming a fierce advocate for her father's dignity and wishes. The tension between Western medical intervention and traditional Chinese healing philosophies adds a compelling cultural dimension to this universal story of family care giving.
The book's greatest strength lies in her unflinching examination of her own assumptions and mistakes while navigating an impossible situation. Her growing suspicion that her father's fears about his treatment might be legitimate creates genuine tension and raises important questions about patient autonomy and how we listen to elderly patients. This thought-provoking memoir offers valuable insights for anyone facing similar family medical crises while providing a unique cross-cultural perspective on healthcare and end-of-life care. A powerful reminder of the importance of trusting our instincts and advocating for our loved ones.
Awakening is a thought provoking book that gives a lot of information, and a lot to think about. As someone of Christian background and faith, I have always had an open mind to the Buddah's teaching because mostly it deals with kindness to self and others. However, when reading about the Universe as an entity, I simply substituted "God" in its place. I think what I am trying to say is, do not take this book as a suggestion to change your faith or beliefs, but instead, use it as way to feel and have deeper meaning with your own life and thoughts. Reads a bit like a research paper in some parts, which was interesting, nonetheless. I learned about the teachings of Dr. Yan Xin, and the "symbiotic relationship between scientific inquiry and spirituality", which I found very interesting. There is mention of the "third eye" and the practice of Qi Gong, which was also interesting. Personally, I am intrigued by the power of the mind and our unknown capabilities, but my belief is strong in knowing that God holds the key to everything in my life All this being said, I do recommend this book if you have an open mind and a willingness to learn new things.
The book follows the journey of the author as they fine their spiritual awakening. the story describes her struggle with her father's condition and her finding peace in a particular belief. what follows is different instances what she describes as that further cements her belief. there are snippets from interviews of various such stars or celebrities. While I have absolutely nothing against the author's mindset, but personally I don't agree with the beliefs mentioned in the book and feel that it's been tried too hard to make them feel real with sprouts of tradition and science. If the book works for you to help achieve a certain level of spirituality good for you, sadly it didn't interest me.
I enjoyed my time reading ‘Awakening’. It reads as both of a memoir and a type of self-help book which is pretty unique & interesting. The book begins as more of a ‘memoir’ type of read, where the author details her experience of her father in critical hospital care & shortly after, his death. The author discusses how she used finding a deeper level of spiritual belief as a comfort during this time.
After, the book begins to read as a ‘self-help’ book - how to go about achieving this higher level of spirituality. This is not something that I am looking to do, but I found it interesting & enjoyable to read about all the same. Something else to note is the author provides extensive footnotes to help explain any unfamiliar terms, teachings, etc.
A friend recommended Awakening to me after hearing Jin Lan Cera’s story, and I’m so grateful she did. This book is a deeply personal exploration of faith, identity, and the unexpected ways life can transform. I really appreciate how honestly Jin Lan writes about her shift from atheism to spiritual awareness and how she connects her own awakening with larger cultural and political changes in both China and the US. Her reflections on the Law of Attraction and Buddha dharmas feel sincere and grounded, especially because she brings in scientific references to support her insights. This is a thoughtful, eye-opening read I would gladly recommend to anyone curious about spirituality and cross-cultural understanding.
I found this a really intriguing and eye-opening read. The author talks about the law of attraction, which I find an interesting concept. In terms of my own beliefs, I remain sitting on the fence, but I always enjoy hearing about the experiences of others. The author includes a lot of anecdotes which were lovely to read.
I've always believed that life has strange little ways of giving us what we want, and sometimes it can be just when we least expect it, or it may seem like a strange coincidence. That's why I find the law of attraction, manifesting etc, so interesting to think about.
No matter what your viewpoint, I think this would be an interesting read for anyone.

Jin Lan Cera’s Awakening… is both memoir and spiritual exploration, charting her path from atheism to a profound encounter with Buddhism and inner truth. What makes the book compelling is the way Cera weaves her personal survival story with discoveries from science and ancient wisdom, bridging two worlds often seen as opposites. Her reflections feel both intimate and expansive, inviting readers to question, to seek, and to open themselves to experiences that transcend intellect alone. It’s a book that resonates like a quiet meditation, part testimony, part guide, and wholly sincere.
What a fascinating read. First my heart breaks for what this author went through with her family that brought them to the place they are bow. This is an informative read about many practises I knew nothing about and I am going to research some of the sources listed to learn more as well as practise the steps myself. This is a book of learning and hope.
Feelings are like colors painting the canvas of our lives. They’re what make us human, connecting us to the moments we cherish and those we wish to forget and forgive.

This book is talking about the path of the author, on how she understood the insights of Buddha dharmas. Her way of describing everything, from the situation she went through, the information she found, the meditation practices; makes you get really involve with it. I really liked that. It gives a lot of information with facts and her sources. Something that I appreciate is that she is not forcing anything and respects every ideology. At the end, apart from shearing her story, she's also giving enough knowledge for you to achieve your goals.
