Eliza is left in the forest by her parents to die and is found and rescued by the demon lord of the forest, Abbadon. He’s initially baffled by this small creature but this feeling quickly turns into curiosity and devotion.

“As we meld into the shadows that birthed me, I am acutely aware of the fragility cradled within my monstrous embrace, the juxtaposition of her mortal warmth against my immortal chill.”

Eliza is tended and cared for by Abbadon and the two start to build a relationship of mutual respect and trust that goes deeper than friendship. Abbadon sees her as part of him and wants to keep her forever.

“That she is mine and I am hers, bound together by the unbreakable threads of destiny. My mate. My love. My everything.

When danger comes, it will be up to Abbadon to save them. Will Eliza accept her new life?

I’ve never read a book by Nina Siren but I will definitely be checking out her backlog. The way she writes is like poetry. There was so much relationship development and I loved the character development as well. Abbadon was big and bad but had a heart of gold for his Eliza. I loved the way he cared for her. Eliza was so real and I liked that she wasn’t afraid to voice her opinion or needs.

The steam in here, while more of a slow burn, was intimate and passionate and their exchanges so full of chemistry.

"Oh, I have no doubt you'd be delicious… a little snack," he purrs, brushing a clawed finger along the line of my jaw. "But eating you would be a tragic waste. There are so many more... pleasurable things I'd rather do with you."

Looking at the cover I honestly thought I was going into something quick and smutty but I got a story much deeper and meaningful than I was expecting and I was definitely a fan.

All of Nina's books have such beautiful covers!
I absolutely loved Hunted By the Lich from this author, I'm still hung up on that cliffy..

This was a cute lil fated mates story.
If you're reading this for smut, It only happens once at the end.

Kinda hoped her parents got sick, died, or shit their pants...idk. something. They got away with leaving their sick kid in the woods to die.
Hate them.

So many inconsistencies. And the over explaining of tiny details while ignoring interesting bits. She thinks of him as her mate once before he tells her they are mates.

He is bitten on the arm by a beast but immediately goes to fixing up her injuries and proceeding in sexy times but his injury is never mentioned again.

The start of the book makes it sound like she’s going to be a sacrifice for the woods since she’s so sickly. The parents and sisters are terrified of the woods and she’s been told about evil demons. But the demon acts as if a human in his forest never happens and is shocked one has been abandoned. So that doesn’t make sense.

Where did the creepy guy at the end come from? He just hangs out in terrifying, demon possessed woods looking for girls to prey on? Did he get lost in the woods, too?

How is she suddenly capable of going on a forest tour with him if she’s so sickly she’s always known her parents would get rid of her? She mentions his medicines but he’s only ever shown to give her food and blankets. It’s like the author tried to cover up that plothole with her mentioning meds toward the end. But even if he did have some, they would have been decades old. He’s not from this planet but is capable of making his alien potions with earth resources?

I know stories are made up but you have to have a reasonable explanation within the story for these things.

I'd give this maybe a 2.5 ⭐️ rating.
It's just okay. It's a quick fated mates read, and it starts strong but quickly gets almost endlessly repetitive. It's a novella, so it just feels incomplete at times, especially with Abbandon's backstory. I didn't love it, but it also wasn't awful. 🤷🏻‍♀️

TLDR; The author lost the plot, so why should we readers bother finding it?

This reads as if the author started writing it, took a 5year break and then came back to the story without rereading what she previously wrote. The switch is jarring cuz nothing makes sense afterwards. Shame really, cuz it had a promising start.

This should've been written in 3rd person. Right now we have 2 separate characters that view the world in the exact same way and describe everything the same. Flowery writing doesn't match first person perspective if you have multiple POVs. There are ways to do this properly of course but I don't think this author could've pulled it off, she can't even keep track of her own figures of speech half the time.

Also, how old are these characters? Why were his wings never mentioned until he displayed them for battle? How convenient that they're not there to get in the way during everyday life but are ready to take the stage for a display of strength before battle (yes, display only, he doesn't even fly). Who was the human who showed up and why was he made of shadows? I could go on and on with these inconsistencies, which is kinda embarrassing for such a short book

Eliza is cast out by her family left to the elements of the forest to perish, when she's discovered by Abbadon. A demon of the the forest he usually hunts for hearts and lives to destroy but when he comes across Eliza he wants to protect hers with all his being. Well written quick, demon/human, fated mates, violence, action and more

There were many missing parts to this.

Of course this is a beauty of and the beast type of story where Eliza was abandoned by her family and saved by Abbadon.

It’s readable, but I don’t recommend.

***Please note that this review is mainly for my benefit as it is more of a summary of the book and may contain spoilers.***

She is sick, possibly deathly. Her family decides to abandon her in the woods.
He finds her laying there, barely alive. He's immediately drawn to her, and he decides to take her to his house. He senses that she is his fated mate. At his house, he gives her medicine, feeds her, and cars for her. She is initially scared of him because of his appearance, but he is kind and takes care of her. Over time, they bond, and she heals after she started to become stronger. He takes her on a walk in the woods. There, a beast attacks them. He tells her to run away so he can defeat it. She gets lost in the woods. A man finds her and attacks her. Her demon rescues her, and he takes her back to his house. He confesses his love for her. She admits she loves him as well. They have very vanilla sex. They live happily ever after.

This is only a ninety page novella, short and sweet, nothing spicy at all, surprisingly, or a demon story.

This is less of a book and more of a novella or short story. It's also written very strangely with a lot of inconsistencies.
She spends a huge amount of time describing, quite ostentatiously I might add, the reactions of her parents. Their faces, words, tears, etc, and yet, they completely ignore her and act like she's sleeping or something.
She also goes from laying in a bed burning with fever to walking through a forest. No blackout descriptions or anything, it's simply like the author wanted her suddenly there.
Then she goes from walking, falls down in exhaustion, and is suddenly being put down by the person carrying her, without ever being described as even getting picked up or anything. It's super annoying.

The introduction of the demon is also done pretty poorly. He talks out loud to himself, describes his own facial expressions, etc etc.
Not my kind of writing at all.

What in the actual fuck did I just read. I don’t even know how this ended up on my TBR list. I blame booktok. A bunch of unreliable folks that say shit for views. This is not hot. It’s not steamy. It’s not smutty. There was one fucking scene in this novella. The entire story was chaotic AF and I have questions.

I couldn’t give it one start cause the single scene was decent and the story was cute. It was just inconsistent and super rushed. I… I’m mad I spent time on this lol. If you are a friend of mine and we have similar interests take this fucker OFF your TBR.. lol

If you think this is a spicy romance with dirty talk and tension, where they fall in love along the way I advise you to turn back now.

This is a romance short story with awful fight scenes, the damsel in distress trope, and repetitive one word descriptions. Oh, by the way they only have sex once at the very end after they've confessed their "feelings" that somehow magically formed.

And the sex wasn't even good, there wasn't dirty talk or anything spicy besides the generic formula every erotic writer uses that is supposed to be “explosive.”

If that sounds interesting then enjoy and please leave this rant of a review.

The writing is very tell instead of show, and we never get the thoughts of the main characters while they’re doing action. ANY action. Reading, walking, eating, bathing, nothing. They don’t think unless it involves their “love interest.”

I really like insta-love, and I know this is a short story. But that is not an excuse for this “couple” to know nothing about each other. WE don’t even know anything about who they are. They don’t have any qualities for these characters to suddenly be making puppy eyes after the first 2 minutes.

Can I also mention the inconsistances. There are others, but I want to talk about the height. The exact words were: “He’s easily twice my height,” (page 22). As much as I love a nice tall guy, 9 feet is a bit much.

Then, suddenly he’s 5’10 and her shoulders fit nicely under his???

Note: Goodreads has marked this book as Erotica. But all I see is a very trashy romance with 1 dimension characters and awful awful action scenes.

Can we also bring to light how the hero is so hurt he’s almost crawling. Then, a few moments later he finds the heroine with a few scrapes on her cheek, he picks her up like he wasn’t just nearly beat to death, brings her home, takes care of her, confesses his feelings and the heroine NEVER WORRIES ABOUT HIM?

She says she loves him but someone in love would WORRY.

Pardon me, but I prefer a main character with an IQ above 15 and with some sympathy. Hate all you want, but those are my preferences. ✋🏻

Listen- I’m not hating on them falling in love the second (this is not an exaggeration) they meet each other. I’m hating on the WRITING. THE INCONSISTENCIES. THE AWFUL “SPICE” SCENE. THERES ONLY ONE ANYWAY!

Pleeeeease. I just can not with the way this book is written. Like, how many ways can you say “Electricity”? Apparently this author doesn’t know any besides “Electricity”. And it’s annoying. Find something better than “Electricity”.

Like zap, or tingle, or awareness, or jolt, or longer description besides “Electricity”. We get it. They’re into each other and they’re mates. (Really liked the fated mates part by the way, that is the only redeeming quality)

But I can not with the assumption that after they confess their feelings they kiss and have sex. Like it was supposed to happen and there was no question about it.

🌶️: 1.5/5 (that is horribly bad for the way this book is marketed)

I’m so glad this is off my TBR.

Don't Judge this Book By Its Cover

They say don't judge a book by its cover, but any book lover know the cover gives you the best bits and can be a motivator. I was drawn to this book because of the menacing cover. I don't know if it's AI (based on the lack of credit. It's an unfortunate high probability), but I was intrigued by what was in the pages. I thought it would be a demon being badass and embracing his darkness. However, despite what the cover says, this is not hot or dark. Not quite at all. This one falls into Monsters/Demons behaving good and not bad.

Characters:
So often, with fantasy romances, I hope authors really consider the why. Why is the demon Black-skinned to the human's milky pale? The demon is, of course, described as monster/bad/evil category to the human's innocent. Even though these are old archetypes, with the racial implications, I just wish different choices are made. So here we have the MMC "skin is the blackest of black, as dark as oblivion, his eyes red like the embers of a dying fire" vs. The FMC "She is light and ethereal, almost as if spun from moonbeams and the sighs of sleeping flowers."

Writing:
That set an uneasy tone for my reading. The prose was purpley at times. With a hint of overwrought to the touch but skilled. The story is short, which makes sense for the plot.

Another pondering while reading: The FMC is described as small girl in the beginning (no ages are given, but by the actions and thoughts she could be anywhere from 16-19) but by the middle of the book she is described as a woman. As if the MMC placing romantic and sexual attraction has now made her womanly instead of girly. The shift was maddening from my perspective as a reader. Fantasy authors can't seem to break their obsession with young FMCs.

Tropes:
#Mine
#OneBed (not used)
#FatedMates
#Hurt/comfort
#NurseBacktoHealth

Once you start this you won’t put it down until the last page has been turned it can be read in under an hour or so but hang out it a doozy in the best way I read the insert and just kept reading. Eliza is so sweet thrown away by her family because she was sick taken into the deep deadly forest by her parents left to die, she has never felt love from her family, remembers hearing all the horror stories of what happens in the wood, and can understand why her parents would just leave her to die all alone crying out for help. Abbadon a demon of the forest the last of his kind after he witness the death of his follow mankind, not knowing what happened to his family on his planet living alone for so long never really knowing kindness on the planet they arrive to hoping to make it home so he has settled for living alone hunting the forest, and when he goes out for the evening a very enticing smell attracts his full undivided attention. When he finds her he knows she is his mate but he has to first make sure she lives knowing she is his to protect, to love, to keep safe, but can he convince her that he isn’t a monster, can she see past his monster looks, ways, things he has done, will she feel safe, loved for the first time with her monster, and can they find a little peace… a lot of happiness?

This was a quick and enjoyable book that brought two species together that need each other. Eliza is a human female that’s sick and so she doesn’t infect anybody else her parents take her out into the woods and she is left to die. Scared alone and sick she calls for help but nobody comes and soon passes out. And when she wakes she is in a bed and when a demon steps out she panics and screams but soon calms down and he offers her food. Abbadon is a Demon Lord who is the last of his kind and lives alone in the woods until he smelt an amazing smell and finds a human female out cold and he picks her up and takes her to his home where he has been nursing her back to health and when she wakes and is afraid of him and screams he’s not sure what to do so he gives her food and she calms down to eat and they start to talk about each others lives and he is shocked and not happy to hear that her parents left her in the woods to die and she is sad that he has been so lonely with nobody for a long time and now they longer they are together the stronger the bond gets and desires take over. There are so many obstacles that they face and have to work through to finally get there HEA.

'With care that borders on reverence, I slide one arm beneath her knees, the other supporting her back. She is light and ethereal, almost as if spun from moonbeams and the sighs of sleeping flowers.'

I really enjoyed this book. I loved both Eliza and Abbadon. Because she was sick, her parents abandoned her deep in the forest where her sickness could not pass to anyone else. Abbadon found her and brought her to his home to recover. I liked the way they grew closer and fell in love. He was sweeter than I imagined he would be. He was lonely and alone, and his history a sad one. I finished reading it entirely to fast. 4 stars.

P.S.- Because I'm petty, I would have liked another scene with her family- for them to see her alive and well and get some kind of punishment or rebuke for what they did to her.

ABSOLUTELY LOVE THAT COVER!!!
Interesting story, her family loves her but they still leave her in the forest to die (as they possibly don’t want to catch what she has??…) thankfully, fate had someone better for her❤️❤️❤️ a quick-ish read, I found it to be romantic & sweet, not much in the way naughty-fun-times, but I enjoyed the freshness of the story… surprised there’s things in the forest that scare the Demon!!
😈😈😈😈😈
My only leftover questions:
-so there’s a planet of Demons, therefore he’s more of an Alien not a Hell-Spawn-Demon?
-what was she sick with that had her family abandon her?
😈😈😈😈😈
I’m sorry-but I did have to laugh with the obsession with the word “obsidian” & the interest in the thesaurus 🤭😆😉 (loam, juxtaposition, obsidian, onyx, ebon, etc… not making fun-just amused)😉

This is pretty low effort at a romance novel. No editor looked at this, I'm certain.

1. The author should really ban herself from using "I can't help but", "obsidian", "ebon" and "ebony". The I can't help but. . . was driving me nuts in the first couple pages.
2. In one chapter the demon talks about sharing with her that she's his mate, but not yet. The very next chapter, she mentions that she's his mate to herself. Like, did she guess, or. . .?
3. Is his blood obsidian or cerulean? 2 very different colors there.
4. So, are they demons or are they aliens?
5. Is this AI? The same exact sentences occur, separated by only 2 lines. Apparently, bad guy has putrid breath that assaults her face like a knife. Which doesn't make sense but ok.

I get it's only like 75 pages, but this is. so. lazy.
SO bad. Just became a hate read for me.

me banging my head on the wall

This story has so much potential. However, it overlooks so many details I don’t know whether I like or dislike this to short story.
She’s sick, our hero heals her but how?
He picks all the ingredients to make bread and butter (??) There is mention of wings, but then what happened to them? There are more, but I’m going to leave spoilers out because the story has potential.

I almost feel like we are reading an outline that had a few sections flushed out but left out plot details to write in later.

If the story blurb sounds interesting, try the story. But fair warning, the story ends at 85% and I’m not sure if I’m glad I read this or not. I’m not sure I’ll read another story by this author.

Quick read

I liked the plot, the read was pretty quick; one spice scene.
Two things really bugged me, the dialogue was set as during one time period but the characters would occasionally say more modern things. And the other was that the author was very, sometimes overly descriptive, on repeat. The character would think something, extrapolate about it, then in a paragraph or two have the same thought but worded very slightly differently. Kind of distracting.
While the demon could have been more demon-like, I did enjoy the story overall and would read another from this author.

This is like classic Beauty and the Beast. A demon saves a girl in the forest from near death and takes care of her until she warms up to him and realizes he is not bad. This is a really sweet soft romance not even what I expected. If you like your hero dark sweet, large but also very growly and alpha this is it. And it's short and good. I think the only qualm I have is it was too short and the main characters' back stories were not deeply explained. Overall, good writing, sweet hero scary, and a bit of everything.

This was a quick fate-mates demon/monster romance. It's novella-length, so it'll go quick for you. Don't expect depth. Don't expect much to it, except for the basic trope of girl and monster meet, get over the "monster" thing, suspense, love, HEA. That being said, it's kind of what I was looking for when I was scouring Amazon for something to read. Like, I wanted this exact book, so I ended up happy overall when I was done. Sure, there were so much that could have been improved upon, but for the purposes of what this book fulfills, it was pretty darned good.

Demon Oh Lord!!

Once I started, I could stop reading. This was a great quick read.
Perfect to read over lunch or on a lazy Sunday morning.

Eliza is an unwilling damsel in distress and Abbadon is the willing protector.
The story and characters are well written, even though it's short.

This was a sweet but dark read (check the author's content warnings).
I would love to read an extended or continued story about Eliza and Abbadon in the future.

There was a lot of contradiction and repetition within the story.
Frankly, I couldn't understand whether the hero came from another planet, hell or the abyss. I found it confusing that in one episode, while talking about another planet, he constantly referred to himself as a demon and referred to coming from places like Hell or Abyss.
I also think that the author is too interested in heart rhythm and beats and uses more descriptions than necessary.

it tried. I think it lacked length to be successful

Cute concept, but with it being so short it left a mass of a rather unbelievable relationship. Also, demon seems like an unfitting name for him. Nothing of this fit the traditional “dark” type - he was soft overall really. If you go in looking for a cute almost fairytale vibe this is a great short, however if you enjoy dark and smutty this missed that mark.

So how did the FMC know they were mates when in the last chapter he was scared to tell her? Short story that I could have went with or without reading.

Additionally, if he has claws … how is this fingering happening or enjoyable. Sorry just had tons of plot holes for me.

Wouldn’t call this dark or hot. Just a monster/demon romance.

Interesting plot but it seems familiar to me from other books, only difference is the demon aspect.

Intrigued to start.

I was intrigued at the start of this book—the premise and characters drew me in right away. However, after the first quarter, the story started to lose focus, and it felt disjointed. The plot seemed to go in an odd direction that didn’t hold my interest, so I ended up skimming the rest. While there were a few entertaining moments, I didn’t feel invested enough to want to read any other related books, if there are any.

The first thing I noticed about this book...the language was beautiful. It was reminiscent of Jane Austen...but with monsters and sex. The descriptions were like poetic prose, the tension was built with lilting and yet sorrowful verbiage. All around, it was an intelligent book for what it was--monster romance.
